The Top 100 Americana Albums and Songs on Radio in 2019
The Americana Music Association has released the Top 100 Albums and Songs for 2019 according to the amount of radio play each album and song received. The annual report gives listeners a glimpse into the albums, songs, and artists that gained traction in the format over the year, and is a good tool to see what you might have missed in the year’s releases.
These charts reflect records reported to the Americana Radio Airplay Albums and Singles Charts during the period of Dec. 18, 2018 through Dec. 17, 2019. The CDX TRACtion system uses the online streams of Americana radio stations and a proprietary song identification system to track plays of Americana songs in real time, and aggregate them into weekly charts.
83 total radio and online stations feed into the index, including well-known public radio stations such as KEXP in Portland, WAMU in Washington, KUTX in Austin, and WMOT in Nashville, as well as internet-only stations like Americana Boogie Radio and Folk Alley. To see the full list of participating radio stations, click here.
Also important to note: Since these numbers reflect the radio activity over a calendar year, it includes some titles released in 2018, while titles released later in 2019 may appear to be downgraded because they didn’t have a full year to accumulate spins.

I love Jade Bird’s lp, but I can’t fathom why she’s Americana. Seems badly misclassified or more likely the term has become meaningless.
December 19, 2019 @ 12:12 pm
San Isabel was pretty good – not high on energy but very Simon and Garfunkel-ish, with beautiful harmonies. Wish they would get back to a more up-tempo vibe though, like on their first few albums. Nice to the see Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats are still getting mileage out of their most recent, very good album.

How is “Americana” defined, Trig?
Lots of good stuff on these lists, obviously. Lukas’ album is gigantically overrated, in my opinion. Of material that hasn’t gotten much attention on this site, I’d say don’t miss the album by Gregory Alan Isakov, and Hiss Golden Messenger is a highlight, too, though not really country at all.

“How is “Americana” defined, Trig?”
Ha! I’m not stepping in that bear trap.
Let’s just say it’s American music with a strong roots influence incorporating elements of country, blues, rock, and Gospel.
Beyond that, ask Jim Lauderdale.
December 20, 2019 @ 10:40 am
Or “what used to be called country”?
December 21, 2019 @ 9:22 am
Robert Earl Keen’s podcast discusses this is most episodes.
December 19, 2019 @ 12:47 pm
Ah, the 1 million dollar question. I don’t think there is a definition. I do know what it is becoming, but I don’t know what it is by definition.
December 19, 2019 @ 8:07 pm
It’s just folk sung in a smugger tone while eating kale chips and drinking almond milk.
December 20, 2019 @ 8:22 am
… he said smugly.
December 20, 2019 @ 11:18 am
Yea, but I said it smugly while drinking a beer and eating pork rinds… 😀
December 20, 2019 @ 5:41 am
The Beverly Hillbillies SAT analogy comparison would be:
Flatt & Scruggs : Country Music
Cousin Roy : Americana Music
December 20, 2019 @ 9:57 am
Americana–where we put all the good music that, for some reason, we refuse to play on mainstream radio
December 20, 2019 @ 10:00 am
But at least someone is playing it, which is better than nobody. And that’s why, despite the arguments over definition, I continue to support Americana. Anyone who plays Hayes Carll and Tyler Childers is okay by me.
December 21, 2019 @ 7:13 am
I’m starting to see “Country & Americana” pop up as a pair. Which seems reminiscent of “Country & Western.” It’s all just marketing BS at the end of the day. There’s an element of elitism to it.
December 19, 2019 @ 12:30 pm
I hate seeing artists like Tyler and Willie on this list. Americana is that new Pan Asian joint down the street serving Carolina BBQ.
December 19, 2019 @ 12:38 pm
Whatever label(s) you want to attach (Americana, country, singer-songwriter, etc) this is a list of killer new music, and is something we country fans should be happy about!
December 19, 2019 @ 2:30 pm
The world needs more optimism like you, Happy Dan
December 19, 2019 @ 2:52 pm
He’s drunk on eggnog and high on Christmas carols.
December 19, 2019 @ 1:31 pm
Glad to see Hayes Carll on here. Great album from him; listened to it a lot while working at my last job.
Also good to see Springsteen’s album here. Was worried it would slip under the radar
December 19, 2019 @ 5:26 pm
I am still recovering from the emotional toll inflicted by Dying Star. Best album released since Southeastern.
December 19, 2019 @ 7:28 pm
The Lumineers album is the only album I heard this year that was better than Mike and The Moonpies. It is really really good and touches on a subject that affects a lot of people. Really hit home for me.
So many great songs on it but I would recommend fans of this site check out Jimmy Sparks and Salt and the Sea.
December 21, 2019 @ 8:42 am
Trigger reviewed Cleopatra so I was really hoping he’d review “III” but I know he has a full plate. I’d agree that III might be my favorite album of the entire year. The Lumineers really impress me, especially after I wrote them off as trend chasers after “Ho Hey”. But no, they were here to stick around as a powerhouse of actual good Americana music. I love their sound and their storytelling. 10/10 album
December 21, 2019 @ 9:16 am
The Lumineers are still on the list. I don’t know if I’ll get a review up, but there will be more reviews of 2019 albums before we switch over to 2020 in the 2nd or 3rd week of January. An exceptional amount of albums were released in the 2nd half of 2019, and even with publishing more album reviews than ever, I could not keep up.
December 20, 2019 @ 7:44 am
Santana? Seriously? I love Santana and the new album is one of Carlos’s best in a long time. But even with the definition of Americana stretched to it’s limits, I find it hard to categorize Africa Speaks as Americana.
December 20, 2019 @ 9:58 am
The Americana imbrella is becoming so vast that it’s tearing at every seam.
December 20, 2019 @ 8:25 am
I used to describe the music I listen to as Americana. I guess I was wrong.
December 20, 2019 @ 8:39 am
Both Jason Eady and Jamie Lin Wilson are above Santana!!! That’s good!!
December 20, 2019 @ 2:53 pm
I’ll die on the Sean McConnell hill. Don’t let the skinny jeans and hipster hair fool you. He is the real deal.
December 20, 2019 @ 3:32 pm
Vandoliers! The band to watch!
Cigarettes in the rain belongs in the top 5 songs category…
https://youtu.be/CKFhprkKDrs
December 21, 2019 @ 10:06 pm
I haven’t listened to a lot of these but If there’s 90 albums better than John Prine’s then I think we can safely say it was a good year for music!
December 21, 2019 @ 10:06 pm
also what is Willie Nelson, who EVERYONE KNOWS IS COUNTRY, doing on an Americana list?
December 22, 2019 @ 10:55 am
The term Americana was preceded by the term “alt.country.” And so a lot of people who listen to Americana radio probably like Willie Nelson. I know he was on the cover of the old alt.country magazine No Depression at least once.

Made the 2019 Top 100 Americana songs into an Apple playlist. Loving it. Thank you
