New Hayes Carll Album “You Get It All” Calls Heavily on Country
Songwriter and native Texan Hayes Carll has always been one of those cats who’s sat right on the periphery of country music in that mutable, undefinable “Americana” space as someone similar to Townes Van Zant or Guy Clark who always put the songwriting first and worried about genre second. But Carll’s coming out and saying with his upcoming record called You Get It All to be released October 29th on Dualtone that his country roots rise to the surface.
“I like to tug at heartstrings, find commonality with others, reflect on my own life, and sometimes I do it in a lighthearted way,” says Carll. “A lot of musical styles found their way onto this record, but my first and most formative influences came from country music. This is a country singer-songwriter record. It’s just unapologetically me.”
Of course Carll hasn’t just crafted his own performing career, but has contributed as a songwriter to some big country music names, including Lee Ann Womack, Kenny Chesney, and most recently Brothers Osborne. When composing the new album, along with the influences of guys like Dylan and Tom Waits rattling around in his head, Carll also heard Randy Travis, Hank Williams Jr., and Kenny Rogers.
Co-writers on the album include folks like Sean McConnell, Josh Morningstar, and Brandy Clark who also appears on the track “In The Meantime,” but of course most of the music springs from the pen of Carll himself. You Get It All was produced by Hayes Carll’s wife and fellow songwriter Allison Moorer with Kenny Greenberg. Hayes calls Allison Moorer, “…a world-class artist who has a way of helping me articulate my vision.”
Allison Moorer also sounds to be the inspiration for the title track of the record, which has just been released. Part love letter, and part apology, it’s Carll’s submissive proclamation to Moorer (listen below).
“I hope this record helps people feel good, laugh a bit, and maybe give them something to lean on when they need it,” Hayes Carll says. “I hope they dance to it, too.”

I am so stoked about this album. Carll has been a favorite of mine for years now. Seen him live twice, and he’s coming back to one of my favorite venues in my hometown in November, so I’ll be excited to hear him play some of these new songs live.

He created the definitive version of that song, I’d say. Hayes’ strength is more in his writing and interpretation than his physical voice, but my gosh anyone sings better than Tom Waits. His first two albums back in the 70’s excepted.

Gentile and Oregon Outlaw,
When I was younger I only knew of the Ramones version of “I don’t want to grow up” and thought it was their original.
I first saw Hayes about 12 years ago at Shank Hall. What a great show. He is one funny dude. His between song banter was good stuff, sort of like Todd Snider in that way (not musically).

definitely hints from his voice that remind me of Billy Joe Shaver.

Obviously, you can tell by my namesake, I am excited for this. I stay away from his Patreon page because he has already released identical stripped down version of these songs. I think Hayes is way underrated. I also think he lost momentum when he released Lovers and Leavers which wasn’t a great album. All this other stuff is awesome.

“Lovers & Leavers” definitely took some time to grow on me. He definitely seemed to go outside of his comfort zone on it, which I respect. I ended up liking the album, but it is my least favorite of his albums.

Am I the only one who thinks he is the Stephen Malkmus of country? Not meant as an insult…I like Malkmus.

Both have kind of a “slacker” vibe, write sometimes goofy but witty lyrics, have a “laid back” singing style, don’t seem to take themselves too seriously (in a good way), are willing to feud (Corrgan/Earle), and are seemingly tall.

so much to love about this track beyond the stellar writing.
production is so unpretentious -timeless , so cleanly mixed but with conviction ( unlike a dave cobb -type stripped-down production which often seems to lack a presence/conviction ), uncluttered and decidedly un-trendy . i’m making that a word .

Looking forward to this. His last album What It Is was one of my favourites from 2019.Glad he’s putting out albums more consistently after the long gap from KMAG YOYO to Lovers and Leavers.
I also hope after the recent topic by Trigger that they don’t put out any more songs before release but with 3 months to go I expect they will

If the rest of the album is anything like ‘You Get It All’ which is released today we’re in for an absolute treat!
