Tyler Childers Joins Lukas Nelson for “Old Country Church” in Luck

Willie Nelson’s annual Luck Reunion happens on the Thursday of SXSW in Austin every year. And since it’s inception over a decade ago, the Luck Reunion has birthed some incredibly memorable moments. One people will be talking about for a long, long time just happened during Lukas Nelson’s set when Tyler Childers showed up in a skull cap and scarf for a rendition of “Old Country Church” in the old country church that rests on the grounds of Luck, TX.
It was already unprecedented that Tyler Childers would even play an event as small as the Luck Reunion. At this time, Childers is selling out arenas coast to coat, and sometimes on multiple nights. To see him perform in the tiny Luck, TX church (fire marshal capacity: 49) really is a sight to see. To see Childers perform “Old Country Church” in Luck, TX’s iconic old country church with Willie’s son Lukas just takes it to another level.
“Old Country Church” is a song that appears on Tyler’s 2022 album Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven. It was originally written by J.W. Vaughan. Luck, TX is the old west town Willie Nelson built at his ranch just outside of Austin, TX as the set for the film version of Red Headed Stranger in 1986.
Childers will also be taking the main stage at Luck later in the evening.

Hey do a selfie once with one of these guys eh?

I don’t do that shit, unless the artist is the one that asks and insists on it. I’m not a fanboy. I’m a journalist/critic/commentator/blogger.

This is So Cool.

Looks from Tyler’s scarf and the new keyboard player that Krishna consciousness is making its presence.

Next album will 8 Sitar tracks for followed by a single fantastic song relating the big issues of the day to the common Kentucky man’s struggle.

Krishna music was playing for about 15 minutes before his set at Luck.

I once got a free meal at the Hare Krishna tent at Glastonbury Festival, before going to watch John Foggerty in the pouring rain while swigging a bottle of Jim Beam. Blacked out soon after, don’t remember getting to my tent and woke up with crutches and an ankle the size of a softball. I was on my own all evening as I’d ditched my friends to go see Foggerty while they went to see the fucking Killers, so no-one knows what happened.
It was almost certainly (must be?) the whiskey, but I always wondered what was in that Dahl!

Aha!!!
Maybe we can get Ray Cappo to do a guest spot on the next Tyler album

Krishna Consciousness or keffiyeh? One I can laugh off, the other is fatal.
March 19, 2024 @ 2:21 pm
That looks nothing like a keffiyeh! I would love it if he’d show his support for Palestine though.

Between this and the Opry version recently, it’s makes me think about how amazing the original speculation could have turned out to be if the 3 discs of CITMHTH could have been if each was really stylized differently.
One being Childers typical style.
One being bluegrass-y, maybe?
One being acoustic, maybe?

Is this what got streamed on nugs.net (concert site that has quite a bit of good stuff and has a bunch of stuff from the Luck Reunion I think)?
I don’t have time to watch until this weekend but I think it’s like 15 bucks a month for their subscription concerts and there’s a 7-day free trial. There’s a TON of on demand concert film from country bluegrass and folk artists on their roster.
March 15, 2024 @ 9:28 am
I have no idea if anything was streaming on nugs or if they were on site. I didn’t see anything about it. I got super lucky to get in for this moment. People wait sometimes hours to get into the chapel because they only let 49 people in and the fire marshal is very insistent on this. They were letting photographers rotate in and out, and I happened to walk in right as this happened.

I’m curious to know how long it took standing in line to get into this chapel show?
This was my first year to attend Luck Reunion and I mostly stayed around the big stage.
March 15, 2024 @ 9:30 am
My guess is about 45 min to 1/1/2 hours. Basically you have to cue up 2 sets before to see the one you want to see. I’ve complained for years that they should at least put a monitor and speaker setup outside so more people can experience it. I also respect that they want an intimate setting for moments like this. The saloon stage is similar. Talked to folks who waited an hour in line to see Nick Shoulders, and still didn’t get in.
March 15, 2024 @ 9:44 am
Thanks. I saw Jason Scott at the saloon stage at the start of the day, but when I went back later, there were long lines and I never got back in to that stage. I was interested in seeing Nick Shoulders, but I went by there about 40 minutes or so before his set and there was such a big line that I figured there was no way I was getting in.
March 15, 2024 @ 2:33 pm
Nick Shoulders is currently touring.

Trigger,I need to know. Was that a keffiyeh around Tyler’s neck? Between my aging eyes and the slight blurriness, I couldn’t really tell. I hope that’s not a horrifying answer. At this point, that would be fan-dom killing for me. Please allay my anxiety.

I’m going to have a detailed review of Tyler’s set at Luck soon. For 15 minutes before his set, Hare Krishna music was playing. There was also Indian imagery placed on the Keyboard stand. I am guessing that is the inspiration for the scarf and headgear.
March 18, 2024 @ 11:06 am
Some of those Hare Krishna songs are a real jam for sure.

Tyler has worn these kind of scarfs in the past especially in the early spring. Here’s definite “a look” from last April ….

In concert, Tyler has a tea table/stool setup right next to him. He drinks a lot of hot tea and honey during his set. I always thought the tea and scarfs, especially in the spring, were for his voice and combating seasonal allergies.
A doctor told me a decade ago to start wearing scarfs in the early spring and fall to help regulate my air intake to combat a seasonal cough. That was one good thing about the pandemic, I discovers gaiters and wear them all spring and fall, because I don’t look good in scarfs and whatever Tyler wears to help his voice.

Who is playing the accordion? Seems it’s the same person that plays the keyboard with Brent Cobb?
March 18, 2024 @ 11:51 am
Yes, that is Jimmy Rowland, who used to play with Brent Cobb. He’s currently touring with Tyler. I have a whole breakdown of this in my recap article of the Luck Reunion.
