The 2023 ACM Awards LIVE Blog

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the 2022 Academy of Country Music Awards LIVE Blog conducted by Saving Country Music.
Feel free to follow along as we razz performers for their bad music, poke fun of people for poor style decisions, and maybe give some praise for the good stuff that transpires as well. This is all unscripted, so apologies ahead of time for syntax errors, and make sure to bring a thick skin. This is all in good fun.

9:23 – Your first reaction to the 2023 ACM Awards is that it was NOT the 2022 CMA Awards, where you felt like country music really tried to turn over a new leaf, honor legends and the roots of the music, and put together a presentation that was relevant to everyone in country.
The 2023 ACMs felt forced and contrived, a little disjointed at times, too rushed without the aid of commercial breaks, and straining to make some sort of cohesive expression. The first 1/3rd of the presentation for everyone who taped it was downright terrible. Just skip it. But Miranda Lambert’s “Carousel” saved the day, along with very strong performances from Ashley McBryde and the “Lindeville” crew, The War & Treaty, Cody Johnson, and a couple others.
The big winner of the night once again is Lainey Wilson with Album of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. She is the future of women in country music, and that’s a future we can be proud of. And congratulations to Chris Stapleton, who was bound to win an Entertainer of the Year award once, and finally did. It’s hard to not be happy for him as his chances at winning it again might be diminishing in the coming years with so many major stars being launched.
Where the CMAs honored the past and present, the CMTs went woke, the ACMs just kind of came and went. It lacked some star power, and the “moments” were fleeting. It could have been worse, but these days sometimes bad is better than forgettable.
9:10 – Thanks everyone for following along! Thanks to all the commenters below! Gonna compose some final thoughts, run down the winners, and get out of here.
9:09 – Pretty sure Dolly was lip syncing in spots. But she’s Dolly.
9:07 – Dolly Rock: Queen’s “We Will Rock You” beat,” with a bit of Gospel, mixed with some fire and brimstone.
9:06 – “Don’t get me started on politics. They wouldn’t know the truth if it bit ’em in the ass.”

9:04 – Here we go, Dolly Rock!
9:03 – “By any imaginable metric, I don’t deserve this. But thank you.”
Stapleton gets shake voice during his speech. This is Stapleton’s FIRST Entertainer of the Year win in a career full of awards.
9:01 – WINNER – The 2023 ACM for Entertainer of the Year goes to Chris Stapleton.
8:59 – Not a bad performance from Jordan Davis. I just don’t get why that, and why there?
8:57 – How did the generic-ass Jordan Davis get this prime real estate right at the end of the presentation? Just one of the many nameless country males with a #1 that nobody can remember.
8:55 – Man, Lainey Wilson just had one hell of a rhyme at the end of her acceptance speech. Couldn’t type it all out here. She’s clearly the big winner tonight.
8:50 – WINNER – The 2023 ACM Album of the Year is “Bell Bottom Country” by Lainey Wilson.
8:48 – Lainey Wilson’s “Grease” is a perfect guilty pleasure, and she’s killing it here.
Still, it would have been cool to see her sing a country song here. This presentation needs more country songs.
8:45 – Not sure how I feel about that Jelly Roll / Lainey Wilson performance. Folks that write off Jelly Roll without a thought are missing that he’s got something people connect with. But I’m not sure that performance was the best example.
8:43 – Jelly Roll takes the stage. The stage groans.
8:42 – 1,000 think pieces just got written. I can’t wait to read what this means about America on The Daily Beast.
8:40 – WINNER – The ACM for Male Artist of the Year is Morgan Wallen.
8:37 – It’s like every presentation in country is contractually obligated to include Bobby Bones, and they just interject him into stuff without any need. He’s such a country music boner kill.
8:36 – You tell ’em ladies! Great performance from Lindeville.
8:32 – Give credit to the ACMs for featuring Ashley McBride and “Bonfire at Tina’s.” Amazing album, great song, but barely sold at all.
Brandy Clark, Caylee Hammack, and Pillbox Patti on the stage with Ashley.
This isn’t exactly a “prime time” song, but they’re letting it roll. That’s one of the benefits of streaming. No censors.
8:30 – And here comes Jason Aldean with his generic arena rock to ruin the buzz.
8:29 – Hard to not be happy for Lainey. Deserved.
8:28 – “I just met Dolly Parton!” says Lainey Wilson. “For all of the little girls out there, this stands for hard work. If you’re gonna be a dreamer, you’ve got to be a do-er.”
8:26 – WINNER – The ACM for Female Artist of the Year goes to Lainey Wilson.
8:25 – Wow, excellent a capella performance from Dolly Parton.
But is THAT the In Memoriam segment? You can’t even scroll some names on the screen while Dolly was singing?
8:23 – Man the pauses are pregnant in these dialogues.
8:22 – The War and Treaty just behind Miranda for the performance of the night.
8:20 – I probably would have selected “Lover’s Game” or “Yesterday’s Burn” for this performance from The War & Treaty. But one of the great things about them is that they can sing just about anything and make it rise.
8:18 – The War & Treaty!
8:16 – Well, at least Morgan Wallen’s voice is shot so we don’t have to suffer through that .
8:15 – You know, I’m hard on Bobby Bones, but he really is the greatest DJ in country music. Just ask him.
8:14 – By the way, Ed Sheeran just dropped a quote today that he wants to go country. So we have that to deal with at some point.
8:13 – Nothing against Ed Sheeran. Inoffensive, I guess. Pairs well with Luke Combs in that respect, like pasta and red wine. Just didn’t do much for me.
8:11 – Why does this remind me of a Marvin Gaye song?
8:09 – Is there a new Lord of the Rings installment on the way to cross promote? What’s up with the Hobbit on stage?
8:07 – Luke Combs gives you so little to criticize. Seems just like a good ol’ dude. But he also gives you little to hype.
8:05 – Another hour of this shit. Thanks for following along!
8:04 – Well shit. At least it wasn’t that Cole Swindell song.
8:03 – WINNER – The ACM for Musical Event of the Year goes to Hardee’s feat. Lainey Wilson “Wait in the Truck.”
8:01 – Oh how embarrassing. Mickey Guyton forgot her shirt backstage.
8:00 – Hailey’s fiddle player is super badass. She killed it when I saw her live.
7:59 – Hailey Whitters! Hard to not root for her. Help keep the momentum going, Hailey!
7:58 – “I don’t know what’s going on, y’all” — Cole Swindell
Neither do we, Cole. Neither do we.
7:57 – WINNER – The ACM Single of the Year is “She Had Me At Heads Carolina” – Cole Swindell
7:55 – Miranda Lambert just turned in the performance of the ACMs. Classy, understated, emotional without being overly sentimental. THAT’s how you deliver a song, and a “moment.”
7:51 – Great song choice by Miranda Lambert with “Carousel.” This could be good. Gonna shut up and listen.
7:49 – Man, even when these ACMs go classic country, there’s just something that’s off. What’s the relevant tie-in to this Cody Johnson performance. Willie’s birthday? This thing just feels like it has no pulse. It’s trying too hard.
7:48 – Cody Johnson singing “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies”!
7:47 – Good gosh Cody Johnson, please save us from this mess!
7:46 – Good to see Willie, and good to see Willie not legitimize this mess with his actual presence.
7:45 – Dolly’s sex jokes are making never-offensive Garth Brooks feel uncomfortable.
7:44 – OOh, speaking of Zach Bryan, just saw him behind Keith Urbane, looking bored as hell.
7:43 – Not against Bailey Zimmerman. I just don’t know what the appeal is here. Organic rise, but generic, mainstream sound.
7:41 – Bailey Zimmerman is the rich kid’s Zach Bryan.
7:40 – Breland’s got so much nothing. He reminds me of a bug on a windshield.
7:39 – About the only thing that could make this ACM Awards worse would be an appearance from Bobby Bones.
And ladies and gentlemen ….
7:37 – What the fuck is this Old Dominion douchebag blathering about? It was like he was trying to make a political statement, but he didn’t have the balls to.
7:36 – WINNER – The ACM for Vocal Group of the Year goes to Old Dominion. Of course.
7:34 – Wow, this is just terrible. Pitchy, uncool. The exact opposite of what Hardy’s anti-star appeal is all about.
This is not going well folks!
7:32 – Wow, HORRIBLE song selection from Hardee’s. “Wrong Side of the Truck Bed” is arguably one of the worst songs from his new album. No energy here either.
7:31 – John Osborne looks like a kokopelli threw up on him.
7:30 – WINNER – The ACM for Vocal Duo of the Year goes to Brothers Osborne. Because of course it does.
7:28 – Dustin Lynch sucks.
7:26 – The 2nd stage on this presentation has remarkably worse audio than the first. It’s really a shame, because they’re running through Trisha’s hits.
7:25 – Trisha Yearwood!
7:24 – Throw a fiddle in there all you want, Kane. It doesn’t make up for the keytaur and head bangs. Bleh!
7:23 – Wow, this is NOT the CMAs. They’re leaving heavy on the younguns, and the lightweights. Is this Kane Brown supposed to be a “hit”? It just feels like the latest track gerrymandered to #1 by the industry.
7:22 – Kane Brown got an extended intro because he was lost backstage.
7:20 – Dude, the SONG OF THE YEAR is a rehash. WTF?
Go listen to the original, America.
7:19 – WINNER – The ACM for Song of the Year goes to “She Had Me At Heads Carolina” – Cole Swindell
7:15 – Oh great, Dak Prescott. Get the Heimlich ready could he could choke at any time.
7:14 – This “Heads Carolina, Tails California” performance with Schwindell and Jo Dee has all the energy of last year’s hit.
7:13 – You know you’re watching the ACM Awards when the audio of live performances is completely washed out.
7:12 – Gotta love Dolly for not knowing how to pronounce no name “Cole Schwindell.”
7:10 – I can tell the comedy writers are on strike from this monologue.
7:07 – At least Garth is naming off some country legends here. First time a lot of folks have ever heard these names.
Wow, he even said Randy Travis “saved country music.” I won’t argue.
7:06 – If you take a shot every time Garth Brooks acts insincere, you’ll be drunk before they hand out the first award.
7:04 – Waylon is rolling over in his grave at the idea of Keith Urban playing a knock-off of his leather clad guitar Urban scarffed off of eBay.
Oh, and now he’s doing the Peter Frampton vocal guitar things. Screw this dude.
7:03 – Appreciate folks, they’re holding this thing at the Dallas Cowboys practice facility because last year there were more empty seats than at a Breland concert.
7:02 – Man, Keith Urban looks so great at 55 years old, he could be the model on a Bud Light bottle.
7:01 -Thankfully, this thing is only two hours. Unfortunately though, there’s no commercials to catch my breath!
7:00 – Here we go!
6:55 – Due to the allegations of rape against Jimmie Allen today, he’s being replaced in the performance lineup tonight by Nelly.
6:50 – Ashley Gorley won for Songwriter of the Year in an effort by the country music industry to support women. Many in the country music industry were disappointed to find out later that Ashley Gorley is actually a man.
6:47 – Early ACM Award Winners:
New Male Artist of the Year – Zach Bryan
New Female Artist of the Year – Hailey Whitters
Songwriter of the Year – Ashley Gorley
Artist-Songwriter of the Year – Hardee’s
Visual Media of the Year – Hardee’s feat. Lainey Wilson – “Wait in the Truck”

Kicking off with KEITH URBAN? Man the ACMs are so far behind the CMAs
May 12, 2023 @ 6:35 am
ACM last night-not CMA’s, Keith was hot-in Texas sang his hit “Texas Time”, breaking records-55 hits so far!!!!!
May 11, 2023 @ 5:12 pm
That threesome joke was so cringe
May 11, 2023 @ 5:14 pm
It was nice to see Jo Dee at the CMAs, but this is just a repeat.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:16 pm
Exactly.
May 12, 2023 @ 6:38 am
can’t sing-not young anymore, need to lose weight
May 12, 2023 @ 12:32 pm
Her weight is just fine – so is her voice.
May 22, 2023 @ 5:26 pm
She can sing you’re just jealous or crazy cuz you got to be one of the two to say any of those things about her.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:18 pm
JoDee showing up Cole Schwinndell without even trying.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:48 pm
I saw Cole Swindell once … a joke. How can someone with absolutely no talent still be making music? A lite Luke Bryan (and that’s not good????) Nashville 2023 needs to start over- new label execs, new producers, writers, talent that understand where country came from…
May 11, 2023 @ 8:29 pm
“She’s a 90’s country fan, like I am….” Is one of the worst country lyrics ever.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:19 pm
This BS ripoff winning song of the year is an absolute travesty
May 11, 2023 @ 5:22 pm
Mute button getting a workout tonight.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:22 pm
This has been rough so far. The only bright spot was seeing Randy Travis in the crowd
May 11, 2023 @ 5:23 pm
Thank God that Kane didn’t sing that travesty is Thank God.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:24 pm
Why can’t we just have Jo Dee sing the whole original song. Sigh.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:26 pm
How long are we gonna have to wait for the first actual country performance?
May 11, 2023 @ 5:27 pm
Trisha just upstaged Carley with her first verse.
May 12, 2023 @ 7:00 am
Trisha-only on show because of Garth, old, old songs
May 22, 2023 @ 5:29 pm
Amen
May 11, 2023 @ 5:28 pm
At least we got Trisha Yearwood
May 11, 2023 @ 5:28 pm
A bright spot in the mainstream is Miss Carly Pearce, and such a better pairing tonight than whatever that was when they put her with Gwen Steffani. I love Trish’s voice too! Keep the 90 stars a coming!
May 11, 2023 @ 5:30 pm
I really want to know how song of the year – for song writing- went to a remake.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:31 pm
At this point I’m watching so I can fully enjoy your live blog….
May 11, 2023 @ 5:31 pm
Man the voters love Brothers Osborne almost as much as they love Miranda
May 11, 2023 @ 5:34 pm
We really hate Hardy right.
May 12, 2023 @ 7:03 am
worst performance ever, not rock awards tonight, look stupid, electricity in hair-sofunny, mostly shout
May 11, 2023 @ 5:34 pm
Has Ed performed yet
May 11, 2023 @ 5:36 pm
Miranda who?
May 11, 2023 @ 5:37 pm
How in the FUCK does Old Dominion keep winning awards???
May 11, 2023 @ 7:24 pm
Because the group/band scene is nearly as barren now as the duo scene became after Brooks & Dunn retired. Radio doesn’t like Midland. ZBB reminds me of the Dave Matthews Band: technically superior but the music lacks any semblance of substance or excitement. OD makes pleasant MOR country that the soccer mom demo (coveted by advertisers) loves, making them the safe choice for this award every year. (Full disclosure: I kind of liked “No Hard Feelings.” So kill me.)
May 11, 2023 @ 9:56 pm
They really need to combine the group/duo category into one.
May 12, 2023 @ 4:18 am
Even then, they’d still have trouble coming up with credible nominees. There are few real duos right now. The labels prefer to just toss two artists together — sometimes two superstars, sometimes a superstar and a new face they’re looking to give a push — and let the singles sell solo music by both halves of the duo. As for bands, no idea. There are certainly plenty of them outside the mainstream but outside of OD and ZBB the concept seems dead in the water right now on radio.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:37 pm
Nelly? SMH….
May 11, 2023 @ 5:37 pm
Hardy has a lot of good songs. The one he just sang live….isn’t one of them.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:39 pm
Terrible song selection. Makes no sense.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:52 pm
It’s his new single
May 11, 2023 @ 7:38 pm
Even worse.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:38 pm
Old dominion- the ambassadors for DoucheBro suits. The douchier the better
May 11, 2023 @ 5:39 pm
This is shamefully awful
May 11, 2023 @ 5:46 pm
I flew by the show by just so can laugh at comments in real time. I vomited on my chair and decided watching that crap is not worth cleaning up more puke. I’m glad The Hag and many others are not alive to see this pathetic display
May 11, 2023 @ 5:48 pm
Thanks for doing this Trig so I don’t have to watch. Besides Battle Bots is on…..
May 11, 2023 @ 5:49 pm
Thank God for Cody Johnson
May 11, 2023 @ 5:50 pm
Cody Johnson singing the best country song of all time while making it his own and sound effortless and there was steel guitar and great Melodies
May 11, 2023 @ 5:54 pm
Miranda does a great ballad but I would’ve killed to see Waxahachie live!
May 11, 2023 @ 5:56 pm
Miranda Lambert just had the best performance of the night; to hear an actual song with actual songwriting is mind-blowing.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:57 pm
I’m so fucking sick of the same song winning both song and single of the year. Voters just don’t give a shit
May 11, 2023 @ 6:06 pm
Here here.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:58 pm
ITS NOT EVEN AN ORIGINAL SONG. What the hell
May 11, 2023 @ 5:58 pm
Cody and Miranda saved us.
May 11, 2023 @ 5:59 pm
Carousel by Miranda is a true country classic for the modern era. I’m so glad she picked it to sing and I hope it gets a proper roll out next. It might have been the best award show Miranda moment I’ve seen.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:59 pm
Miranda was boring and pitchy. Just because she’s twangy doesn’t make her a good country singer. What Miranda wore on the red carpet was trashy and cheap. Miranda still has no record label. Lainey Wilson was amazing. Now she can sing. Glad Lainey is winning now instead of Miranda. Go Lainey. Just love her.
May 11, 2023 @ 7:24 pm
I kinda agree. I know many overlook her pitchy singing because of the twang which she tends to overemphasize at times. It’s a good song though. But I’m such a fan of Ashley McBride it’s frustrating that she never gets awards. Very very happy about Lainey though.
May 11, 2023 @ 9:28 pm
My kids and I had a bet about how long it would take your to show up in the comment section to trash Miranda. You won my daughter a buck.
May 12, 2023 @ 10:30 am
Come on Cee Cee not everyone is a fan of her style of singing. There was a discussion on another forum regarding this. They said this song was the type of song you could tell when she’s off pitch. She does have that twang and not everyone likes that. Also Miranda is hit or miss on award shows. But knew she do well overall on the ACMs. They have always been good to her and she’s comfortable on that stage. She’s done this song with the same set in Vegas so it wasn’t new. As an Ashley McBride fan she’s always stellar-on award shows and in her concerts. And it’s frustrating to never see her get the award. (For herself). As I stated that is a good song and I’m sure it will get recognized down the road.
May 12, 2023 @ 10:47 am
Actually the bet should have been when was someone going to post a comment here trashing Gwen Stefani because KC beat my posted comment by hours. KC @ 5:28 didn’t even spell Gwen’s last name right. ???????? She wasn’t even at the awards show. Some people just can’t move on.
May 12, 2023 @ 2:11 pm
Truth Teller, for the record I’m not bashing Gwen. No Doubt was one of my first concerts before I could drive. I was and am a fan of her. I just didn’t think the pairing of Carly and Gwen was great. I think pairing her with Trisha was a much better fit. No harm, no foul.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:00 pm
Cody, Miranda, and now Hailey. Finally getting some good performances but it still doesn’t come close to the CMAs
May 11, 2023 @ 6:01 pm
Can we stop trying to make Mickey Guyton happen.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:14 pm
KC,
They have to now that Jimmie Allen’s off the rails.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:19 pm
Cab we direct it to War and Treaty or Chapel Hart instead?
May 11, 2023 @ 6:38 pm
KC,
Absolutely. They are both great acts. I’m with ya’.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:03 pm
Good for Lainey, finally a winner that makes sense
May 11, 2023 @ 7:04 pm
Could not agree with you more. Lainey deserves all the awards. She’s amazing.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:08 pm
Hardee’s is a total embarrassment. Nothing screams ignorant and buffoonish more than talking on stage with a chaw of tobacco in your mouth at a major awards show; he seriously couldn’t wait two hours? At least he didn’t bring his spit-filled Mountain Dew bottle on stage with him.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:12 pm
Ed Sheeran and Luke Combs is such a weird combo but it kind of works
May 11, 2023 @ 6:12 pm
That moment when Ed Sheeran feels more country than Hardy.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:59 pm
In Ed’s defense, “Thinking Out Loud” was, to be arguably honest, more country; and unarguably, of much higher quality than 75% of country radio back in 2014 when it was a huge hit song.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:15 pm
Reporter: Ed you just won a 50 million dollar copyright infringement lawsuit, how are you planning to celebrate?
Ed: I’m going to Frisco…
May 11, 2023 @ 6:19 pm
lol
May 11, 2023 @ 6:16 pm
What does it say about Bobby Bones that he shows up in person for the ACMs but can’t show up in person for his Opry Live “hosting”? He is clearly using a green screen when he’s not actually on stage at the Opry.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:19 pm
Love seeing The War and Treaty get a performance slot, just wish they would have performed Yesterday’s Burn, or even Lover’s Game. Still awesome to see them on a big awards show
May 11, 2023 @ 6:19 pm
ACMs pairing Combs and Sheeran are trying to come up with their own Stapleton/Timberlake moment. They missed by many, many country miles.
May 12, 2023 @ 7:43 am
this dude is such a cringe ..he is at the top by making the worst pop music and is still trying to be everything else and imitating others
May 11, 2023 @ 6:24 pm
Highlight of the night was Hardy forgetting he had a dip in. Boss move woulda been to spit on stage.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:25 pm
“Wait in the Truck” is such a dumb song.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:31 pm
Things were on a roll and then Jason Aldean happened….
May 11, 2023 @ 6:35 pm
Ashley’s voice is so damn good. It just cuts! Lindeville is the clear album of the year.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:47 pm
We had a beautiful moment with Lainey Wilson winning female artist of the year paying tribute to her fellow nominees and the women who paved the way for her.
Then they ruined it by giving Jason Aldean a microphone.
Just glad Ashley and here crew were there and Morgan Wallen wasn’t. I don’t have the patience to listen to listen to him try desperately to stay on pitch for more than one bar.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:55 pm
I figured out what bothers me most about Keith Urban It’s that lazy accent where he shortens every other word. Category- catgree. Nominee- nomny
May 11, 2023 @ 6:58 pm
You know what bothers me the most about Kieth Urban? He is TALENTED. Master musician. Great singer. Decent songwriter.
And he wastes it all so often on pop oriented bro country.
Frustrates the hell out of me.
May 12, 2023 @ 6:03 am
Truer words have never been spoken. The production on his records is baffling, but see him live and you’ll be a believer. And I’m speaking of a five-star performance in an arena sound setting. However, some dubious choices abounded here at the ACMs.
May 12, 2023 @ 8:44 pm
I agree with this wholeheartedly. Keith is extremely talented, and pre-Ripcord Keith Urban was pretty damn good. He’s always been pop country, but up until Ripcord, he made good pop country. Then Ripcord happened.
May 11, 2023 @ 6:59 pm
Jordan Davis is Mom Country
Mom country is Jordan Davis
May 11, 2023 @ 8:41 pm
Jordan Davis wears MOM jeans
May 11, 2023 @ 7:01 pm
What channel is this on? I aint got no wifi
May 11, 2023 @ 7:01 pm
CHRIS STAPLETON WON LFG
May 11, 2023 @ 7:08 pm
Did dolly rip off Innercircle?
May 11, 2023 @ 7:08 pm
We had some really low lows…but a couple of really high highs.
Not a complete waste of time.
But..these young uns make me concerned for the future of country music.

Anytime Keith screws it up (a lot) I go back and listen to his first hits.
May 11, 2023 @ 7:13 pm
Zach Bryan didn’t perform? Or did I just miss it?
May 11, 2023 @ 7:41 pm
No, he was in multiple crowd shots, but didn’t play. Not sure if that was his choice or the ACMs.
May 11, 2023 @ 7:14 pm
It went by pretty quick. An (almost) completely commercial-free two hour awards show…makes the usual three-hour ones on TV, feel like four hours.
May 11, 2023 @ 7:17 pm
I have to say it wasn’t as good as the CMA’s, but it was leaps and bounds better than the CMT awards. It’s also a hell a lot better than last years ACM’s. So much for country fans to be happy about tonight.
May 11, 2023 @ 7:26 pm
I feel like it’s not country any more. Luke Combs and Lainey are the only two that sound country. I like hardy, his show was not country. Get yours hit together country music, it’s not church either.
May 13, 2023 @ 12:07 am
Hailey Whitters, Cody Johnson, and Carly Pearce were plenty country. Actually, those three sounded more like country music than Luke and Lainey.
May 11, 2023 @ 7:35 pm
You can tell the apathy surrounding the ACMs just by the far fewer comments here than most years. The move to Amazon Prime hasn’t done the ACMs any favors aside from a much larger budget for gigantic screens, and they certainly aren’t allocating any money to improve the audio production.
May 11, 2023 @ 7:43 pm
The CMAs have always been bigger here in regards to traffic/comments. But the discrepancy continues to grow. The ACMs feel even more like an “also ran” now that they’re streaming.
May 11, 2023 @ 8:19 pm
Well, I appreciate you doing this live blog. So if no one else says thank you, I will here and now.
May 11, 2023 @ 8:33 pm
Thanks Cee Cee Bee. As long as folks are reading, I’ll keep doing them.
May 12, 2023 @ 10:37 am
What are viewers suppose to do that do not stream? The acm’s have lost a lot of viewers since the change. Very disappointing to say the least.
May 12, 2023 @ 10:44 am
There are also a lot of folks in rural areas who do not have proper internet access that allows them to stream. This is a big oversight by the ACMs.
May 11, 2023 @ 8:19 pm
What are the issues with the sound?? ALL of the singers sound off!! Dang!
May 11, 2023 @ 8:29 pm
Trig , the most controversial decision of the Night was Dolly & Garth’s monologue.
Who wrote it?? Did they cross the picket line??
I guess the team behind the ACMs dont support the WGA Writers Strike? Unless they wrote it themselves since Garth & Dolly arent WGA members
May 11, 2023 @ 9:16 pm
Well, Dolly lip syncs these days, and Garth just keeps putting out re-releases of his old stuff, so maybe the monologue or dialogue was canned and recycled too.
May 11, 2023 @ 9:33 pm
There was the potential for a great monologue. Instead, Dolly came off cringey and Garth just seemed spacey.
This isn’t about wokeism. It’s about a bad attempt at being funny and coming off…well…pitiful.
May 11, 2023 @ 9:53 pm
I have been a country fan my whole life. I am a gen-x person. I watched with my kids (a millennial and a zoomer) and my husband (a boomer) -none of whom have any particular interest in County music. We all agreed on some things…
The performance of the night was Miranda Lambert. Haters are gonna hate, but we all saw what she did tonight and that was the closest thing we had to a “moment.”
Ashley McBryde needs more attention. I can’t believe that performance of Bonfire at Tina’s isn’t getting a better reaction.
Cody was very good. And I don’t particularly care for Jelly Roll, but both he and Hardy resonated with my kids. We also enjoyed both Luke Combs performances. I could have done without the Hobbit, but the kids liked it.
Lainey Wilson is the next country queen. She just is. The kids went immediately to download her music…AND to take a deep dive into War & Treaty.
We were all disappointed that Stapleton didn’t perform.
The bottom line is that the people who are going to “save” country music – will be the women who win the war. The worst of tonight was men. The best was women.
That isn’t “woke.” That’s a fact.
Ashley. Lainey. And yes, Miranda. That was the best of what we got tonight.
May 11, 2023 @ 10:02 pm
Hey want to have a good time?
Sure, what did you have in mind?
Well, let’s watch and blog about a music awards show with a vast majority of songs and artists we are not that in to.
Yeah man, that sounds like a blast!
Maybe afterwards you, I and others can discuss how awful it was.
Yeah, and then do it again next year.
????????
Don’t threaten us with a good time.
May 12, 2023 @ 4:29 am
Entertaining read, as usual. Glad I watched a forensic crime drama instead.
May 12, 2023 @ 4:53 am
Very average show featuring a some great artists and performances. ACM and CMA hosts embarrass themselves and the ‘community’ with hack ‘jokes’ and skits. A goat? And since country execs/artists are so enamored by anyone OUTSIDE of country, I guess we’ll continue to see Ed Sheeran perform while Chris Stapleton, Entertainer of the Year, sit on his hands.
May 12, 2023 @ 7:20 am
Every awards show is going to have a non country artist perform, and I’m actually okay with that, as long as it is one. But this presentation just lacked star power all around. Stapleton is usually one of the highlights, and you didn’t even have him perform.
May 12, 2023 @ 7:38 pm
Trigger, any news on what Chris Stapleton’s next radio single will be?
May 12, 2023 @ 7:49 pm
I believe he’s already released three or four singles from “Starting Over,” so I wouldn’t expect another one. I think that is why Stapleton didn’t perform. He’s currently out of an album cycle. They’re probably chilling out until he announces a new album, perhaps later this year.
May 12, 2023 @ 5:48 am
I am far from being a Keith Urban fan but that guitar was a gift from his wife who purchased it from Reggie Young.
May 12, 2023 @ 6:02 am
Did Zach Bryan not preform because he did not want to or was it because he is an outsider so they just threw him a token award (new artist? maybe to the ACM’s) but did not want to give him any airtime? We get a full song from Bailey Zimmerman (was glad to see that), but he is miles behind Zach Bryan. I guess more important to trot out Jason Aldean, Trisha (iconic country songs but we all know she got a slot because Garth was hosting) or Ed Sheeran. Blessed to live in a part of the country where I have an amazing selection of small venues so I am not at the mercy of stadium shows and FM radio to find quality music.
May 12, 2023 @ 7:27 am
I don’t know if Zach didn’t want to perform, or he was not asked. But when you have Jordan Davis up there in the penultimate performance slot, it speaks to the lack of star power in the presentation. My guess is they would have allowed Zach to perform if he wanted to, especially after Morgan Wallen had to pull out. It would have been a big moment for Zach, since he’s not really had many national TV appearances.
May 12, 2023 @ 6:46 am
Thoughts: HARDEEE, brought to you by the letters, W T & F. Cole Swindell sucks. Love Lainey’s personality & singing voice, hate a lot of her music. (production) I keep dreaming she’ll do something different next album. I wish Ashley M. would do a straight up album. Didn’t care for the Lindeville concept & the LV crew, especially Pillbox Patti. She is too old too be actin’ like she’s from th’ hood. It was a reject [DX] Chicks or Pistol Annies album.
May 12, 2023 @ 8:13 am
Agreed. They should have given this slot to Miranda, then had Garth & Trisha perform something for an In Memoriam segment…maybe a medley of songs by artists we lost. The way they handled this was just…wrong. At least Dolly tried to salvage it a bit.
Overall, a decent show. I’m not a fan of country awards shows being done in arenas (I prefer the old days at the Opry house), but Amazon did a good job. Despite sound issues, rhe visual production was stunning. I hope they stay in Texas.
May 12, 2023 @ 12:56 pm
Everyone talking about Lainey, but I’ll tell ya who’s gonna be everywhere next year: and that’s Hailey Whitters. She needs more attention, because she’s AWESOME. Now THAT is what modern mainstream country oughta sound like!
I also really enjoyed Carly and Trisha; Ashley, Caylee, Brandy, John, and Patti; and Miranda. Cody and The War and Treaty were pretty good too.
May 12, 2023 @ 2:55 pm
This is what I hate about today’s country music, Hailey has a dozen outstanding songs but she has to play Everything She Ain’t on every TV performance. The song is well over a year old. She should have been doing something. That’s how you know Lainey has arrived. She didn’t have to sing Heart Like a Truck again.
May 12, 2023 @ 3:20 pm
The ACMs were not that good. I was surprised. I was so looking forward to it. I can’t believe Garth didn’t perform or even talk that much. Most fans wanted Garth to perform. Dolly just wasn’t funny. Jokes didn’t land. Anyone I talked to about the show didn’t like it and didn’t even watch the whole show. The best hosts of the ACMs were Reba and Blake. Honestly the CMTs were more entertaining.
May 13, 2023 @ 1:00 am
No, Gwen Stefani wasn’t invited to this years show.
May 14, 2023 @ 8:31 am
She has better things to do than to go to the ACMs.????????
May 15, 2023 @ 2:10 pm
Quality stuff as usual! The Cole Swindell shade, the Nelly joke, and the other snarky stuff was well on point. Thank you 🙂
