Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, Dwight Yoakam to Play Kentucky Benefit
The concert of a lifetime will be going down on October 11th at Lexington, Kentucky’s Rupp Arena when three hometown heroes come together to help raise funds in a massive concert for flood relief. Don’t rub your eyes, what you’re seeing is correct: Tyler Childers, Dwight Yoakam, and Chris Stapleton will all be playing together. Tickets will go on sale Friday, September 16th, and will sell out immediately.
Net proceeds will benefit the Kentucky Rising Fund to support flood relief work and recovery efforts in Eastern Kentucky, including support for the many victims, their families and first responders. LiveNation and the Blue Grass Community Foundation are helping to sponsor the event.
On July 28th, historic rains were dumped on portions of eastern Kentucky in what was described as a “thousand-year flooding event” with 39 people confirmed dead, and millions of dollars in property destroyed. Knott, Letcher, Perry, and Pike counties got the worst of it, affecting the communities of Hazard, Paintsville, Jackson, Prestonburg, Martin, Pikeville, Hindman, Whitesburg, Jenkins, and Neon.
For those that know their country music geography, this is right in the heartland of country music, and specifically along the “Country Music Highway”—the name affectionately given to US Highway 23 that runs through the region. The Country Music Highway Museum is located in Paintsville. This region birthed Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, Loretta Lynn, Keith Whitley, Dwight Yoakam, Sturgill Simpson, The Judds, Ricky Skaggs, Tom T. Hall, Patty Loveless, Gary Stewart, Billy Ray Cyrus, and so many others.
Right after the flooding, both Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers were spotted in the area helping flood victims in various ways. Childers was spotted by a local television station in swamp boots, and Stapleton was spotted in a local Wal-Mart purchasing supplies for locals, and he also volunteered with the Knott County Sheriff’s Department.
Though Dwight Yoakam is mostly known for his revival of The Bakersfield Sound in California, he was born in Pikeville, Kentucky himself, and will be making the trek from Hollywood for the concert. Chris Stapleton grew up in Staffordsville, Kentucky, which is just outside of Paintsville, while Tyler Childers grew up right in Paintsville, and graduated from Paintsville High School.

Won’t be surprised if we see something like that, but they’ll probably wait to sell it out first before announcing it.

Trigger, speaking of Eastern Kentucky singers, have you heard any news about Sturgill Simpson’s recovery from the vocal injury? I know he was talking retirement but I still hope he would be able to come back if he chose too. I don’t even know if I can take the track on the John Anderson tribute as a good sign since we know at least John Prine’s track had to have been in the can for some time.

I have not, but some folks are wondering why he’s not on this lineup, and that could very well be the answer. I does appear he’s taking his retirement seriously. He doesn’t even seem to be doing a lot of producing or acting at the moment. But who knows, he might be waiting in the weeds to wow us all with something sooner than later.

Do you know if Sturgill recorded the John Anderson tribute before or after his vocal injury/retirement?

I am going to try and get tickets. I can only imagine the songs the 3 might collaborate on.

This is why people love Tyler. He’s a good guy. Love his charity work. He cares. Looking forward to the new album. Hopefully he continues on this path, fights the good fight, and makes more awesome tunes, and keeps the politics OUT of the music. This is more impactful anyways. Releasing BLM anthems is trashy and gross and not wanted. It alienates half the country because folks like myself dont support the movement or its goals. Im not into supporting terrorists or engaging in posting propaganda and lies like BLM does. This however, we ALL can support. Regardless of political affiliation we all can come together for this. Hope Trigger does a recap of the show and that they raise a ton of money for this. Great cause. Great musicians.

People like you are EXACTLY why artists like Childers put politics into music. The door is that way, please let it knock you on your ass on the way out.

Personally I think musicians need to shut up and sing. Engage in politics outside of the job, as Tyler is doing here, its a great cause. But singing about it, yeah, Im not interested. I dont want politics shoved down my throat by uneducated people like Karen Morris, Isbell or Mickey. They are zealots, nothing more, nothing less. Id rather not hear politics from them as a result. Isbell is a pompous asshole who thinks his opinion carries weight and that he should virtue signal like doing that bullshit where he only hired black female country singers to open for him. Thats gross and not helpful and its SJW nonsense. I see no difference in that and a white supremacist country musician only hiring white male openers and no one else. Isbell is a total fucking joke.
