Newest Additions to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#19)
It’s been a great time to be a country music fan over the last few weeks as incredible album releases from a cavalcade of artists has put a stress test on people’s physical copy budgets, and pushed Saving Country Music to maximum capacity for publishing reviews. But these are all good problems to have, and will leave us flush for stuff to listen to well into the summer.
Sarah Shook‘s new album Years is so damn good, it’s getting a 2nd addition on the Saving Country Music Top 25 playlist with the Western swing-inspired “Damned If I Do, Damned If I Don’t” making the newest additions. Western Centuries also just released a stellar collection, and “Earthy Justice” from the album makes it into the rotation. Let’s not allow Pat Reedy and the Longtime Goners‘ new album That’s All There Is be overshadowed by all the other great releases. “Nashville 3am” and its accompanying video are definitely worth a spin.
And the new releases aren’t stopping any time soon. Jason Boland and the Stragglers have their new album Hard Times Are Relative coming May 18th, and their debut single with Sunny Sweeney called “I Don’t Deserve You” finds Boland in top honky tonk form. And lastly it’s a bit of a wild card, but the piano tune “Don’t Come To Nashville” from Dakota Jay is just too damn good, and too damn indicative of the spirit of Saving Country Music to ignore, and it makes its way near the top of the list.
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist primarily lives on Spotify, but is also available for those who use Google Play, and now on Apple Music thanks to Country Exclusive. For those who don’t stream, you can still find the song recommendations in list form below.

Hey Trig, Sons of Bill is going to release a new record soon. I heard some new songs tonight that sounded great. Pedal steel, telecaster, Rhodes — it’s all good, very high quality lyrical material. They often sound like Son Volt without the whole “wtf is he talking about” thing. Highly recommended.

I’m hip to Sons of Bill. I’ll keep an eye out for the new album. Wrote about them a few years ago:

Not everyday do you get to read the word “calvacade”. I like that word for some reason. 🙂
Again, thanks for keeping this list updated. I’m discovering lots of amazing new music & artists this way.

Took the thought right out of my head about the word, I laughed…lol This site has changed my musical life with the plethora of incredible artists I would’ve never heard of otherwise and now have albums in my rotation. Jinks, Sweeney, Morgan, and McBryde.

Sorry, the Dakota Jay song doesn’t seem to live on Apple Music.
We need something from Culberson County on here.

That Dakota Jay single doesn’t show up ANYWHERE – yet anyway. But the other new additions are really good – especially Jason Boland with Sunny Sweeney!!

Good to see more of the honky-tonk style music. Can’t stop playing Road Crew even though they use one of my most hated lyrics (If you know what I mean).
Wes Youssi and the County Champs / Low Down: would be an awesome addition to the saving country music community if you like honky-tonk.

Never heard of Homegrown before seeing this post. But damn are those kids amazing. Checked out several of their YouTube videos. Perfect pitch 3 part sibling harmonies… doesn’t get much better than that. And I’ll bet Katelyn becomes a future superstar.
Thanks for the recommendation!

There’s some really good stuff there, “Tori” is killer, and there isn’t a bad song on that entire
Robynn Shayne album. Thanks for taking the time to share!

I’d love to get a read on what people are thinking of Trixie Mattel. I only recently checked out his music, but I though it was, on the whole, very good. It hits kind of a sweet spot with me, and is modern (“COUNTRY HAS TO EVOLVE!” lol) while still very Country. I’d love to hear that sound gain traction and Trixie to find success, but wonder if the whole drag thing is too big a hurdle for most listeners to get past?

Stephanie,
Did you catch the Trixie Mattel review? Lots of great discussion in the comments there, just in case you missed it:

The music is good, but it’s tough for an old fogie like me, with a traditional upbringing, to get past that picture on the cover. It’s not helping him/her with the older generation.
Waiting now for all the “…ist” labels to be thrown at me.

Same here, I can pretty well get past whatever personal issues I have just fine – because the music is good.
Some of the vocals I’m not in love with, but it’s still a solid whole. What I can’t do is share, push, or promote the project much, because along comes a crowd with an agenda unrelated to the music, which just makes the conversation turn petty and nasty…
So I’ll just listen to and enjoy it, without the burden of having to defend my choice of pronoun all damned day.

Solid list..
I’m finding it hard to juggle my music listening time these days.
Still want to devote time to my classics, need to devote time for looking for the new, and then time for listening to the new stuff I discover and making the deserving classics.
I’m also an album guy.. I tend just to throw an album on and listen instead of singles etc (although the big exception I guess is the money I throw constantly on the jukeboxes when out)..

Just downloaded Spotify and listened to most of these. Love Dakota Jay and Ashley McBryde. Went and bought Caitlin Smith after the first listen.
And damn if I didn’t actually like parts of Space Cowboy!
