New Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#167)

Social media algorithms, AI-generated songs, astroturfed Tik-Tok stars, and all kinds of other hijinks make it harder to find authentic songs from real artists. But that’s all you’ll find on this painstakingly-curated playlist.
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
Newest Additions:
Jacob Tolliver – “If The Phone Ain’t Ringing It’s Me” – Great hook on this fun little country/rockabilly tune from one of modern music’s rare honky tonk piano players. Jacob Tolliver can make a lot of noise, but not enough noise is made about him.
Lukas Nelson, Sierra Ferrell, The Travelin’ McCourys – “Unknown Legend” – Three modern day well-known legends team up to turn this Neil Young tune into an excellent bluegrass track that we didn’t know we needed before, but are definitely happy we have now.
Blaine Bailey – “Hatchet” – Oklahoma-based Native American artist Blaine Bailey has just released a new album called Indian Country, and the name says it all. It’s COUNTRY, but from the Indian perspective, illustrated excellently in “Hatchet.”
Ella Langley – “Choosin’ Texas” – Co-written with Miranda Lambert, Ella Langley turns the Texas vs. Tennessee rivalry in country into a song of heartbreak, and one that finds a inviting sound indicative of the late ’70s, early ’80s.
Melissa Carper, Theo Lawrence – “Dat Ain’t Right” – Something must be afoot between these two Austin-based throwback country artists because this is the third song they’ve released in collaboration. Might an album be next? We hope so, because the results so far have been mighty fine.
Conrad Fisher, The Oak Ridge Boys – “Nobody Praying for Me” – Conrad Fisher first released a version of this song via YouTube in 2024, and it’s since racked up nearly 500,000 views. Now he teams up with the legendary Oak Ridge Boys to brings the song’s beautiful 4-part harmonies alive like never before.
Leon Majcen – Thinking ‘Bout Love – Singer/songwriter Leon Majcen has released himself a record inspired by life on the road as a touring musician called Making a Livin’ (Not a Killin’), and “Thinking ‘Bout Love” is one of the jewels of the set.
Cole Chaney – “Spirit” – The epic, 6-minute “Spirit” burrows itself so deep in your inner marrow, it’s like it becomes one with you. Numerous songs from Cole Chaney’s new grunge-infused country album In The Shadow of the Mountain accomplish this symbiotic relationship as well.
Jack Blocker – “Worth His Salt” – Jack Blocker is a country music investment to get on the ground floor with and ride the tide. Jack’s voice is attuned to accentuating the emotion of a lyric and following a melody, while the music is pleasantly understated and sumptuous, though present and full-bodied all the same.
Hayden Baker – “What Part of No” – Baker’s one of these multi-tool traditional country up-and-comers that you can’t get enough of once you’re initiated. He’s a great singer, songwriter, and guitar player, all of which are highlighted on “What Part of No” about our inherent lack of impulse control.

Conrad! Nice work buddy, epic. Blown away!!! Hell, Hayden, Ella, and Cole Chaney, these songs are all excellent, but it’s Jacob Tolliver’s song with a phrase I’ve used for decades that’s my favorite new playlist track. Brit Taylor’s All For Sale has been #1 for a couple of weeks, Jenna Paulette, with Jake Worthington’s song Chasin’ Whiskey, is there as well, and it’s Mae Estes’ EP that comes slammin’ into the morning rotation headline slot with a song I absolutely love, What She’s Havin. Goosebumps ……. A+ Mae !!!
Around town Sparkle Carcass dropped their sophomore effort, Maraschino Chevy, that’s creating quite a stir. I love it! Ben Jarrell played The Law Office Pub last week with Nick Sizemore in tow. He landed here in a Black Helicopter, if you can believe it, and treated us to songs from his upcoming album, Southern Story. The next day saw Pat Reedy headlining Wild Earp’s annual Honky Tonktoberfest with Meg and The Wheelers opening. We’re lucky to have Pat living here now, as he’ll be supporting Brennen Leigh tonight at Roberts Westside.

So I just googled for live clips of both of these guys and there was almost nothing recent from Nick Sizemore. What’s going on with him? I love love love the album that trigger reviewed here a few years ago. I would freaking love it if there was a collaboration between those two or a new album from Nick.

I’ve been listening to Ruston Kelly’s new album almost daily since I noticed it was released back in September. There’s some great slower songs like “Twisted Root” that go head to head with all of these songs. I know you can’t cover everybody, but I’m surprised about this one. It should fit somewhere in the country DDS

Congrats Conrad! Terrific song. Great to see an SCM diehard getting his due. I knew Ella had a great song in her somewhere. Drake Milligan released single number two called “Old Flames, Old Whiskey” and it just raised my hopes even higher about how good his next album will be. I’m generally not a “traditionalist” but Drake brings something that makes his stuff traditional and current all at once.
For all you reformed rockers on here like me, losing the Spaceman cuts really deep. Ace was a rocker to his core and by far the most personable and coolest member of that band. The first album I ever bought was their debut – the black one. I thought my mom was gonna lose her mind when I came walking in the house with that thing under my arm at the ripe old age of 13! Rock on Ace.
