Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#130)
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
Newest Additions:
The Wilder Blue – “True Companion” – Few things hit like a song from The Wilder Blue. Luckily we have a whole mess of them on the way November 21st via their new album Super Natural produced by Brent Cobb. The harmonies here remind you of the best of The Eagles. The Wilder Blue is one of the most underrated bands around.
Vincent Neil Emerson – “Time of the Rambler” – Speaking of anticipated albums with big producers, Shooter Jennings helped Vincent Neil Emerson with his new one The Golden Crystal Kingdom out November 10th, and this song shows off Emerson’s wordsmithing and sound to a T.
Flatland Cavalry – “New American Dream” – From their newly released album Wandering Star, “New American Dream” comes with a cutting and accurate assessment of the trappings of modern life, served with a lively chorus. Social commentary never sounded this enjoyable.
Amanda Fields, Megan McCormick – “Dying Leaves” – Amanda Fields really impressed us earlier this year with her album What, When, and Without. She returns collaborating with Megan McCormick on this perfect song for fall co-written with Sam Torode. Look for a collaborative EP from Amanda Fields and Megan McCormick in 2024.
Willy Tea Taylor – “National Treasure” – Willy Tea Taylor has been one the greatest songwriters of this generation. It’s just eluded most of the public as his music has remained mostly underground. His new album The Great Western Hangover is the perfect opportunity for the rest of the world to catch up with Willy Tea, and it’s due to songs like “National Treasure.”
Cameron Wrinkle – “I Can’t Take Me Anywhere” – Listening to Cameron Wrinkle’s new album In My Heaven will make you feel like future of traditional country music is in safe hands with this young man. This Western swing-inspired song is expertly sung and even better written.
Sean Burns – “Destroy Me” – This Canadian preservationist and bass player for Corb Lund just released an entire album of excellent under-the-radar tracks from Canadian country’s past. “Destroy Me” written by Chef Adams is a perfect example of the kind of country gold Sean Burns unearthed for the album.

Always look forward to the updates because inevitably there’s 2 or 3 songs that land perfectly for me. This week it’s Vincent Neil Emerson and Flatland. Mamma Coal’s “Dance Hall Crush” is top 10 single of the year in my book. Nothing has yet replaced “Dollar General Sign” as my song of the year but Joe Stamm Band just released an EP and the last song on it called “Your Garden” just continues to elevate the talent of that criminally underrated band. As always, I’m going to plug Ben Chapman. Although his version has a slightly different title than Brent Cobb’s but it’s the same song – Ben calls it “‘Ont Know Better” versus Brent’s “Ont Know When.” And as much as I love Brent, Ben out-grooved the master on that one.

Hey! Just wanted to suggest you should check out Ashley Campbell & Thor Jensen’s new album “Turtle Cottage” (under their duo name Campbell Jensen.) It’s not straight country, but it’s a beautiful folk-like album with just their two amazing voices & their guitars & banjo. Promise it’s worth a listen!

Man… I do NOT get the appeal of Outlaws And Mustangs (And I absolutely love Cody jinks normally). It just feels like lazy songwriting. Even the chorus that they repeat over and over again just makes no sense.
‘Outlaws and mustangs they always come home ”
Just feels like somebody needed a rhyme there.
This ain’t no David or Somewhere In The Middle

I think “Outlaws and Mustangs” is a banger. Not every song is going to be “David” or “Somewhere in the Middle.” Those were Song of the Year-caliber songs, and “David” won Song of the year. It seems a little unfair to compare every song to that level. I appreciate that the song is not some people’s jam, and I’ve seen some people saying it’s killer, and others say it sounds like radio country. I think we’ve become so accustomed to in the independent country realm to heady songs, if something is even remotely catchy we’re programmed to think it must be trite or subpar. I actually like the writing of “Outlaws and Mustangs.” It’s better than the title implies. Is it “David”? Of course not. But nothing is. That’s Cody’s best-written song.

I mean not everything has to be David but it would help if the line that they repeat over and over again actually meant something.
Mustangs always come home? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Outlaws always come home? Like from jail? Or from a long shift at the meth lab? What are they talking about here that is worth repeating over and over?

I’m going to shout out Muscadine Bloodline’s two new singles that came out Friday. Those guys seem to get better and better with every new release they put out. I thought their most recent album was worthy of a review (but I know you can’t review everything), and their emo covers EP was pretty fun as well. I don’t love much of their earlier stuff, but they’ve been trending towards more of a traditional country-rock sound the last few years and their songwriting is maturing. On top of that, they’re doing it independently, have serious mainstream appeal, and have been touring with some heavy hitters.

I know it probably doesn’t fit on this site since he’s not talked about much but I really like Kenny Chesneys Take her home. Im not a huge fan though the few songs I really like are really good and I think this fits in there very nicely. Chesney has the kind of sound that really never goes out of style so I expect a long career from him.
