Waylon Jennings Family Member Responds to Luke Bryan’s Comments
The flap over Luke Bryan’s characterization of Outlaw country artists as cocaine-snorting cavorts “laying in the gutter, strung out on drugs” continues, despite Luke Bryan attempting to clarify his comment on Twitter late Friday (7-10).
On Thursday, July 9th, Luke Bryan told HITS Daily Double,
Well, yeah. I think that people who want Merle, Willie and Waylon just need to buy Merle, Willie and Waylon. I’ve never been a ‘Those were the good old days’ kind of guy. I’m not big on looking back on the past. I’m not an outlaw country singer. I don’t do cocaine and run around. So I’m not going to sing outlaw country. I like to hunt, fish, ride around on my farm, build a big bonfire and drink some beers and that’s what I sing about. It’s what I know. I don’t know about laying in the gutter, strung out on drugs. I don’t really want to do that.
After Saving Country Music and others took exception to the comments, Luke Bryan responded,
Hey guys I’ve been thinking about this all day, every now and then I feel I need to defend myself in this business. I did a great interview with many topics discussed. It’s so frustrating that something negative has spun out of the story. I would never speak against any artist. It’s not my style. I consider Willie, Waylon and Merle musical heroes. I was trying to state what I was about and where I come from with my music. It’s simple as that. Love yall. Signing off. Thanks for the love.

Now one of the members of Waylon’s extended family has spoken out about Luke’s initial words and his apology. Kathy Pinkerman Jennings, who is the wife of one of Waylon Jennings’ sons Buddy Jennings, spoke out about the matter via Facebook initially on July 10th, and the posted a video to YouTube late Saturday night. Despite some media reports, Kathy Jennings makes it clear she is not speaking for the family of Waylon Jennings, only for herself.
To Luke Bryan :
I hope your family members are proud of you for using your WORLDWIDE platform to take the time to disrespect my Father in Law. You have managed to PROVE to the world your true self.Albeit that Waylon’s drug use is well documented and something he overcame, I assure you, he was never “laying in a gutter.” At the peak of his career and drug abuse, he was making history and setting records. He, single handedly paved the way for you and everyone else to make music the way the artist wanted to make it. I’m not willing to waste my time to debate your “music” and / or the fact you have zillions of fans – I will however, not sit back and be quiet when you have so blatantly disrespected Waylon.
I recall the time I was at the Grand Ole Opry to visit with Andy Griggs, you were making your debut appearance. My friend that was with us had just seen your video. As we stood at the side of the stage, Jeannie Seeley [Seely] was talking to us and you walked over to introduce your self to her and told her how much you admired her, she in turn introduced you to myself and my husband. I almost got a cavity because of the sweetness of the words coming out of your mouth – you told us Waylon was one of your musical heroes. You went on and on and on.
This is not about music, Outlaw Country, whatever – it’s about DISRESPECT.
You are a platinum, disrespecting, no singing, whining, grasping for media attention, asshole. Use your platform for something good, instead of bashing the LEGENDS that came before you.

I never cared for Luke Bryan,Jason Aldean,Brooks & Dunn,Toby Keith,Darius Rucker or anybody like that.
I however do like old Garth Brooks music,Clint Black,Michael Martin Murphey,Dan Seals and Jimmy Buffett.
All of those five did true Country music and maintained their honesty and humility at the same time.
Luke Bryan’s music like Country Girl Shake It For Me is trash.
Today’s Country music is garbage.
The steel guitar and the violin is what made Country Music Cointry.
Montgomery Gentry is not really Country either.
John Michael Montgomery is more Country than his brother Eddie Montgomery ever could be.

Well said, interesting that LB is 40 years old and still so incredibly disconnected from those who captured the attention of audiences across the globe! Makes me really wonder what will happen to him at the end of the day, you can be sure that in only a few years,, he will be a distant memory in the minds of folks who never had any taste or sense of country music in the first place…. what a legacy!!!
You go Kathy! A very articulate, well written and presented call out to someone who needed to be called out!

I hate Luke Bryan’s music as much as anybody but I don’t find his comments disrespectful at all. I think he was saying he doesn’t sing songs about addiction, tough living and breaking the law because he personally has no connection to those topics.
He can’t sing outlaw because he isn’t an outlaw. He’s a quintessential all-American kid, who loves sports and barbeque. He’s a former frat boy and probably homecoming king. So it would make no sense for him to sing about struggling to quit drinking while watching his habit destroy his life.
I think he basically just stated why his music sucks. He doesn’t have any interesting insights or perspectives. He’s just familiar with football, beer, cookouts and parties. So that’s what he’ll sing about. The music will suck but you can’t expect too much more from him. He just isn’t interesting.

I agree he didn’t word it great but I don’t get a disrespectful vibe from it. He could have said that about rock stars that sang about addiction and people wouldn’t have gotten upset. Because it was Waylon everybody is overreacting.
He doesn’t sing about drugs or addition because he isn’t connected to those topics. Waylon and many other famous artists were and they did write about those topics. Luke Bryan writes about tailgating because that’s all he understands. No news here.

You raise good points but at some point, good authors and songwriters (which Bryan isn’t) need to be able to relate to others’ situations and predicaments. Of course, having more life experiences (good and bad) help that. For example, I don’t know whether Dress Blues and Elephant were based on real life experiences for Jason Isbell. Neither had anything to do with his addiction problems. I wouldn’t be surprised if Outfit was based on real life.

Luke doesn’t write all of those songs, he has the usual 3 or so bro-country specialists write or co-write them. It was Dallas who said tailgating is all he knows but he and Luke have written better songs. Isn’t it obvious they intentionally dumb down songs? Luke can get any song or type of song he wants. George Strait didn’t write his songs.

I do think that what Luke Bryan said was disrespectful, and more than anyone, the families of Waylon, Willie, and Merle have a right to feel disrespected.
However I also think that we can make too much of this if we’re not careful, and come across as bitter and spiteful. On a personal level, Luke Bryan doesn’t appear to be a bad dude. He said some dumb stuff, and we’ve all been there. I’m glad so many are willing to stand up and defend the legacy of the “Outlaw” term, but we also have to be mindful of where the limits are. Push too hard, and people begin tuning out.
I almost didn’t want to post this, but I felt as a news item, it was worthy.

That said I don’t think he’s being too defensive about this, he said what he said, got called out on it, more or less apologized. It WAS stupid but I’m not going to crucify him for what he said. To me, this situation shows how common the struggles and sentiments are between Saving Country Music and some of the sentiments of the Shooter Jennings camp. There is more in common than there isn’t, so continuing to believe there’s some petty feud and assigning accusations where they’re not warranted is unhelpful to the cause. That’s exactly what Luke Bryan and Music Row want—independent music feuding amongst itself and cutting the pie slices of independent fans down slimmer and slimmer scene lines so no one entity can get big enough to actually do battle with the common enemy.

July 12, 2015 @ 5:39 pm
So to get it straight and clarified for me on this “fued” thing between you and Shooter, it would more one sided on his part correct? At least that’s what I would guess from reading various articles on here for a year or so now. Thanks for clearing it up in advance.
And I can see both sides here, I can see how it can be seen as disrespectful, but I don’t think Luke was trying to be. And it’s also kinda harder to gauge the tone and what/how exactly someone was trying to say via text, so this could be one of those cases
Trigger
July 12, 2015 @ 5:58 pm
I’m not going to say it’s one-sided. I will say that the “feud” exists more in the minds of people not named Shooter and Trigger who love drama (despite saying they hate it), who are looking for any and every opportunity to stoke the fires and get the feud brewing again because they like a good tussle. I really have no idea how Shooter feels about me at this point, but even when he jumped my ass about the Jon Hensley situation, it was because someone told him to. I’ve avoided talking about Shooter Jennings for going on two years unless it’s essential.
One of the times I did bring his name up recently was when an individual accused Shooter and Jon Hensley of being involved in the death of Wayne Mills. The story was that Shooter and Jon were at the scene of the crime to buy drugs, and Wayne was killed as part of that. But I was in the courtroom during the murder trial, and was able to exonerate Shooter and Jon from having any involvement. They had left way before bullets started flying. I’ve had more positive to say about Shooter over time than negative. I wouldn’t put him in my Top 15 for folks I’ve taken exception with over the years. But that hasn’t stopped the multitudes of death threats and ridiculous accusations. I can’t even write an obituary for Jon Hensley without getting shouted down. It sucks, because I would like to talk about Shooter and his music more.

Unnamed substances under the driver’s seat not withstanding. How about singing about something more mature than hot chicks in shorts? At least FGL is more age appropriate for their music.

If Waylon was still alive I really don’t think he would care at all. I don’t understand why everybody is getting so upset. Bryan misspoke a bit. He makes crappy music. How is any of this surprising?
It’s like if anybody says something bad about Kurt Cobain, everybody lashes out at them saying “don’t you know he’s a musical genius.” We’re doing the same thing with Waylon. If somebody says something that isn’t complementary we want to hang them.

I think this is part of a broader strategy of Luke Bryan to erode dissent against the current crop of mainstream artists by painting people who don’t like his music with a negative brush. There’s actually a few more examples of this, and I hope to highlight this soon. It is Luke who is on the offensive here. He is looking to discredit his detractors, and if we don’t speak up, he will succeed.
At the same time, I agree we can’t make too much of this. This is not some major watershed moment in country music. It’s just a moment when the biggest star said something stupid, and it’s up to the public to correct it.

Well I have to agree on the Nirvana bit. The way RS sucks at their teat with every list (great guitarist/vocalist really?) is always amusing. I get their place in music history but history there comes a pint when there is just too fandom and praise that I get worn out by it. Sure they were great but NOT THAT great. Ellington had a more lasting impact on music in my opinion but you never hear about him anymore do you?

To everyone one’s own, but I personally have always found Nirvana to be one of the most overrated rock bands of all-time. Same with the Rolling Stones, Van Halen (although they’re curiously hardly cited anymore in musical discussions) and AC/DC.
I get Nirvana are frequently cited as an influence, but to me it mostly comes down to raw, gruff, imperfect vocals and power chords in how they’ve informed subsequent acts. That and tortured themes. All of the impostor acts they have influenced including Puddle of Mudd and Seether are just frickin’ gawd awful, but even Nirvana itself is average-at-best with “In Utero” the best of their three albums.

Agree but it was very disrespectful and it goes deeper. As Ron points out these guys (FGL, BS, LB, JO, DR, just to name a few in the core group) have been doing this A LOT recently. They are all getting defensive because they are tired of the pushback. Where Bryan really wet the bed was naming names. He could of said the same thing without naming names…. That’s where he F’ed up and yes he disrespected people and families. The fact that Bryan’s ‘music’ sucks is not the point. The point is fans of real music don’t want to hear puppets like Darius and Bryan try to explain history they don’t even understand.
Six String Richie
July 12, 2015 @ 3:48 pm
I actually think things would be more interesting in country if more people named names. So many artists say they are tired of bro country but don’t name names. Then the bros say they don’t know what bro is and they don’t play it.
Only Zac Brown and Aaron Lewis have named names and I think that’s awesome. It keeps artists accountable.
If Kenny Chesney had specifically named FGL when he made jabs at bro country people it would have been bigger news and people would have listened. If Alan Jackson had specifically called out “Burnin’ It Down” as a crappy song, and cited it’s poor lyrics, that would have been more newsworthy and Aldean would have had to respond.
In other genres, particularly hip hop and rock, artists call out each other all the time. If a rock band goes mainstream and becomes famous, they get called sellouts. That helps keep artists accountable.
Country needs to name names. It would be so much more interesting.

Our great singers have been Waylon, Willie, Merle, Cash, and Don Williams. Whatever else doesn”™t detract from that fact, and saying differently won”™t enhance anybody”™s career. Jones, great though he was, is not in the same class with them.. If you want to know who I am, run me on Google

I would argue that Jones had a better voice than everyone on that list. As great as Cash’s lyrics could be, his songs were generally lacking in melody, and Waylon’s songs often had the same problem. On an overall basis (lyrics, melody, and vocals), I would rank Merle at the top followed by Jones, although Willie ranks very close to Jones as well.
Just a matter of personal opinion, though.

Jones should be at the top of the list. He’s not only the greatest male country singer, but is on the short list with the likes of Frank Sinatra and Sam Cooke as one of America’s best-ever singers. His best work transcends country. It’s not just about his voice as the guy had a tremendous amount of soul to go along with it. I visit a Southern Soul forum from time to time and Jones is revered there as a soul singer. I used to do a radio show where I would play Jones back to back with Cooke or Otis Redding or Bobby Bland and it would work perfectly. He’s up there with the very best, regardless of genre.

Wayne Cruseturner…If you really think Merle, Waylon, Cash, Don Williams, or Willie could outsing Jones, you are either deaf or just plain stupid. Jones has more range, better style and phrasing, and ten times the soul and emotion of any of those mentioned. Hag has been interviewed saying he was “self conscious singing around Jones, because he sang too good”. According to Waylon himself, “if we all sang like we wanted to, we’d all sound like George Jones.” Maybe the most ignorant post I’ve seen on this site, and I’ve been reading for years…

Then there’s this. When Johnny Cash was asked who his favorite country singer was, he would reply “You mean, apart from than George Jones?”

Negative spin? Sounds like yet another jerk blaming the media for quoting him correctly. Politicians and athletes do this all the time. They say something stupid into a microphone or recording device and then blame the media when their exact words end up in print or on TV. There is no negative spin or out-of-context in Luke Bryan’s quotes. He obviously was caught saying exactly what he believes and now wants to backpedal his way out of it because the quote makes him look like a dope. More likely he’s afraid it will cost him some record sales. There’s no backing out. If you don’t believe what you’re saying, then don’t say it. Kudos to the media for (as usual) quoting the story’s subject correctly. Shame on Luke Bryan for attempting to shoot the messenger.

His faux-apology response actually angered me more than his initial remarks in how insincere and calculated it sounded: two adjectives that define at least 95% of sitting politicians today.

This is all bull shit! Who cares! Another half thought out comment blow out of proportion! It actually gives me a good idea for a country song!
“I was laying in the gutter just a needing a hug
Strung out on cocaine, little white pills with my grave already dug
Gonna pick myself up, dust myself off, and do it all again
And if I wake up in 15 years, I hope….I won’t…be dead” h.w.

I was at Luke’s show in Nashville last night and he started into this statement about how he moved to Nashville to chase his dreams and how proud he was to be a part of country music. It seemed really heartfelt ..and then he started to play just him and his piano….I was hoping it would be a nice homage to his so-called country influences….but no…he stated how much country music meant to him…and launched into a cover of Marroon 5’s “Honey.” He is also the only artist who I know verbally reminds the audience at each show that he “is the reigning ACM & CMA Entertainer of the Year.” I get that he’s proud of that, but I’ve never heard any other artist boast about their accolades during their live show. Just struck me as odd.

Real artists are humbled by accolades and don’t mention them. That’s not the reason they do what they do.
Tom
July 13, 2015 @ 12:06 pm
And to contrast that, Waylon didn’t like industry awards because he didn’t think artists should be in competition with each other.

Luke Bryan peed in his Cheerios. He needs to keep his mouth shut and keep reeling in the $$$ while he can. Personally I don’t even want to look at the pretty frat boy. Because I sense things are changing. And the bro-country singers know it. I don’t blame the Jennings family for being angry about the insult.
I’ve got my eyes (and money) on artists like Chris Stapleton (he’s selling out every concert, plus his new album is selling like hot cakes). And there’s many more getting the recognition. It’s time for country music to be just that, not pop country, rap country, etc. There’s a lot of people hungry for it.
“Real” county is coming back. It’s time…..

I find it really strange that the terms “worldwide platform” is used to describe luke….let’s be honest he is hardly known outside the US for crying out loud. And even in the US he is far from the likes of Katy Perry, Beyonce or even lady Gaga etc. for that matter…

You had to mention, with the exception of possibly Gaga (who is talented but wastes much of it on crappy material & bizarre stage shows), some of the LEAST talented female artists, ESPECIALLY Katy Perry. This blows your argument up….

Luke Bryan has been through hell and back. He is a great entertainer and people are attacking him becuase he doesn’t put out the same type of music that Waylon, Willie and Hank did. The Good ‘Ole Days country boys. He actually complimented them but also stated he wasn’t like them. Now a days you can’t be like them. The public will tear you up if you so much as say choice words or post a drunk photo. If he sand about smokin’ weed he would be crushed by the media. Look at Tim McGraw doing a fund rasier for Sandy Hook and now he “supports gun control” And let’s be honest they did run around and do drugs got into a shit load of trouble. So let us “clean, legal, un-addicted” country fans enjoy that hot sexy man who is very talented! I don’t think he disrespected any of them. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck.. it’s a duck! He ws spot on! Just as she stated Waylon would say.. “FUCK ‘EM….” “Fuck ‘Em back” Thank you Luke Bryan for not promoting getting high and breaking the law! It’s not really that cool people!
Tom

Have you listened to much of Luke Bryan’s music? A significant number of his songs are about getting high on booze. Frankly, he’s probably recorded more songs glorifying alcohol abuse in his short career than Waylon, Willie, and Merle have recorded combined.

Apparently humility and gratitude for those who paved the road for him are not part of Luke Bryan’s make up. He would do well to learn a little history. Beer drinking, bikinis, truck tailgate songs won’t be top 40 forever. Then what?

Just another in a long line of pretty boy homogenized no soul new country douche bags.
With Blake at the head of the class. Those old timers sang about real life and times and made Nashville possible for these no class money grubbing punks. What a shame that real country
is put down and this pablum is held up as the new standard.

Waylon, Willie, Tompall, Jessie Colter, Owens, Cash, Ramblin’ Jack, Cline and Wells, The Singin’ Brakeman, Loretta, The Carter Family, Flatt and Scruggs, Wills, The Skillet Lickers and Fruit Jar Drinkers, Glen, Vernon, Robison, Hank and numerous other usually unusual characters established country AND western music. Their existence was living and playing within the real world and the realm of country music. They sang what they experienced in life. Genuine human elements touched other hearts and souls. By foolishly, within his own mind, placing himself above such musicians and like people, Mr. Luke only demonstrates how shallow, rootless and outlandishly egotistical he and most country (pop, please excuse me, crossover) “stars” have become. The performer and music are now commercially expeditious, but lack the inherent artistry and range of human thought and emotion demonstrated in earlier country AND western music. My, My, how pride goes before a fall!!! Have a really good day and try not to pick on THE GREAT ONES in country music (no one will ever say that about you and Blake, will they?). I say screw Luke Bryan and is stupid comeants I think he is just trying to defend his shit Music that he knows is watered down play it safe dirt road anthem 101…. kinda sad when the guy can actually sing and at his level of success he could actually record some real music and make the sheeple take notice. I miss the days when a artist like Hank jr could actually make the country evolve but yet still remain true to its roots now that’s real talent

I was actually more offended by her language (was the F-word really necessary?) than anything Luke Bryan said. Sometimes the truth is misconstrued, sometimes it’s misinterpreted, sometimes it’s spot on and it hurts…but good grief, nobody really paid that much attention to what LB said until this post came out about it. Sometimes it’s best just to LET IT GO

This is so sad to me. Another example of the new way of life in 2015. Get offended by every opinion that comes out of someone’s mouth. Old and tiresome. This “I’m offended attitude” all of the time. Ughhhhhhh. Totally blown out of proportion by good-for-nothing busy-bodies.
Meanwhile! This site and viewers are full of opinions, rants, hate and say LB has a vagina- but that’s acceptable. So and so is not country enough- so and so sucks because he doesn’t have enough fiddle….What a bunch of hypocrits you are.
Waylon, Willie and Jennings would/will not take this as hard as you– because badasses don’t care what others think.
Relax. Chill out. Calm the heck down. Everyone is taking this entirely too seriously.

Guys, I’m 50 years old and as it happens just downloaded Willie sings Kristofferson this afternoon because I was feeling nostalgic. I have of course heard of Luke, but couldn’t name one song he has and didn’t recognize any they listed in the article. I love the “heroes”, grew up with them and still listen to all of them today. If you auctully read the article, he didn’t mean it the way most are taking it. It wasn’t a shot. And to be honest even if it was a shot. I’m glad that young people today(some anyway) are not glamorizing that life stile. It makes great music, but is devastating to people and families. To each his own, its a free country. God bless America!

What do you expect from a pop star with a cowboy hat? Outlaw music is real country music, it is music from the downtrodden, the broken, the man who lives on the edge. The only living on the edge Luke has ever done is agonizing over which pop song to sing with a country twang. If he wants to explain why he chooses the songs he does that is fine but you can’t disrespect an entire genre of music because you don’t identify with substance abuse or criminality or struggling on a farm, or heartbreak. I think Luke does not understand country music fans at all.

Wouldn’t worry too much about little Luke. Even at Waylon’s lowest point, he was and will always be a better singer, musician, humanitarian, patriot and man than little Luke could ever dream of being. There are legends and then there are wannabes. Little Luke will always be a wannabe. He just doesn’t have what it takes to live through what Waylon and the boys lived through, take what was learned and turn that into beautiful, heartfelt music that has the power to change someone’s life. Out of those “gutters” came some of the most caring, empathetic men who related to their fans in a way not many ever do. Luke can only wish he could find one of those gutters. But, he never will. Only legends live to tell about those places. RIP Waylon, Merle, Johnny….and, thank you.

How dare that county singer wanna be disrespect the king of outlaw music!! He makes me so sick with his nasty humping and gyrating on stage. Our old county kings were gentlemen. You’d never catch them acting vulgar on stage like that. I’m not a prude. I just know class when I see it and it ain’t Luke Bryan. He couldn’t hold Waylons jock strap!!! Him along with so many other newcomers just are not country. My opinion.

We all stumble, we all fall, some overcome, some don’t. I have worked in bands, I have written music, and I have never touched cocaine, but my splash is a drip compared to Waylon’s mark on the industry. What we do, if we fall, its no body’s business but our own and God’s. What we accomplish goes out to all. Waylon? He was great, what an impression he made on me, and I am very thankful for that. He made it possible for this underage teen to leave school and work a honky tonk during the outlaw era, he made the entire industry thrive. I have no idea what he went through everyday and every night, but I know what he accomplished. I’ll stand in his corner anytime.

Waylon was a great musician, he paved the way like she said. Drugs will always be around and I’m sure there are a lot of people in music who use and hide them. He was truthful about them and overcome it. He was a true man, Waylon and the boys, and the outlaw men will always be the greatest in country music. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
