Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#85)
Now that the summer has commenced in earnest and the COVID-19 pandemic is mostly behind us, it’s time to hit the road, and hang out with friends, and listen to the country songs from artists that the mainstream won’t mess with, but that define the best that country music has to offer at the moment.
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to.
Newest Additions:
Hannah Juanita – “I’m Gonna Leave You” – When a press release was disseminated and emblazoned with the header that Hannah Junaita wanted to save country music with her new album called Hardliner, it certainly piqued interest around here. Luckily it wasn’t just all talk. A swim through her new album delivers all manner of classic country goodness.
James McMurtry – “Canola Fields” – In a brilliant economy of words, James McMurtry can bring alive entire characters and expansive landscapes in songs, revealing details down to the crevices in the dried soil, and the contours of a face in the mind’s eye. That’s what he does with “Canola Fields”—the lead song from his first album in seven years called The Horses and the Hounds out August 20th.
Red Shahan – “Pipe Dream” – A lot of folks showering Red Shahan’s new album Javelina with praise. “Pipe Dream” is perhaps the best example of the really incisive songwriting it features, bolstered by the smart production of Marc Ford.
Nefesh Mountain – “Wanderlust” – Bluegrass doesn’t always make it onto the playlist unless it’s something really special, and that’s what Nefesh Mountain has with the lead song off their new album Songs For The Sparrows. Featuring Jerry Douglas and Brian Sutton, this song is pure bluegrass goodness.
Bo DePeña – “Second Cup of Coffee” – This is one of numerous songs on Bo’s new album It’s About To Get Western that has you checking the liner notes, making sure a song so classically well-written wasn’t recorded long about by some country legend. Nope, it’s a Bo original.
Justin Wells – “Hard Out Here” – If Justin Wells drops a new song, you drop everything else and listen, and “Hard Out Here” is a good one. Just a standalone single for the moment ahead of some tour dates he’s playing with Chance McCoy and Adam Lee. But perhaps a precursor to some more new music from him soon.
