On Morgan Wallen Getting Booted From “Saturday Night Live”
Earlier this week, Morgan Wallen and his antics last weekend surrounding the University of Alabama football game Saturday (10-3) was all everybody was talking about in mainstream country, though nobody was writing about it. Dozens of TikTok videos of the 27-year-old’s maskless partying with college-aged girls emerged, and specifically of Wallen sucking face with half a dozen of them.
Even though the videos were being circulated widely and feverishly discussed on social media, it didn’t make it into proper media anywhere, as it probably shouldn’t have. Even the tabloids avoided it as a story, because it wasn’t one, and it still really isn’t. Yes, Morgan Wallen sired a child who was born back in July, but the status of the mother is baby mama, not wife. So there was no infidelity involved, and nothing he did was illegal. It was just a country bumpkin with some hit songs living the rock star life. It was imbecilic, yet typical behavior between consenting young adults.
That doesn’t mean it wasn’t disconcerting. Lo and behold, a guy who launched his career collaborating with Florida Georgia Line, and whose producer is Joey Moi who helped make FGL and Nickelback famous is a total douche canoe. The Tennessee native isn’t even an Alabama fan. You normally see him dudded out in Knoxville Orange. Wallen just crossed state lines as a vector of disease because that’s where the party was, and he’s already burned out his welcome on Lower Broadway in Nashville, where he was arrested getting bounced out of Kid Rock’s bar of all places. Yeah, that wasn’t a particularly good look either.
But imagine if country music’s most notorious partiers and philanderers like Hank Williams were around during the time of social media, and what kind of debauchery would have been chronicled? What we already know about these country legends and have the mug shots to prove is notorious enough. In fact we celebrate and glorify these men for their antics and indiscretions. The difference here though is this isn’t ol’ Hank traveling down the “Lost Highway” of broken-heartedness and addiction. This is a dude with a mullet and mostly bad pop country songs making an ass of himself. Nonetheless, as ol’ Hank once notoriously sang about in his time, “Mind Your Own Business.”
Sure, the lack of a mask is troubling. And even though the COVID-19 Public Shame Committee can overreact at times—and destroying people’s lives for minor offenses and never showing forgiveness while professing compassion and open-mindedness has become the new world sport—it’s still not a good look for a guy of Morgan Wallen’s status to be setting such bad examples, and on multiple points.
And now it’s cost Morgan Wallen his opportunity to make his debut on Saturday Night Live this week, which cited COVID-19 protocol in the cancellation. It’s probably a smart move on their part. There are many more worthy people who deserve that honor anyway. Get Tyler Childers, or Jason Isbell, Ashley McBryde, or Miranda Lambert. They’re due the opportunity, and will take it more seriously. Yes, Morgan Wallen is one of the hottest things in country music at the moment, right up there with Luke Combs. But aside from turning in a worthy rendition of Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up,” the guy just doesn’t have a whole lot.
Morgan Wallen’s Wednesday afternoon apology seemed sincere, backwards baseball cap and all. “I think I have some growing up to do. You know, I think I’ve lost myself a little bit,” he says. “I’ve tried to find joy in the wrong places, and, I don’t know, it’s left me with less joy. So I’m going to go try to work on that. I’m gonna take a step back from the spotlight for a little while and go work on myself.”
But you also recall the moment of the birth of his out-of-wedlock child in mid July when Morgan Wallen professed, “I’m a changed man. I’ll be the Dad you deserve as well as the co-parent your mother deserves. Since you were born, I know that every decision I make will be with you in mind. I promise I’ll always protect you, and do my best to be an example of a good, godly man just like my daddy was for me.”
That was less than three months ago. Guys who can convince six different women eight years younger than them to suck face on the same night tend to have a curios superpower to talk their way out of anything. It’s one of the things that makes them so attractive.
But all of this doesn’t feel like it just has to do with Morgan Wallen. It has to do with the environment today’s country artists are asked to navigate.
Far be it from me to stick up for Morgan Wallen, and the maskless cavorting is not defensible in this environment, no question. But when overactive Twitter handles obsessed with canceling artists and destroying their careers over any perceived slight becomes commonplace, and tied specifically to severe ideologies obsessed with weeding out those who refuse to comply with their demands, it becomes troublesome on a grander scale. Morgan Wallen’s Saturday night in Tuscaloosa was not a story. Saving Country Music, and a dozen other outlets concluded this for days until social media fury became too hot to handle.
That doesn’t mean Morgan Wallen didn’t deserve to get booted from SNL, which he arguably didn’t deserve to be appearing on in the first place. But the Uptight Brigade that used to be obsessed with censoring song lyrics and finding Satanism everywhere in society has now shape shifted, and they’re still just as uncool. Morgan Wallen was a buffoon. But slap him on the wrist, give him a COVID test, and move on. He’s not the boogeyman. He’s just a hillbilly with a hit record.
….And good gosh ladies, if you see a guy like this, whatever you do, no matter how famous he is, or your relative level of sobriety, for the love of God, and for the whole of society, don’t screw them.

As far as I know, I think SNL also said they would try and reschedule him at another time, so it’s more like getting postponed than getting cancelled I suppose. At least I think that’s what he said in his apology video.
Clearly the guy has some growing up to do, but I appreciate Morgan owning up to his mistakes and I hope he really does use this as an opportunity to become a better person. His apology seemed genuine and sincere, and it seems to me like his heart’s in the right place. I’ll be rooting for him to get better.

The type of music that Hardy and Morgan Wallen are putting out needs a name. I’m torn between “Trailer Trash Country and White Trash Country. My only problem with those two names is that I know folks (that I also like) who live in trailers and also might be considered white trash. I really hope that Hardy and Morgan Wallen are nothing more than guys you come across in the bargain bin at Walmart sooner than later.
Who cares
October 8, 2020 @ 12:08 pm
just call it Trash Country, avoids any pitfalls.
Personally I think the bargain bin at Walmart would be too good for this music. The shear fact it is still available would be the problem.

No one is looking for ways “around the rules” they follow standard procedure, add an extra step of payment and minimize the risk. The other party was partying with a group of people wothout a mask and kissing multiple girls. Nothing hypocritical abou these precautions at all.

it would only be hypocritical if wallen’s replacement, jack white, also had footage of him circulating for what they decided to uninvite wallen for. having an audience (which they can) is not the same, unless they have footage of people in the audience also acting in such an irresponsible way. hypocrisy doesn’t just mean things you don’t like, bub.
i suspect, based on your bringing up politics, you have no problem with trump for finding tax loopholes and making questionable deductions to pay next to no income tax over the past 15 years, yet are scorning SNL for finding and using a loophole – which is an actual example hypocrisy.

Ironically, Grady Smith (Youtube critic) – has stated on numerous occasions lately that Morgan can do no wrong to the eye’s of his fans. Any bad press makes him into a more “folk hero” dude.
His statement hasn’t aged well.
Trigger
October 8, 2020 @ 1:47 pm
I’d say Grady is mostly right about that. I was going to broach how Wallen, Riley Green, and Koe Wetzel all inhabit a space where they’re unapologetically counter-productive to the politically correct moment we’re in right now, and perhaps will in the future. But I definitely think this incident helps Morgan Wallen with many of his fans.
Marty K
October 8, 2020 @ 3:04 pm
Agreed. His fans don’t give a shit that he did this. Personally, COVID or not, I find it a bit gross. Age difference, having a kid and still sucking face with teenagers is just weird to me. But there was consent so whatever. I think I saw more of his fans (predominantly girls in their late teens, early 20s) not be upset with the fact that he did this, but that he didn’t do this with them. So I still think Grady is right, he can do no wrong with his fans.
Personally, I don’t care for much (if any) of his music. Hope he learns a lesson or two, if not for him..for his kids sake. I think losing a primetime spot to play music and get more exposure is punishment enough.

That’s an interesting topic and one I’d be curious to hear more about. I do think (to change the topic a bit) that their musical styles are pretty distinct from each other. A significant percentage of the population doesn’t believe in masks. A significant percentage of the population may believe in masks but doesn’t like being told what to do. A significant percentage of the population doesn’t feel an overtly liberal show like SNL should be making policy decisions.
Then, you have the non-COVID aspect of what he did. Guys can respect an unattractive dude hooking up with a bunch of Alabama sorority girls. Girls like the idea that he was actually making out with fans – means they have a chance with him. Both guys and girls like the idea that he parties like a normal person, as opposed to someone who just sits in the VIP room at a posh LA night club for 30 minutes purely for the sake of getting photographed.

People aren’t offended by the immature behavior, they’re offended by the fact that he and his face-sucking fans are taking extra-special super-duper risks on spreading an infection that can affect lots of people outside their immediate circle. like, those college girls are completely fine with a round of spin the bottle/COVID russian roulette with this guy, but the joe schmoe cashier at the supermarket who has to deal with them a week from now who is now at risk if they passed something around by doing this.
People care when celebrities do this now only because they’re a role model of sorts, and they play a part in normalizing stupid behavior. Most of the “normal” ltraditional kinds of rockstar stupid behavior don’t affect all that many people, but with COVID we can get things like superspreader events where if stupidity gets a few people sick and it can quickly get out of hand into a dozen or a few dozen. It happening among young people rather than, oh, say, the White House last week, is almost more dangerous because people in their 20’s are more likely to be asymptomatic carriers and thus spread the pandemic more widely out of ignorance. That’s why people care about this kind of thing being a public instagram stupidity.

I can promise you that his sincere apology was not 100% heartfelt. First, he received a call from Lorne Michaels cancelling his appearance. Second, the ass chewing he got from his record company and management probably was the first time someone has told this guy “NO” since he had his first hit record. People can do what they want, but did this guy did not stop long enough to think he was going to be going to NYC where everything is still basically on lockdown from a filming standpoint. Yet, he goes to Alabama and sucks face with a bunch of tarts that don’t believe that Covid has killed 200,000 people. When I see young people make such stupid mistakes, it makes me think “too much too soon.”
Here’s some advice. Go away for awhile, cut your stupid-looking mullet, reinvent yourself, apologize to everyone that helped get you that spot on SNL and learn something from it. Most importantly, stop thinking you will always be the hottest thing in Nashville because there is someone out there that will eventually take your place.

Where do you start?
Heard from Ryan Adams lately? His ex’s said he was an asshole. The horror! How about Al Franken? Charlie Rose? Garrison Keillor, who it’s still unclear if he ever did anything wrong? See the furor yesterday when it was announced Mel Gibson was cast in a new movie? Some of these men did you pretty awful things. But they should also have the opportunity to be reformed and forgiven. Some probably don’t, like Bill Cosby, and Harvey Weinstein. This is one of the fundamental tenets of a liberal society.
ronnie
October 9, 2020 @ 9:52 am
Dude come on. Ryan Adams was accused of sending pictures of his dick to a child. Mel Gipson still makes and stars in big hollywood movies after getting caught on tape saying he hoped his wife was raped by a pack of n words. What do you want? People on the internet aren’t a monolith. If you do shitty things a certain percentage of the population isn’t going to forgive you. Actions have consequences, even if you didn’t hear about a lot backlash pre social media doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.
Trigger
October 9, 2020 @ 10:27 am
Look, you came to the wrong place if you are expecting me to defend the actions of Ryan Adams, Mel Gibson, or Morgan Wallen. As I said in the article, Morgan’s actions were indefensible, and so were the ones from these men. But there are also plenty of examples of individuals simply being accused with no evidence, and having their careers destroyed. But overall, I was simply pointing out that forgiveness and rehabilitation should be, and must be an imperative of any classically liberal society to function, and this has been forgotten by many in a rush to purge society of people who think differently from us, on both sides of the cultural divide.
And by the way, embedded in that accusation against Ryan Adams was the information that he specifically questioned the young woman on her age, and that she lied. Again, I’m not going to defend him. But there are men and women accused of much worse still functioning in society, while yes, his life and career have been destroyed. I’m not saying Ryan Adams shouldn’t be held accountable for his actions. I’m just asking if the punishment fits the crime … as someone who was once called out directly by Ryan Adams, and is blocked by him on social media.
Mike

Do not mistake this for ass kissing.
That is the subject i receive an F in.
Guess just not indoctrinable, though several Universities have tried.

Ryan Adams sent a dick pic to a minor (one of many women he approached about “helping their careers,” so that he could nail them).
He also spent years emotionally abusing his wife.
His main issue, though, is that he’s a prick, too boot. If he had done all that while being “chill,” he’d have a ton of people making excuses for him.

Being canceled (or rescheduled) from Saturday Night Liberal (SNL) is like getting a call from the dentist or proctologist saying your appointment has to be cancelled. I see no negative in this.

Wallen is getting more publicity from this then if he’d actually gone on SNL (which has sucked for the last 20-25 years).

Isn’t the real issue here that his music SUCKS?

I’d cancel him based on his music more so than what he did.

I feel like he could be a damn good country star if he tried. The sad part is he doesn’t. Honestly I can’t blame him for partying. I’m a college freshmen and did it and I got COVID! Well at least I’ll be immune. Those girls in the video are just as much to blame for spreading Covid and speaking from what I have seen very few college students wear mask, only the minimal requirements such as going to class or Walmart.

Yeah well how many people have you heard getting it multiple times? So far I’ve only heard of two, so catching it again it not at all one of my concerns. When you get a disease you get immunity.

Thank you for confirming what I said. Only two people are reinfected. Therefore I have nothing to worry about. We have to have some type of immunity if out of all the people who have had COVID only 2 maybe 3 were reinfected with it.

That’s some mighty selective reading you did there!

He demonstrated reckless, unsafe, and selfish behavior in the days leading up to an appearance on a show which is taking great measures to protect its cast, crew, and live audience from COVID.
That sentence is the entire story. Not his infidelity. Not political correctness. Not cancel culture.
If I worked for SNL, I would be grateful that they’re taking the health and safety of their employees and audience members so seriously.

I might be wrong, but I think if Hal Willner were still alive Wallen wouldn’t have even been booked. He had much better taste than that.

Like with a lot of people these types of stories always catch my eye, when they really shouldn’t.
That being said, in future articles please don’t refer to Hank when talking about dickhead wallen and the like. Hank had a problematic life and talent in spades. These countrypop clowns have neither one, nor the other.

It’s absurd to act like you know what YOU would do if you were in his situation. I am no fan of his, but i do know that in my 20’s, if i had college girls throwing themselves at me, and a big pile of money in the bank, I would be doing the same exact thing. Unless you’ve been a star country singer in your prime with millions in the bank at 27 years old, it’s tough to speak on what you’d do if you were in his situation.

Willie Geist interviewed Lorne Michaels as this was happening. You can hear his take at 15:15 in the podcast. (interesting side note – Lorne was 30 when SNL started 45 years ago).
