Saving Country Music’s 2018 Artist of the Year
Music is just one of the many factors to weigh when naming the Artist of the Year. Unlike Album of the Year nominees, and Song of the Year nominees, this is not a distinction that is put up for a vote to the public, and it’s not just about the appeal any particular artist might garner for their yearly musical output, live or recorded.
Who is chosen for Artist of the Year is directly tied to a man’s or woman’s effort and achievement in fighting for the honesty, integrity, history, and cross-generational appeal of country music, and in whatever capacity they might shoulder that cause. It could be solely tied to setting an example with their music, and finding great appeal and acclaim in that effort. Or it could be taking a leadership role via speaking out about the troubles the genre faces. Personal character could also weigh in, as could their overall effort over the year, meaning the doggedness with which they pursued their goals and conquests.
With Tyler Childers, all of these factors measured into the conclusion. The Kentucky native did not release a new record in 2018, though his breakout Purgatory from 2017 still had one of the greatest impacts on country music in this calendar year as any new release, and the re-issue of his Live At Red Barn Radio session also kept fans well-satiated. He was on tour virtually the entirety of 2018, selling out nearly every one of his headliner stops. He played important festivals such as Newport Folk, Tumbleweed, Stagecoach, and Hinterland. He took a stint over to Europe on an acoustic tour. And everywhere he went he left mouths agape, and people believing.
Tyler Childers also used his newly-won attention to help draw attention to others, which is another important attribute of an Artist of the Year. Whether it was guesting with bluegrass outfit Town Mountain on their song “Down Low” and taking them out on tour, or doing the same with his old buddies The Wooks, or shouting out fellow Appalachia songwriter John R. Miller, Tyler Childers hasn’t let where he’s going get in the way of remembering where he’s from. This was underscored even more when he chose to take the initiative to help raise awareness and donations for the Martin County, Kentucky’s water crisis recently.
There were other artists in country music who also exuded similar leadership, and certainly deserve mention, and consideration for being the best artist in country music in 2019. Cody Jinks had a big year with a new album, and a very successful inaugural Loud and Heavy fest, which will hopefully be a rallying point for true country fans for years to come. Whitey Morgan (who was the Artist of the Year in 2015) also helped keep the heart of country music beating with his new record Hard Times and White Lines. Sarah Shook had a breakout year in 2018, and don’t be surprised if she challenges for the award in years to come. So did Brandi Carlile, even if Brandi’s been around for much longer. From garnering an incredible six Grammy Award nominations, to launching the important Girls Just Wanna festival, if someone should be considered a runner-up, perhaps it’s Brandi.
It was no easy decision to settle on Tyler Childers. But when he took the stage at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee—the Mother Church of Country Music—during the Americana Music Association’s awards and honors in September, and after receiving the distinction of Emerging Artist of the Year (and having the presenter pronounce his name wrong), he said, “As a man who identifies as a country music singer, I feel Americana ain’t no part of nothin’. It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers. It kind of feels like ‘Purgatory.’ ” ...and that pretty much solidified it. The guts to deliver this message, and the potency of the message itself sealed Tyler’s place as the preeminent country music contributor in the last 12 months.
The Americana Music Association is not the culprit for the high crimes and misdemeanors being perpetrated against country music. If anything, they’re at the forefront of trying to do something about them, and offering a haven for artists pushed out of what is rightfully theirs in the proper country music genre. But “Americana,” nor any other term should ever be used as an alternative to “country,” which is for the people, and by the people, and must be defended from being co-opted by the financial cretins on Music Row and elsewhere who unfairly use Americana as a relegating term.
Standing up for the integrity of country music is not easy, especially these days when speech is increasingly stifled, speaking your mind is significantly frowned upon, and so often business interests must weigh into what you say. But instead of keeping his lips tight—intimidated by the idea that his words would hinder his career—Tyler Childers said what he was thinking, as were the rest of us.
Tyler Childers wasn’t being rude, and he wasn’t being an Outlaw. Tyler Childers was simply being 100% honest, just like his music is 100% of the time. He knows no different, like all of the greats who’ve come before him. And for that, he is Saving Country Music’s 2018 Artist of the Year.

You have to be kidding. The guy puts out a mediocre (at best) album, and he deserves artist of the year? Tyler is on a different level than Cody, especially now that Lifers is out.

December 21, 2018 @ 2:01 pm
I personally think Lifers is a great album, as is Whitey’s new album, along with many others. I will have seen Tyler 10 times by the end of this year, and have seen Cody and Whitey both multiple times this year. They all put on an amazing show and all of them had a big impact on country music this year, but there can only be 1 winner. Tyler Childers is an amazing songwriter, and his music resonates with people. I would have to have to decide the winner, as there is so much great country music being made these days!

December 21, 2018 @ 5:20 pm
Nothing wrong with being 2nd. Damn are we living in a special time when we are debating Childers vs Jinks. We are the winners.
I think if new artist Joe Blow released Lifers, we’d all like it more. Jinks is a victim of his own success … he set the bar too high.
Childers is a generational talent. Jinks has built a small empire through blood and sweat. Both are great. But one tried to sell us a beaver pelt …. just joking!

“I think if new artist Joe Blow released Lifers, we’d all like it more. “
I agree. I think it’s a really solid album. Don’t understand how some think it’s terrible.
Alec Richmond
December 21, 2018 @ 7:50 pm
Agree with both above points. Make no mistake, I wasn’t trying to start a (pointless) Lifers debate all over again. Its a solid album with a couple great moments..
To say Jinks was a victim of his own success is spot on. Tyler just happened to explode this year in a Sturgillesque way.

December 21, 2018 @ 8:10 pm
Never said it was terrible, and I disagree that he is a victom of the bar being too high….he’s still young and hopefully has plenty of juice left to make great albums. My main problem is that is got too much of the same drum driven, rushed lyric rock song structure that doesn’t let his badass country voice shine. The production is also boomy and harsh in many areas. I’ve let it sit and come back to it a few times, but just can’t get into it. Of course, that’s my opinion.

I haven’t found any music I enjoy quite as much as the stuff this guy puts out. And this is coming from a guy who listens to Jimmie Rogers, ET, Hank, Marty Robbins, Webb Pierce, Waylon, Willie, Billy Joe and many more. He is that good.
All future album releases by Tyler Childers should hereby be declared National Holidays.

My Artist Of The Year: Troy Cassar-Daley
When you buy his music or go to his concerts you know what you get…quality & honesty.
He released a 42-track Greatest Hits album a couple of month ago & all songs are great & hits.
The 49 year old singer/songwriter is the leading male country music artist in Australia (together with Lee Kernaghan) & he is also known for his tireless charity work.
A 30 year career brought him 31 #1 hits (like his current singe “Wouldn’t Change A Thing”), platinum & gold albums, 36 Golden Guitars, 9 Deadlys (Awards for indigenous artists), 4 Australian Country Music Association Entertainer of the year awards, 4 ARIAs & APRAs.
He was the 50th inductee in the Roll Of Renown. The highest honour for australasian country music artists.
Oh…btw…Tyler Childers is not bad too.

You’ve got to be kidding!! Australian country music is fucking awful, Wolfe Brothers, Lee Kernaghan, Adam Brand? Barely passes as music, Sunny cowgirls? Songs about white sunglasses and ute musters? Bad bad stuff.
Shouldn’t even rank in the list of country music.

December 21, 2018 @ 6:20 pm
Agreed, its getting very dismal over here.
Troy is a really nice guy and talented, but definitely peaked at Long Way Home. There’s not as much money in the music business here so lots of artists are a lot more part time.
Add in that most singers I talk to don’t put in the effort to learn anything about musical history and talk about being individual and creative in lieu of practicing.
Im finding more real country music at hipster festivals than at country festivals. Its sad.

So, 2018 was supposed to be Cody’s year, but Tyler has rocketed past him for sure. 2018 turned out to be the year of the hilljack, and he could easily go back to back if he has a strong release for 2019. I think I saw on IG he was in the the studio recently. And his do is looking pretty shnazzy. I have a feeling he’s going to try to open some mainstream eyes with his next record by getting all duded up like Sturgill, but please don’t stray from country Tyler!
Chris
December 21, 2018 @ 11:19 am
He’s a real mensch for coming out and saying that. Americana is all well and good, but country music is a bigger and more important tradition and real country singers are part of it whether Music Row likes it or not.

Can’t argue.
he has made an impact, impact, impact
the red barn re-issue is stellar sounding as well.
I saw him 3 times this year. Top notch experiences.
I like the fact he is bringing a youthful audience as well, appreciating good music.
Purgatory is still going strong.. Can’t count how many times I’ve played that since it came out.

Tyler is awesome. So is Cody. Awards are silly. Music is art and beauty is in the ears of the beholder. We are fortunate to have these artists in their prime and I’ve seen them both in concert several times. We just need Jamey Johnson to get over his writers block or whatever he’s dealing with and to have Sturgill veer a little back toward that classic Waylon sound and I will be in Country music heaven.

Hi
This comment has nothing to do with the post, but I want to thank for the existence of this page, for showing me great artists like Randall King, Aaron Lewis, Cody Jinks and Tyler Childers and several others. I’m Brazilian and I really enjoy country music and I also discovered the existence of a genre called American but I only know Jason Isbell, if anyone can recommend me good singers of Americana?
and because of that site I stopped listening to Jake Owen, Luke Bryan, Cole Swindell and FGL …. They are trash
Sorry if my english is bad ….. thanks for everything.

We’d all probably be better off if most of the following recommendations were classified as Alternative Country or Country Rock, but nowadays more often than not they get lumped together as Americana: Whiskeytown / Ryan Adams / Caitlin Cary, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, The Jayhawks, Cowboy Junkies, Tift Merritt, Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, Courtney Marie Andrews, Erin Rae (and the Meanwhiles), Vivian Leva. Forefathers and foremothers: Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith.

For recent country-flavored Americana artists, check out Lori McKenna and Ray Wiley Hubbard. To hear a pioneer work of Americana, listen to Gene Clark and Doug Dillard’s “The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark” (1968) as well as Gene Clark’s “White Light” (1971). To see howAmericana can cross international boundaries, take a look at this video, featuring the Swedish group First Aid Kit: https://youtu.be/Y3TzP-o4vhs

Look, as far as I’m concerned the greatest contribution to authentic Country Music in the whole damn decade was Joshua Hedley’s “Mr Jukebox.”
But Tyler Childers has made a bigger bang, more cultural impact, more humanitarian impact, and has basically been a modern Country Music star and he definitely deserves all the accolades anyone can give him and then some.
He’s a take no prisoners full speed ahead do it my way kind of artist who says what he means, means what he says, and speaks in a plain blunt manner and tells the world how he feels and doesn’t care who knows it
And he’s Sturgill’s prodigy if ever anyone could be.
Sorry for babbling but I am in a really good mood today
Tyler Childers has a shot at being the next big all-genre superstar, maybe even bigger than Sturgill and Stapleton.

I was in my bar Bub City a couple weeks back and a local band launches into Whitehouse Road and I about dropped my drink in excitement. Most bands are obviously playing a lot of the usual dreck along with their own stuff but these guys were educating the crowd saying that was a Tyler Childers song. I went up and thanked them on their break. The only time I can remember on here where there’s no argument….lol

I see what you’re saying after I re read this entire thread again and God knows I try not to bring him up as much as you say we many of us do (I personally didn’t bring him up in THIS debate). Let’s see how Tylers next 5 albums sound and when Tyler has 20-30 great songs then maybe some of us we’ll let it go. Until then….. I’ll take Cody’s “nuts” over most. Yep…. even your boy wonder Tyler.

I don’t think it’s too early to say he’s already got 25 great songs, and he’s only dropped 2 proper albums. And if these new unrecorded tunes he’s been playing lately are any indication, it’s only going to get better.
And in my non-expert opinion there’s been entirely too much talk about mens’ nuts in the posts above.????
Benny Lee
December 23, 2018 @ 9:19 am
I’m a fan of both, but to imply that Tyler doesn’t already have more killer songs than Cody is ridiculous. He’s been playing 50(?) or so songs that he hasn’t put on a proper LP yet that are every bit as good as the best stuff on Purgatory. He could stop writing today and still put out 5 more great albums.

Tyler is not my boy wonder. I don’t personally put artists over one another. The point that was missed entirely was, this “award” went to Tyler. Let him have his moment. Stop the comparisons, and just let it be. We’re all very fortunate to have several great artists to listen to. Don’t like it, keep it to yourself. It’s really not a big deal.

There are a handful of artists I personally prefer to Childers; however, with the whole body of work along with who he is and his impact overall, I think Trigger is dead-on with the selection. Trigger’s very well-articulated case for Childers makes a good point that it is more than just who you like better.

I was not putting anyone down…just have my own opinion..I know Tyler.. have met his family blood and otherwise..he is who he appears to be..just a great person..he is a true honest wordsmith..his biggest draw is that he has no walls in his music and live shows..that doesn’t happen very often in a lifetime..i am 73 yrs young have listened to lot of music in those years was not always country but go see him, talk to him if you can, then u will understand..Tyler is a true gift to the world..don’t pit one artist against the other just enjoy them all..I just think if u get the chance to see Tyler(Red) live if u can get a ticket (sold out most shows early )..Tyler is bring back the younger people to roots country that’s good for all of us..just enjoy !
