Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#160)

The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
Newest Additions:
Randall King, Braxton Keith – “Cheatin’ On My Honky Tonk” – Two of the very top neotraditional revivalists of our time team up on this track that will turn you country if you weren’t before.
Joshua Ray Walker – “Keys To The Tacoma” – Walker has released a devilishly catchy album called Tropicana that’s full of early 00’s radio-style songs that will live inside you and refuse to come out once you hear it. Case in point is “Keys To The Tacoma” that would have been a #1 hit in the Y2K era.
Nikki Lane – “Woodruff City Limit” – There’s little fond recollection found in “Woodruff City Limit.” Instead, the verses find Nikki Lane reckoning with formidable memories that come flooding forth from repressed recesses after her father’s death. It’s already an early Song of the Year contender.
Waylon Jennings – “Songbird” – If you missed the news, Waylon has THREE albums of unheard music on the way. Our first taste is “Songbird” originally written and sung by Christine McVie, and appearing on the iconic 1977 Fleetwood Mac album Rumors. On paper this might not make much sense as a Waylon song. On tape, it’s par excellence. It’s the title track for the first of the three albums out October 3rd.
Kashus Culpepper, Sierra Ferrell – “Broken Wing Bird” – Kashus Culpepper is like a heavyweight champion, throwing out songs like haymakers, infused with blues and soul, but with just enough country inspiration to find their way into a redneck’s heart. with ‘Broken Wing Bird,” he offers his most country song yet, taking inspiration from Willie Nelson, and vocal contributions from Sierra Ferrell.
James McMurtry – “Pinocchio In Vegas” – This song might initially seem like a humorous hypothetical about the post Disney life of a beloved character. But in truth, it’s all about how we often lose precious life information in the passing of our parents. This is the kind of multi-layered songwriting that has put McMurtry at the pinnacle of the craft.
Casey Chesnutt – “Uninvited Guest” – The son of Mark Chesnutt is out with a new single, and it’s a good one. Co-written by Jeff Stevens and Marv Green, it proves the true country instincts of the Chesnutt clan did not skip a generation.
Jesse Daniel – “He”– Carefully crafted songwriting usually not captured in honky tonk songs presents itself regularly on Jesse Daniel’s new album Son of the San Lorenzo. The song “He” is a great example of this, where Jesse presents a reflective perspective, going back in time to offer advice to his younger self that he would have loved to heed at the time.

In re: Pinocchio
I’m a Xennial. Half my friends from high school are clearly defined gen x and the other half millennials. I don’t get into this with friends, but in my family, no one younger than me gives a rats ass about their family history.
When I try sharing stories about the old timers with them, I get blank stares. No, me telling you about your Uncle Joe’s time as a coreman in Vietnam isn’t the same as me telling you my own stories. They do not care. Hopefully this isn’t true across other families.
Like always, a McMurtry albums gives us plenty to think about.

Indianola,
Friend’s are nice and good to have, but at the end of the day?
Families is all you have to depend on !
Family history is important to you, then tell them friend’s off?
It’s okay to, be proud of your family heritage and relationships
And the benefits, just knowing that you and your families were
Part of this Great Country of ours🇺🇲
Take care and enjoy learning about your family tree, gathering all information now, will keep you from guessing later and pictures?
Take advantage of the time and resources, someday you’ll be glad
You did? I waited almost too late, exceptions was my sister save alot
For me as veteran I appreciated it about your uncle and his service 🇺🇲🪖

Love McMurtry’s new album. Glad to see you included “Pinocchio in Vegas.” That and “Sons of the Second Sons” were the two that really stood out for me, and that’s saying something because there isn’t a bad song in the bunch.

I know that Waylon Jennings is considered untouchable by many. He is of course one of the greats.
But his version of Songbird is just embarrassing kitsch. Fleetwood Mac are not easy to interpret. And here Jennings fails completely.
It’s extremely rare for country artists to do decent interpretations of pop songs anyway. Jennings’ “Songbird” is another negative example of this.

We all know that Jeremy Pinnell rips (thanks Bones). Well, he just released a new single, “Come Home to Me” and it is really damn good. If you haven’t already, check it out – you’ll be glad you did.
