Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#142)

The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
Newest Additions:
Silverada – “Eagle Rare” – Exploring new sonic landscapes to keep things interesting while still being tethered to their original sound and influences results in this very entertaining track off the new self-titled Silverada record out now. Perhaps nobody knows how better to work the obscure names of liquor brands into songs.
Morgan Wade – “Moth to a Flame” – When Morgan Wade first emerged, we were also super excited that she could develop into the female version of Tyler Childers. That’s not exactly how her career has unfolded. But “Moth to a Flame” shows that Appalachia songwriter side of her influences, and may be one of her best songs yet.
Liv Greene – “Deep Feeler” – It’s the voice of Liv Greene that will immediately pull you in. It’s the writing and the steel guitar that will keep you there. Though perhaps more at home in folk/Americana, there is a country music heart to many of Liv Greene songs. We look forward to hearing more when the album Deep Feeler is released on October 18th.
Zach Bryan” – “28” – It’s Zach Bryan’s self-awareness as he navigates through the seasons of life that instills his songs with such immediacy. Then he’s able to articulate his thoughts and experiences so poetically, he makes you feel like you experienced those moments yourself.
Tris Munsick – “Big Medicine Moon” – The Munsick brothers are out to save Western music, and Tris is now the 3rd of them to be featured on Saving Country Music. Similar to brother Sam, Tris Munsick is all about adhering to the traditions of old country & Western in new and inspired songs.
American Aquarium – “Messy As a Magnolia” – It’s the personal growth and deep realizations that so often drive home American Aquarium songs, at least in recent years. Inspired by a trash tree outside of his office window, BJ Barham makes it an illustration of his own life.

I hate to ask because you are so busy with reviews and all these festivals that you do such a good job of telling us about, but will you be reviewing the “new” Johnny Cash album. I am always curious of your take on things.
July 6, 2024 @ 10:05 am
The Johnny Cash album, and pretty much any album that appears in the “release radar” articles is being considered for review. I already reviewed three albums from that same week, and it was a week I covered two festivals as well. Then Zach Bryan and Jesse Welles basically release double albums the next week. I am cramming as much music in my ears as possible, and publishing reviews is always a priority. Thanks for the interest.

Yeah I figured this is a crazy full time for you! Appreciate all you do!

Some great adds here. I’ll say “Moth to a Flame” is Morgan’s second best song of her short career because for me nothing will ever top “The Night.” Nice to hear her singing about more positive and happy stuff though. Sadler did not produce the upcoming album, her guitar player did. So I do think we’re going to get something more on the rootsy side with this one. Red Clay Strays released an all out rocker called “Drowning” where Brandon pushes his vocal to the breaking point and it is insanely good. And Miranda finally showed she’s not all talk about her next album being more Texas and more country with “Dammit Randy.”
July 6, 2024 @ 3:03 pm
“Drowning” and “Devil in my Ear” are both excellent songs. I am excited for the next Red Clay Strays album.

Trigger, can you please add a date to the playlist titles? I use Amazon Music and each time I save the SCM playlist to my library, it overwrites the previous one.
It would be great if you added a date, then I could just save them all.
July 6, 2024 @ 3:40 pm
Hey CK,
Can you not use the numbers of the playlists? That is why I number them all in the title, so that if people want to go back and search for an update, they can find it easily. My issue with putting the dates in there is that might confuse anyone trying to search via number. Like, if I put “7-6-24” in there, someone searching for the 6th, 7th, and 24th update will also pull that one up. Would love to accommodate the request, but I think it might be tricky.
July 8, 2024 @ 2:12 pm
Got it, I will try that. Thank you for everything you do for country music

I listened to most of the latest Zach Bryan album last night. Musically I think this album is a step in the right direction. I will overtly praise him for referencing two song names in the song ‘Great American Bar Scene.’ He mentions ‘Highway Patrol’ and ‘Hey Porter’ in context with the song lyrics. I have been vocal before about how I think it’s lazy songwriting and a cheap attempt to stealing clout to name songs within a song, but the vast majority of Zach Bryan fans won’t know those two songs. This should make every simpleton in a cowboy hat feel stupid for going back to the same well as all these other fake bro cowboy types who only chase trends. At least Zach put some thought into it rather than derailing a potentially original idea by throwing in the 2000th Cash or Hank reference.
I don’t even fully know what to think about the John Mayer and Springsteen collabs. On the John Mayer he is musically half-copying and phoning in the guitar solo on ‘I Guess I Just Feel Like.’ On the Springsteen collab the drums are directly copying the rhythm from ‘I’m on Fire.’ I don’t know if these two realize that Zach is a powerhouse live and they are wanting to collab with him simply because of that reason or they genuinel think he has artistic talent.
The usual Zach lyrical tropes are there. However I am going to hold off on any critical comments until I listen to the album more. On a first listen he has gotten away from some of his musical cliques. Lyrically he has not.

Meanwhile, Wallen just released “Lies, Lies, Lies.” Now, to all throat-jumpers, I do not listen to the majority of his songs.
This song is interesting both in lyrics and arrangement. The arrangement and background instrumentation is worthy of note. Sometime ago I stated that if he could use his vast popularity to release some “good” country songs, he could make a huge impact for more traditional fans, and help his current fans see that there is something brewing in the more traditional landscape.
This song isn’t the one, but it is a step in the right direction. Might be worth a listen. Like I said, it is “interesting”. He needs to continue in this direction.
July 6, 2024 @ 7:35 pm
Wallen has released many country songs. The latest ones have been more pop related i guess but maybe thats where the money is.
July 6, 2024 @ 10:22 pm
Dude, really?? I’m not a throat jumper, I actually liked a few older Wallen songs but we have Zach Top, Jesse Daniel, and Ben Jarrell coming next week ALL 100% real Country, nobody really cares about Snorgan Wallen’s latest tunes on here or the “direction” he may be going in…..LOL ….. Get a clue….read the room!!!
July 6, 2024 @ 11:16 pm
Insulting someone because you don’t agree with their opinion. Yep, looks like a throat jumper to me.
July 7, 2024 @ 6:50 am
Ya know what Dennis? After a good nights sleep, you’re right. I’d like to apologize to Wayne for jumping down his throat while claiming to not be a throat jumper…..I see the irony. What’s worse is I hadn’t even listened to the song. So I just gave the song a spin out of curiosity, and even taking into consideration Wayne’s opinion on the “direction” of his current to future songs, I hear a pedestrian song written by no less than 4 guys, none of whom is named Wallen. Thus eliciting that age old question, “it took 4 guys to write this?” Never the less, maybe I’m missing something here? Wayne had an intelligent take on it, and I should’ve respected it like I want people to respect mine. Sorry Wayne.
July 7, 2024 @ 3:16 pm
JB, no issues with ya. You listened to it with open mind and have an opinion. I can respect that.
July 30, 2024 @ 12:50 am
Song was written by three dudes and one girl, so wrong there
Don’t knock morgan for putting out a song he didn’t write unless you’re prepared to never listen to Strait again. Majority of his songs were written by other writers. Strait was successful bc of his ability to pick great songs even if they weren’t his own. Something missing amongst the artists of today’s times. The singer of midland has a ton of credits… You think he “wrote” those songs? Get real man.
The problem today is every artist wants their name on their songs—even if they didn’t do anything other than show up for the write and sit on their ass. And that joke is a lot older than yours…
Lies is a hell of a song, and I wouldn’t dare listen to someone who has never written one for their opinion of it.
July 7, 2024 @ 9:47 pm
I think it’s better than many of his other songs and it could be popular among acoustic performers if the song has longevity. His voice is so grating on my hears that it almost gives me a headache trying to listen to it – and I rarely get headaches. Musically it sounds dated like 2012 ish. It’s hard for me to put my finger on whatever current trends are.
July 7, 2024 @ 5:02 am
Trigger my love thank you for adding Kaitlyn Butts to your playlist. I was wondering will you review the new Zach Bryan LP
July 7, 2024 @ 6:57 pm
Probably.
July 7, 2024 @ 3:47 pm
Finally a Munsick I can vibe with. His voice kinda reminds me of Jesse Daniel
July 7, 2024 @ 4:44 pm
Any chance of Josh Turner’s new songs being added to the playlist?
July 7, 2024 @ 6:59 pm
If they’re any good. The one he released in April would stick out here like a sore thumb. The latest one highlights his voice well, but the writing is still pretty mainstream radio.
MCA screwed his career. At this point, they’re just trying to land the plane so they can both depart.
July 14, 2024 @ 5:24 am
His two singles are more country than many current inclusions, especially AA and Bryan.
They are fun summer songs. If that is mainstream, so be it. Not all country songs are emo.
MCA and Bro-Country derailed his career. No argument here.
July 14, 2024 @ 12:25 pm
I understand. But being “more country” really isn’t the reason I include songs here. One of the primary goals of the playlist is to expose and playlist songs nobody else is. The songs all need to also work together somewhat. I like Josh Turner, and if a song of his better fits the format, I’d be more than happy to add it.
July 7, 2024 @ 6:06 pm
I feel like “real country” (as Lee Ann Womack would call it) is in danger of becoming the new college radio, or maybe it already is and I’m late in pointing this out.
