Tyler Childers to Make Late Night Debut, Stream Album Release Show

Tyler Childers just released his major label debut Country Squire on Friday, August 2nd, and if you can’t get enough of it, you’ll have multiple opportunities see him perform live in the coming days via the magic of mass media. Childers will make his broadcast television debut on Tuesday, August 6th when he appears on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Though Childers has been a fast rising country star, this is his first big TV appearance, and hopefully one of many to come.
And if one or two songs on a late night TV show isn’t enough to wet your whistle, you’ll be able to stream his official Country Squire album release show at Webster Hall in New York on Monday night, August 5th. The live stream will start at 7:45 p.m. Central, 8:45 p.m. Eastern, and will include the entire performance. It will be streamed at tylerchildersmusic.com .
The 28-year-old from Lawrence County, Kentucky started playing music when he was 13, and learned how to sing in the church choir. After graduating from Paintsville High School, Childers attended a few semesters at a community college while pursuing a music career, releasing his first record at 19 called Bottles and Bibles. Appearing throughout Kentucky and West Virginia, Childers became a regional phenomenon, and was given a major boost when the drummer for Sturgill Simpson, Miles Miller, introduced the two. Soon Childers was signed to Thirty Tigers, and became one of the fastest-rising artists in country music.
It was announced in May that Tyler Childers had signed to Sony Music division RCA Records in a partnership with his own imprint, Hickman Holler Records, to release Country Squire. Don’t be surprised if the album debuts at or near the top of the country albums charts this upcoming week.

No cable anymore but great to hear. I’ll definitely google it and couldn’t be happier for him. As expected, the new album continues to grow on me notwithstanding astronomical expectations. I wonder what he’s going to play on Fallon? Popularity aside, imho everyone should hear a solid version of shake the frost at some point. That’s the moment when I first knew what he was capable of as a songwriter (although he’d written plenty of good ones before then, it just hit me hard). We’ll almost certainly tracks from the new album and that’s just fine. It’d be cool to hear a live version of all your’n that’s somewhere in between the 2 current stylings. Still rooting for that song and the others on the new album I really love may lack some mass appeal as theyre hillbilly nostalgic for me. Tyler’s music is often like hearing my grandparents and the eloquent old timers speak from beyond this world. There’s a lot to be said for Trigger’s point regarding regional dialects and characteristics dying out these days. Grateful to Tyler for slowing the process down and drawing attention to the importance of what we are so carelessly walking away from as a society (whether that be with intention or through negligence). I hope it goes better than he/we are hoping it will. At the end of the day, he just deserves it.

One of the exciting things about being a Tyler fan is that we can feel the excitement building, feel the wave building under our feet. It’s happening in real time.
The affection for this guy is really overwhelming. Like you said, you’re rooting for the songs. We’re ALL rooting for this guy. It’s beautiful.

The tonight show is on NBC, so no need for cable.

I guess I meant no *tv anymore. I wouldn’t know how to make a modern “smart” tv pick up NBC and prefer[red] just to watch it online anyways. I saw the performance several days ago now though. It wasn’t my favorite honestly. I’m a tele player and wouldn’t mind if Tyler wanted to start playing a Tele more often, as he is a good and tasteful guitar player but, as of right now, he has an acoustic guitar player’s right hand and plays big rhythm parts better suited for an acoustic guitar. Being a guitar nerd first and foremost (and having been at the particular show where he did the interview I’m about to reference) I watched Tyler’s recent “rig rundown” (a guitar magazine’s show covering the gear musicians use primarily for their live shows if you aren’t familiar) wherein he stated he never played electric guitar at all as of just a few weeks ago. Therefore, I thought it a somewhat odd choice to play a tele on his TV debut. I know his Martin has been in the shop and he only recently got the Collings he’s been playing recently as a second guitar so, I wonder if there wasn’t some sort of technical issue or damage to his Collings or something. He didn’t give any indication of ever wanting to play electric guitar in that interview and the best part of house fire is indeed the drop d acoustic riff he wrote so, the whole thing was just strange to me. However, I’m not attached to house fire’s original format as I was for All your’n (due to the country version actually sounding like his lungs may give out as hard as he sung it) so, I didn’t mind the choice per se this time. I just think the acoustic sounds better on that song. I am very happy things are going well for him though (and that perhaps I could fish out the big networks if I ever so desired again). I also know this goes beyond the scope of your response but, I am curious if anyone knows why he picked up the tele, apparently for the first time that particular night so I thought I’d dig in a bit more. It wasn’t a bad performance and its not a bad song, its just not y favorite Tyler performance or my favorite song is all. HE’s clearly branching out successfully which is great since he seems intent on delivering several songs to his core audience as he caters to the new comers. I certainly don’t think he should stay a starving artist at this point but, do appreciate his efforts to send us some hardcore Appalachian country as he aims for the moon. Such efforts go a long way imho. I certainly remain a big fan.

I put off buying Tix to a show 2 months down the line and they’re sold out! A place Hank3 used to play every year and never sold it out…
August 5, 2019 @ 7:07 pm
What was this song he played? “Remember this children if the good lord willin, in a long long time you’ll get old”
August 5, 2019 @ 9:49 pm
It’s a cover of “Long Long Time to Get Old” by Great Speckled Bird (Ian and Sylvia Tyson) from the album of the same name, written by Ian Tyson.
August 5, 2019 @ 7:09 pm
Shit hot cover of the CDB’s “Trudy.”
August 5, 2019 @ 8:33 pm
Wait, do you mean “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” or “Late Night With Seth Meyers”?
August 5, 2019 @ 8:43 pm
It’s the Jimmy Fallon one. I get those shows confused.
August 6, 2019 @ 7:45 am
This is big. Can SNL be far behind?
August 6, 2019 @ 10:39 am
Hey Trig
Is the release show stream available anywhere still?
Thanks
August 6, 2019 @ 11:18 am
I’m not seeing it archived anywhere at the moment. If I find it somewhere, I’ll try and let folks know.
August 6, 2019 @ 5:33 pm
I really hope this turns up somewhere.
August 7, 2019 @ 9:18 am
I am sure it will turn up in some form. It was really well done….great sound, HD, multiple cameras up close and on the stage. It was almost as if they were recording for a future DVD release or something.
August 7, 2019 @ 10:20 am
Yes, please do. I’m searching for a recording as well. I have a fairly tight schedule and don’t have the availability to catch a lot of live stream events and depend on either my DVR or online clips after the fact. This is one that I hated to miss.
August 6, 2019 @ 6:48 pm
Can’t wait to tune in and see

Saw that and thought it was the release party concert, then saw it was the Fallon show; all good at any rate, thanks for posting.
And boy does Lovitz look bad, by the way.
August 7, 2019 @ 7:43 am
Did Lovitz ever look good?
August 7, 2019 @ 7:54 am
Fair point; perhaps more accurate to say looks worse than the last time I happened to see him.
August 7, 2019 @ 8:30 am
Age doesn’t give any of us a break. I think I last saw him on TV in the 90’s. Surprised he was a guest on Fallon last night. I actually thought he was dead.
August 7, 2019 @ 7:50 am
Decent performance. I get why they went with “House Fire” (it’s got rock elements and a toe tapping back beat non-country people can easily latch onto) but watching the live performance really accentuates how simple and repetitive the song is. It’s an ear worm for sure, but it doesn’t show off Tyler’s talent. Would’ve liked “Country Squire” or “Gemini” to give the masses a better idea of what Tyler’s about.
August 7, 2019 @ 10:08 am
I agree.
August 7, 2019 @ 11:14 am
Stayed up to watch and have to agree. There was some intensity. I hope people check him out as a result. Having those two dancers from the video would’ve been good theater. Hip hoppers do it, why not Kentucky stompers.
August 7, 2019 @ 12:06 pm
The part where the lead guitar comes in (at 1:46 in the YouTube video) is a rush, with the crowd cheering, but then the song and crowd response sort of plateaus from there.
I just noticed the lighting person goofed up. The main stage lights didn’t turn on until a second after the lead guitar came in. Obviously it was meant to synch up, with a collective bang. Oops.
August 7, 2019 @ 8:12 am
hmmmmm…i dunno …..kinda want to be on board with TC . but the fallon thing has me wondering . prob’ly not a popular opinion but i thought it was boring , muddy-sounding , jammy and a bit amateurish overall . but hey ….no one is going to mistake him for rhett or aldone .
August 7, 2019 @ 10:08 am
“House Fire” in my opinion is a pretty mild track, and I’ve questioned it being put out front for Tyler from the beginning. That said, it does carry an intensity live, though that intensity is going to be hard to translate through TV. I think RCA is trying to put Tyler’s most non country tracks out there to appeal to a wider audience. Perhaps not a bad strategy, but one that in my opinion is not putting his best foot forward.
August 7, 2019 @ 11:14 am
I agree with Albert that the performance was so so…. I will chalk it up to a TV studio / network show being a dodgy environment if you’re used to clubs, festivals & theaters – not just in a technical sense but lots of associate producers, wranglers, makeup people etc. in your face. Also agree about the mix, muddy, low vocals with muddier reverb. The Youtube video sounds much better. All in all this stuff is no reason to slight TC. Playing a network show is a rite of passage, a portal you need to go through to gain wider appeal. I’m still on board.
August 9, 2019 @ 7:07 am
@Albert… Man, I get what you’re saying. I like the idea of Tyler Childers but I was really underwhelmed by this performance and Country Squire as a whole. In fairness, I haven’t given it a lot of time to grow on me, but not much about his songwriting really grabs me. I’m happy that an artist like him would be able to get the attention of Sony, but I’d be surprised if anybody down there actually “gets” it. They do know a money making opportunity when they see one. Listening to Country Squire was like reading a book by Faulkner. I want to like it, but I just can’t.
As a side note, I think Ever Loving Hand is the equivalent of first graders laughing at fart noises, except now we’re grown up and its just not that funny anymore. I could understand if he played it as a joke at a club sometimes, but its a stupid thing to put on an album, especially one as tiny as Country Squire. Also, if you’re into shrooms and smoking pot, great, fine, whatever, but that psychedelic imagery doesn’t really serve the album, unless it was centered around the few twangy strains of sitar. I’m so over people flaunting their substance abuse or their drinking problem as if its something to be romanticized. Bullshit.
August 7, 2019 @ 10:14 pm
So very cool. This is just the beginning for him.
August 9, 2019 @ 1:06 pm
Hopefully he doesn’t play that dumbass everlovin hand song. It ruined the mediocre new album. Maybe “Purgatory” set the bar too high, but it is nice to see some talent on TV
