Vince Gill Has Become Country Music’s Collaborator-In-Chief
Vince Gill really is the closest thing that country music has to the five-tool baseball player. He can do it all. As a solo artist, he’s a Country Music Hall of Famer and Grand Ole Opry stalwart. He can throw a high harmony on any song and make it shine, or turn in a guitar solo that is good or better than any session player. He’s an incredible songwriter. And by all accounts, Vince Gill is a good dude as well.
Gill is also about the only guy you can slot on a tour with The Eagles and not look at him sideways. In fact, it’s strangely perfect, especially when you consider the time Vince did in the legendary country rock band Pure Prairie League before launching his own career. Country, classic rock, bluegrass, Western Swing from fronting The Time Jumpers all those years, Vince Gill can do it all.
But over the last year or so, Vince Gill has added another item to his repertoire, and one where his wide array of talents has come into good use: he’s become one of the most available and sought-after collaborators in all of country music. From Wade Bowen’s recent Saving Country Music Song of the Year nominee “A Guitar, A Singer and A Song,” to the heart-wrenching title track to Sunny Sweeney’s recent album Married Alone, to Drake Milligan’s “Goin’ Down Swinging” from his SCM Album of the Year-nominated Dallas/Fort Worth, it’s often the involvement of Vince Gill that puts these already incredible artists and excellent songs over-the-top.
Getting Vince Gill to guest on your song or album comes with a two-fold benefit. Not only do you get to showcase his talent on the track, it also adds a level of legitimacy and attention to whatever is happening. You know if Vince Gill signed off on it, it’s probably something good. Aaron Lewis is a pretty polarizing artist due to some of his political statements, but his song “They Call Me Doc” about military medics written by veterans is hard to not root for. Bringing in Vince Gill with Dan Tyminski to add harmonies completes that track.
That’s the thing about Vince Gill. He may be prolific in his recent collaborations while remaining principled and picky, but he shows no discrimination when it comes to who he will work with. He’s too above that. When pop country’s Brantley Gilbert came calling for the opening track on his recent album called “Heaven By Then,” he accepted that call. Gill is all over Keb’ Mo’s recent album Good To Be as a producer, guitar player, and harmonizer.
Sometimes the song comes with “(feat. Vince Gill)’ in the track list, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes his collaborations are more passive, like in the role as a contributing songwriter such as on the recent Dailey & Vincent Album Let’s Sing Some Country! when they covered Vince’s “Young Man’s Town,” or Cody Johnson’s Human: The Double Album that featured Gill’s “Son of a Ramblin’ Man.”
In the last year, Vince Gill also sang with Ann Wilson of Heart on the song “Love of My Life,” and worked on an interesting project with Michael Feinstein reimagining the Gershwin songbook into country songs called Gershwin Country. There, Vince Gill sang on the song “Fascinating Rhythm” with The Time Jumpers. Vince Gill collaborations are nothing new. He’s always been willing to work with others, and doesn’t need the spotlight on him the whole time. But in the last couple of years, it’s like he’s sought those opportunities out.
In 2023, Vince Gill will be spending more time on the road as The Eagles have rebooted their Hotel California tour that got crimped in part due to the pandemic, so his rate of collaborations may decrease slightly. And though it’s great to see Gill’s name in the liner notes of so many projects, a few are wondering when a new album may be coming from him. His last solo release Okie from 2019 resulted in him winning his 22nd Grammy Award for Best Country Solo Performance for the song “When My Amy Prays.”
But whether a new album from Vince Gill is in the works or not, you know you’ll be hearing from him sooner than later, and probably playing or singing with somebody cool, putting the finishing touch on a killer song.

That’s a good summation of his contributions.
He’s made guest appearances on a plethora of country songs since the 80’s. Also I don’t think there is anyone of his caliber who can and will perform in a low-profile setting. Many times I’d have to look in the liner notes to verify it was Vince singing on some random non-single album cut.
Also the only time I caught him with the Time Jumpers he was sick and sang lower than his normal range AND he was still really good. I don’t know any other artist who could do the same.

Hearing on album cuts is like spotting Emmylou on a track. It is just so distinctive.

It’s true, but I like to make sure. It’s still fun to check the liner notes.

One of the most talented all round musicians in country music for sure. I am pretty sure that back in the eighties before his solo career had really got moving that mark knofler of dire straits asked vince to tour with dire straits as a guitar player.

Dire Straits also had Paul Franklin (steel guitar) tour with them. Paul frequently collaborated with Vince. Their Bakersfield album is probably my favorite country album of the 2010’s.

It was 1980 when I first saw him as Pure Prairie League and prog/soft rock legends Ambrosia co headlined what was then our only summer event here called Chicagofest. Fast forward to 1998 when I dated a gal who was, to put it mildly a Vince Gill Stan. She took me to the Christmas show and in turn made me a huge fan ever since. Still remember his excitement of having Ringo hand him a Grammy. This last year was great with Wade, Sunny, and my personal fav Going Down Swingin’ with Drake Milligan. As a singer, player, and a songwriter there’s very few like Vince in my book. He’s the goods!

My 3 favorite songs of his are go rest high on that mountain with patty loveless , trying to get over you and whenever you come around. Chris Stapleton has a version of whenever you come around which is very good but doesn`t reach the heights of vinces original in my opinion

Hey Trig, trying to sneak a segue in.
(And, not doing such a hot job on the sneaking)
Conrad has a new song out. Think it is sweet.
And, something i think Vince would appreciate.

He also produced two Ashley Monroe albums.
Saw him play with the Time Jumpers once and it was a great show. The fact that he was playing with them at the time was probably the overwhelming reason they were touring (ie outside Nashville) to begin with.
Final thought on Vince – the George Jones memorial show where he sang with Patty. Ugh, what can I say, I’m a crier.

Saw him in ‘22 at The Ryman. What a show! Four hours of amazing music, with just a 15 minute intermission. If you get a chance to see him live, do it.

One of the best concert videos I have ever seen was when he showed up in Chicago a few years ago to join in Eric Clapton’s blues festival. He jammed and played along with several different artists and really showed his chops as a guitar artist who can play any type and genre of music he wants to and be fantastic at it. He is just a genius!

I was at that show (the 2010 one) and he did a set with James Burton, Albert Lee, Keb’ Mo’, and Earl Klugh moving in and out of the lineup. Most of it was ripping fast Telecaster jams but the most memorable part to me was when he slowed it down and sang “Whenever You Come Around” for a change of pace. Of course they played some really tasteful licks on it but the blues-rock crowd there just wasn’t ready for that level of sentimentality. The whole soccer stadium went from screaming and hollering to dead silent looking they were trying to not to cry into their beer. Congratulations Vince, you managed to depress a whole stadium worth of fans in a few short minutes! Hahaha. Great moment.

Keb Mo had a concert at the theater in the Country Music Hall of Fame December 2021, Vince Gill joined him on stage for a few songs – wonderful. Ketch Secor
also joined for some songs. That theater is really nice but seems really underutilized for some reason.

Agreed. The Hall of Fame has two pretty world-class venues with perfect acoustics (a smaller one beneath the rotunda as well), and it’s almost like they forget they are there. There is a lot the Hall of Fame could do to engage the public more with the institution, and they just don’t.

Vince is one those big name artists you just say Vince and everyone knows who you are talking about. So talented and just always sounds good. He is someone though when you think what is his biggest songs, Go Rest High is probably it but he doesn’t have one that people who aren’t into Country Music might know. Seen him three times-Amy, his band, and the Time Jumpers and they were all great. In college, I loved his Pure Prairie League work.
Trigger, I’d never heard of that Michael Feinstein Country album. A lot of big names with him. What did you think of it beyond interesting?

I only heard about it myself at the very end of the year. Saw no press or push from anyone about it. I may still go back and review it.

Trig, you just don’t know how right you are.
When Vince, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, Steuart Smith, Deacon Frey, & Joe Walsh took the stage front and center, at the Q, in Cleveland, late October, 2018, it was Deadly Sexy.
Pure, Fire.
Hands down, the best concert have ever been to.

My wife and I caught a show on this tour in New Orleans in June, 2018 and it may have been the best show I have ever seen.
It was amazing how much the Eagles relied on him from both a guitar virtuoso and vocals perspective.
We plan on going to the Hotel California show in Knoxville in April.

Wasn’t it just the most amazing concert?!
So Happy for you, that you & your wife are planning on seeing the show in April.
Have been thinking since this morning of texting a friend & asking, how about it?
She got two amazing tickets to the Cleveland show, in ’18. My husband passed away Labor Day Sunday, on the 2nd, that year, & this friend told me in no uncertain terms, that i better have my a** in Cleveland at that concert.
Was how friends started networking, circling the wagons to try to help protect & heal one of their own.
The night my husband died, i had the Eagles blasting as i drove to the lake house, to meet up with all of the stunned family members & friends who were there, that weekend.

Here’s my “Vince Gill seems like a total class act” story. Saw the Time Jumpers a few years ago in Park City, Utah. Vince came out before the show with a stool, a microphone and a guitar. He explained what the Time Jumpers were about, and his role as “just another one of the musicians in the band.” He went on to say that, so as not to detract from the show, he would play a couple of Vince Gill songs solo up front. To get ‘em out of the way. He did (killer, of course), then in a few minutes the Time Jumpers started up.
Watching the Time Jumpers that night, if you hadn’t known who Vince Gill was, you could never have picked out “the star.” He carried himself as one of the guys in the band. Bravo, man.

I’ve been a fan of Vince’s for years. I even try to sing his songs at karaoke. I was at a concert he had in Knoxville . This was right after the news of his impending divorce.
We got a great concert that night. He finished his set but the crowd.wouldn’t let him go. After 2 or 3 encores he gave up. He came out in his sock feet and unbuttoned shirt sat Down on the stage floor and told his audience that he had no place to go so he would stay as long as they wanted.
It was wonderful, sad and generous of this great man. My favorite singer and star.

Really just him championing all music. His work on PBS’s “All Star Bluegrass Celebration”. Dude played upright bass with the Del McCoury Band!
Played that Dailey and Vincent cover you mentioned on “Austin City Limits”.
He’s hilarious, too. There are some Vince/Lyle Lovett acoustic tour videos on YouTube.
