Newest Additions to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#33)
Now that 2019 is off and running, it’s time to get ready for some of the most anticipated releases in the early portion of the year, and we’re doing so by adding some songs from these important albums to the playlist.
Leading off the new additions is a super fun and twangy trucker tune from authentic Austin, TX honky tonk band The Golden Roses called “Bad Habit.” They recently took time off from playing gigs at places like The White Horse to record their first LP entitled Terlingua Graveyard out February 22nd.
A lot of folks can’t wait for Flatland Cavalry‘s Homeland Insecurity to be released on January 18th, and their Western-feeling song “Living By Moonlight” has made the playlist. We don’t yet have a time and place when the new Shane Smith & the Saints album will be released, but we do have a couple of new songs from the Texas music outfit, including the well-written “Mountain Girl” which makes it on the list.
Rarely do cover songs or classic standards make the Top 25 Playlist with so many great originals out there, but Josh Turner‘s version of “Amazing Grace” off his recent I Serve a Savior Gospel album is just too good to not include. Ted Russell Kamp chimes in with “Home Away From Home,” which is the first song off his album Walkin’ Shoes. And though it’s been around for a while, the release of Ashley McBryde‘s “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” as a radio single necessitates adding it here to help bolster support for this stellar track.

This may have already been covered in previous posts but are these songs in any particular order?
Trigger
January 6, 2019 @ 1:08 pm
Good question. No, they are not in an order as if they’re being ranked, or as if they represent the Top 25 songs of a given year or something. They’re put in order for optimal listening enjoyment. The primary purpose of the playlist is to keep listeners informed about the newest songs and albums being released.

Great tunes! Happy to see Josh Turner. You’re absolutely right, its easy to pass on an overdone religious standard, but his version of Amazing Grace is phenomenal. It slowly builds from an acoustic to an all out outlaw jam. Essential listening. I need to check out Kamps latest also always been a fan of his work.

While you are listening to Amazing Grace, you MUST also check out Josh’s version of “How Great Thou Art” on the same album. Not country, but just maybe the best vocals you will ever hear. The track also features Sonya Isaacs. Don’t even need to be religious to appreciate how well this is performed.

Ah man, ive been wearing the whole album out! You’re right, fantastic vocals on that track. I am religious but i agree, you dont necessarily have to be. This record if nothing else really gets you to pondering on life in a positive manner. Very powerful!

Bit off-topic, but has anyone heard of Tanner Fenoglio? His song “Leaving Midland” was randomly playing on country radio today and it’s pretty good. I actually thought this was a new Mike and the Moonpies song before looking it up!

Hey, Trigger! If anyone asked me a month ago what music genres I listened to, I’d tell them everything but heavy metal and country. I’m a total Yankee/Northerner/whatever you call it. My family is from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and though I live in Virginia I’m in the D.C. area, which is culturally the north. If that’s not proof enough, I didn’t know what biscuits and gravy were till going college further south.
The impression I had of country was made by songs like “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” and “As Good As I Once Was,” which make me want to roll my eyes into oblivion. On a recent road trip, though, my friend played some country I actually -really- liked, such as “Jolene” and “The Devil Wears A Suit And Tie.”
Curious after that, I found your website. I’ve been delving through it, and though I adore your roasts, what I really appreciate is your discussions on the industry and your commitment to keeping female artists in the conversation. This genre is no longer off the table for me. When I go hunting for more country, I’ll be checking in here to get your opinions. Thank you.

Funny story. My wife was looking for a new station on Sirius, so I recommended Outlaw Country, telling her it wouldn’t be her cup o’ tea all the time, but she’d hear enough to find it worthwhile. First day, she tells me she heard this song about tipping your hat to the stone and how, at first, she didn’t catch enough to know what it was about. But, then, she realized it was a somewhat serious song about life and death and how good of a song it was. It was by some band with “steel” in the name and had a country rock sound. After some searching, it was The Steel Woods’ “Rock That Says My Name.” So, she had me listen to it.
I was already familiar with TSW (thanks, Trig!) and had already heard “Old News.” After hearing “Rock..” and their cover of “Southern Accents,” I’m excited to hear the rest of the news album. The two originals are well written and the musicianship is solid.

Nice list as usual.
I’m going to give my Apple Music people some credit.
They have been putting together and promoting some playlists that have been surprisingly very good.
They currently have one called Country Roads (alt-country, Americana) I’ve been listening too that is pretty stellar.
There have been some others too that really good selections.

I love the list,, but can’t recall what other than “Ruby’s Stool” got dropped off
Trigger

I rarely remark on what I remove because I don’t want to act like I’m diminishing these songs. But if you want to see how the playlist progresses, all the changes are cataloged by the number. So if you use the search function of the site (upper right hand corner), you can see when things were added or removed. “Ruby’s Stool” was on the last playlist update (https://savingcountrymusic.com/newest-additions-to-saving-country-musics-top-25-current-playlist-32/), so that means it fell off on this one.
