New Version of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies” Is Finally Here
Ever since the Netflix series The Ranch debuted on April 1st, 2016, folks have wanted to get their hands on a copy of the new version of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” which finds Shooter Jennings and Lukas Nelson getting together to recreate the magic of their famous fathers. Originally written and performed by Ed Bruce with his wife Patsy, and performed by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, all fans got was a snippet of the new studio version in the introduction for the show, until now.
The Ranch series is coming to a close after the eighth part gets released by Netflix on January 24th, and to celebrate the final season, Curb Records is releasing a 12-song “soundtrack” for the show, featuring some of the big songs that appeared during the show from artists signed to Curb such as Mo Pitney, Lee Brice, and Wynonna and the Big Noise. It also finally includes the new version of “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” (listen below).
Whatever you thought about the show itself, The Ranch resulted in some serious mailbox money for many cool artists, including Corb Lund, the Turnpike Troubadours, American Aquarium, Brandi Carlile, John Moreland, Whitney Rose, Sam Outlaw, the Cactus Blossoms, and many more whose music was featured in the series, and some multiple times. Country legends like Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam were also featured in the soundtrack, and there was commonly jokes and other dialogue that talked about country music directly in the series.
The music supervisor for The Ranch is Frankie Pine, who was also the music supervisor for ABC’s big country music drama Nashville. Similarly, Nashville won praise for not just selecting songs from mainstream artists, but digging a little deeper to find the right song for the right moment.
The Ranch (A Netflix Original Series Official Soundtrack) will be available January 24th, 2020, with a limited-edition vinyl version available February 14th.

Awesome! Now all we need is a new version of “Highwayman” with Jason Isbell, Cody Jinks, Sturgill Simpson, and Chris Stapleton.

Can the show be corny at times? Definitely, buts it’s a guilty pleasure of mine and Sam Elliot is great in it. Like you pointed out Trig, the music throughout the series and with each season being named after a country artist’s songs was great. It’ll be interesting to see who all gets played this season

Place this one in the novelty bin. Give me the original any day.

Lukas’ latest album was such a disappointment–awful, in my opinion–and I’ve never been a big fan of Shooter. Their daddies, on the other hand….

Was there any chance they were going to do something better than the original, which might be one of the greatest country songs of all time? Of course not. It’s a total novelty. And that’s how it should be taken because that’s how it was approached, to recreate what their fathers did. Judging it against the original is the wrong idea.

I’ve never seen this show… But I’m a fan of multi -cam laugh track sitcoms, so maybe I’ll give it a shot!!

No. They.Didn’t.

Seemed very sleepy and lackluster to me.

I love it.
January 24, 2020 @ 8:01 am
Boring.
January 24, 2020 @ 8:04 am
Unnecessary & tacky. I wont even listen.

Meh…I doubt anyone would care if it wasn’t Willie and Waylon’s sons doing it. And I say that as a fan of both of them.

I don’t like how this version is in 4/4. The original 6/8 time version sounds way better in my opinion.
January 24, 2020 @ 1:37 pm
As you said, it’s kind of a novelty. Obviously this doesn’t compare to their dads’ version, but anything that gets classic country songs and the names Nelson and Jennings back in the public eye is OK by me.

Shooter’s not a singer. He just isn’t.
January 24, 2020 @ 8:24 pm
Well after all they aren’t in anyway trying to be their Fathers….No doubt Waylon would have been proud and I’m sure Willie is. I like it, much better than lot of stuff they are playing on Country Radios….of course there is always the Luke Bryans out there for other listeners.

A couple unremarkable and completely forgettable voices get together to cover a classic tune by two of the most unique and unmistakable voices in Country Music history. Pass. This latest batch of famous country offspring (Hank III included) ain’t cutting it. Say no to nepotism and dynasties.
January 28, 2020 @ 9:56 pm
Hey, most offspring of music stars fail under their own weight. Nepotism only carries one so far.
Funny, but the most successful two-generation separate acts in country music are Hank Williams and Hank Williams Jr.; and Johnny Cash and Rosanne Cash. (That’s in terms of both #1 hit records, and actual quality.)

75% of the commenters here are fucking stupid. They’re paying tribute to their fathers. Of course it’s not as good as the classic. Lighten the fuck up. Christ.

I agree. And I’d agree even more, without the cursing. But I guess that’s a generational thing.
