Saving Country Music’s 2022 Single of the Year
It was in the hills and hollers of Appalachia where country music originally came into being, and it’s those same hills and hollers of Appalachia that are birthing old souls with young bodies that are rising up to save country music. They’re fulfilling the hunger for honesty and authenticity that is lacking in so much of corporate country music today, and that was originally at the heart of making country music an important and beloved art form of America to begin with.
It only seems fitting that 49 Winchester and their song “Russell County Line” would be named the 2022 Saving Country Music Single of the Year. Along with releasing an excellent track on a superb album, the band is also arguably 2022’s most promising emerging act, if they haven’t emerged already, packing out clubs and threatening to set the world on fire in 2023.
It all came together for lead guitarist Brandon “Bus” Shelton, pedal steel player Noah Patrick, bassist Chase Chafin, keyboard player Tim Hall, drummer Justin Louthian, and lead singer Isaac Gibson here in 2022. Their album Fortune Favors The Bold on New West Records found favor with a wide audience with its brand of country soul.
Hailing from Castlewood, VA in the heart of Appalachia (pop. 2000) and first forming on Winchester Street in the unincorporated community, 49 Winchester serves it up greasy, whether it’s Southern fried rock, honky tonk country, sentimental moments tickling the fringes of Americana, or a version of soul that takes all of those influences and stews them up together, creating a launching pad for the soaring voice of Isaac Gibson.
That is all most unmistakably evidenced in the song “Russell County Line.” Receiving nearly 6 million streams so far on Spotify alone, this song has risen to become one of 49 Winchester’s signature tunes, and combines both the infectiousness and substance that the ideal Single of the Year recipient includes.
Fortune Favors The Bold is all about the band’s attempt to balance pursuing their dreams of making it big in music while remaining grounded to their roots, and faithful to their loved ones. “Russell County Line” is the crown jewel of the set, starting off intimate and sweet, and building to an anthemic crescendo. A Single of the Year is not just about the writing and performance, but about the appeal of how it’s all put together. You will find few more appealing choruses than the one “Russell County Line” turns in.
Congratulations are in order for all of the Single of the Year nominees, with special mention to Kimmi Bitter’s throwback classic country song “My Grass Is Blue,” which far and away received the most votes due to a spirited social media campaign. Kimmi’s future is very bright, and we all look forward to what she might have in store in 2023 and beyond.
But in the present, 49 Winchester is the band that many point to as the one that is taking up the mantle for the new generation of Appalachia music that first sprang back into the consciousness through guys and gals like Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Kelsey Waldon, Tyler Childers, and is now being pushed forward by fellow up-and-comers such as Charles Wesley Godwin, Ian Noe, Brit Taylor, Arlo McKinley, and many more.
Congratulations to 49 Winchester.

Hey, nothing wrong with an independent artists with a strong grassroots fanbase that knows how to mobilize. That will come into good use for Kimmi Bitter.

I can’t wait to hear more from Kimmi. I wasn’t apart of that campaign but that did give me a chance to go listen to that song and was blown away by how beautiful her voice is. Listened to the “Real Me” album and i think i’m in love. Sounded great but she clearly has more potential and hopefully will blow up like 49 Winchester is doing.

I stumbled upon these guys during the lockdowns in 2020 and “It’s a shame I ain’t sittin’ up on some barstool, it’s a shame I ain’t havin’ no fun” hit just right. Been a fan since and have been fortunate enough to see them live twice in small Kentucky clubs. I think those days are numbered for these boys, and I couldn’t be happier for them.

Kyle- serious question: How many hours are in your day?
Writing takes a lot of time- never mind listening!
This Country Music Fan’s writer of the year award goes to: TRIGGER!

I usually put in about 72 hours per week on the website. The vast majority of that is screening album submissions as they come in and listening to albums when they’re released, keeping an up-to-date list and calendar of all of the releases, listening to those releases more in-depth, and composing reviews. Even though that might result in only one or two reviews in a given week, this takes a ton of time, and I still miss stuff.

Really? Good Country voice! The song doesn’t do it for me. I’m very old Country, artists like Lefty, Hank, Patsy, etc. Those are some of the artists whose tunes speak to me.

I have to heartily disagree that Sturgill and Tyler “brought back” the music of Appalachia, it was never gone. There are so many artists such as Chris Knight, Sam Bush and many others who have been doing this the whole time. Also the claim that country music was birthed only in Appalachia is ridiculous on it’s face. There were musicians way up in Canada and all over the west mixing those same influences. The steel guitar came from Hawaii and the banjo is African. It makes us all stupider when you try to over simplify things. Also, those aren’t mountains, they are tall hills.

December 24, 2022 @ 10:02 pm
I’ve written articles over the years specifically about Canadian contributors to country music, and specifically tracing the steel guitar to Hawaii and Polynesia, and the banjo back to Africa, as well as country artists in Europe, Australia, and from all around the world. And of course there are other influences in country aside from Appalachia. But I also think that Appalachia is the homeland of American country music, and I was just trying to tie the appeal of 49 Winchester to a greater context and be complimentary. Let’s not read too much into this.

It ain’t just your opinion, Trig – Bristol TN / VA where these cats are from is literally the Birthplace of Country Music, via the Bristol Sessions, as federally recognized by the Library of Congress. So to say that American country music was born in the hills and hollers of Appalachia is quite correct on its face! Doesn’t get any more country than that.

Used to see these boys piled into an old van, pulling an older trailer and wondering if they had enough gas to get to the gig. Gary would be driving and when I asked where they were headed it always seemed to be KY or NC. NOT ANYMORE!!!! These boys are hot and I couldn’t be prouder. Terry

Great song…great band. Looking forward to seeing them at Under the Big Sky this coming July.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see them return the next summer as one of the headliners— as Zach Bryan just did…
