Promotion Pulled from “The Hunt” Movie Feat. Sturgill Simpson
Universal Pictures has pulled the marketing behind a new horror film called The Hunt which features Sturgill Simpson as a major cast member. Still set to be released on September 27th, and first announced on July 30th, the film and its promotion have stirred controversy over the last couple days due to both the political nature of its subject matter, and the two recent mass shootings in El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH causing some to criticize the promotion and plot of the movie as being insensitive and potentially incendiary.
UPDATE (8/10): Universal has now canceled the release of the film. “While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for ‘The Hunt,’ after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film,” a statement read from the company on Saturday.
Starring lead actors Hilary Swank, Emma Roberts, Ike Barinholtz, and Betty Gilpin, The Hunt is a movie about a group of “rich elites” who capture and then hunt down ordinary “deplorables” for sport. 12 strangers wake up in the middle of a field, not knowing each other, or how they got there, and soon find themselves as the hunted. Sturgill Simpson plays a character named “Kid Rock” from Orlando, Florida—one of the 12 being hunted down.
Though the release of the film’s trailer (see below) stirred little controversy at the time, numerous reports from conservative news outlets and others have criticized the plot of the film, which clearly draws political lines from its use of language such as “elite” and “deplorable.” A Fox News report heavily admonished the film for satarising the killing of “deplorables,” which is a term that was first coined by Hillary Clinton in September of 2016 during the last Presidential election in reference to Red State republicans. Political satirist Tim Young tells Fox News the portrayal of political violence goes too far. Political commentator Mark Steyn also has characterized the film as a “Liberal Twitterstorm fantasy,” similar to the way activists swarm individuals on the social media platform.
However these commentators seem to be missing a key portion of The Hunt‘s plot, beyond the satirical nature of the film itself. In The Hunt, Betty Gilpin’s character “Crystal” turns the tables on the “elites,” ultimately hunting them down one by one. The elites also appear to be portrayed as the bad guys in the film, living posh and out-of-touch lives. However, concern that political acrimony could spill over into similar violence as the film portrays, or how the film could trigger victims due to the recent mass shootings remain fair concerns.
President Trump also weighed in on the controversy Friday (8-9) morning, though he didn’t mention The Hunt by name. “Hollywood, I don’t call them the elites, I think the elites are people they go after in many cases,” Trump told reporters in an impromptu press conference outside The White House, “Hollywood is really terrible. You talk about racist, Hollywood is racist. What they’re doing with the kind of movies they’re putting out is actually very dangerous for our country.”
Despite the controversy, release of The Hunt will move forward, just not the marketing and promotion of it. Universal chose to suspend marketing in response to the recent mass shootings, and before President Trump’s comments.

Folks, I totally understand there is a political element to this story, but let’s please try to keep the discussion on this specific subject. Thanks!
August 10, 2019 @ 6:34 am
One thing I would like to point out, is that there has already been two movies made with this exact plot. They both came out at almost the same time in the 90’s. The first was “Hard Target” starring Jean Claude Van Dam., and the other was called “ “ starring Ice-T. The only differences I can see through what I saw on the trailer and read, was the terms “deplorable” etc., and the fact that it’s a females in the lead good guy/bad guy roles. It does seem to have a much more political rhetoric then the previous movies I mentioned, but same story, “elites” vs. the “poor”.
August 10, 2019 @ 9:55 am
Oh, this same basic plot has been rehashed dozens of times in not just film, but novel and short story form. It’s basically its own trope. Who knows if this film will be any good. I just feel the need to point out that if your conclusions from the trailer is that this movie is nothing more than bloodsport fantasy for liberal elites, you need to watch it again.
August 10, 2019 @ 3:09 pm
Also a lot like The hunger games…
August 9, 2019 @ 11:06 am
I’m just here with a big bowl of popcorn for the comments.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:42 am
Same here.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:09 am
Well, clearly Sturgill dies early in this movie ’cause he’s in the trailer for half a second and doesn’t appear in any other scenes with the rest of the cast. Also, in the trailer for Queen & Slim he literally dies on screen almost immediately. Haven’t seen “The Dead Don’t Die” but I guess he plays a dead guy?
I predict a new meme for Sturgill: “Oh, Sturgill’s in this movie? Is he dead, if not, what’s the over-under on how fast he dies?”
August 9, 2019 @ 11:23 am
Same for Queen and Slim. Looks like his character gets taken out very early on. He’s been typecast!
August 9, 2019 @ 11:30 am
Mmhmm, I mentioned that. 😉
Is this perhaps an indictment of Sturgill’s acting ability? Like, “We’ll cast you in the project but, since you can’t act, we’re going to have to kill your character pretty quickly. Deal?”
Honestly, I have no idea whether Sturgill’s a good actor or not. Haven’t seen him onscreen yet.
August 9, 2019 @ 2:57 pm
I’ve seen some scenes he’s in from a movie called Orca Park a few years back and he actually was pretty good.
August 13, 2019 @ 10:10 am
He was really good in Orca Park and One Dollar.
August 9, 2019 @ 3:26 pm
He had a fairly decent sized role in the CBS All Access show One Dollar which was pretty damn good.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:06 pm
LOL he’s the new Sean Bean/Ned Stark. He died in every movie or show he’s in.
August 9, 2019 @ 5:08 pm
I saw “The Dead Dont’t Die,” not because of Sturgill, but rather Bill Murray.
It’s a very dry, meta humor movie. Not something I would generally recommend unless I know that’s their style of humor.
As an actor, Sturgill shows up as a zombie dragging a guitar.
But his song “The Dead Dont Die” is played repeatedly throughout the film, with a number of “Who sings this? I like it.” “Its Sturgill Simpson’s new song.” “oh, I love that dude”
August 9, 2019 @ 5:27 pm
Yeah, the cast looks great but I heard the movie itself wasn’t so great. I’ll rent it when it’s available.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:26 am
The more I read about the plot, the more awful the film sounded. Sounds like they made a good decision to can this stinker, regardless of the political implications.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:33 am
They’re not canning the movie, just the promo and trailers. This studio specializes in low budget horror. They’ll put the movie out and make back their money easily, just riding off the controversy – especially now since the controversy involves class warfare and gun issues. Those two hot-button topic will put asses in seats.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:28 am
Wait, there is gonna be a movie without comic book heroes? I’m ready to see Sturg take a turn as Aquaman.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:36 am
Looks like an updated version of Surviving the Game from 1994 starring ice-t. Other than being unoriginal, it seems innocuous enough. I have no doubt there is some kind of underlying political theme or narrative, but I can’t figure out who are supposed to be the republicans and democrats. I find it hard to believe that Hollyweird would make a movie where a Trump Supporter would be the victor tho.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:56 am
The Hunted are called Deplorables
The Hunters are called Elites
Sturgill is one of the hunted ones and is named Kid Rock and is from Orlando, FL
You do the math
If people didn’t get their knickers in a knot so easily, it wouldn’t be a big deal
August 9, 2019 @ 12:49 pm
If you’re opposed to the promotion of this movie because it might inadvertently trigger some sort of traumatic PTSD response in somebody due to the recent shootings, I think that’s fair. If you’re opposed to this movie because you believe it’s simply a blood orgy of the killing of Red State dwellers for liberals to pump their fists at, I think you’re being highly presumptive and didn’t even thoroughly watch the 2-minute trailer.
August 9, 2019 @ 7:53 pm
I wasn’t opposing the movie in any way shape or form. I also don’t know who the good and bad guys are. He just said he couldn’t tell who the republicans were and who the democrats were. I think the names spared us the trouble of trying to guess.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:18 pm
On the surface it looks like a film about affluent urbanites hunting rural Americans like animals for fun. I’m confused, because it looks like the “deplorables” are the protagonist and the coastal elites are antagonist. I just can’t imagine left leaning Hollywood making a movie where the Trump supporters are the good guys. I also can’t imagine Stugill signing on to do a movie playing a someone who is a trump supporter, knowing his politics the way I do. I guess if he’s trying to expand into acting, he’ll take any part he can get I suppose.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:09 pm
“Always. Check. The Barrel” – Ice-T
August 9, 2019 @ 12:18 pm
It immediately reminded me of Hard Target, with political overtones added in.
Of course all of these hearken back to the short story The Most Dangerous Game.
August 10, 2019 @ 12:05 am
Surviving the Game wasn’t original either. It was a take on The Most Dangerous Game.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:43 am
So is the specific subject we should limit our comments on is Sturgill Simpson? Four paragraphs are not dealing with that subject. Not being a wise-ass, just trying to figure out how to make a respectful comment and honor Trag’s request, which I think we should attempt to do.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:55 am
I just don’t want constant back and forths about the 2nd Amendment or Trump or whatever that won’t resolve anything and will just turn this comments section into a train wreck.
For the record, I was planning to post about Sturgill Simpson’s involvement in the movie for the last few days, and it kept on getting pushed because of breaking news (Willie, Birthplace of Country, Pickathon deaths, etc.) I missed posting about it when the movie was first announced because I was covering a festival at the time. This morning when I looked to see if there were any updates, and that’s when I saw everything about the controversy. Generally I like to avoid subjects with such deep political tie-ins if necessary, but I had basically already committed to posting about the movie before the political quotient revealed itself. I also felt inclined to point out that some of the negative commentary on the movie is leaving out some very important plot points. For all we know, the movie is satirizing both sides, or nether side, and is more trying to make a statement about political acrimony taken too far. “The Hunt” might ultimately reveal itself as just another silly horror movie with a rehashed plot. But I don’t think its fair to the film to draw any conclusions about a political bias to it until people have seen it.
August 9, 2019 @ 11:49 am
The hypocritical irony of politics in this country is insufferable…
Can Hollywood maybe focus on making a GOOD movie for once? Like, oh, I don’t know, maybe start with a well-written script with an engaging story and good characters?
Why even watch movies anymore? It’s all remakes and low-effort garbage. Kind of like mainstream music…
August 10, 2019 @ 12:08 am
Go see Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood or The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
August 10, 2019 @ 6:10 am
Once Upon A Time is a very good movie with an outstanding soundtrack.
August 10, 2019 @ 3:45 pm
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood had quite possibly the best ending that I have ever seen in film. Leo and Brad killed it.
August 11, 2019 @ 8:53 am
One of the most satisfying uses of the Chekhov’s Gun principle
August 9, 2019 @ 11:56 am
The only thing this movie makes me want to do is go re-watch the hit classic “Surviving the Game”, featuring Ice-T. It’s a shame that Sturgill wasn’t more selective when deciding to accept this role.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:02 pm
Studio: We have a movie where you get to kill “deplorables” should we send you the scri…..?
Actors: Kill “deplorables”….I’m in.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:21 pm
Got it Trigger. Most movies coming out of Hellywood, if it contains political messages, are always liberal. No additional comments needed.
Maybe Sturgill is seeing this as a door into further roles. I’m sure if he could participate in said message he would jump at the chance. Who knows if that is his main motivation. It will be interesting to see if there is public demand for further appearances. One does not know if he is being pushed by the powers-at-large because of his unique political stance and the genre he is most identified with.
Maybe he is genuinely trying to become an actor with no false pretense. Though I hardly think that is the case. Seems like with him there is always a message to his madness.
Regardless, the movie and his acting ability should stand on their own merits.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:42 pm
Just a theory, possibly entirely wrong, but this movie doesn’t seem pro-lefty politics to me at all. It seems to want to tap into middle-American class warfare politics, where the rednecks are the underdog heroes fighting the wealthy predatory elites.
This movie studio, not a Hollywood powerhouse by any means, specializes in cheap schlock horror done on a low budget. Titillation and dollars are the motivation, not politics – though they did get accolades for vaguely political movies like Blakkklansman and Get Out (the former being pretty mediocre and the latter being an entertaining but shallow surprise).
Yeah, Sturgill’s a lefty, but he’s also a working man’s hero, so this particular script probably attracted him in that regard, ie. redneck fights back against the system.
August 10, 2019 @ 12:13 am
I loved both BlacKKKlansman AND Get Out, and I’m about as conservative as you can get. There was also nothing vaguely political about them. They were pretty upfront.
August 10, 2019 @ 6:18 am
Yeah, you’re right, but I I guess what I meant was that their politics were either pretty safe or widely accepted as valid already (“the klan is bad” or “racial violence is bad”, yes we know, the vast majority of us agree already). Nothing particularly radical, unique, or challenging.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:24 pm
After watching the trailers, the thing that struck me was that the movie not only contains liberal stereotypes of conservatives, but conservative stereotypes of liberals as well.
They’re calling the movie “satire”; I wonder if they’re meaning it as a warning to how we’ll end up as a nation if we don’t get a grip on ourselves and start talking to one another in a normal tone of voice again.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:53 pm
I think this could definitely be the case. Making assumptions on the plot arc of this movie without seeing it is like judging the entire new Tyler Childers album after hearing only the first two songs. “The Hunt” very well could be some offensive work bashing red staters, I don’t know. But it takes a very shallow observance of what we do know about the film to come to that conclusion.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:00 pm
I’m particularly thinking about the longer of the two trailers I saw; Hillary Swank’s character came across to me (even in that very brief presentation) as quite cold and evil.
I figure if this were just some sort of hit job on red staters they would be portrayed as the evil ones, getting their comeuppance from “noble” blue staters. I’m just not seeing that.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:15 pm
I would have thought it would have been more likely for conservatives to applaud the portrayal of elites as evil than be all upset, but I guess the assumption is that if Hollywood is behind it, that can’t be the scenario.
August 9, 2019 @ 3:43 pm
It’s a little hard to believe that it’s offensive bashing when the deplorables are clearly the heroes in the trailer.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:50 pm
The warning movie? They made that one already–Idiocracy
August 9, 2019 @ 3:30 pm
And with every passing day, Idiocracy is becoming more fact than fiction.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:33 pm
Trailer I saw it seemed like the purge more than anything but on a smaller and worse scale
August 9, 2019 @ 12:36 pm
In addition to ‘Surviving the Game’, there is also a new movie coming out literally in 2 weeks called ‘Ready or Not’ about a new bride being hunted down by her rich eccentric in-laws. So yeah, it’s another unoriginal premise Hollywood has beat to death.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:37 pm
No Oscar for Sturgill Simpson?
Maybe his performance is “good” enough for a Razzie nomination.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:46 pm
Stinks for sturgel and his fellow cast and crew that there movie isn’t being promoted in the traditional sense . But maybe this unconventional way will do the trick
I mean what’s this movie that the president is talking about that the studio won’t show ads for
Sites like
This promoting the movie by talking about how there not promoting the move ? Could
Do wonders
August 9, 2019 @ 1:03 pm
The movie will earn back its budget pretty quick, on controversy alone. No trailers needed. Just reactionary political news coverage. I saw this trailer a while back and was fairly uninterested. Now, I’m much more curious. I bet I won’t be alone in that regard.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:54 pm
I saw a commercial for this movie right in the midst of all the coverage of the recent mass shootings. I had no idea Sturgill was in it or that it made references to “deplorables,” but when I saw the commercial I turned to my husband and said, “That looks stupid.” I don’t think I’m wrong.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:56 pm
He died in Orca Park, too…that and Black Hog Gut are good early indications of his natural acting ability. I suspect he’s mostly just having fun at this point, but he’s sure not shying away from controversial subjects Even One Dollar had some political overtones. Quees & Slim is gonna have some really strong reactions also.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:30 pm
Queen & Slim = black Bonnie & Clyde, in the BLM era. Evil white cop (Sturgill) gets his comeuppance and black cop-killer protagonist goes on a righteous journey of self discovery.
Yeah, it’s gonna get some strong press and crowd reaction.
Based on the trailer, it actually looks well done (cinematically, and acting, at least), despite the politics. I’m way open to checking it out. I just like good movies, whatever the story. For example, Sorry to Bother You was heavily political, with politics I don’t necessarily agree with, but I enjoyed it a lot. Should’ve got the Oscar nom instead of Blakkklansman (and Black Panther getting a nom was a joke), but the director (a devout reactionary communist, somewhat ironic) refused to submit it for consideration, openly declaring the Hollywood/Academy establishment to be a farce. I respect him for that.
August 9, 2019 @ 12:57 pm
Does Sturgill play the actual Kid Rock?
August 9, 2019 @ 1:11 pm
No he’s some dude with neck tattoos from Orlando. No explanation on the name
August 9, 2019 @ 2:16 pm
Rock is a street name for crack or meth, can’t remember which one. But just from the look of him, I could totally believe him being a meth head.
August 9, 2019 @ 3:31 pm
No but there is an obvious trolling joke in having Sturgill play the character.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:09 pm
Is this the alternative version of Red State? While I’m not one for censoring entertainment maybe there are just some topics that that don’t have a place at the table in this political climate.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:15 pm
Remember some years ago, it was reported that some company had set up getaways for affluent guys in a jungle-like environment, where they get to hunt nude women using bows rubber-tipped arrows, and shoot and capture and tress up? It was reported on the Internet and on regular TV news and spurred all sorts of outrage about misogyny. Of course, it turned out to be a complete and utter hoax, but it fit perfectly with what the mainstream media want to believe, so they bought it
August 9, 2019 @ 3:12 pm
If you’re a conservative that’s all up in arms about this movie then you either didn’t actually watch the trailer and are just repeating what you heard on Fox News or you lack the ability to comprehend even the least subtle of movie trailers. It looks like Betty Gilpin’s character (the blonde woman with a Southern accent) is the protagonist and the wealthy elites are the antagonists. It may not be so cut and dry as liberal vs. conservative, instead it might be blue collar/ middle or lower class vs upper class, but it’s not hard to imagine that some of the protagonists lean to the right. This movie doesn’t look Oscar worthy, but Blumhouse has put out some very solid horror/ horror comedy movies the past few years and there are some comedic actors I really enjoy in this (Betty Gilpin, Ike Barinholtz, Emma Roberts), plus Sturgill, so I’m definitely looking forward to waching this with a couple of beers and some popcorn.
August 9, 2019 @ 3:28 pm
Just sounds like a knock off of an Aussie movie from he 80s called Turkey Shoot. Exactly the same thing.
August 9, 2019 @ 5:23 pm
There is also the Schwarzenegger movie The Running Man.
August 9, 2019 @ 3:29 pm
The snowflakes have their knickers twisted up again. It’s some sort of satire but clearly the “deplorables” are the heroes. Sturgill playing a character named Kid Rock is pretty funny.
August 9, 2019 @ 3:32 pm
Of course leave it up to Faux News to spout off more bullshit.
August 9, 2019 @ 5:21 pm
When I saw the outrage on social media I thought this was a terrible idea for a movie. After watching the trailer I don’t really know what all the fuss was about.
August 10, 2019 @ 6:08 pm
Did you touch those young womerns?
August 9, 2019 @ 8:57 pm
It is just another knockoff of “The Most Dangerous Game.”
Read the excellent short story. It is a masterpiece of character and tension.
August 9, 2019 @ 10:53 pm
Aw, now the right are being the snowflakes; tough luck, now most of them will know how people feel about things.
August 10, 2019 @ 12:18 am
plenty of country artists has dipped their toes in hollywood to more or less success (i’m looking at you, kris kristofferson). not to forget mentioning country songs turned into feature films (coat of many colors, harper valley pta & coward of the county).
i think that if we get down to brass tacks. the issue here isn’t that sturgill is trying to be an actor or how this will influence his music for better or worse, the issue is with the movie itself and that is a political issue. mark my words; this will come back and bite sturgill in the ass, sooner or later….
August 10, 2019 @ 8:24 am
It won’t bite him in the ass. Sturgill’s been pretty upfront with his politics, and he hasn’t courted conservatives (musical, or political) in many years (if ever). Yet he keeps getting more mainstream accolades and fame.
Like Musgraves, he’s got the support of political and cultural centrists (people who simply enjoy the music), but more importantly (in a commercial sense) support from the left who view him (like Lil Nas X) as a shining light for progressive cultural politics – whether he wants it or not, either way it’s good for business.
August 10, 2019 @ 5:20 am
I think this movie looks beyond dull-witted and I don’t care to hear another word about Sturgill Simpson unless it’s about a country music album he releases (and not that Dead parody song).
August 10, 2019 @ 7:07 am
The producers are claiming its satire but I’m not sure what they are trying to satirize. I think it’s intended to generate cash from controversy. We should know by now to not look to Hollywood or the music industry for coherent political or social messages.
August 10, 2019 @ 7:19 am
As a real life deplorable, I wouldn’t miss this for anything.
I don’t do sci fi, The Hunger Games or most other stuff which emanates from large Hollywood studios, HBO, Showtime, Netflix, etc.
But I like smaller productions, art flicks and similar types of movies.
And I really like guns (I’ve been a collector for years, but I seldom shoot them).
As for me, I don’t offend.
It actually looks like a fun movie.
August 10, 2019 @ 6:15 pm
Yes. I realized that I’ve always been a deplorable. When I was in 5th grade, our school had a mock election for the 1992 presidential election. Bush won. Bush, Clinton, and Perot received votes. I was the only person, out of 800 kids who wrote in Pat Buchanan. I’ve wanted a wall since I was in diapers.
August 10, 2019 @ 9:44 am
This movie is preposterous.
August 10, 2019 @ 1:54 pm
UPDATE: Accordian to the Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/aug/10/the-hunt-release-cancelled-gun-violence-trump-criticism ) the release of the film has now been canceled.
August 10, 2019 @ 2:40 pm
What a mess.
August 11, 2019 @ 12:41 pm
Weirdest culture war flap since “Old Town Road” especially since again, everybody seems to be misunderstanding or misrepresenting the context of this project.
By the same token I wonder if the other forthcoming Sturgill movie Queen & Slim will get similar treatment, what with the hero being a cop killer. Why would people be more accepting of a political drama about a fictional cop killer than an action/thriller about a fictional war between “deplorable” and “elites”? If people think the latter would encourage civil violence, then why not the former?
August 10, 2019 @ 2:32 pm
I watched the original Walking Tall with Joe Don Baker a couple days ago- as far as this one goes, I don’t do “horror movies”, or Sturgil Simpson satirical or not- I wouldn’t watch it if I was paid to.
August 10, 2019 @ 3:11 pm
Didn’t they already make this movie back in the 90s with Rutger Hauer and Ice-T?
August 11, 2019 @ 8:36 am
Understandable why it was pulled at this moment in time, but I’d have to know more details about the movie before I could pass judgement on it’s plot. So far I’ve only heard the same vague description.
August 12, 2019 @ 8:32 am
I sure hope the production company changes its mind, because I would really like to see it.
At the end of the day, so to speak, it’s just a movie.
August 12, 2019 @ 8:40 am
This movie has been made a few times already… this idea goes back to the short story, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell which was originally published in 1924.
Ice-t was in a version of it… and there was twist of it by that jean claude van damme guy… so dunno why people are up in arms now except the usual keyboard mafia deciding what is best for the rest of us.
August 12, 2019 @ 11:07 am
My fantasy movie is the one where Sturgill Simpson decides to be content as a country singer.
August 12, 2019 @ 12:04 pm
Why should he be content doing the same shit over and over? He’s allowed to evolve as an artist just as much as you are to whine about it.
August 12, 2019 @ 1:20 pm
Lol.
Speaking of a movie about somebody who just wants to be a country singer, anybody seen Wild Rose, starring Jessie Buckley, about a Scottish girl who dreams of coming to America to be a country singer? Gets 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Haven’t seen it yet, but want to. Looks good.
August 12, 2019 @ 12:03 pm
If you watched the trailer you basically watched the whole move anyways so we’re not missing much by it not being released.
August 14, 2019 @ 8:36 am
Hopefully a bootleg shows up online at some point. It looked well done, and rehashed plots are typically rehashed because they work.
Anybody who thinks this is leftist propaganda either didn’t watch the trailer, or is unconsciously saying the right is anti-working-class. May want to rethink that stance lest they contradict their beliefs.
