Sturgill Simpson Maps Out 2018 Festival Schedule
This story has been updated.
As Sturgill Simpson told us during his now infamous live stream during the 2017 CMA Awards, do not expect a bunch of tour dates from him in 2018 as he focuses most of his efforts on recording new material and possibly producing some projects for others. But he did say, “We’re doing some festivals this year just to keep the chops up while I’m working in between . . .”
In the last few days Sturgill’s festival schedule has come more into focus as many of music’s major gatherings announce their lineups now that the Holidays are in the rear view and folks are mapping out their 2018. These may be your only opportunities to see Sturgill in 2018 if you’re so inclined, so start planning now.
Though when asked, Sturgill Simpson said he might not share stages with folks like Cody Jinks again, that’s exactly what he’ll do when the two fiercely independent artists play on St. Patrick’s Day at the Pot of Gold Music Festival in Chandler, Arizona on March 17th. Also on the bill that day are St. Paul and the Broken Bones, The Infamous Stringdusters, with Phil Lesh headlining. For those who know, Chandler is the Phoenix suburb where Waylon Jennings once lived, and he was laid to rest in nearby Mesa.
Then after playing a standalone performance at the Radio City Music Hall in New York on April 13th with close friend John Prine, Sturgill will be playing the Sweetwater 420 Fest in Atlanta, GA at the Centennial Olympic Park. As the fest’s name implies, it’s being held on 4/20. Other participants include the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Andres Osborne.
Sturgill Simpson has also been announced as a participant in the 2018 Bonnaroo Festival in rural Tennessee. “I’m playing Bonnaroo this year on my 40th birthday…and making the boys dress up like The Rockafire Explosion Showbiz Pizza band,” Sturgill said on Twitter Tuesday (1-9). The Bonnaroo dates are from June 7th to 10th, with 51% percent of the proceeds going to LiveNation.
Simpson will also be a headliner of the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival along with the Sam Bush Band and Emmylou Harris. “Been waiting for this one…” Sturgill says about the fest taking place June 21st-24th in the picturesque mountains of Telluride, Colorado. Then on July 28th, he will appear at the EXpoNential Music Festival in Camden, New Jersey, with The War on Drugs, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Don’t be surprised if a few more festival slots materialize in the coming days and weeks for Sturgill Simpson in 2018, but it may not be smart to wait around for a full-blown tour because there may not be one, at least in the first half of the year.
Sturgill Simpson 2018 Touring Schedule (So Far):
• March 17 – Pot of Gold Music Festival – Chandler, AZ
• April 13th – Radio City Music Hall – New York, NY
• April 20th – Sweetwater Music Fest – Atlanta, Georgia
• June 7th-10th – Bonnaroo Music Festival – Manchester, Tennessee
• June 21st-24th – Telluride Bluegrass Festival – Telluride, CO
• July 28th – EXpoNential Music Festival – Camden, New Jersey

No, I was mostly referring to his recent declaration that he’s done making country music. It’s one thing to ve insulted by a musician and put up with it because you like the music. There can ve a trade off there. But I’m certainlynot going to suffer through his insults to hear him NOT do country music.

Well, that could have been worse. For me, it would be like if Ricky Skaggs was to give up bluegrass and then pull a Rod Stewart, doing faithful American Songbook covers.

This whole “Sturgill said he is done with country music” thing is overblown and inaccurate. He never said that he is done, and in fact, said that he will likely do a “hard country” album again someday when the time is right. Not to mention that he would like to do a traditional bluegrass album. Let’s not forget that his solo career is still basically in its infancy, given that he got going so late in life. It doesn’t seem that way because he has been so incredibly productive with his album output over the past 4 years, but its the truth.

His next will be album #4 in what he claimed would be a 5 album career. Curious to see which road he follows.
jtrpdx
January 10, 2018 @ 12:33 pm
My prediction is that the whole 5 album thing is yet another example of Sturgill toying with people and having fun with his image of being a crazy eccentric (see the full quote…it is pretty out there). Even if he is viewing his first 5 solo albums as all fitting together in some way, I doubt he will quit after 5. He also stated in that same “interview” that “Someday I’ll wake up and feel like making a hard country record again, just that ain’t tomorrow. And that’s just me being honest.”. Also, he talked about wanting to do a bluegrass record someday in collaboration with some of the Kentucky bluegrass greats.
Gina
January 10, 2018 @ 1:09 pm
Yeah, he’s totally not stopping at 5. I think he said that before he was nominated for a Grammy. It’s also the whole man of mystery thing. He’s the Jackie Kennedy of music, which is a good thing. Make yourself rare. As for being done with country, his last album was country, it was just big country.
scott
January 10, 2018 @ 1:20 pm
Never really expected he’d bag it after 5. But, if he was/is serious about it, the next(last?) 2 albums should be something. Not exactly sure what, but…

It remains to be seen if he picks up enough hipsters, NPR-types, EMP fans, and other assorted rabble to make up for the country fans he is losing. Most people who I know, who were fans of the first two albums, have soured on him, not just because of the shitty music, but because he is such a progressive, PC douche. Court favor with the fashionable crowd, just don’t expect your original fan base to catch you on your way down. Build the wall.

“but because he is such a progressive, PC douche.”
calling Sturgill a “PC douche” is classic, because the way Sturgill described all Trump supporters was the least PC way he could have gone about doing. He could have said “not everyone is a bigot, and there are good people who support Trump, good policies etc”. That would have been the “PC” way
instead he did it the straightforward, non-PC way, and since that insulted people, the retort is he is a progressive PC douche”
makes no sense
RD
January 10, 2018 @ 11:51 am
Being stridently anti-Trump places you in the vanguard of the progressive PC left. It doesn’t matter if you use coarse language, physically assault people, agitate for genocide, etc., you are justified and glorified, as long as you hate Trump, middle America, traditional American culture, etc. PC only goes one way. If you are smashing fascists, anything goes.

Spot on Gina. As a registered republican who leans libertarian, I can assure you RD that thinking trump is a complete buffoon is commonplace among people on the “right” who can think for themselves. Also, what a crock to lump Trump in with “middle America, traditional American culture, etc.”. Trump is nothing more than a big city, celebrity promoter imbecile who could care less about “middle America”….and who has been a democrat his whole life up until about 2 years ago. Yes he talked a big load of crap about the blue collar folk in his campaign, but that was only because he was told (rightfully so) that pandering to that vote was his best shot at winning the primary and election.

It was also the response to a question when he told people to ask him anything and he would respond honestly and off the cuff. I frankly think Sturgill was too harsh. There are better ways to broach these subjects and attempt to sway people to your side. But as you point out, it was passing moment in a much bigger event. It’s not like Sturgill called a press conference to announce he hated Trump, as if he needed to say it for us to know it in the first place.

Given your past comments about women, etc., it is pretty safe to assume that you surround yourself with some real gems of human beings. I wouldn’t take the subset of your narrow-minded friends as evidence of him losing fans left and right. And that is complete BS about his “original fan base” being some grizzled, redneck crowd. His original fan base was those with their ear to the ground when it comes to discovering good, independent music. He only caught on much later with the more mainstream, “true country” crowd that you have made up in your head as being the majority of his fans.

I love the arguments for and against Sturgill. I will put in my two cents even though nobody cares. His music is okay. As for not being country I can live with it. I just feel like this site being Saving Country Music maybe the focus should change. As a whole Texas country is what will save country music. Artists like Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers Band,Turnpike Troubadours and William Clark Green. I know Texas country has its problems but as a whole it is where the real country is at. Not in Americana music. I just feel so much time is spent on Sturgill and Isabell who are not country and not enough time spent on the artists who are still trying to keep country alive.

I appreciate the feedback Ronald. Ultimately, posting tour dates doesn’t take a lot of time compared to writing an album review, for example, so it’s not like something was bumped to post about Sturgill and Isbell’s live shows. I wasn’t going to post anything about Sturgill since this isn’t a proper tour, but just more a collection of festival dates. But since he deleted his Facebook page, I felt comelled to make sure those folks got the info. Also Sturgill is one of those artists who I’ve covered truly from the very beginning of his career, so it’s continuing a narrative no matter where his music might head.
I try to cover as much of everything as I can, and try to pick the best of the respective scenes as opposed to zeroing in on one. Turnpike Troubadours were the SCM Artist of the Year in 2017 and received tremendous amount of coverage throughout the year. Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers Band, and William Clark Green all haven’t released new records for a couple of years now, and so that’s the reason coverage on them has been light lately. But all three are planning big 2018 releases, so I’m sure they’ll work their way into the mix a lot more in the coming months.

I don’t get these festivals. All the hassle and you get 20, 30 minutes of the artist you want to see. I’ll support whatever events Willie does – Farm Aid (the most you get is 45 minutes from the headliners – Willie, Young, Mellencamp, Matthews) or Outlaw Fest (maybe an hour from the headliners), otherwise I wait to see my favorite artist on their own dime.
I don’t even go see my favorite artists on co-headling shows anymore. Drive-by Truckers (one of my favorites) are coming through but in the co-headling spot for Tedeschi Trucks Band – I’ll pass.
RD
January 10, 2018 @ 9:47 am
I saw Farm Aid in Columbus, OH a while back. I was disappointed by how short the sets were for the headliners. Too much Sheryl Crow, not enough Willie. Too much Dave Matthews, not enough John Mellencamp. It was a waste of time and money.

We go every year and every year we say it will be the last. But, it’s such a great cause. I think the most important cause. So, we’ll go as long as Willie is around. But, usually – especially if you attend it at a curfew venue – there’s disappointment.

My 2 cents: Sturgill is a once in generation talent. To me, that’s unarguable. We’re fortunate that folk like him even come around anymore. His first two albums rocked me hard. Honestly, though, the third Grammy winning album…not for me. Didn’t move me. But he produced himself for the first time and like anybody standing on the street, has a sound he’s trying to get to. There’s no way in hell I’m giving up but I’m prepared not to like his 4th album. (And fairly certain he’ll make it anyway.) How about we give the guy a pat on the back for being able to “only do festivals” this year. That means he can afford to do so. We all know the financials today. There ain’t a ton coming from record sales or streaming. He’s doing okay, we’re being told. And that’s a pretty damn good thing.

People like to talk about Sturgil trying to pick up a “hipster” audience but – based on the musical tone of his last tour and some of the new bookings – it seems like he’s more likely to become part of the whole jam band world. Makes sense (even though I can’t personally get into most of that stuff) – open-minded, loyal fans and a good touring base.

It will be interesting to see where he goes with the lineup in the future. From some of his recent quotes from onstage during the last tour, I get the feeling that this slimmed down jam band vibe was designed to be a short lived, experimental and fun thing that he brought out for the short 2017 tour that he put together last minute after winning the grammy. Will be fun to see what he does beyond 2018, as I’m guessing that he will keep the same lineup for these festival dates. Will be interesting to see if he changes it up at all for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and what he does for the Prine date.

I’m glad somebody came along and did what a lot of people probably wish I was still doing. But my head is just headed in a completely different direction artistically. But I’m super proud of what guys like him and Whitey Morgan, and Jason Boland and Jason Eady, and Tyler (Childers) and all them are doing. I kind of feel like my work is done in that realm. Once you sacrifice a decade of your life, personal wealth and family life, and write over 4,400 articles, then I’ll listen to you and others about what I should or shouldn’t be doing. I LOVE feedback, including critical feedback, but the “it’s not saving country music” mantra is Facebook bullshit. Sturgill Simpson helped revolutionize modern country music, and regardless of how “country” his music is today or who he voted for President, it is a very relevant topic to bring his name up. Y’all sure were fine with it after he released “High Top Mountain” and “Metamodern Sounds,” and he’ll be playing many songs from those records when he takes the stage at these festivals. Don’t want to read it? Then don’t fucking read it. I’m typing until 2 a.m. to try and offer all kinds of material for folks to read. I was the first person to ever write about Sturgill, the first to interview him, the first to put my name behind him, and I will continue to cover him if I so choose. And by the way, you also won’t find a more harsh critic of Sturgill Simpson in print than me.

OBVIOUSLY, you can and will write whatever you want. And we’ll continue to complain about what we don’t like.
Sturgill Simpson didn’t help to revolutionize jack freaking crap, but you have every right to keep repeating that.

Such a stupid comment, Ajax. Where did Sturgill say he wasn’t proud of the music he has made?

That logo, with “Sturgill Simpson” in flames, is super edgy. Just like everything Sturgill does, just totally edgy man. This guy is the definition of hip.

He sure seems to occupy a lot of your attention, Honky. You know, for being such “trash”.

I wonder if he’ll play Newport, seeing as he’s in NJ that same weekend?

His set at Newport a couple years ago was fabulous

In lieu of trumpets and saxophones, Sturgill Simpson should use cow bells, erhu, sitar, and flute-of-phones on his next album to give fans an existential experience.

I’m sure that would really get you going, LIl Peter. You and Honky could do some intimate hot yoga together while listening to it, and then return to your basements and spend all day commenting online about how you secretly hate Sturgill. (Yet you can’t stop talking about him).
