Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#155)

Don’t be caught uttering the words “Today’s country music sucks.” There’s perhaps never been more good country music out there right at your fingertips. You just have to know where to find it. That’s what this playlist is for.
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
Newest Additions:
William Beckmann – “Honky Tonk Blue” – William is quickly distinguishing himself as one of the premier traditional country singers of the new generation, and this new song only helps elevate that prestige. Now signed to Warner Music Nashville, Beckmann could very well be part of the spear tip of the neotraditionalist surge, just with a more refined and classic style. This new song was co-written by Chris Stapleton.
Jake Worthington w/ Marty Stuart – “I’m The One” – There isn’t much bigger praise for a young neotraditionalist than to not only have Marty Stuart co-write a song with you, but then to appear on it as well. Jake Worthington is winning over all the oldtimers by giving them hope for the future of country music with songs like “I’m The One.”
Kelsey Waldon – “Comanche” – Named after her 1998 Jeep truck that looks like a Cherokee missing a topper, Kelsey Waldon uses the vehicle as symbolism for strength in solitude. “Comanche” is the debut track from Kelsey’s new album Every Ghost out June 20th.
Walker Montgomery – “Almost, so Close, so Long, Goodbye” – Many guys are rising up to rekindle the ’90s country sounds, but Walker Montgomery’s one of the few that comes in direct lineage of it as the son of John Michael Montgomery. Earlier in his career, he dabbled a bit more with the radio side of country. But his last few single have been certified country heaters, and “Almost, so Close” is no exception.
Lola Kirke – “241s” – Lola Kirke’s new album Trailblazer has lots of folks singing her praises, even if it comes with some doses of indie rock. “241s” is a straight country heartbreaker though, and one of multiple quality country tracks on the record.
Jesse Daniel – “My Time Is Gonna Come” – Boy, we sure hope Jesse Daniel’s time is gonna come just around the corner. He’s certainly got the songs, the sound, and the talent to break out big, and nobody deserves it more than Jesse. Hopefully his new album Son of the San Lorenzo out June 6th sparks a fire.

Of the new ones, Jesse Daniel’s track and the Jake Worthington/Marty Stuart collab are in heavy rotation here. Cody’s Put The Whiskey Down is good too, but it was Hailey Whitter’s new song, High On The Hog that was the week’s winner in the Jeep. Can’t wait for the album!
On the local front, it’s all happenin’ north of me in Wisconsin as Dan Lepien drops another new toe tappin’ song called Neon Dream from his upcoming album Honky Tonk Traditional (out May 16th), and Milwaukee’s Wire and Nail’s EP Rippin’ Darts & Breakin’ Hearts came out last week. They’ll be down here Friday at Chicago’s hottest new Country bar, called ironically Broken Hearts, with Meg and The Wheelers. Joe Stamm and his boys announced a new album called Little Crosses that they’re doing a crowdfunding thing for, so get over there and buy a bundle to help him out.

…almost beats bacon and ribs, hailey whitters’ “high on the hog”. what a song a what a delivery.

Joe played the title track “Little Crosses” acoustic a month ago when he was here. Based on what I heard, it’s another brutal sad song that only Joe can do justice and a potential song of the year candidate.

241s on Lola Kirke’s album is great. My current favorites on there are Marlboro Lights & Madonna and Hungover Thinkin. But for me it’s going to be one that keeps revealing why a different song is actually my favorite

…amen to that intro and the following list.

Lola Kirk is getting a ton of play time on my cans. As much as I like Jinks’ previous single “Put the Whiskey Down” this latest one called “Snake Bit” is next level good and a giant FU to the corporate music machine. So freakin’ good. “Three Packs a Day” Sheyna Gee dropped a super-country single last week called “If I Could” drenched in fiddle, banjo, and her signature rasp that is simply unmatched even by Tanya.

Though a lot of people are giving the new Cody Jinks song credit for going after the music business, I’m not exactly sure that’s what that is. It feels targeted at an individual. That might be someone in the music business (my guess is that it is). But I think his ire is more targeted.

Have you been able to give the new The Wilder Blue record a listen?

Yes, hoping to have a review up soon.

Funky swampy New Orleans has been quite a bit country the past couple weeks. Cody started off his tour here and included not only a burnin’ ‘Put the Whiskey Down’ but another, he said, world premier ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ that was a perfect fit for here. And who knew AC’DC’s ‘Long way to the Top’ needed steel guitar 😉
Tyler Childers started the stateside leg of his tour here last Thursday and it was fantastic. Great production design and a wonderful acoustic set included.
Saturday got not only Lola Kirke but Zach Top and Charley Crockett at our Hogs for the Cause festival. Favorite set of the day though was the Vandoliers with special guest Zach Moulton on steel and guitar. New songs from their upcoming album include one honky tonker that’ll easily fit onto this playlist when it’s released.

“Honky Tonk Blue” is a great song.
So is Stuart’s duet.

There is a lot of fantastic music in this playlist. I really like Tony Logue; he is a real find as is Matt Daniel. I could go on and on……a great listen.
