Past Due: Who Should Be The Next Grand Ole Opry Member?
Rascal Flatts were invited to become Grand Ole Opry members in September of 2011. Darius Rucker was asked to become an Opry member roughly a year later, in early October of 2012. Less than a year later, in August of 2013, Old Crow Medicine Show was invited to join country music’s most exclusive club, and then about 14 months later, in October of 2014, Little Big Town was asked to join.
2015 came and went without any new Grand Ole Opry members announced. And here we are five months into 2016, and still there’s been no new Opry invitations. That means the Opry is (hypothetically) due.
There is no set amount of members the Grand Ole Opry looks to keep. At the beginning of 2015, there were 65 members. Since then, two members have passed away: “Little” Jimmy Dickens and Jim Ed Brown, leaving the institution with 63 members.
A big issue with the Grand Ole Opry in recent years has been trying to get standing members to meet their performance obligations. Though the Opry loves to add high-profile names from country’s current radio stars, these performers tend to sign on to receive the distinction of being Opry members, but don’t actually want to play the appointed number of slots for membership.
Certain artists like Blake Shelton have become notorious for shirking their Opry obligations, along with many of the Opry’s other new and younger inductees. Carrie Underwood is the only current superstar who regularly meets her Opry performance commitments. Though the actual number of performances an artist is expected to make is up for debate, it is thought that at least 10 appearances is what is expected of members.
READ: Grand Ole Opry’s Newest Members Not Paying Their Dues
Old Crow Medicine Show is the only recent Opry inductee that could be considered traditional country, so it would be nice to see the next new member be an artist interested in preserving the roots of the genre, and possibly be more willing to meet their performance obligations. Perhaps one of the reasons the Opry hasn’t announced any new names yet is they’re looking for the ideal candidate that could be a flashy name, but also a responsible member.
To meet the performance obligations, it helps if the artist lives in Nashville. That is one of the reasons that a number of country legends are not members, even though you might assume they are. When Merle Haggard passed away, he wasn’t an Opry member. Native Texans Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, George Strait, and Billy Joe Shaver are not Opry members, and likely would not be interested in taking on the responsibility since they live far away, even though they would make perfect names to add to the Grand Ole Opry roster. Same goes for Dwight Yoakam, who lives in California. Hank Williams Jr. is in Tennessee often, but likely doesn’t want to hassle with the Opry, and has been outspoken about the institution needing to Reinstate Hank Williams.
Texans Dale Watson, Lee Ann Womack, and Aaron Watson would also make good candidates, but may not be interested due to the obligations.
So who would meake some good candidates for the Grand Ole Opry’s newest member?
Current Artists
Miranda Lambert – After her split from absentee Opry member Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert has been spending more and more time in Nashville. She would be a flashy name that would excite mainstream fans, but that also has some cred with older fans from some of her more traditional country from earlier in her career. The Opry would likely love to have Miranda, if she would accept and commit.
Kacey Musgraves – Kacey seems about perfect for the Opry. She’s a current name, but takes the traditions of country to heart in both song and style. She seems to truly love the Opry institution and stage, and isn’t so pricey that she couldn’t make 10 performances a year without sacrificing.
Jamey Johnson – Jamey Johnson seems perfectly content these days only worrying about playing shows that include many classic country covers. He would be a pick hard to argue with from both older and 30-year-old country music fans.
Brandy Clark – A well-respected songwriter and performer who bridges the gap between contemporary and classic country. She would also be the Opry’s first openly gay member if inducted, so there’s that.
Kellie Pickler – Another solid pick who you know would keep to her obligations, and still has a bit of star power with the new generations, and has won respect with much of the older crowd.
Chris Stapleton – He’s the hottest star in country right now, and fits on the Opry stage better than anyone.
Legends in the Making
Gene Watson – He seems like a darn near perfect candidate for the Opry, and is one of those oft-overlooked country stars who has contributed immeasurably to the genre. He’s still putting out records and playing shows, and is one of those artists who would take his obligations to the Opry seriously. He’s even mentioned on the Opry’s website as a “guest artist,” but has never been inducted.
Jim Lauderdale – Try finding a more respected name in Nashville, whether you’re looking for a songwiter, singer, or just an all around good guy. Like Old Crow Medicine Show, it would be a pick that would instill the Opry with some new blood, but old sound, and give a little bit of representation to the Americana side of country. There is also a Facebook Group trying to make Jim an Opry member.
Rhonda Vincent – Rhonda has quietly morphed into a force of nature in the bluegrass world, and has the performance acumen that is perfect for the Opry stage on a regular basis.
Rosanne Cash – Another name that’s surprisingly not a member, but would make a perfect addition, and one that would add a legendary bloodline back to the institution.
Mark Chesnutt, Daryle Singletary, Rodney Crowell, and Radney Foster are also interesting names.
Newer Artists
Elizabeth Cook – She used to be the Opry’s ultimate fill-in artist, and in previous years, played the Opry almost as much as anyone. Her performances numbers have lightened up some, but she would still make a solid pick.
Mo Pitney and William Michael Morgan – Two promising major label stars with traditional country leanings who live in the Nashville area. Both have played the opry a few times, and would be good picks for the institution’s future.
Chris Janson – Yes, the “Buy Me A Boat” guy. Janson made 26 appearances at the Opry last year—more than any other non member, and beyond “Buy Me A Boat,” he has some songs that are not half bad. He probably should still pay some more dues before he’s given the distinction above others, but he’s a name to watch out for.
EmiSunshine – She’s become a regular at the Opry in recent years, and would make an interesting pick despite her young age (she was born in 2004).
Holly Williams – The 3rd generation Williams also makes regular performances at the Opry (10 in 2015), and could be a way for the institution to renew its relationship with one of the most famous names in country, and one of the most famous names of the Opry. The Opry wouldn’t be the institution it is today without her grandfather.
Musicians
Sam Bush, Chris Scruggs, and “Cousin” Kenny Vaughan are all regulars on the Opry stage, and would make solid editions to the membership lineup.

I know the wraith I will get, but I think Eric Church would be great.
April 29, 2016 @ 4:03 pm
People need to re-evaluate their opinions of Eric Church. Just read his lyrics and you’ll see there’s more to him than artists like Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, etc.
April 28, 2016 @ 8:47 am
My vote goes to Holly Or Moe, but it sure would be nice to see some red dirt on the stage. Can we start a petition for Mike and the Moonpies?
April 28, 2016 @ 9:01 am
There are lots of great Red Dirt and Texas country acts that would work as Opry members, but I’m worried they wouldn’t be able to commit to the amount of performances necessary. It’s just a guess, but I think one of the reasons were seeing a delay from the Opry picking a new member is because they want a name that will draw attention, but one that will also keep up their end of the bargain. I think living in Nashville would help that. Historically, most Opry members were also Nashville residents, or nearby.
April 28, 2016 @ 8:54 am
Considering that Gary Allan lives in the area I think he would be an interesting choice.
April 29, 2016 @ 11:26 am
That would be awesome! I love Gary Allan. He’s amazing.
April 28, 2016 @ 8:58 am
Ray Stevens please!
April 28, 2016 @ 7:20 pm
He could be the new Jimmy Dickens! He’s hilarious!
May 12, 2016 @ 8:57 am
I love Ray Stevens. I was introduced to him at a young age through my grandparents and older cousin. He’s hilarious.
April 28, 2016 @ 9:09 am
Eric Church always plays a memorable show each time he’s at the Opry. His appearances have decreased over the years, but I’ve never seen the crowd react to an artist the way they do when Eric takes the stage. Even if you go back and look at early 2007 performances, he was all about the deep tracks and not his singles that were on radio.
Tracy Lawrence would be another good fit.He has a big catalog of hits and is still drawing major crowds. Daryle Singletary is an absolute perfect fit…..I listened to a bunch of interviews last summer when his latest album was set for release and man, he loves country music more than almost anybody.
Dustin Lynch is another person I root for….especially when he’s showcasing a more traditional side. He’s played the Opry over 20 times and has appeared quarterly since his debut in 2012. He often does an acoustic portion that always impresses and wins the crowd over. Another thing that impresses me is that Dustin and his entire band almost always dress up for their Opry appearances. No t-shirts and ball caps, it’s button downs + suits. He respects the Opry and has so much knowledge when it comes to country music history.
April 28, 2016 @ 9:10 am
Elizabeth Cook, goddammit! Jim Lauderdale, too.
April 28, 2016 @ 9:19 am
I had no idea there were so few Opry members, that really surprised me.
April 28, 2016 @ 9:32 pm
Actually, I doubt if Opry Member Randy Travis will be able to perform any more.. (Which made me kind of tear up as I typed it).
April 28, 2016 @ 9:52 am
Gene Watson, please. Always been a big fan. I have only been to the Opry once, it was a slow night, I think Boxcar Willie and Ray Price were the big names that night. It was mid eighties, and my parents just came to town to see me at Ft Campbell. Dad was taking pictures all night, only to find out later the lens cover was still on. I still laugh about that.
April 28, 2016 @ 10:09 am
This is a no brainer. Emisunshine is absolutely commited to great music. She is willing and able. How boutcha’ Grand Ole Opry?
April 28, 2017 @ 12:07 pm
You are right!! Emi’s goal in life was to play at the Grand Ole Opry and before she turns 13 she’s already been there 14 times! I can’t think of anyone that would take the obligation more seriously than she would. She loves the Opry as much as her fans love her. She is so talented both as a singer and songwriter and she’s going to be around for a long time. She deserves to be a member!
April 28, 2016 @ 10:19 am
I may be off base here, but I’d love to see Jason Isbell become a member. I know he isn’t traditionsl country, but he’s more country than say, Darius Rucker. He is a proven record seller, has sold out the Ryman several times now, and I would argue he is the type of artist the Opry needs to start showcasing as we look for at the country scene these days. Of course Miranda or Stapleton are great choices, or Gene Watson, which I love.
I’ve made the argument in the past that the Opry needs to shy away from current radio country artists and seek out Americana, or indie artists. Isbell would be a great start.
April 28, 2016 @ 1:04 pm
While not a member, I know Isbell has been featured on the Opry at least once.
He seemed to make a good impression.
April 28, 2016 @ 10:28 am
Stapleton is a good choice as is Eric Church…
April 28, 2016 @ 10:34 am
Leon Russell – The Master of Space and Time has been recording and performing real country music for 6 decades.
April 28, 2016 @ 10:46 am
Emi Sunshine wins my vote we all need to support this young girl she is so talented and we need this in our crazy world
May 1, 2016 @ 5:38 am
How right you are! â¤ï¸ The only trips we’ve made to GOO were to see EmiSunshine perform. Approaching 500,000 FB followers, imagine the refreshing new blood she’ll bring into your live audience.
April 28, 2016 @ 10:51 am
My vote is for Emisunshine as well. A true future Legend. I believe she is one of very few artist that has that true mountain sound. A gift that reminds me of Dolly, Loretta, or Patty Loveless. Her family are amazing folks too. I say if you are talking about saving country music, a no brainer would be her and the younger generation.
April 28, 2016 @ 10:52 am
I’m going to jump on the Church bandwagon as well. He takes the Opry seriously and always brings his A game. Plus, as much as I’d love to see another legend, the Opry needs mainstream artists who actually take it seriously to remain viable. This seems like a great pairing to me. Besides that, Kacey or Holly would be awesome.
Let’s be real though, not one more member should ever be inducted until Hank is reinstated. They could have a big throwdown and have Hank Jr, Hank III, and Holly sing his songs. It would be the must see show of the year.
April 28, 2016 @ 12:11 pm
Second this motion.
All in favor?
April 28, 2016 @ 1:31 pm
“They could have a big throwdown and have Hank Jr, Hank III, and Holly sing his songs. It would be the must see show of the year.”
That basically already happened. In 2003, The Opry held a big event honoring the 50th anniversary of Hank’s passing with Hank Jr., Hank 3, and Jett Williams involved. Holly and Hillary even made an appearance on the Midnight Jamboree.
http://www.cmt.com/news/1459362/hank-jrs-opry-appearance-extends-family-traditions/
Here’s some footage. They even let Hank 3 sing a track from what would later become the Straight to Hell record.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaMCi-V9FR0
This is part of why I personally don’t really buy the idea that the Opry has never honored Hank Sr. Not that more tribute shows along such lines wouldn’t be great.
And, obviously this was before Hank 3 publicly took a whiz on the Opry via song.
April 29, 2016 @ 7:03 am
Tributes are all well and good, but it’s time to reinstate the man. What the Opry has done is akin to the R&R HOF not having Elvis as a member. And it’s long past due.
April 29, 2016 @ 12:36 pm
I hadn’t heard about this before… this is very cool, but I still gotta side with Coop. I think a formal reinstatement would go a long way. It ends confusion, honors a legend, and mends fences with the Williams family.
I had hoped “I Walk The Line” would win an Oscar or something and get Hank’s name back in the forefront to allow something like this to happen, but alas it couldn’t be.
Between the Opry, illnesses and addiction, Audrey, dying young, family drama, and the movie disaster, has any one artist ever stayed relevant with as much adversity? Really speaks to the power of his music that despite all the missteps in his career, he is still the greatest.
April 29, 2016 @ 1:29 pm
And wow, I called “I Saw The Light” by the Cash biopic name instead. Shows how forgettable it must have been. (Still haven’t watched yet, but based on the reviews I went from excitement to dread)
April 28, 2016 @ 10:53 am
WILL HOGE
April 28, 2016 @ 2:28 pm
Will Hoge is an excellent choice for a member
April 28, 2016 @ 10:57 am
Sara Evans would be a good candidate. And Joe Nichols also.
April 28, 2016 @ 11:00 am
I know he’s still very early in his career, but down the road it would be great to see Jon Pardi become an Opry member.
It would also be awesome to see the Turnpike Troubadours become members (although I just have this feeling that they wouldn’t be interested at all, but I could be wrong).
But out of the artists that you named off under “Current Artists”, I think Kacey Musgraves and Jamey Johnson would be great inductees, and even Miranda Lambert would be great (I better not say that too loud before I piss someone off).
Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it.
April 28, 2016 @ 11:27 am
neither Kacey nor Miranda deserve to be Opry members.
May 12, 2016 @ 8:58 am
Jon Pardi is fantastic. In a few years, he’d be a great candidate for Opry membership.
April 28, 2016 @ 11:03 am
Neither Miranda nor Kacey belong within a light-year of the Grand Ole Opry, unless Miranda’s Pistol Annies work makes up for rehashing the same dumb “I’m an angry woman listen to me psychotically rant about my pathetic problems” song over and over again, and then taking a break with the melodically jagged and unappetizing “Automatic” and Kacey is all about agenda and using her legs to make up for an obvious lack of talent.
William Michael Morgan and Rhonda Vincent are both excellent choices, they are artists with integrity, modesty, and a sense of respect for the genre and what makes Country Music one-of-a-kind, and they have deep material, with strong messages and both are great performers.
Chris Stapleton being a part of the Opry is one of those things that… just seems… meh… He’s done so much without the aid of an institution, and he’s become such a superstar on his own merits alone (say what you will about Timberlake, but Sam Hunt wouldn’t have been able to keep up this kind of momentum for so long after performing with him) that making him an Opry member just seems moot. If Opry memberships were a more substantial thing, like a HoF induction, and only the best artists got it, it would be great, but an Opry membership is practically worthless by comparison, since so many great artists are not members and shitty artists like Blake Shelton are, so it doesn’t really benefit Stapleton, or even fit with his career arc.
Kellie Pickler is a punchline at this point, she’s one of those artists who never goes away, despite never actually accomplishing anything. She’s like the Band Perry, unsuccessful but somehow impossible to get rid of, like a bad rash, and she has no place in the Opry either, that distinction should go to more talented artists with more material results under their belt.
Neither one of these artists should be Opry members, we need people with substance, character, and a respect not only for how Country Music sounds but the types of people and lifestyles about whom it is written and for whom it exists.
The person I think is the hardest choice to argue is Jamey Johnson, he’s taking his victory laps now as a traditionalist, he’s still got some star power to throw around, and it could rejuvenate his stagnate career to the heights he should have always been.
He would benefit the most from an Opry membership, and would contribute more than just about anybody, with his arsenal of classic tunes and a near incomparable roster of his own material, he’s got the best stuff to bring with him and they’ve got the relevance and the exposure to really turn his career back around.
What do you think?
April 28, 2016 @ 12:19 pm
I think you’re being pretty harsh on Miranda, Kacey, and Kellie, and this is from someone who has written a fair amount of criticism about all three. Neith of them would probablt be my first choice, but I was trying to be pragmatic and realistic when putting this list together, and I think all three of them would be considered highly, including Pickler for some of the very reasons you cited.
I do think Jamey could benefit greatly by an Opry induction, but the big question is, who will the Opry benefit from? That’s the question they will ask, and what will probably govern the ultimate decision.
April 28, 2016 @ 4:29 pm
I prefer to think of myself as being realistic. none of the three have anything that resembles the kind of substance that Jamey Johnson or Chris Stapleton’s material has, by comparison all three are just fluffy pop stars.
Also, their image is in no way proper for a place like the Opry. I think both Miranda and Kacey need to model a bit more after Loretta Lynn, and not be quite so revealing with their dress. I don’t know about Kellie Pickler because I have no idea what she looks like.
The Opry will NOT benefit from Miranda, because she brings nothing of value. As I said, angry woman songs that don’t have a point… They will NOT benefit from Kacey, because let’s face it she isn’t very good. “Biscuits” was a bit less disturbing than “follow your arrow” but the songwriting was still mediocre, and “Follow your arrow” is an agenda song, and agenda songs do not belong on stages like the Opry. If Hank JR. and Kacey want to spout their opinions that’s great, do it at their owns shows and not at the Opry, that goes for “Follow your Arrow” and “God and Guns” and Charlie Daniels’ “This Ain’t no Rag.”
Keep the Opry neutral!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 29, 2016 @ 6:34 am
Don’t go slogging on Charlie Daniels. Or his songs. Nothing good down that road…
April 28, 2016 @ 11:44 am
George Strait, Harry Luge, Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Rogers, and Hank Jr will be good for the Opry. and all of those you listed above Trig.
April 28, 2016 @ 3:29 pm
Hank Jr will tell the Opry to screw off, and Kenny Rogers does not strike me as “traditional”. I love his music, but its not really Opry worthy. If he’s inducted, then why not Barry Gibb? He wrote Kenny Rogers’ best selling album, which was basically Bee Gees by Kenny Rogers. BTW: Bee Gees wanted to be R&B, not country.
I could see Stapleton, but I think he’d say the same as Hank Jr. Kacey could stand to be more ladylike before she actually is inducted.
I don’t see Mrianda, either. I could see Gene Watson, Don Williams, if he’s not, already. Maybe Jamey. Joe Nichols maybe, but he’s not really traditional, either. He ranks up there with Blake in that regard. Kristen Kristofferson, I could definitely see.
April 28, 2016 @ 6:10 pm
You could throw out Kenny Rogers’ “Bee Gees” album and any other pop oriented album you’d care to throw out and he’d STILL have a ton of country hits–most of which did not make the pop chart.
April 28, 2016 @ 7:09 pm
You have a point, but if you want more traditional artists, then I don’t see Kenny Rogers in the Opry. Tracy Lawrence would be an awesome addition, however. Kenny Rogers, IMHO was more pop oriented, even though he was country.
April 28, 2016 @ 11:49 am
Lee Ann Womack, Rosanna Cash, Miranda, Musgraves or Holly Williams would be great additions. What if they inducted 2 women this year (older and younger generation)? Would the walls fall down? I think that we desperately NEED female energy in the Opry. Carrie Underwood in 2008 is the last (not counting LBT) so we are rounding almost a decade since that has happened.
April 28, 2016 @ 12:15 pm
I didn’t put my candidates together considering gender at all, but I think if you look at who would be the most qualified and capable, it’s mostly women at the moment.
April 28, 2016 @ 12:01 pm
I’m going to go with Miranda, Kacey, or Kellie.
April 28, 2016 @ 12:08 pm
I’m rooting for Maddie & Tae, Kacey Musgraves, Jon Pardi, William Michael Morgan, Mo Pitney and Chris Stapleton. Oh yeah, and Florida Georgia Line obviously!
April 28, 2016 @ 5:34 pm
I hope the first and the last ones were sarcastic.
April 28, 2016 @ 11:26 pm
Florida Georgia Line is putrid garbage, i was sarcastic on them.
Maddie & Tae are actually helping country music: you can say what you want but it’s undeniable that songs like After The Storm Blows Through, Sierra or Downside of Growing Up don’t sound country. Moreover they have something to say and they care about albums as an art form. They don’t sound like Waylon, that’s for sure, but they sound like a cross between The Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson and old Tim McGraw and I think we should all appreciate their love for neotraditionak country music.
April 29, 2016 @ 5:13 am
Maddie and Tae are not helping Country Music. It’s a marketing scheme that makes people think they’re helping Country Music, when in actuality it’s a farce.
They’re signed to the same label that produced FGL and Thomas Rhett… and they played their protest song in front of Scott Borchetta… just let that sink in… Their “protest song” isn’t protesting anything because it was backed by the mastermind of the very things it is supposed to protest, but people are fooled into believing that Maddie and Tae are fighting for Country Music. and so they buy Maddie and Tae albums, and every time people buy Maddie and Tae albums, Scott Borchetta takes his percentage and uses it to produce another FGL…
See why Maddie and Tae are part of the problem? because their album sales are funding the Country Music AntiChrist, and he’s the one producing their music.
April 29, 2016 @ 5:18 am
your theory is quite stupid. William Michael Morgan is a Warner Bros artist, just like teen pop duo Dan and Shay.
Josh Turner and George Strait are on MCA records, which is also Sam Hunt’s label.
But I will still be buying George, Josh and William’s music, as well as Maddie & Tae’s, because these kind of conspiratory theories are nothing but a pile of crap: If I want to hear a fiddle and some quality lyrics, that’s what I will be buying.
April 29, 2016 @ 7:22 am
If you’re using Kacey Musgraves as a measurement for quality music you might as well use Kanye West or Lil Wayne as standards for quality music. Kacey Musgraves is one of the most overrated performers in history, and her songwriting is bland, flat, and one-dimensional. I mean come on, “Biscuits.” People only like her because four years of Luke Bryan have dulled their senses and by comparison she actually sounds good.
You want good Country Music by a woman? go buy a Jean Shepard or Dottie West album.
Kacey Musgraves and Luke Bryan on the same label is fitting, because they have about the same amount of talent. Kacey will do or say anything to make people pay attention because without the publicity people will ignore her and she’d have to go back to having a real job. That’s why she dresses the way she does, because her music isn’t good enough to speak for itself.
Alan Jackson has always been “Pop Country,” but unlike Maddie and Tae, whose protest song was funded by, and promoted by the very entity it protested, Jackson defied the establishment with that whole “Choices” thing, and again with the drummer not holding his sticks.
If you can’t see the difference between a protest that is orchestrated by the establishment (Maddie and Tae) and somebody flipping off the establishment (Jackson) then of course you would buy into the Maddie and Tae farce.
I do care about the music, that’s why I’m careful where I spend my money, because as much as I might like an artist, I like Country Music more. and because I like Country Music, I don’t buy albums if I think my money might be spent eroding my genre.
That’s why I don’t my albums from Maddie and Tae, that’s one of the reasons I don’t buy albums from Kacey Musgraves, because every time Kacey sells an album, the label takes a cut, and then they fund Luke Bryan.
I take Country Music far too seriously to want to see it eroded by people who don’t respect it, and by people who think I can be fooled by marketing shams.
It’s not an anti bro-“Country” song if it was funded by the chief orchestrator of the Bro”Country” movement. that’s just dumb.
April 29, 2016 @ 6:19 am
George Strait has not publicly said anything negative about Sam Hunt. Neither has W.M.M. If they did, and remained signed to the same label, THEN it would be a problem, because THEN they would be hypocrites. Likewise, Sam Hunt has never said “Country has to evolve.”
Big Machine is the primary contributor to attacks on Country Music’s identity…
Feel free to buy their albums, but be aware that you are funding the destruction of Country Music every time you make a purchase.
April 29, 2016 @ 6:30 am
your comments are laughable. Kacey Musgraves has usually complained about garbage played on country radio, yet she’s on UMG (guess what, same label behind Luke Bryan). Alan Jackson did complain as well and he has had to duet with that Cole Swindell bastard. You should stop thinking about these conspiracies and start caring about the music. I don’t want to hear idiotic arguments, I judge music for what I hear, and when I hear a song against bro country I stand by it. Maddie & Tae’s opinions and their public statements are no way contraddictory to their music.
April 29, 2016 @ 9:37 am
A couple of things Fuzzy:
1) “Girl in a Country Song” was released nearly two years ago. Okay, so you think it’s all marketing. We get it. I thought similarly at the time, and still do to some extent. But that shouldn’t override every single piece of music they release subsequently.
2) Just because someone is on the same label as someone else doesn’t mean it’s a ringing endorsement. So is George Strait supposed to trash Sam Hunt, or vice versa just because you think they’re supposed to? These are professionals. I doubt George Strait cares either way about Sam Hunt. He’s worried about putting on his next show, and releasing his next album wile also trying to enjoy some level of retirement.
April 29, 2016 @ 12:26 pm
ok so you have no idea what the hell you’re talking about if you say Kacey Musgraves is as talented as Luke butt-shaker Bryan. Hell dude have you ever heard High Time? It’s a stellar track that brings me back to 60’s country. “Dime Store Cowgirl” is a masterpiece. “Fine” is one of the best songs I ever heard last year and you say Kacey is as talented as Luke Bryan (whose best effort was a writing credit on Billy Currington’s Good Directions)??? Come on, just stop embarassing yourself!
April 28, 2016 @ 12:17 pm
George Strait (does not want to be an Opry member or was never invited for some dumb reason), I like Watson, Johnson, Church, Womack, Jim Lauderdale, and Whitey Fucking Morgan would be at the top of my list.
April 28, 2016 @ 1:11 pm
George has been offered Opry membership + the chance to perform on numerous occasions, but being in Texas, he declined.
April 28, 2016 @ 12:26 pm
Gene Watson is just a great country singer, with a long string of hits. He would be a great addition. And his duets with Rhonda Vincent are great too. Neither would be a big draw for young audiences, but they would be big hits with traditionalists.
Someone mentioned Tracy Lawrence. Can’t believe he isn’t a member of the Opry. He deserves to be.
April 28, 2016 @ 7:19 pm
I can’t believe Montgomery Gentry was inducted before Tracy, or Blake, for that matter, and yes, Hank needs to be reinstated! Some of the current members did worse things than he did, and they were not thrown out! Tracy even had his issues years ago, but he straightened out, and I know there are plenty of others. Hank simply died before he had a chance to redeem himself.
April 28, 2016 @ 12:36 pm
I vote for Jamey Johnson or Mo Pitney. But, I also think it is a shame that Gene Watson and Jim Lauderdale haven’t been invited. The Opry has invited too many in recent years who do not represent what I feel is true country music.
April 28, 2016 @ 12:39 pm

April 28, 2016 @ 12:45 pm
My vote goes to Lindi Ortega. Nashville resident, cutting edge yet definitely nods to the traditional. She would make a fantastic addition to a seemingly stale set of newer inductees (OCMS aside, of course).
April 28, 2016 @ 1:27 pm
Love to see emisunshine become the next opry member
April 28, 2016 @ 1:30 pm
Love to see emisunshine become the next opry member she will be there every time the opry wants her
April 28, 2016 @ 5:14 pm
Emi Sunshine would be there every single time that she is supposed to be. More if allowed to. Emi is Opry worthy through and through.
April 28, 2016 @ 1:32 pm
Jim Lauderdale deserves it! And Gene Watson too!
April 28, 2016 @ 2:00 pm
Gene Watson is a great choice. How about T. Graham Brown? He’s a guest artist, but knock’s ’em dead with Wine into Water.
April 28, 2016 @ 3:27 pm
T Graham Brown is a good name for consideration.
April 28, 2016 @ 6:14 pm
How is his health? Seriously. I see some Youtube videos where he looks OK and some where he looks like 400 pounds and completely unkempt. I don’t know which are the most recent. He’s a great singer, though more r&b than country.
April 28, 2016 @ 6:32 pm
I think he’s doing pretty good, at least the last few photos and videos I’ve seen of him. I remember him on the Grammy red carpet two years ago, and he was cracking jokes and looking spry.
April 28, 2016 @ 2:13 pm
my vote has to be jamey johnson (can’t believe he’s not inducted yet) if it has to be someone current than mo pitney or kacey musgraves
April 28, 2016 @ 2:14 pm
Daryle Singletary would be a good choice, as would Gene Watson. I’m surprised Miranda Lambert isn’t already a member given her star power. What about Ashley Monroe? I think she’d be a good pick and would take it seriously.
April 28, 2016 @ 3:27 pm
Ashley Monroe is another good name.
April 28, 2016 @ 7:27 pm
I guess you’ve never hear “Weed, Instead of Roses”. The traditional Opry fans would have a fit!
April 28, 2016 @ 2:35 pm
Gene Watson is the person with the most tenure and he still puts on a good show. He was as good last year when I saw him as in the eighties.
April 28, 2016 @ 3:00 pm
Gene Watson is the right person. he has more hits then a lot of them ever will have .
April 28, 2016 @ 3:06 pm
I took a backstage tour of the Opry house a couple weeks ago, and was suprised to Hank Williams’ name on the wall with all of the members. I asked the tour guide why he was up there, since he had been banned, and all she said was, “Once you’re a member, you’re always a member.” When I said, ‘Yeah, but he was banned,’ all she said was “Once you’re a member, you’re always a member.” It was obvious she was trying to skirt my question of why is he on the wall of members, so I didn’t push the issue, but I found it kind of odd. Any thoughts?
April 28, 2016 @ 3:12 pm
Wayne Hancock.
Elizabeth Cook should be a member already also.
April 28, 2016 @ 3:12 pm
Gene Watson . Period . IF he’d even want to be a member of the same ‘club’ as Rascal Flatts and Daruis Rucker …WTF ???????
April 28, 2016 @ 3:55 pm
Please consider Reagan Boggs from Bristol TN/Va. You don’t know what your missing. Just released her 4th studio album this one w/The Coal Men. “Empty Glasses” is the current album released April 12th. for radio. Her album Quicksand hit Americana radio last year at 36 and stayed there for 20 weeks! She sang on the Opry when she was just a young girl. Best singer/songwriter I know!
April 28, 2016 @ 4:17 pm
Dear Trigger:
I recommend you about Harry Luge he will be in Nashville next week. He would be a good fit at the opry if invited. He sounds like Chris Stapleton in a way.
April 28, 2016 @ 4:18 pm
Without a doubt, Gene!!
April 28, 2016 @ 5:03 pm
My choice would be Emi Sunshine. She is the epitome, heart and soul of Traditional Country Music that the GRAND OLE OPRY was founded on. Who cares about age. In the original music that Emi Sunshine writes she has the depth, wisdom and emotion of an old soul well beyond her years.
April 30, 2016 @ 7:37 am
She has original songs?? I’d love to hear one. Only thing I’ve ever seen her do are covers of the old classics… Although, most of the so called “country fans” these days have probably never heard those classic songs so it might be nice to have someone giving them exposure again! Nothing against Emi… I think she’s great. Just waiting to hear something original that stands out as much as her stage presence
April 28, 2016 @ 5:18 pm
All I know is there are real reasons behind why there are no new members. It’s been going downhill for the past decade because there was a strong desire for those of us who have dedicated our lives to COUNTRY music and that has for the most part been reduced to who cares what they do if they want to join, toss COUNTRY out the back door and bring on the….well, whatever this is they call country today.
Many of us wanted to play the opry from the time we were old enough to listen to Hank Sr. But when we got into the professional end of the business, things had changed, we were too COUNTRY and we were too OUTLAW and that is what we were told. So those who once considered it a high honor, now don’t consider it at all.
So I suppose they can pick whomever they want, any of the acts who seem to be wanting to use it as part of their ladder up to where ever it is they think they’re going. But they won’t join with any HONOR as most of us would have had they not told us, they didn’t like our crowd of associates around the 70’s – 80’s. We just wasn’t good enough because we tended to enjoy ourselves a little too much and they thought we’d give the opry a bad name….. well, looks like they should have no problem filling their spots since most of us left it alone. Good luck with that.
April 28, 2016 @ 5:32 pm
Gene Watson, Joe Nichols, Sara Evans, Chely Wright, Rodney Crowell, LeeAnn Womack, Mac Davis, Ashley Monroe, Tracy Lawrence
April 28, 2016 @ 5:37 pm
How about Hank Williams Sr.?
April 28, 2016 @ 5:56 pm
Darryl Worley plays quite a few shows there every year. I’d put his name in for consideration, as well as Tracy Lawrence and Mark Chesnutt. Gene Watson, definitely!
April 28, 2016 @ 6:04 pm
Kacey Musgraves or Ashley Monroe, for sure. It’s past time for these girls to get inducted into the Opry, they are both fantastic. Miranda wouldn’t be a bad choice, either.
April 28, 2016 @ 6:21 pm
My vote would be for Emi Sunshine and the Rain (her family Band). Not only is Emi talented, but it would be a two way honor to include her. This kid’s got something special.
April 28, 2016 @ 6:29 pm
Some others whom I don’t believe have been mentions yet: Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Buddy Miller, The Steel Drivers and athe Gibson Brothers.
April 28, 2016 @ 6:32 pm
Some others: Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Buddy Miller, The Steel Drivers, and The Gibson Brothers.
April 28, 2016 @ 6:41 pm
How about Sturgill Simpson, Randy Rogers Band, Marty Haggard, Hank 3 (He don’t think he gives a damn), and or Rankin Brothers.
April 28, 2016 @ 6:46 pm
I would love to see Scotty McCreery join. He sings traditional country there. His cover of Mama Tried just got posted a couple of days ago and it already has more than 100,000 views. The Opry video of Hello Darlin has more than 4,000,000 views.
April 28, 2016 @ 7:02 pm
I think Scotty McCreery would be an excellent choice He performs at the Opry every chance he gets and says that’s his favorite place to perform sings traditional country music He has my vote
April 28, 2016 @ 7:26 pm
Kasey Musgraves and Chris Stapleton would be perfect choices.
April 28, 2016 @ 7:27 pm
I agree with Mary H—Scotty McCreery would be an outstanding choice!! He appears at the Opry often and has great respect for the character and history of country music. He reveres the older generation of artists—does amazing covers of classic songs, like Mama Tried and Hello Darlin.” I know that people make special trips to the Opry when Scotty performs—many people come from hours and hours away just to see him. The audiences love him, and his performances totally captivate. I was there when he did George Jones’ The Grand Tour, and the audience was completely mesmerized—you could have heard a pin drop!
He respects the Opry so much that making all the necessary appearances would be a privilege, not an aggravation as it is to some! He doesn’t live in Nashville YET, but he can be there in an hour flying from Raleigh. He is there so often already on business and for performances.
He has so many faithful fans who just adore him, and they would be “forever fans” of the Opry as well with Scotty as a member. He is the kind of responsible, upstanding, classy, amazingly talented young singer/songwriter that would be a wonderful addition to the Opry.
April 28, 2016 @ 7:34 pm
Dale Watson if he’d do it. Gene Watson for sure!
April 28, 2016 @ 7:50 pm
Scotty McCreery would be such a wonderful addition to the Grand Ol Opry! He loves traditional country music and has an extremely large fan base which includes men and women of all ages. His beautiful baritone voice is captivating and his incredibly giving nature is undeniable. I hope sometime in the near future he will be invited to become a member!
April 28, 2016 @ 7:57 pm
It would be nice to see some younger members, my picks would be Kellie Pickler and Scotty McCreery. There is no denying they both have classic country voices and both have star power and lots of fans. I haven’t seen Kellie in concert but Scotty does a classic country medley in his concert shows that is a big hit and gets great reaction from young and old. His covers he has done at the opry of Hello Darlin’, The Grand Tour, The Dance and a few weeks ago Mama Tried are approaching 10 million views combined. His recording of Carolina Moon on his last album is outstanding, pure poetry. New music being previewed in concert is personal, heartfelt and moving.
April 28, 2016 @ 7:58 pm
Gene and Dale Watson. Stapleton deserves it more than any other new artist.
April 28, 2016 @ 8:07 pm
Scotty McCreery would be a great addition to the Opry family. He is truly an “old soul” with a love for the traditional country music. Singing classics on the Opry always brings rave reviews for Scotty. His covers of Merle, Conway, and Jones are great examples of his traditional sound.
April 28, 2016 @ 8:10 pm
I love the idea of Emi Sunshine and she writes songs too. What about the Willis Clan.
April 28, 2016 @ 8:37 pm
I think Emi Sunshine would be a great next member. A talent like hers…. Vocal, ukelele, humor, timing, song writing and sparkle exist in this little 11 year old who works harder than 3 people twice her age. She is a fireball on the stage. She can wring more emotion out of a ballad or her favorite “killin songs” than almost anyone.
April 28, 2016 @ 8:37 pm
I would love to see Emi Sunshine and her band The Rain
She’s an amazing and very talented artist, who has written most of her music with her mother. She’s an awesome old soul to true country music and her own style.
She’s going to be big!
April 28, 2016 @ 9:16 pm
I am surprised that Kellie Pickler hasn’t been invited yet. Her last two albums are awesome, and she loves traditional country music.
In 2013 when she won Dancing With The Stars, the Opry threw a party for her backstage. They also launched the artist-curated home goods collection, Selma Drye, inspired by her song of the same name.
What are they waiting for? I mean, who doesn’t love Kellie Pickler? Maybe someone in management doesn’t like her husband or something. (songwriter Kyle Jacobs) But that idea doesn’t make any sense either.
April 28, 2016 @ 9:30 pm
The Opry needs to invite the SWEET TEA TRIO TO PREFORM
They are three very talented, BEAUTIFUL young women. They have awesome harmonies and great country sounding music. In fact the lead singer Kate Falcon sang on the Opry stage with the awesome Martina Mcbride on September 28, 2012 or 2013. I don’t have that information in front of me right now. Sweet tea has videos on YouTube and also sis country Nation website and of course the sweettea.com website anyone reading this check them out I’m sure you will love them and like I said the Opry really needs to invite them to come perform I’m sure the crowd, I’m definitely sure the crowd will enjoy them thanks and I hope the right person reads this.
Thank you
April 28, 2016 @ 11:43 pm
EniSunshine should be the next Member to be inducted to the Grand Ole Opry. Because she has been there 13 times. She is a Rising Legend! Her family has their own Studio. Emi would definately pay her dues.I know this for a fact.I worked with her mom,i knew them before Emi was born.I was pregnant with my 2nd son and she was pregnant with Emilie Sunshine Hamilton.I know the way they are, they are trust worthy.I am her #1 Fan.I am not one of her Sunshiner Fans But I have a Facebook Page to get her voice heard. I will continue to support until the good Lord calls me home. She stays true to her Roots. She keeps old time country music the same as it use to be.She does not add hip hop to her music. That is also what I Love about her. Because becoming a Grand Ole Opry Member would make the older generations proud of what they did on stage. And proud of Emi. Anyway, the point is,I can not explain enough about her on here.I could right a book about her. Please for us Emisunshine Fans Induct her to The Grand Ole Opry.Thank You! In my whole life I have never seen anyone like Emi.
April 29, 2016 @ 12:08 am
EmiSunshine, is the one I’m watching.
April 29, 2016 @ 1:31 am
Trigger, here’s Bobby Bones on the Opry yesterday. In case someone hasn’t mentioned it yet.
https://youtu.be/_CQQu6xKnFw
So when do we riot?
April 29, 2016 @ 5:18 am
I’m amazed that Suzy Bogguss has never become a member. She would fit the bill perfectly.
April 29, 2016 @ 6:18 am
I think the opry should add members that intend to honor their obligation to perform. I could not believe that Gene Watson has not been added. Some of the newer artist such as MO Piney and Teea Goins would be excellent choices. And, what an addition Ben Haggard would be for the opry. Finally, add Hank Sr.
April 29, 2016 @ 6:32 am
Emi
April 29, 2016 @ 7:03 am
Emi Sunshine. Powerhouse voice 100% traditional country. She is a already a HUGE draw – a cute and uber-talented 12 year old young lady that would be a ticket draw to the show for a LIFETIME. She would grow up on the Opry stage being mentored by Marty Stuart. She would ALWAYS keep her commitment.
The others are very worthy but this pick would be marketing genius and a warm fuzzy all around for fans, organization and performer alike.
April 29, 2016 @ 7:16 am
I see some names mentioned that would make good choices, some not. I am one of many who think Scotty McCreery is the PERFECT addition to the Opry right now. He is a young artist with an old country soul. He clearly loves and respects the classic songs and the classic artists. He loves and respects the Opry. He has amazing talent and when he sings the classics people sure pay attention. Scotty would be a plus for the Opry as the Opry would be a plus for him.
April 29, 2016 @ 7:20 am
Holy flood of comments by McCreery and Emi Sunshine fans. Good lord. How many of y’all are the same person?
April 29, 2016 @ 7:23 am
LOL! Speaking strictly for Scotty fans – we are definitely different people from many different areas of the US. Many of the Scotty fans have attended the OPRY multiple times when Scotty was appearing.
April 29, 2016 @ 1:26 pm
This campaign for this kid is borderline disturbing. Is this her team or is someone sending them here? Let her be a kid, imo.
April 29, 2016 @ 1:44 pm
The comments for EmiSunshine, Scotty McCreery, and Gene Watson are coming from fans. I keep an eye out for multiple comments from the same IP addresses (that’s to our buddy Shooter Jennings and his stable of aliases years back), and have a pretty good nose when marketers start leaving comments here. They’re just fans showing their support for their favorite artists. Some may be under the impression it’s an up or down vote or something, but I sure didn’t tell them that.
April 29, 2016 @ 2:28 pm
Well now I feel bad. I sure hope my comment was not seen as disparaging her. It just seemed suspicious that a lot of her fan’s comments were speaking for her or her team.
Best of luck to her.
April 29, 2016 @ 4:05 pm
Not at all. I agree it’s curious why so many folks are coming here and leaving comments. I guess you would have to ask those fans. But I did leave the ending open ended, asking for people to leave their picks of who should be the next Opry inductee.
April 29, 2016 @ 7:55 am
T.G. Shepard should be inducted into the Opry, as well as Gene Watson
April 29, 2016 @ 8:33 am
Musgraves and/or Brandy Clark would be great additions! I’d also like to see the Opry acknowledge John Anderson and Lauderdale. Picking up another bluegrass act would a good move as well and my vote there goes to Larry Sparks, hands down.
May 1, 2016 @ 10:41 am
John Anderson is another great choice!
April 29, 2016 @ 10:35 am
Emisunshine represents all that was ever good about country music or ever will be…surrounded by devoted family and musicians, her appearances on the Opry have been electrifying. She has the biggest talent to come along in decades…a strong voice with interpretation, ability to write old soul lyrics, a dedication to country that is seldom seen. She is such a prodigy…nobody can touch her for a great performance. We will never tire of seeing her on any stage.
April 30, 2016 @ 10:27 pm
Likely late but Mark Chesnutt deserves it, growing up with country in the 90’s he was one of my favorites.
May 1, 2016 @ 5:44 am
It’s the great true country music artists and performers that established the prestigious and honorable value of the Grand Ole Opry. Opry may still retain the privilege to offer a place for new artists to shine, but its dignity will diminish without the distinguished artists being members. It’s hard to believe that the late Merle Haggard, amongst many other great artists, had not been a member of the Opry. Gene Watson is on top of the list of potential members, but doubtful if current rules and criteria would encourage the very best and busy artists to accept membership offers. In addition to “Guests”, it might be more appropriate to include such great artists in the category of “Honorary Members”. Without their appearances even as guests, the Ole Opry will not be Grand anymore.
May 1, 2016 @ 11:22 am
Gene Watson for one.Tanya Tucker & Rhonda Vincent should also be members. As should Lee Ann Womack.
May 1, 2016 @ 11:28 am
And Buddy Jewell would be another great Opry member.
May 1, 2016 @ 5:32 pm
Miranda, Ashley Monroe, heck all of the Pistol Annies would be great!
May 1, 2016 @ 10:13 pm
Thomas Rhett and Brett Eldredge are the best that country music has to offer!
May 2, 2016 @ 8:50 am
How about Daily and Vincent?
May 2, 2016 @ 10:29 am
Another good suggestion.
May 2, 2016 @ 9:39 pm
Don’t forget John Anderson and Sammy Kershaw. In case nobody’s mentioned them.
May 3, 2016 @ 6:51 am
David Frizzell & Margo Smith would also make great Opry members.
May 4, 2016 @ 9:57 pm
Zac Brown Band or Jaida Dreyer? They are both great and I’m surprised their names haven’t shown up yet.
Great list. Rodney Crowell or Jim Lauderdale would be excellent additions in character and merit.
The comments about Kenny Rogers are interesting. He was certainly a rock musician to start but to so many generations of music fans he represents the country image. The Gambler. Simply put he’s the dadgum Gambler.
Personally I feel Miranda would illuminate the scene with her strong personality. It comes through in her performances.
May 5, 2016 @ 11:01 am
Trampled By Turtles, Ashley Monroe, Lindi Ortega, Holly Williams, Miranda Lambert, Della Mae,
May 6, 2016 @ 12:29 pm
Lee Ann Womack
May 6, 2016 @ 4:41 pm
Emi Sunshine is one of the great young artists that together with the other young performers, will be the future of Country music. She has already been named the 2014 Rising Legend. She loves the Opry and lives in Tennessee.
May 7, 2016 @ 8:55 am
If they were to go with the regulars, it would be guys like, Mark Wills, Jimmy Wayne, the Grascals, Suzy bogguss, or Mand Barrnett, because those are the artists that actually play the Opry regularly, and that is who the Opry counts on to come in and perform, when the new members won’t do it, or can’t fit it in.
July 5, 2016 @ 7:53 pm
Wade Hayes – plays the Opry often and lives in Nashville. Had respect and reverence for REAL country.
January 1, 2017 @ 6:40 pm
Scotty McCreery Loves the Opry I would love to see him join this year.He has brought a lot of young people into country music that didn’t know what country music was that is a good thing.
March 9, 2017 @ 8:27 pm
Bradley Walker hands down! He is the real deal! Would be great to have him as a member!
August 22, 2018 @ 10:00 am
Jim Lauderdale, Elizabeth Cook, Jamey Johnson, Chris Stapleton.
October 27, 2018 @ 12:36 pm
Eric Church would be a great addition to the Grand Ole Opry.
October 30, 2018 @ 7:57 pm
How on earth is Gene Watson under your Legends In The Making heading? Gene has been around over 50 years, I think he has long past the Legend In A Making status and as Hank III says, “The Grand Ole Opry isn’t so grand anymore” for very reasons such as not having Gene as a member already…. Just my opinion.
March 15, 2019 @ 9:29 pm
The two greatest singers in the history of country music ( Suzy Bogguss, Mandy Barnett ) are not members. That fact says more about the Opry system then it does about the singers.
August 19, 2019 @ 4:23 pm
Sara Evans
