[Updated] Sturgill Simpson Recorded New Music in Dan Auerbach Studio

UPDATE: According to a post on the official Johnny Blue Skies Instagram account, reporting from The Tennessean that Sturgill Simpson and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys had collaborated, or were planning to collaborate on new music in 2026 is “Fake News.” Instead, Simpson simply recorded in Auerbach’s new studio in Nashville recently, and the music is likely to come out at some point in 2026.
In an article published by The Tennessean on December 30th, the Nashville newspaper stated in a profile on Dan Auerbach, “And in 2026, Auerbach’s got work on the horizon with Sturgill Simpson.”
But the Johnny Blue Skies post states, “Although it probably wouldn’t suck, Dan Auerback and Johnny B & The DC’s have not worked together. But the band did hi-jack and pop the cherry sh-t out of his new studio months back.”
Johnny Blue Skies is the current stage name for Sturgill Simpson.
The Instagram post also included a picture of Johnny Blue Skies (Sturgill) in the studio.

For context and transparency, the original article is included in full below.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE:
It looks like Sturgill Simpson, or “Johnny Blue Skies” as he goes by these days will likely have new music in 2026. And according to the singer and guitarist for The Black Keys, Dan Auerbach, don’t be surprised if he’s involved in some capacity.
Auerbach is up for Producer of the Year at the upcoming Grammy Awards on February 1st. Along with his Black Keys work, he’s a prolific producer, working with Early James, Robert Finley, Jermie Albino, and more over the last year or so. He says that being able to support himself through the Black Keys allows him to work with artists the don’t necessarily represent a financial boon to him.
“It allows me to work on stuff I personally love, and it can be an artist who has no followers or an old established artist,” Auerbach said to The Tennessean recently. “I think what we do here is very boutique and very grassroots in a way.”
But one artists that he says he’s working with would definitely be a big deal. Later in the interview, it casually slips out, “And in 2026, Auerbach’s got work on the horizon with Sturgill Simpson.” [Editor’s note: This information has been clarified by Simpson who said he simply recorded new music in Auerbach’s new studio.]
We don’t know what that work is just yet. But we do know that back in September when Simpson was performing at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, he said in a rather colorful burst of language,
“Fu-k it, I’ll tell you. Just so you guys know, we’re already gearing up. You ain’t ready, but we’re going to give it to you anyway. We just wrapped up a nice little … a new record… in the can. And for all the record labels out there acting like record labels that want to fu-k around, f-ck around. Find out. I just want to make America fu-k again!”
Sturgill Simpson or “Johnny Blue Skies” also recently started (or restarted) an Instagram account, with the last post reiterating “There is no STU, only JBS.”
Is the Dan Auerbach collaboration part of the same Johnny Blue Skies album Sturgill referenced at Red Rocks? Will it be a new studio session for 2026? Will Auerbach be acting in the capacity as producer or just a player? We’ll have to see.
Stay tuned.

Pretty surprising to hear. I would never have thought those two egos would mesh well, creatively.
Dan can help on the riff work though, especially if Stu is trying to do something different (to him, anyway).
January 5, 2026 @ 12:08 pm
You mean,
Stu“JBS” lol. Hope he’s okay psychologically and this renaming thing is just “paperwork” that gives him permission to feel unconstrained by his work under his own name and/or his loophole to keep making music past his weird, artificially imposed limit.January 5, 2026 @ 1:18 pm
Or maybe he’s just having a little fun.
January 5, 2026 @ 3:36 pm
It is strange how personally the people here take his pseudonym.
January 5, 2026 @ 4:31 pm
Right? It’s not that different from, say, Mike and the Moonpies changing their name to Silverada…
January 6, 2026 @ 1:59 am
It means nothing to me and I’m a big fan. As long as he keeps putting out great music and putting on great shows he can call himself whatever he wants.
January 5, 2026 @ 1:35 pm
Ha, I think he’s as psychologically sound as any artist – though that’s not saying much.
Being a fan and watching from afar because no one outside of family is really close to that man, I think the JBS moniker was a deliberate move to cull notoriety outside of “his crowd”.
Whereas anyone who is a casual fan of music might see “Sturgill Simpson” and be interested in the show, JBS might not have the same appeal among parties. You’re not going to associate JBS with High Top or Metamodern, and I think that’s very intentional.
I think the reception from the Good Look’n Tour bothered him, a lot. He thought people bought tickets to see “Sturgill Simpson”, and he found out many bought tickets to see Tyler Childers and a version of “Sturgill Simpson” that didn’t reflect who he is or what he wanted to do, so he buried the name when he decided to do something outside the country confines again.
The 10th anniversary artwork on Metamodern wasn’t a subtle metaphor. JBS is solo’ing arenas and working with Dan Auerbach. The horse has been out of the barn for a long time now.
January 6, 2026 @ 12:27 pm
I mean I don’t know him personally but Auerbach doesn’t seem like much of an ego to me.
January 7, 2026 @ 8:02 am
I’m close to some people who were close to that band and the egos there are monstrous.
January 5, 2026 @ 12:22 pm
Also in The Tennessean article: “It’s about time he and Sierra Ferrell get together for a record too, Auerbach said.” 👀
January 5, 2026 @ 12:29 pm
Yeah, but there are a LOT of producers who want to work with Sierra Ferrell, including Sturgill Simpson. She turned Sturg down for her first album.
January 5, 2026 @ 5:39 pm
According to someone I know who would definitely know the word behind the curtain is that her label guys at the time contacted him and he really wanted to work with her but wanted to use his regular A-team session guys and she wanted to use east Nashville pickers. Apparently she also wanted him to co-produce with someone he did not think he would sonically pair well with so he said “nope not for me” and passed and she’s been salty about it since. I also heard that the story Billy Strings has told about turning down cutting grass is only the part of the story that makes him look good. As I heard it he reached out asking if he could swing by and play on the album when they were recording Volume 1 and was told they already had a full house but then Sturgill apparently felt bad about it and reached out months later when they were cutting volume 2 and that’s when Billy said he already had a fishing trip planned. These young artists putting revisionist half versions of the story out there publicly to paint themselves in a better light or to give the impression they said no gives off serious butt hurt vibes and says even more than JBS never saying anything.
January 6, 2026 @ 2:07 pm
Sturgill Simpson wanted to produce Sierra Ferrell’s first record on Rounder. Sturgill Simpson did not produce Sierra Ferrell’s first record on Rounder. I’ve talked to the label about this. I’ve talked to the producers about this. I was in the room when these decisions were happening. I was at the AmericanaFest showcase where Sierra Ferrell was debuted and Sturgill was standing stage side.
None of this is a slight on Sturgill Simpson whatsoever, and I don’t think Sierra Ferrell is using it to some how grandstand against Sturgill. I don’t know that she’s ever even addressed it publicly, and is certainly not looking to create any drama from the situation. It just didn’t work out. The only person attempting to stir drama here is you.
Ditto with Billy Strings.

The Artist Formerly Known as Sturgill Simpson. Hahaha. Maybe eventually just a symbol? Worked for Prince.
So…with that statement about no more Stu, and noting that festival posters last year which gave Johnny Blue Skies top billing all came with parentheses or asterisks that clearly said ” Sturgill Simpson” , can we assume that in 2026, all such ads/posters will only now list JBS with no qualifier?
January 5, 2026 @ 12:33 pm
If I were to guess, we’ll still probably see Sturgill’s name on posters. The amount of money he gets for a festival appearance pretty much guarantees that. They’re paying him to draw, and Sturgill Simpson draws better than Johnny Blue Skies.
Festival posters, and who is placed where (and how) is a HUGE deal behind the scenes. Lots of jockeying, lots of politicking. Because ultimately, they really define what artists are on top, in the middle of the pack, and on the bottom.
January 5, 2026 @ 12:38 pm
This is a power move directed at Shooter Jennings.
January 5, 2026 @ 3:22 pm
Jack White, also. After all, Dan and him have a history…
January 5, 2026 @ 4:00 pm
This article made me listen to the. latest Black Key appearance on Rogan. Rogan talked a little shit about Jack White pretty early in the interview. Auerbach nor the dummer bit though. I was curious if there was a history. I’ll google it.
Has Jack White produced any country (not that I expect Sturgill’s record to be that country) aside from Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson?
January 5, 2026 @ 4:28 pm
Jack White also produced a Dwight Yoakam single. Would love to see him do another project like he did with Lynn and Jackson.
Many of his own albums — whether solo, the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, etc. — have country songs on them.
January 5, 2026 @ 5:02 pm
What would be an album with country songs on them?
January 6, 2026 @ 11:48 am
Get Behind Me Satan:
“I’m Lonely (But I Ain’t That Lonely Yet)”
Country Song
“Little Ghost”
Country Song
“Forever For Her (Is Over For Me)”
Country Song – ish
Icky Thump:
“You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As Your Told)”
Production is rock, but by the time you get the chorus, it’s a country song
“Effect and Cause”
Country Song
January 6, 2026 @ 2:49 pm
Cool. Thank you!
January 5, 2026 @ 8:28 pm
Why? He can’t produce everybody.
January 5, 2026 @ 1:24 pm
As long as he gets back out there tearing up stages I’ll be happy. Dan is a good producer although not a fan of all of his production work. I do love that Dr John album “Locked Down” he produced back in 2012. I saw them play it live with a band that Dan put together.
January 5, 2026 @ 6:47 pm
Johnny Blue Skies responds on Instagram:
“FAKE NEWS!!
ALTHOUGH IT PROLLY WOULDN’T SUCK, DAN AUERBACH AND JOHNNY B & THE DC’S HAVE NOT WORKED TOGETHER…
BUT THE BAND DID HI-JACK AND POP THE CHERRY SHIT OUT OF HIS NEW STUDIO MONTHS BACK”

Story has been updated.
January 5, 2026 @ 9:56 pm
JBS needs to be on the Saving Adult Contemporary Music website, not this one. You guys still puffing his weiner cause of Metamodern seem to think everything he makes is gold. It ain’t. It’s mostly shit.
January 6, 2026 @ 1:33 pm
No kidding. JBS was boring as hell. To paraphrase buddy in Heartworn Highways: “I ain’t afraid to say it, Sturgill Simpson done shot his wad.”
January 6, 2026 @ 2:16 pm
I guess I’ll just scooter my blues away.
January 7, 2026 @ 1:10 am
Anyword on the “live” album that was supposed to be issued on the back of the last tour?
January 7, 2026 @ 8:00 am
I haven’t heard anything about it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not in the pipeline.
January 7, 2026 @ 9:42 am
So Sturgill Simpson simply booked studio time at Dan Auerbach’s studio – that’s it. Case closed.
Despite being all over the place musically and having some questionable personality issues, I’ll always make time for Sturgill’s work. He really hasn’t let me down since day one – unlike Tyler Childers and other guys in that circle who lost the plot long ago.
Regarding Dan Auerbach, I think he lost the plot musically a while back too. I think he’s great at making and producing two-minute retro-rock songs that work for radio and commercials, but I don’t think of him as an artist or musician anymore. To me, Sturgill is still very much an artist and musician. Can’t wait to hear what he’s got cookin’.
February 8, 2026 @ 11:10 am
Ahaha, you need to check your head, Tex. Dan is one of the best musical minds of 21 century with TBK, his solo work, The Arcs and his production credits for numerous artists. 31 grammy nominations in total with 5 for producer of the year – thats all you need to know, clown!
