Shania Twain Goes 80s Glam Instead of Going 90s Country

We got a sense that Shania Twain was getting ready to rekindle her Nashville presence when she was recently named as one of the upcoming inductees to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame for 2022. These things rarely transpire by happenstance for superstars like this. It often coincides with something larger. That something larger has now been revealed.
Announced last week, Shania Twain has signed with Republic Nashville to release new music. Though “Republic Nashville” sounds like one of the countless imprints doing business down on Music Row, it’s actually a brand new endeavor for Republic Records, with Shania as the initial artist. In fact, when you Google “Republic Nashville,” the first thing it brings up is a map of the half dozen locations of the Nashville eatery Burger Republic.
“I couldn’t think of a better partner than Republic Nashville,” Shania says in one of those canned press release statements. “I’m honored and excited to be the label’s first artist and lead the charge of this new and exciting chapter. In this respect, it feels like a new beginning all around, and I’m embracing it wholeheartedly.”
You might think that signing with a Nashville record label might be an important symbolic gesture from Shania. After all, she’s a Canadian that’s currently living in Switzerland, so it’s not like Nashville is especially in her orbit at the moment. Perhaps it was a sign she would be returning to her country roots. Say what you want about her output subsequently, but go listen to “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” and try to claim it’s not country. And right now, the 90s country era that Shania was very much a part of is one of the hottest influences in country music at the moment.
But coinciding with the announcement of Shania Twain’s signing with Republic Nashville was the release of the most terrible single called “Waking Up Dreaming” that dashes any hopes for a resurgence of Shania country, and picks up where her paltry 2017 comeback record Now left off, namely horribly-produced pop music.
“Waking Up Dreaming” rips off the rhythm of The Cure’s “Close To Me” just like Shania’s “Any Man of Mine” ripped off Queen’s rhythm for “We Will Rock You.” It also once again features the most unusual suite of electronic embellishments for her voice that make Shania sound outright inhuman. This is what also what helped ruin Now. We know that in the early 00s, Shania was complaining about hoarseness perhaps brought on by Lyme Disease. But whatever they’re doing to her voice in the studio is making it worse instead of better.
I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that Shania Twain’s new single isn’t any good, and isn’t any country either. But why create an imprint for her called Republic Nashville if you’re not even going to fake making country music?
Shania could be doing what other 90s country stars are currently doing, which is growing old with their music, and going back to their roots in an era when 90s country is very popular once again. Go listen to the new album from Ronnie Dunn called 100 Proof Neon as a good example. Instead, Shania Twain is going 80s glam. And do we really see “Waking Up Dreaming” helping Shania cozy up to the Country Music Hall of Fame committee, which will be considering her as a nominee in the coming years?
Shania Twain continues to chase some rekindling of her pop flame, which at this point, puts her strangely at odds with the direction the rest of Nashville and country music are going. There will still be an audience for this vacuous pop music that tries to play off drag queen popularity with its imagery. But that place won’t be in country.

I kept waiting for Speed Racer to pop out of a mirror.
September 27, 2022 @ 10:55 am
…And now the Speed Racer song is stuck in my head.
September 27, 2022 @ 11:05 am
It was actually a reference to A-HA’s “Take on Me” video which where a Speed Racer-ish character reached out of a comic book (not a mirror, my bad) and pulled a girl in.
So now you can have that song stuck in your head, too.
October 2, 2022 @ 12:00 am
Ok, first…yes the new song (which I LOVE btw) is not country…but she was NEVER country!! Her roots are 80s pop, NOT country…if you heard her pre-Mercury recordings, they sound like 80s Heart mixed with dance pop…this whole country thing was foisted onto her by Mercury Nashville execs in the early 90s who discovered her in Canadian resorts…yes she grew up liking good country like Willie Nelson & Johnny Cash, but Mercury folks wanted to mold her into a cookie cutter singer doing radio-oriented crap that she did not write…Mutt Lange changed that plan & I like how she took the country the label foisted on her and turned it on its head, putting it in the context of fun, if albeit shallow, catchy pop, embraced by the masses, reaching its peak with “Come On Over”…the international version is the true sound of the album, a catchy pop record, not a country one…then came the killer “UP!!” with the 3 mixes…the only true good one is the “Red” mix…the “Green” fake country one is terrible which foisted acoustic country instruments that don’t belong or fit onto Euro/powerpop songs that don’t need em…the “Red” title track is the one that shoulda been the single, NOT the horrible “Green” one, which practically ruined a perfectly killer tight catchy powerpop song…and the “Blue” mix was interesting, a true remix, “Bollywood” style!! Then the 4 songs on the first hits collection were fun & welcome…then “Now”, which I really enjoyed because it was not fake country, it was experimental pop with dollops of reggae, which works for me…I think living in Switzerland, combined with her own eclectic tastes & distinct pop sensibility, NOT a country one…is a reason why & it’s a GOOD thing…as for the new song, I also really liked it & happy it’s not country either because she is NOT country, she is POP, and I figured it out…yes the best is a cool catchy rip on the Cure’s “Close To Me” & no, “Any Man Of Mine” is more a nod to Mutt’s old pals Def Leppard in “Pour Some Sugar On Me” than Queen, which I have no prob with…but that chord progression, the hook, leading from the pre-chorus to the chorus sounded REALLY familiar…and I got it…it’s “Genie In A Bottle” by Christina Aguilera!! And the video is fun, a nod to girlbands, new wave, hair bands, not really drag queens, but it might be interpreted as such…as for moving from Mercury to the new Republic Nashville, maybe she has friends in the Nashville community?? But she should really be signed directly to the German arm of Universal instead of Nashville one, she does live in Switzerland, not Nashville, and she has more of a Euro pop sensibility than a US/Nashville one, so this will be interesting…I think her voice is fine, if a bit deeper, from the Lyme disease, but it fits with the music…as for growing with her music?? She IS & embracing her true style in Euro flavoured POP, like how Cher did “Believe” in 1998 in her 50s…her roots & style are NOT 90s crap country, no matter what you might think…sorry…
October 9, 2022 @ 7:40 am
What you have said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response was there anything CLOSE to what could be considered a rational thought. And everyone n this thread is now dumber for having read it.
I award you no points. And may God have mercy on your soul.
March 13, 2023 @ 5:53 pm
Her roots are literally classic country as you can see her first compositions. The 80s pop thing was huge at that time and she wanted to experience that. Since then her style always was with great features of classic country mixed of course with the pop and rock. After her traditional album which didn’t have influence of her, Shania and Mutt loved country music and worked very well together exploring the mixes.
September 27, 2022 @ 9:47 am
This song reinforces what a joke it was to give her the Songwriters Award.
She has been nothing with Mutt. And the data backs it up.
September 27, 2022 @ 9:51 am
Her vocals sound terribly produced, and it is the perfect forgettable single to be lost on an adult pop station within a month at best.
September 27, 2022 @ 6:29 pm
It’ll be in the 99 cents bin at the Circle K two weeks after it’s released.
September 27, 2022 @ 10:11 am
Bailed at 1 minute in.
September 27, 2022 @ 10:19 am
No need to listen, fam! Her “southern” pop shit in the 90’s sucked and I’m not surprised that whatever she’s creating now sucks as much or more.
September 27, 2022 @ 10:29 am
Her self-titled independent album as well as her major label debut were both pretty good.
September 28, 2022 @ 5:20 am
Shania was one of three new acts that Mercury put on a nine-track CD called “Triple Play” in 1993, as well as sending out on tour together. As a part-time country music writer at the time, I got a copy of it mailed to me. The other artists on it were John Brannen, whose career never really took off, and Toby Keith. I didn’t review it, because it was a promo disc rather than an actual release, but I don’t recall anything special about Twain. I do recall thinking that Keith was the obvious future star of the three.
I wonder if that disc is worth anything today. I hope not much, because I ditched it within a week of my first listen.
September 28, 2022 @ 8:59 am
John Brannen. Wow that name brings back memories. I remember Midnight and Magnolias got a lot of airplay on CMT in ’93. Never Say Never Again too.
September 27, 2022 @ 10:50 am
Trigger,
She can’t grow old with her music because she has always portrayed the sexy, desirable, guys want her and girls want to be her image of a singer.
No one wants to see the sex symbol transitioned into grandma.
September 27, 2022 @ 12:14 pm
She is hiding behind many layers of makeup and digital editing. 60 yr old women still look 60
September 27, 2022 @ 3:29 pm
I’d rather see a sex symbol transition into a grandma, than a grandma pretending to be a sex symbol.
September 27, 2022 @ 10:57 am
WTF did I just watch?
Everything today is designed to generate 15 seconds of Twitter feed hype.
September 27, 2022 @ 11:16 am
She looks ridiculous and the song is so bad I didn’t make it halfway through on Friday when it came out. She should be embarrassed. You’d think after the last train wreck of an album she’d go and find the best in the business and beg for help to redeem what little credibility she may of had left. No such luck. I always wondered how big she would’ve gotten had Mutt not found her? Say what you want about him he knows how to make a good sounding record and he knows how to write a memorable song. 2 things she hasn’t had since they broke up.
September 27, 2022 @ 6:17 pm
Mutt was the man behind the curtain. All he did was use the template he created for Def Leppard, production and songwriting wise, and had Shania sing over it. I never found her to be country or that appealing (although with the help of the Mutt machine she did co-write some good songs). She definitely had talent, but without Mutt she would have disappeared after her weak debut and been resigned to the dustbin of music history. The before Mutt and After Mutt recordings prove how essential he was to her sound and songs.
September 27, 2022 @ 11:20 am
Hate her music but loved her videos about as positive as I can be about her.
September 27, 2022 @ 11:29 am
“Shania could be doing what other 90s country stars are currently doing, which is growing old with their music, and going back to their roots in an era when 90s country is very popular once again. Go listen to the new album from Ronnie Dunn called 100 Proof Neon as a good example.”
But Shania and Ronnie Dunn have very different “roots” to go back to.
It’s getting common to refer back to “the 90s” like it was a monolith, but that decade was all over the map too. And even if you try to lump that era together in a broad sense, Shania was a outlier to the mainstream country radio. It’s partially why she blew up so big and created so many headlines. She was pop. She was controversial (for country fans). And she helped take it in a silly, tongue-in-cheek, stylized direction. (I think I even remember an interview where she admitted that “country songs” are supposed to be “silly”.)
I would argue that this new horrible single is proof that she doesn’t actually have any actual “roots” to fall back on. It was skating on the surface-level then. And it’s surface-level now. It’s just not executed well by any measure or any genre.
September 27, 2022 @ 11:58 am
Ya know you actually jarred my memory. The very first album I ever downloaded was Eileen Twain not because I wanted it but she put it up for free and I was just learning how to download a file and burn a CD for the car so I figured this album would be a good test…. Pretty sure it was just an 80’s rock thing if I remember right but I know her first Country album if not 2 were already out. So her “roots” can be a myriad of things as 57 yr. old women from Canada.
September 27, 2022 @ 1:31 pm
The only remotely country-sounding single she ever put out was “No One Needs to Know,” and even that wasn’t exactly “Jolene” or “Coal Miner’s Daughter” or even “Married, But Not to Each Other.” I’ve always maintained the Billy Ray Cyrus began the sad demise of the mainstream country renaissance that had started in the late ’80s, and Shania Twain dug the grave and put the coffin in the ground.
September 28, 2022 @ 2:08 pm
Funny how everyone unmercifully rips Shania Twain apart, while looking at the “product” coming out of Nashville now. I enjoy Shania’s music for what it is, pleasnt and easy…..as opposed to the cringe worthy drivel passing for “country” now. As far as Billy Ray, he helped kill and bury the resurgence and continues to dance on the grave with the continuing vile spawn he has brought forth. If you want to talk betrayal, look at Taylor Swift who has outdone Shania Twain by orders of magnitude….
September 27, 2022 @ 11:37 am
I won’t go so far as to say Twain is nothing without Mutt, mainly because I think a lot of her output is hindered by her needing to write around her vocal issues. I am not as harsh on her last album; there was some good stuff on it, but it was more about her writing through the pain of her divorce. It wasn’t a great album, and it sure as hell wasn’t country, but I applaud the effort.
However, this new song is god awful. And it pains me to say that as I am a huge Shania fan. She doesn’t sound like herself, and to be honest, she’s gone too far with the plastic surgery. She doesn’t even look like herself. I want my 90’s Shania back.
September 27, 2022 @ 11:59 am
” … she’s gone too far with the plastic surgery. She doesn’t even look like herself.”
Going to catch grief for this, but Queen Elizabeth looked better at 96, than a lot of the say, Housewives of … pick a city. Who have had their lips and faces stretched to the grotesque.
You have to love that Andy Cohen is so vicious, and unbalanced, that he insists these “ladies” have multiple plastic surgeries, & apparently sends them to the same stable of plastic surgeons. His “girls” either have that plastic surgery, or get booted.
How stupid can women be … ?
Rhetorical
September 27, 2022 @ 12:12 pm
she is a washed up former star who is basking in the attention from audiences primarily comprised of gay men. And she kinda looks like a drag queen now.
September 27, 2022 @ 12:42 pm
Well this gay man loves her and thinks the new song is garbage…
September 28, 2022 @ 8:05 pm
As a non-binary person of colour, I have to say that your post is offencive. We’ve fought for years to escape the vicious shadow of “camp” that heteros cast upon us. Please rethink your bias. Country music is no longer a white, hetero sanctuary. Our numbers are growing, yours are shrinking. Namaste.
October 3, 2022 @ 1:25 pm
As one of her gay male fans the commenter is spot on. It’s strange how in your comment you claim someone else is offensive by being moreso
March 13, 2023 @ 6:06 pm
Shut the f up. Take your ‘woke’ as$ out of here. Spirit of cattle.
September 27, 2022 @ 12:12 pm
Someone thought this was a good idea.
September 27, 2022 @ 12:19 pm
I keep getting notifications from her on my phone. Don’t recall signing up for that…
September 27, 2022 @ 12:25 pm
If she ever becomes country will someone let me know please?
September 27, 2022 @ 3:24 pm
I liked her a little back in the day but this was just horrible. Nothing wrong with just touring on your past hits. Plenty of material for a show but this would drive your audience away.
September 28, 2022 @ 12:52 pm
I was given tickets to one of her concerts when she played the big arena in Fresno, Ca. back in 2004 or 2005. It was an entertaining show and, if I recall, she even sounded ok.
But….that was a big production with lights and smoke and 10 piece band, etc. etc. Not sure if she could pull off a smaller venue. Would be interesting to see…if it were free…and the beer was free, too..and somebody else like Sunny Sweeney opened for her.
September 30, 2022 @ 12:13 pm
I would show up for Sunny and leave when Shania took the stage.
September 27, 2022 @ 12:31 pm
Is she broke already?
September 27, 2022 @ 2:13 pm
Shania, like Yours Truly,is a Windsor,Ont.,Can. native (but unlike Yours Truly, she and her family moved to Timmins,Ont. when she was a youngster). I wonder if she believes that,as an older (fifty-seven) woman, her days in Country are numbered with today’s poster cowboys getting most of the airplay and decided to tease her old Country fans by signing with a Country label while going 80’s glam pop. It’ll be interesting to see how well her new releases are received.
September 27, 2022 @ 6:21 pm
Since she never released anything remotely country, her days in country were always numbered.
September 27, 2022 @ 2:14 pm
It could be the Mutt Lange (her ex-hubby) influence again.
September 27, 2022 @ 3:12 pm
I grew up in the era she was popular and never really understood the hype. Lasted only a couple of seconds of this. No disrespect but just not for me.
September 27, 2022 @ 3:55 pm
I knew when I saw a Shania article 99% of the comments would be ripping her to pieces. While I am not a fan of her material post Mutt, her legacy cannot be denied. You have to admit, her first 4 albums still sound more country and had better writing than pretty much all females in country music today.
September 27, 2022 @ 6:23 pm
“You have to admit, her first 4 albums still sound more country and had better writing than pretty much all females in country music today.”
Lol. No one has to admit that, because she never released any country albums. She was a pop singer from the start.
September 28, 2022 @ 12:00 pm
Her material post-Mutt has been one album and this single.
If first four albums sound more country and better writing than the female in country music today (those claims aren’t true but sadly the situation is close enough for your claim to be said), it is because she started the pop resurgence in the genre.
It is absolutely true that her legacy can’t be denied. The following generation of female singers in Nashville almost overwhelmingly cite her as an influence. That is partly why Nashville country music is not good.
September 27, 2022 @ 4:34 pm
She is an utter embarrassment. Unfortunately, she is part of country music history.
September 27, 2022 @ 4:44 pm
The fame of Shania Twain, is a reminder of what a depraved and reprobate species we truly are. We should be impressed by our ability to dress ourselves.
March 13, 2023 @ 6:18 pm
Well you must live in another world by thinking she is that horrible. Don’t go outside and see what is going on these days. ????

yet again, marketing / promotion triumphs over work effort in the industry. 🙁
September 27, 2022 @ 6:27 pm
This is just…sad. Good thing she made a shit load of money in the past. Where’s a Mutt when you need him? ????
September 30, 2022 @ 8:05 am
Shagging your best mate, apparently…
September 28, 2022 @ 6:37 am
Wow, what a terrible article and terrible comments. Shania has more talent than anyone on this page could ever dream of having. Her record breaking success is obvious proof of that. What a bunch of whiny old men here, so offended by a powerful and successful female. Shania did more for country music than any other artist ever… period. You all should feel lucky just to have ever been categorized with her. Her new single is an instant hit and proves she can and will do what ever the hell she wants to. I just hope for her sake that it isn’t going to be marketed as country because doing so is so limiting, and the song is obviously 100% pop.
September 28, 2022 @ 7:30 am
For the record, I must confess that I am not, nor have I ever been, a fan of Shania’s. I felt that a lot of her stuff from the late 1990’s was overcooked arena country.
Even so, I too find more than a few of the slams she has gotten here on this dais so over-the-top at times as to be ridiculous. Whether this has to do with the “Is it country or is it ‘pop’?” nature of this latest record of hers or whether some are jealous of the fact that Shania was powerful and successful when she was at the top of her game at the end of the 1990’s are things that can and should be debated (IMHO). But a third argument can be made that some of these slams are being made to cover up some posters’ insecurities about THEIR personal favorite artists as much as the other two.
September 28, 2022 @ 11:41 am
“Shania did more for country music than any other artist ever… period.” Are you 12yrs old?
September 28, 2022 @ 11:57 am
“Shania has more talent than anyone on this page could ever dream of having.”
She was born beautiful. If she wasn’t pretty, she would be working at IHOP. None of her CDs without Mutt have been successful. She was a creation of the music video era.
“Her record breaking success is obvious proof of that.”
No. It is that proof that customers are suckers and that hot women in music videos attract eyeballs. FGL sold a lot of copies. McDonald’s sells a lot.
“Shania did more for country music than any other artist ever… period.
Yeah, no. She didn’t invent the genre or save it. In fact, she drove it into a ditch and poisoned the next generation of female country singers. (Nearly every one in Nashville cites Twain as an influence.)
“What a bunch of whiny old men here, so offended by a powerful and successful female.”
Offended? I am only offended that when people hear Twain’s music, they consider it country music. That is an insult to all the great country music singers: male or female.
Funny thing? Without a man (Mutt, her producer), her career would have disappeared. The facts are clear. Every album without Mutt has been a bust.
“You all should feel lucky just to have ever been categorized with her.”
Got it. You are a musical carpetbagger. You never liked country music until you heard a Shania Twain song.
September 28, 2022 @ 2:29 pm
Ooh, Trigger triggered someone.
For the record, being critical of a female performer is not necessarily sexism or being “threatened”.
As for this becoming a hit, let’s look at “Life’s About to Get Good,” the biggest hit off her last album… Hot Country Songs #33, Country Airplay #36, Adult Contemporary #12. I’d expect this to do no better. Adult Contemporary doesn’t really take anything new these days unless it comes to them from Top 40, and the chances of this getting airplay at CHR are slim to none. Shania is as relevant as Barbra Streisand to today’s CHR listeners, despite her attempts to appeal to the twentysomething crowd by slathering her voice in autotune. In that sense, she’s the country equivalent of Madonna, who also refuses to let her music mature with her and keeps chasing that elusive hit that will make the teenagers who see her as their mom’s (or even grandmother’s) music care about her again.
One thing in her defense… compared to Maren Morris’s Rihannabe repertoire, or compared to Niko Moon or Walker Hayes, Shania’s ’90s music country elements may as well be Loretta Lynn. Songs like “Any Man of Mine” may not have been “real” country but had enough country flavoring so that you knew when you were listening to a country station while flipping through the dial. (Pop remixes of songs like “That Don’t Impress Me Much” notwithstanding.)
September 28, 2022 @ 5:38 pm
“Shania did more for country music than any other artist ever… period.”
More than any other artist to destroy the genre. ????
October 9, 2022 @ 7:46 am
Obvious bot is obvious.
September 28, 2022 @ 8:04 am
Trig,
Sorry to go off topic but I’ve been looking for a chance to ask this for several days – were you planning on addressing Maren Morris’ comments about not feeling comfortable going to country awards shows because of politics, etc…or did you think it would be too contentious? (Not that I’d blame you)
Thanks.
September 28, 2022 @ 9:01 am
I don’t want anyone to not feel comfortable attending the CMA Awards or any function in country music. This genre should be an inviting place for everyone. That said, Maren Morris instigated the recent spat by acting like Jason Aldean’s wife’s Instagram account had anything to do whatsoever with country music, which it doesn’t, and which I’ve already addressed previously. I wrote this a year ago, and it is still relevant, if not more relevant than ever:
https://savingcountrymusic.com/the-medias-obsession-with-jason-aldeans-wifes-instagram-posts/
The media continues to beclown itself by acting like Jason Aldean’s wife’s Instagram account is somehow an important country music issue. Maren Morris wanted attention, which she has an insatiable appetite for, and decided to start the latest shit storm, and the media was right there to back her up. Meanwhile, NOBODY in the media covered how Maren Morris canceled the appearance of a local opener earlier this summer, and they continue to ignore the disinvitation of Mickey Guyton from The Highwomen “Redesigining Women” video shoot, which Maren Morris is a part of. Now she’s out there speaking out against “bullying” on social media. Maren Morris once called me a “basement dweller” on Twitter.
Maren Morris continues to be one of the most problematic people in country music, right behind Morgan Wallen. She’s a hypocrite. She has an insatiable appetite for attention. And the media continues to run interference for her.
I may have more on this at some point. When the whole thing blew up a few weeks ago, I had my focus on the Luke Bell story. I’ve been out in the field their last couple of weeks and dealing with some high level behind-the-scenes stuff this week, and any additional time I have I focus on music, because this is a music website. I believe all of this stuff is in the realm of gossip and a distraction. But if I do address it, I will do it in depth, dispassionately, and try to speak about the deeper rot that is resulting in these kinds of issues.
September 28, 2022 @ 1:04 pm
Marren Morris is what Meghan Markle would be if she were a singer.
And no, lumping Morgan Wallen in with her is a bit short-sighted. My opinion. The media manufactured most of his issues whereas Marren manufactures her own.
September 28, 2022 @ 5:06 pm
I respectfully disagree. Meaghan Markle is already Yoko Ono in my mind hehe.
October 4, 2022 @ 2:43 am
Huh. To see Meaghan Markle get dragged into this was not expected.
September 28, 2022 @ 1:44 pm
Trig, Jason Aldean’s wife’s Instagram becomes a “country music” issue when Jason (as expected from a “loving husband”) comments, engages and supports the commentary – and is now directly attached to it, not seperate from it. (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jason-aldean-brittany-anti-biden-post/).
How people handle that is their own decision, whether they chose to consume artists works or not attend award shows. However, artists are not only (in)famous for their own work but also for the things in their orbit (spides, livers, scandals, Twitter accounts, groupies, band/staff members etc ) All a consequence of fame. Agree that Maren Morris has her share of drama (Highwaywomen mess, opening artist issues) and perhaps she doesn’t get the press coverage for that. But fair is fair – all of these are disquieting. Definitely not a good look on these people – and another challenge for the perception of country and its appeal. If you choose to take a stand, be aware of the ramifications.
September 28, 2022 @ 4:04 pm
Behind the scenes, incognito, lurking in the shadows…secretly plotting…
September 28, 2022 @ 4:36 pm
Thanks for the reply Trig.
Beyond the obvious drama aspects though, I’m also curious about the rest of what she said. Since Trump has the industry become more, for the lack of a better word, “problematic” or unwelcoming to outsiders? Or that there are two country musics (where she referenced Brandi Carlisle, of all people, no offense to Brandi Carlisle)?
Does this all just come down to marketing and/or lagging sales and/or Grammy nominations (a la Musgraves and might as well throw Mickey Guyton in there as well)?
My take: I love country music. And I don’t really have a side or a “team” in the culture wars. But just about every time I read or hear another “hot take” about what’s wrong with country music culture/history/etc…
Let’s just say, funny that people who support gun control keep shooting themselves in the foot (my attempt at a joke).
Thanks again.

This article nailed it. Morris doesn’t belong in country music. Neither viewpoints or her music is culturally country.

Just read today that she is posing topless with a cowboy hat on. These people do not handle the loss of fame well at all.

Posting topless? I saw the photo: 75k likes. What a depraved world.
Rollo’s Law (they always get naked) proved right again.

+1 for the Rollo reference.

Country Knight,
Ha ha. Like I said previously, she is an utter embarrassment.

I actually like her new song, it so positive and up beat, I think in these dark times we need a song like this. If a pop singer like jewel can do country, a country singer like Shania can do a pop album, for those who are whining and crying about this, she is a singer, how do singers grow? By stretching out into new territories, trying new things, do we remember when tammy wynette did the song MOO MOO LAND? look the song up on you tube. Yeah, the country community lost their minds, she wanted to grow as an artist and try something different, and she is still a country legend. Maybe this is a one time thing, maybe her next album will be country , maybe she wants to grow. I am willing to give her a chance, and wish her all the best where ever her musical adventures take her.

She was always a pop singer.

“Justified and Ancient” (not MOO MOO LAND) was a KLF song featuring guest vocals by Tammy Wynette. Tammy Wynette didn’t start making house music all of a sudden.

It also puts her at odds with pop music which has decided to go disco and house. I’m all for the do what you want but trying to win the 13 to 25 demo is a wasted move IMO.

Considering her core demographic has always been women and gay men. She’s clearly playing to her base with this song and video.

Well,Shania has roughly ten thousand times more talent than Yours Truly (though I write Country lyrics and sing some.)

I’m really showing my age

I’d rather listen to Walker Hayes doing UK drill rap covers than listen to this album. Shania was never country, and she would have never been anything without Mutt Lange.

Did you know that Wendy’s reheats their leftover unsold hamburgers and recycles them into their chili? Kind of like shanias music

I could not agree more with this review. Seems like she only wants to please her lgbt fanbase and enjoy the iconicity they gave to her and forgets why the great audience liked about her, that along with the beauty, had great mix of classic country music elements with catchy pop and rock. A big part of this was the genius musicality of Mutt Lange along with her that would be easy to follow the rules of what was done and in the new albums, at least make satisfy her general fans.
