Willie Nelson Doesn’t Owe You a Damn Thing
An inordinate amount of people seem to be angry about Willie Nelson’s cancellation of a show this weekend in North Carolina as part of the the Outlaw Music Fest tour, even more so than normally emerge after a concert cancellation, including people who weren’t even there. Shows and tours get canceled all the time for a host of different reasons, and Willie Nelson is 85-years-old. Why all of a sudden is anger overriding concern for the well-being of the greatest living country music legend on the planet, and one of the most well-respected Americans who has ever lived? How with one cancellation did Willie Nelson burn through over six decades of good will?
You first have to put yourself in the shoes of a concertgoer at the PNC Music Pavillion on Saturday night. You’ve been hanging out in the hot weather all day, paying jacked up prices for embellished concessions for hours. Your back is stiff. Your feet are tired. When you purchased tickets originally, you thought Elvis Costello and Brandi Carlile were also going to play the bill, and they eventually canceled and were replaced with undercard acts. Then you sat or stood waiting for Willie Nelson 45 minutes after he was supposed to start playing only to see him saunter on stage, throw his hat out into the crowd, and then saunter off. Then you waited another hour like a cow in a stockade before you were finally told officially Willie Nelson would not be performing that night. And you were mad as hell.
This isn’t just the case of a canceled show and a rescheduled date or reimbursed ticket. This was a festival. Many folks drove from hours away to attend the event. Some flew in for the festivities. Many purchased hotel accommodations, lined up babysitters, took vacation time off, spent the one opportunity they had all year to splurge on entertainment to see someone they may never get to see perform again. It was Memorial Day weekend, and there were a myriad of other options of how to spend the holiday. And instead of Outlaw Fest being a release valve for life’s infinite pressures by delivering a night of fond memories, it was one of disappointment, and drama, brought to a steaming boil by the way it all appeared to be handled.
Many conspiracy theories are swirling around about just why Willie Nelson decided he wasn’t playing music Saturday night. But the actual explanation is incredibly simple. There were no technical difficulties. Willie Nelson wasn’t angry at anyone. It wasn’t due to curfew restrictions. It was all because Willie Nelson was physically unable to perform due to an apparent stomach bug so bad that he just did not have the intestinal fortitude to fight through it.
But he tried. He gave all his 85-year-old body could give. That is why he came out on stage. Twice. That’s why they didn’t tell the crowd he was canceling, because he was too stubborn to face the reality that he was too sick to perform, and kept trying to fight through it. But he just couldn’t go (or couldn’t stop going, perhaps). And nobody was more angry about it than him. Because he’s Willie Nelson. He wants to perform for you. He’s said many times before he wants to die on stage. He just didn’t want it to be Saturday night.
Willie Nelson wasn’t angry at the promoters, the sound guys, the venue, or anyone else. He was angry at the situation. The very next evening he was playing at The Anthem in Washington D.C. as part of Outlaw Fest once again, and according to fans and video, Willie put on a quality performance. He was still breathy in moments of songs, but he’s 85-years-old. Of course if you missed out on Willie Saturday night, the news of his quick recovery may be of little consolation. It may even infuriate you because you missed your chance. But if your heart is where it is supposed to be—which is showing sincere concern for the well-being of Willie Nelson instead of your own selfish concerns—you should be happy he bounced back.
You have every right to be angry if you were in Charlotte Saturday night to see Willie Nelson perform, but you have no right to be angry at Willie Nelson. This guy has been nothing but a warhorse for country music, an advocate for the American farmer, an Elder Statesman of the United States, and the champion of countless other causes over his career. He served in the military. You purchase a ticket to see any 85-year-old performer, you’re running a risk. They may be unfit to take the stage. They may die before the date ever comes. But you still pull the trigger on tickets because you may never have the opportunity to see them again.
Years from now, people will be bragging how they saw Willie Nelson come out on stage in Charlotte just throw his hat in the crowd. Others will be jealous they weren’t there to see it first hand. Still others will lie and say they were there, when in truth they were 1,000 miles away sipping cheap beer on their back porch. Because what happened Saturday night will become another piece of Willie Nelson lore. Even in defeat, Willie Nelson made the moment memorable.
We saw this same late-career pattern happen with Merle Haggard, with George Jones, and countless others. Everyone says they should hang it up instead of going out with a whimper. But the performers would rather die than not play. Playing shows is the only thing that keeps them alive. If they retired, they would die sooner. It’s the only life they know. It’s painful to watch, but beautiful to witness. It’s performers doing what they were put on the earth to do, until they die.
If you get caught on the wrong end of a cancellation, it can be incredibly frustrating, and understandably so. But dammit, appreciate the gift that is every waking moment we get to share this earth with a legend like Willie Nelson, now more than ever as those moments become increasingly fleeting by the day. Willie has given it his all, and then some. He doesn’t owe you anything.
Tickets can be refunded. Shows can be rescheduled. But nothing will ever replace Willie Nelson.

I had ticket to see Merle Hagard & Willie play. Merle Haggard passed away before the concert. That is like getting pissed off at Merle! I am so sad that I never got to see them perform together. At least Willie is still with us! Stuff happens! Get over it!
May 29, 2018 @ 3:51 pm
Get over what??? Do you not know how to read? Or do you not understand what I said? Maybe you should read it again and think about what it.

May 30, 2018 @ 2:31 pm
Beautifully said. My husband and I were there Saturday night in Charlotte and were grateful to catch even a glimpse of such a legend.
May 29, 2018 @ 7:59 am
They don’t make them like him anymore.
May 29, 2018 @ 8:09 am
“He’s said many times before he wants to die on stage. He just didn’t want it to be Saturday night.”
I don’t think he would have died of what ailed him had he tried to perform Saturday. I think it would be more like “While he’s said many times before he wants to die on stage, you can’t blame him for not wanting to crap his pants on stage”.
May 29, 2018 @ 8:23 am
I agree Willie Nelson owes me nothing. But when only 2/5 of the advertised acts actually manage to perform, the promoters certainly do. I have never seen a more poorly executed promotion in my 30+ years of concert-going.
May 29, 2018 @ 8:53 am
The show will be rescheduled. Often as part of rescheduling, ticket holders are also given the option to take a refund if they so choose. Do folks just not understand how concert cancellations work?
“Due to illness, Willie Nelson was unable to play tonight at the Outlaw Music Festival at PNC Music Pavilion Charlotte. Fans are asked to please hold on to their tickets until the new date is announced.”
Nobody has been short-changed here, only inconvenienced. Yes it completely sucks to have your plans blown up. Yes this show turned out to be a fiasco with all the cancellations. I have very publicly here questioned Blackbird Presents for their use of the term “Outlaw,” the way they curate their events seeming to be clueless of the tastes of actual country fans in the past….
https://savingcountrymusic.com/the-curious-curation-of-country-musics-recent-tribute-concerts/
…but I just can’t see what they did wrong here, or how things could have been done differently. The cancellations were due to unforeseen circumstances completely out of their control. The date will be made up. And if it isn’t I’ll be the first to be calling Blackbird Presents to the mat for it.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:49 am
Maybe using the word “Outlaw” in acts booked to perform in a venue with a strict 11 pm curfew? I don’t think Outlaws take kindly to being told when to shut down.
May 29, 2018 @ 11:57 am
I’ve been to over 1000 shows in my time (yes, old) and know well how they work. Every aspect of promotion and execution was botched on this one, starting with simple communication. (Anyone who didn’t follow the Live Nation event on FB showed up not even knowing about the lineup changes.)
I’m not even mad and the remedy is simple – give me my $135/seat back and I’ll buy new tickets if/when Willie can make it back. This “Hold onto your tickets and we’ll hold on to your money until we get around to rescheduling something” stuff is bullshit. They breached the ticket contract to begin with by replacing 2 nationally recognized acts with regional nobody’s and it’s on them to remedy it.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:46 pm
I feel like these are two separate stories: Willie’s illness and cancellation, and the lack of organization with Blackbird Presents. And unfortunately, a lot of people are lumping blame on Willie as the figurehead as opposed to Blackbird who are the people in charge. Last year I wrote a 27-paragraph dissertation on Blackbird Presents and a lot of the strange issues with them, and trust me, at the time it got me a lot of sideways glances and angered a lot of folks (https://savingcountrymusic.com/the-curious-curation-of-country-musics-recent-tribute-concerts/).
If Blackbird Presents does not uphold their obligations to ticketholders, then this will be a grave escalation of the concerns with that company. However, seeing how the cancellation just happened, and it was over a holiday weekend and they had an event the next day, I feel like we owe them ample opportunity to make the situation right. And if they don’t, then it will be time to lash out. But it will never be proper to blame Willie. He goes from the bus to the stage, and back to the bus.
May 29, 2018 @ 8:32 am
How dare you!
Willie owes me $50 for a lid in 1974…
Saw him years later and he said he didn’t remember.
I said it was good weed.
We laughed.
I never got paid.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:17 am
That’s a lot for a lid in 1974.
May 29, 2018 @ 11:01 am
Really it was like $30-$35 for a lid here in Illinois. That’s a full 5 finger bag. Unless it was some incredible stuff and you got to “test” it first…..lol Then maybe……….
May 30, 2018 @ 5:18 am
He did say it was good weed.
May 30, 2018 @ 6:59 pm
“Man I remember when a dime bag used to cost a dime…”

May 29, 2018 @ 2:32 pm
Well written article! We Love ya Willy!!!
May 29, 2018 @ 2:33 pm
Must not have been real good if you remember
May 29, 2018 @ 3:11 pm
If you fronted a lid in 1974, hopefully learning why we don’t do that was kind of like a payment.
May 29, 2018 @ 3:34 pm
$50? For a lid (oz), in ‘74? You overcharged him, as the best was $20 then!!!
May 29, 2018 @ 6:38 pm
Will Nelson has given several years of wonderful entertainment . We should be thanking him for those many years that he have given too us.
May 29, 2018 @ 8:44 am
As someone who was at the concert, I agree completely with the sentiments in the article. I was disappointed when Elvis cancelled, disappointed again when Brandi cancelled, and kind of annoyed when they weren’t replaced by acts of comparable stature. Communication from the promoter was poor throughout that whole process, not just the night of the show.
Fortunately my lawn seats were only $20 and I’m local so I felt that, while disappointed, I got my money’s worth watching Old Crow and Sturgill put on great shows. My only thought when Willie didn’t come out was to hope that he was ok. I can completely understand however why people that spent a lot more and travelled a lot further were disappointed.
It’s all on the promoters though. The venue has an 11:00pm curfew, it was clear by 10:15 or so that there wasn’t going to be time for him to perform (we actually left well before the announcement), not sure why they kept the crowd wondering for another 20 plus minutes.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:25 am
I think Blackbird Presents has the greatest intentions, but they still seem to be a little green. That said, any promoter can get snake bit if two artists unexpectedly decide to pull out of a show due to personal reasons, and another gets too sick to perform last minute. I agree, they needed to find comparable talent. But last minute that can be very difficult in this very competitive live music environment.
The question now is how the promoters will make it right. They’ve already announced they will reschedule, meaning they’re acknowledging fans did not get their money’s worth.
May 29, 2018 @ 2:07 pm
Agree with you on the refunds and I am planning to hold on and give them the benefit of the doubt to see what they do with the rescheduled dates.
Regarding the artists pulling out – clearly nothing they could do about Willie other than to have handled the announcement to the crowd better. Unfortunate, but glad that it wasn’t a more serious health issue. I’ll also give them the benefit of the doubt on Brandi Carlille, because she pulled out late as well.
Really have difficulty excusing them with Elvis Costello though. He pulled out well over a month before the show, they did nothing to acknowledge that other than dropping his name off the list, and failed to secure a comparable act with a pretty considerable amount of time. IMO, that’s where Blackbird really dropped the ball and dug themselves a hole that just continued to get worse.
If they had replaced Elvis with a solid national act, and they had a number of them committed to other dates on the tour, this isn’t nearly as bad.
July 3, 2018 @ 5:48 pm
Sorry but if you watch the video Willy looks obviously mad as hell. at whatever it is. he turns the guitar over inspecting it and had the energy to throw his hat hard as hell.. he looks angry no disputing this. Unless he was mad at the flu making him sick.if he was that sick he should have had the respect to cancel to keep people from going to lots of trouble.I may be wrong but i dont buy the ‘he wasnt mad at anything.” Show a close up of him in this video. Even the keyboardist looks bewildered as hell that he left.
May 29, 2018 @ 8:57 am
Shit happens. They have the right to be disappointed, but not angry. It’s a risk you take, as was stated. I attended one of Willie’s picnics years ago. Merle Haggard was supposed to be there, but cancelled due to illness. I was disappointed, but not mad at Merle. The one time I did see Merle, he had no opening act and he only played an hour and fifteen minutes. That time, I was a little mad at Merle. Still thankful I got to see him, though.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:39 am
“The one time I did see Merle, he had no opening act and he only played an hour and fifteen minutes.”
first time I saw him he did twenty minutes at a multi-artist benefit show (no one got more time that day). Second time, a yr later, saw him at a StL theater, where the not so well known at the time Judds opened for him, and Tammy Wynette came out mid Merle’s set to duet with him on a song I don’t remember. don”t remember how long he played, but it was the same haggard backing band both times!
May 29, 2018 @ 9:02 am
Amen Kyle well said sir!!!
May 29, 2018 @ 9:03 am
Thank you.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:07 am
I’d have been pissed had I been there. Not at Willie Nelson though. With two of the bigger acts already cancelling you might have already been a bit peeved but consoled yourself that at least you would have Willie so for that to not happen and being made to wait and kept in the dark would have been very frustrating.Maybe that’s why Willie tried to battle through and save what was left of a doomed festival. The most important thing though is the health of the greatest living legend in country music and I’m sure once concert goers have gotten over the time and money wasted they will realise that
May 29, 2018 @ 9:16 am
Willie , Waylon, Johnny & Kris. Owes no one a penny.
You cry BABY’S SHOULD BE GLAD YOU SAW HIM & HAVE HAD THE HONOR TO BE IN HIS PRESENCE !!
LONG LIVE 2 OF THE 2 OF 4 HIGHMEN !!
May 29, 2018 @ 9:20 am
Willie Nelson is like an old farmer. He just can’t hang it up cause he doesn’t know anything else. Retiring just puts you in the ground faster. So what do you do? You soldier on, try to help the next in line get going, and do the best you can with what your body will let you do. I’ve seen it with my old man and countless others in my community. They would rather die with their boots on doing chores than waste away in some retirement home. I don’t think it’s any different with Willie. I’d love to get a chance to see him sometime.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:26 am
Good analogy.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:22 am
Be thankful to see Willie anywhere anytime for any amount of time he’s a true hero and heroes are hard to find nowadays..
July 3, 2018 @ 5:52 pm
Willie is a hero at growing and smoking weed. thats it. A friend of mine saw him in concert once he got mad at people taking pictures and walked off the stage.
May 16, 2021 @ 7:24 am
True heroes don’t beat their wives.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:23 am
Willie Nelson has ALWAYS given everything it takes to help others and share his beautiful music with the world.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:26 am
“How with one cancellation did Willie Nelson burn through over six decades of good will?”
I couldn’t agree more and suspect there aren’t many people who would do so.
But Willie walked off the stage with no explanation.
All he had to do was grab the mic and say he didn’t feel up to it.
I think he made a mistake by not doing that.
I don’t think that what he did (walking off the stage with no explanation whatsoever) qualifies as a “cancellation”.
He will always represent the apotheosis of our genre and movement.
I have listened to him regularly since 1975.
I hope he feels better and plays on as long as he can.
I didn’t even realize this festival was going on in Charlotte this past weekend.
I spent the whole weekend at the race track, except for attending the free Jake Owens concert, of course.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:01 am
This is similar Monday morning quarterbacking as saying Jason Aldean should have screamed “Run!” in Las Vegas before taking shelter in a barrage of bullets. If they for sure knew Willie was not going to take the stage again after he walked off and didn’t announce this to the crowd, then someone should be fired. But ultimately it’s Willie’s call whether he’s performing or not. My guess is he still was hoping to perform.
May 29, 2018 @ 1:36 pm
“This is similar Monday morning quarterbacking as saying Jason Aldean should have screamed “This is similar Monday morning quarterbacking as saying Jason Aldean should have screamed Run!” in Las Vegas before taking shelter in a barrage of bullets.”
No, it’s really not.
Willie was standing next to a mic and chose to not say anything to his fans who had waited for him.
I’m certain he had a great reason for exiting the stage, but he could have told his fans what it was.
May 29, 2018 @ 1:41 pm
There is a comparison. Split second bullet firing decision versus non life threatening illness.
Great, I just defended Aldean. Ugh.
May 30, 2018 @ 1:07 am
Yeah because he totally should have said, “sorry folks I’m about to shit my pants. Gonna run!” LMAO! He was trying to do the show and didn’t want to let people down. Much less he certainly didn’t want to tell everyone he’s about to dirty his drawers
May 29, 2018 @ 9:28 am
Ticket prices need to be refunded though.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:28 am
People get over it he has done his part
May 29, 2018 @ 9:39 am
Id gave everything i have to see my hero throw his hat n walk out be appreciative you had the opportunity to the same as the greatest living legend of country music to date undoubtedly ill nvr have that amazing opportunity GODBLESS WILLIE NELSON AND ALL HIS LOVEDONES MY PRAYERS WILL BE WITH YOU MAY GODSPEDE.
May 29, 2018 @ 9:56 am
There are very few things in this world more sad to me, than to see peasants worshipping celebrities.
Willie Nelson has lived a very luxurious life as a millionaire performer, doing something most people dream of, and this article makes it sound like we should all feel sorry for him. If he wants to perform, fine and dandy. If he doesn’t, also fine and dandy. That’s his business.
To say he doesn’t owe people anything, is a lie. He very literally (not figuratively), in the most literal (not figurative) sense of the word, does in fact (not fiction), owe a lot of folks something. He sold a product that he has yet to provide. Until he either provides it, or provides a refund, he owes. It’s very simple.
Kyle, stop worshipping celebrities man. It’s sad to watch. Enjoy what their product, but don’t worship them.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:24 am
” He sold a product that he has yet to provide. Until he either provides it, or provides a refund, he owes. It’s very simple.”
Have you people NEVER had to deal with a canceled show before? The show will be made up, and/or refunds will be given. Like what ALWAYS happens with cancellations. LiveNation explained as much an hour after Willie threw his hat into the crowd. If they don’t, then that’s an entirely different story. But there’s absolutely no indication that they won’t, and every indication that they will.
Also, Willie Nelson is not the money man here. He just plays the damn shows. Blackbird Presents and LiveNation are the promoters. At the worst, you should be screaming at them, not Willie. But again, there is NO evidence at this point the promoters won’t honor their commitments. LiveNation made $10.4 billion dollars last year. They’re the most profitable music entity in the world. Something tells me they’ve got the scratch, even if they have to eat the Charlotte show to save face.
May 29, 2018 @ 11:25 am
I don’t go to concerts, because I hate people.
But Trigger, let’s be honest. You wrote this article because you love Willie Nelson with all the love your heart can muster, and you got your panties in a bunch because one too many of your beloved readers were mad at him, and ,”how dare anyone be mad at Willie Nelson!?”
Did some folks maybe overreact? Sure. But you didn’t need to go off on this sad, celebrity-worshipping tirade. As long as everyone gets what’s owed them, everything will be fine.
I think you’ve overreacted to the overreaction.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:33 pm
Please.
Far from a “Leave Brittany alone!” moment. Just trying to get people to look big picture.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:49 pm
You don’t go to concerts because you would not be the center of attention. That’s why you have the racist moniker you use and contribute hateful comments. You’re all about you. We get it. Now go away.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:12 pm
Think you should go for a long lie-down in a dark room. Would do you good friend. Hating people ain’t good for the soul.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:04 am
As someone that was there, and paid for really good seats I can tell you Willy looked frustrated he couldn’t perform. I got to see him a few years in a tiny venue in Long Island, NY so I can’t complain too much. I hope he makes t back through, because I’d really like for my wife to have a chance to see him live as well.
On another note, Old Crow was pretty good and my God did Sturgill Simpson put on a show. As we walked back to the car I told every single person that would listen I would have paid the money again just to hear Sturgill wail out Call to Arms and Going Down again.
Sometimes thing don’t turn out how you want, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a way to look on the bright side.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:04 am
Hey Willie,
I hope and pray you are feeling better from songs to words “Don’t let the bastards get you down”.
We all owe you Willie don’t worry about nothing just take care of yourself, you’ve given us more music and memories than life itself has to offer, and it was just dam good to see you! thanks Willie God bless you and your family…..
Your friend David Lee “Farm Aid “
May 29, 2018 @ 10:20 am
I’m so tired of witnessing people complain. Maybe if they smoked a little Willie’s Reserve they would have a different perspective.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:24 am
I wholly agree with this article . Anyone that is angry at Willie Nelson should be ashamed. He has given so much of his life to entertain us.Give this 85 year old ledgen a break.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:34 pm
A break from what? Being a millionaire who has wanted for nothing in 50 years?
May 29, 2018 @ 3:28 pm
Awww, poor Honky is envious…
May 29, 2018 @ 3:51 pm
I’m a capitalist. I’m happy for people who are rich. I don’t feel sorry for them.
May 29, 2018 @ 4:37 pm
I’ve never commented on one of these things, but I’ve been a long time reader. Honkey, you have got to be the most sad, bitter, hateful piece of shit. All you, and couple others on this site, ever do is fill the comment section full of cancer. Seriously man, go outside enjoy the sunshine, play with a puppy, go fishing or something and lighten the fuck up. Musicians are people and shit happens.
May 29, 2018 @ 4:50 pm
Thanks for reading Jonah.
May 29, 2018 @ 5:05 pm
Keep fighting the good fight Trigg
May 29, 2018 @ 4:53 pm
Jonah, come on man, chill out. Read over my comments again. You’re misunderstanding my point.
May 29, 2018 @ 5:19 pm
Jonah’s right. It’s not that you can’t make a good point every once in a while. It’s that you don’t know how to pick your battles, and love to revel in a pit of negativity and bring everyone else down in it with you when it’s completely inappropriate.
May 29, 2018 @ 5:34 pm
I’m not reveling. And if you perceive me as negative, it’s because you either disagree with, or are offended by something I’ve said.
If you get brought down by an anonymous person on the internet, then I firmly believe that’s a you problem. I’m not battling, and I don’t strategically decide when to leave comments. I comment when I feel compelled to. I went 7 days straight last week without commenting on anything, because I wasn’t compelled to comment.
You all are so blinded by your love for Willie, that you’ve mostly missed my point on this topic.
May 29, 2018 @ 6:14 pm
I honestly don’t believe you have a point. I’m sick of seeing the devisive bullshit in this comments. If it’s not being upset about an artists political views, then you’re upset that their sound has a little more of a rock edge to it. We are all on the same side and want to make country music better. That will never be done if we are so segregated. I believe a lot of the readers of this site are so used to losing that we don’t know how to win anymore. We should be happy that we have guys like Isbell, Stapleton, Cody jinks, and Sturgill. Those guys are paving the way for the Tyler Childers and Colter Walls of the world. Be glad that we have all these wonderful artists and legends like Willie Nelson to enjoy. Country music sure would be shitty without them and every night that they are out there playing country music, I consider that a win for our side. Anyway, have a good night listening to your Hank Williams vinyls. I’m sure you could find something to complain about with those too.
May 30, 2018 @ 5:28 am
All great points, Jonah. Unfortunately, those artists you listed aren’t country in the world of Honky. Go figure…
May 29, 2018 @ 6:40 pm
Jonah,
I strongly advise you to get a grip on the reality that the world is full of people who disagree with you, on a variety of things, and that they have opinions too.
Do you really think I’m a piece of shit?
May 30, 2018 @ 8:19 am
I’m fully aware that the world is full of differing opinions. However, you are a contrarian just for the sake of being a contrarian. I’ve watched you and others be complete shit heads in these comment sections for years. The guy is 85 years old and wasn’t feeling well. He’s doing a job that is hard on 20 year olds. Regardless of how wealthy Willie Nelson is, his job is very physically demanding. Anyways, I just felt like commenting because I’ve been reading this site for 2+ years and seeing the negativity towards the good guys on our side gets old. The comments on this site are on the verge of becoming a cancerous cesspool just like YouTube and Facebook and it pains me to see that because I love this site and all of the great things it has opened me up to musically. Have a great day honky boy!
May 30, 2018 @ 4:49 pm
You disagree with people just because you can. You’re a contrarian. You live to troll this site. When you’re not jacking off to internet porn that is.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:32 am
Music fans owe Willie Nelson a great debt.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:33 am
I’m not hating on Willie, but I’m not sure how “we all owe him”. I have paid my own money for every Willie album, track and concert. That is his job and he’s good at it and it has made him a wealthy man. Likewise, Willie or any other musician have never provided anything to me free of charge so I’m not sure how we owe him.
May 29, 2018 @ 10:51 am
There are a few artists who’s output gives us much more entertainment value than the $15-$25 we pay for an occasional cd/album and $10-$50 for an occasional show. I can think of some artists who have given me 100s of hours listening experience which outweighs the little bit coming out of my wallet. Willie falls in that category for a lot of people so that’s why we still all owe him despite buying the occasional merch. As far as getting free stuff from musicians, I’ve had that experience more times than I can count. It usually results from striking up a conversation before or after a show and thanking them for what they’re doing.
May 30, 2018 @ 5:59 pm
Ever heard of showing a music legend a little respect Cory Holdren?? When you die that will be the end for you. Willie’s contribution to country music will LIVE ON FOREVER. You whine like a little girl. smh
May 29, 2018 @ 11:03 am
We stand behind Willie!
May 29, 2018 @ 11:18 am
We’ve seen Willie Nelson perform twice in the last 5 years. Once in Saratoga Ny and I once at Radio City in Nyc.
I notice this at both performances. He gives you 4 times more music per performance than other headliners.
This is what we as a family noticed at each performance.
He come on and just starts singing.
There is no patter no chatter. No introducing of musicians. He starts with a long set and then Very quickly introduces the band- almost in passing and then goes straight into the next long set.
He doesn’t spend much time talking or telling stories or making joke. He goes right to the music and keeps it moving
His performance are all about delivering the music.
To do this at any age is remarkable much less when you’re in your 80’s.
He does give you everything he has.
The criticism and whining is really uncalled for.
May 29, 2018 @ 11:30 am
Thank you Willie. We love you. The year was 1969, and when I went to your dances you were only 15 feet away. I do not need your concerts, for you are a part of me.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:35 pm
I saw him in 75(?) at the Chilympiad in San Marcos- he played for a girl from the audience while the band took a break. I liked him before that but respected him from then on- the man in THE Master at musical entertainment. His picture should be ALL the Encyclopedia’s have in the “wandering minstrel” category.
May 29, 2018 @ 11:47 am
Hammer, meet nail. Nail, hammer.
May 30, 2018 @ 5:30 am
I’d rather be a hammer than a nail. Thank you, Paul Thorn.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:06 pm
Some people are just dicks
May 29, 2018 @ 12:10 pm
Let me tell you people something I bet you people if you really love willie wouldn’t ask for refund if willie would have died what difference does it make. IF IT RAINS ON YOUR PAREADE DO you ask God for a refund .No you just go on to the next day and hope your blessed .I do
May 29, 2018 @ 12:11 pm
I love. MY WILLIE. I would give all my time to wait and just see him at concert or maybe catch his hat. That would be wonderful .So it’s like this leave my Willie number 1 alone.Willie you are always on my. Mind. Hope you feel better soon.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:14 pm
Also…
I would rather see Willie Nelson not singing than faking it by limp sing (hello Garth Brooks and many others).
May 29, 2018 @ 12:15 pm
*then
May 30, 2018 @ 5:12 am
Maybe you meant “lip synch”….
May 29, 2018 @ 12:50 pm
Agree with all of this, except we can’t forget about Loretta Lynn when discussing the greatest living country music legend on the planet.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:53 pm
One day, hopefully not too soon, Willie’s time will come to go home to Luckenbach were ain’t nobody feelin’ no pain. Until that day, LONG LIVE THE RED HEADED STRANGER.
May 29, 2018 @ 12:54 pm
Elvis died shortly before he was supposed to perform in CT. Nobody got mad at that they cried and sent condolences. Guess nobody has ever been so sick they couldn’t make it to work. Most people in Willie’s shoes wouldn’t have even shown up. Remember the good not the bad like everyone chooses to do.
May 29, 2018 @ 3:31 pm
This is the point i was going to make – hasnt everyone been sick for work before? OR showed up thinking they could power through it but then realized they couldnt and went home?
And when that happens you tell your boss and your boss handles the communication – you dont personally make that announcement to everyone you work with and all your clients.
May 29, 2018 @ 1:37 pm
I don’t owe Willie anything off the stage and he doesn’t owe me anything off the stage.
But that doesn’t mean people can’t question his divinity.
If I pay for a ticket, gas fare, hotel room etc to attend a concert, I am going to demand a good performance. It is his job. And if he can’t, refunds are in order. If I go to a restaurant, I expect the waiter and chef to perform. Same goes for singers.
This article, while I appreciate the sentiment, is an overreaction. Nelson can be questioned.
May 29, 2018 @ 2:31 pm
“I am going to demand a good performance. It is his job”
I guess you’ve worked your whole life and never had to leave your JOB because you were too sick to continue that day? Who are you to demand? Willie would have performed Saturday night if he could have – of that we’re all sure of. He was sick! The article was to explain that. Too bad it when over your head.
May 29, 2018 @ 2:49 pm
More than anything else, these comments are revealing just how ignorant some folks are about how the music business works. Demanding a refund from Willie Nelson is tantamount to asking your waiter to cook your food, or the cook to run your credit card. Or if your order was wrong, demanding a refund from the bussboy.
Willie Nelson doesn’t have anything to do with your refund.
May 29, 2018 @ 6:34 pm
In terms of broad~strokes, I find this particular response to a comment to be the “flag~ship of the armada” ~ the most significant point of the several made by the writer. After experiencing the bummer it was to read that Willie Nelson was too ill to perform…. then reading a good many of the comments…. well, Trigger is imparting some wisdom here. What some saw as celebrity worship between the lines, I read as grave respect for a beloved artist who has plied his craft for more than half a century…. and who has earned the regard that his fans have for the entertainment (…. and more to the point, the inspiration) he has unselfishly provided, as much as can be the case for any musician, anywhere…. I’ve worked in live music for almost 30 years, and have been fortunate enough to have been a promoter’s production manager for three Willie Nelson performances in the past decade…. I’ve worked as part of a rank-and-file local crew for at least a half-dozen more…. running a spotlight, paging center stage camera cable for the operator at a Farm Aid…. on down to schlepping a lot of heavy gear…. As a PM, I advanced every production detail for those shows, from performance times, to local crew requirements, to semi & tour bus movements, to the minestrone soup that was always a specific requirement as part of the touring band/crew’s lunch menu. The whole shooting match…. I had to go through the quite specific nuts and bolts of putting on a Willie Nelson concert with a half-dozen members of his touring staff, each of whom knew EXACTLY what they were doing. Willie’s people are SO good (as in lengendary…. ) at what they do…. they’ve been doing what they do for multiple decades, working as a cohesive family business responsible for the smooth running of a well-oiled machine that just so happens to have a lot of moving parts. They’re good people who happen to be REALLY good at what they do…. their work is a labor of love, not a “you pay for this & they give you that ” ~ kinda thing. I feel nothing but gratitude for being able to work with this artist and his people ~ and concern for the man’s health and respect for his having to make what is for him, of the toughest sort of conundrum he ever has to crack, completely calls rank on anything on the piss & moan laundry list…. How about having some faith that the reschedule/refund etc details will end up coming up correct, because this artist always comes correct? How about delaying getting ones bitch on to savor what Sturgill Simpson laid down, or loosening up enough to enjoy the energy of the Old Crow set? Don’t let an inconvenience make you act like a petulant ingrate, would you please? BC when you do, you just display how little you understand the order of things and how on point Trigger’s ring-true story really is….
May 30, 2018 @ 8:18 am
Trigger,
You have never been to the pizza shop near my old college, the chef took your order, ran the credit card and cooked the food!
May 30, 2018 @ 10:36 am
Something tells me that pizza shop wasn’t trying to serve 20,000 people at one time like Willie Nelson was Saturday night.
May 30, 2018 @ 8:34 pm
He should have issued a statement to his fans. That’s all. Not a statement from the promoter, from him. Done. Too much for a legend?
May 29, 2018 @ 2:09 pm
F*%k them all Willie,You have been such an icon dor so lonf, you don’t deserve this kind of treatment from hatwers claiming themselves to be your FANS! I was part of the stage crew n Little Rock, AR and was tryinto trade my cowboy hat with you,it almost worked but Icould not reach far enough to get it. Love you and you are the musical icon.Bless you! Get better soon! You are the MAN, and will always be the only maan!!!! To hell with all those greedy bastards!!!! With all my love and hopes a quick recovery. Let the music stay in your heart.
May 29, 2018 @ 3:16 pm
Shame on you Charlotte! It’s not like he did it on purpose… Love yer Willie….be a true fan of our Texas legend….✌
May 29, 2018 @ 4:39 pm
Thank you Willie for the many year’s of music you have given us, I pray for many more, I remember going to Greensboro to the fiddler’s conversation In the 1980’s to see you. I got the message in my email you were sick, so I knew the possibility of you not making the fest could happen. So my prayer go out to my long time music idol for his recovery, love you Willie, your friend
May 29, 2018 @ 4:50 pm
the man is 85 years old if he doesn’t feel like performing a concert he can cancel I’ll listen to his music as long as he can perform stop whining you big babies you’re lucky the man still performs he doesn’t need the money just saying
May 29, 2018 @ 4:58 pm
There’s nobody like Willie. A true legend.
May 29, 2018 @ 5:05 pm
I am a black 70 year old female and wanted to say thank you Willie for all the many years and good times you have given to the world! It comes a time in life when things happen to the best of us that we have no control over and I truly understand. (More than anything, it is my hope and my prayer that you get better Willie). God bless you!
May 29, 2018 @ 5:06 pm
I have loved Willie for as long as I can remember. Lots of love to Willie and his family
May 29, 2018 @ 5:21 pm
Why do people think that artists own them more than the product they are selling. Sometimes the product is out of stock on any particular day. Yes it’s dissappointing, but deal with it! No one owns you anything, ever!
May 29, 2018 @ 5:26 pm
I would wait in rain, heat and snow to see Willie He is a real hero and a gentleman who would never not perform unless he had a real reason, like a stomach bug. Give him a break. We have loved him for many years and hope to have him with us for many more years. He puts on a fantastic show, even now in his golden years. I have seen some of his shows and they last two or three hours, with Willie on every song. Hopefully, Willie willl be with us for many many more concerts. Even if he only did shows in Texas, I would be there. Love this man and his music.
May 29, 2018 @ 5:41 pm
“How with one cancellation did Willie Nelson burn through over six decades of good will?”
Simple people these days are addicted to outrage and any place they can let it show is fair game whether it makes sense or not. That’s my take.
May 29, 2018 @ 6:57 pm
I’ve been a fan of Willie since the first time I saw him in 1976! He was so good to his fans Staying back and joking and talking after a concert. I’ve seen him do that many times since! We don’t worship him but we do love him!
May 29, 2018 @ 7:22 pm
My family and I love u Willie,,We wear praying for u then and now…We hope you and your loved ones are doing well, Thank u from the bottom of my heart for all the years of great music!! We will always owe u Willie…
May 29, 2018 @ 7:33 pm
This writer is full of shit, trying to stir up some anger when it’s total bullshit. There’s no immediate amount of pissed off fans mad because Willie cancelled. When reporters embellish the truth like this, they call it a “narrative.” You’ll notice there aren’t any other articles about all these phantom pissed off concert goers. Such bull. Try again dude. And quit playing with people’s minds. Just write the damn story straight up. We don’t need phony originality.
May 29, 2018 @ 7:44 pm
Are you kidding me?
May 30, 2018 @ 4:47 pm
I don’t think he is, which makes it all the more insane on his part.
May 29, 2018 @ 7:52 pm
Fuck the public
Willie is God
May 29, 2018 @ 11:13 pm
Whatever it takes to keep Willie healthy is what he needs to do! Get well Willie, your a National treasure❤
May 29, 2018 @ 11:54 pm
I’ve urchased tickets to 4 different Willy Nelson concerts 70s to present and have yet to see him perform. Only one concert did I get money refunded, but still got stuck with $178 hotel reservation. Yes, he owes
May 30, 2018 @ 12:10 am
Willie Nelson is on a short list of singers whom shall not be disrespected.
Willie
Waylon
Guy Clark
Say a bad word about any of them and I’ll fight you anytime, anywhere.
May 30, 2018 @ 7:08 am
No, you won’t.
May 30, 2018 @ 4:45 pm
Yes, I will.
Bro, don’t you have a Mo Pitney concert to get to?
May 30, 2018 @ 1:48 am
Willie owes U nothing ..lids back in 74 were only 8 to 10 dollars ..a sandwich bag stuffed full….get real ..u pretending fools..
May 30, 2018 @ 2:26 am
Glad he was OK, just a stomach virus. I saw him a couple of years ago in Miami, OK. He gave a great performance, people needs to be understanding, they would probably call in if they had stomach virus. Willie tried to complete concert. He is a true performer, I wish him well, Love him and his music.
May 30, 2018 @ 2:33 am
We do not owe you nothing.I am Native and Willie Nelson has helped in countless ways STFU
May 30, 2018 @ 3:20 am
Drove truck Long Haul Wildcat’n for 34 years. Many a long lonely mile, just me , the rig and Willie on the tape deck or radio. Made the miles not so long and it was like I had a cup of coffee and company the whole night! Love ya Brother! ! thanks for the memories!!!
May 30, 2018 @ 3:39 am
He’s 85. He has spent most of his life entertaining you! Suppose after all the anger, cussing, fuming and in general acting poorly, the headlines the next day had read; willie Nelson dead at 85? Wonder what anyone else would have done with a stomach bug? I suppose you can approach his casket when he dies and try to demand an explanation as to why he dared to get sick when you bought a ticket. Go get your refund and get on with life.
May 30, 2018 @ 5:08 am
Still trying to figure out why Elvis Costello was scheduled at an Outlaw concert
May 30, 2018 @ 5:34 am
If he was sick, then he should have canceled before scheduled time to go on. But then what do you expect from a weedhead.
May 30, 2018 @ 2:42 pm
That “Weedhead” is more successful than you’ll ever be, Kristy. Maybe you need a joint to chill out.
May 30, 2018 @ 6:22 am
Great article. I’m thankful many of the country musicians like Willie are still part of the country music scene. Dolly. Loretta Lynn and so forth.
May 30, 2018 @ 6:36 am
Well put ! Those that are mad at Willie need to look at themselves and grow up. This man has given his whole life to his fans and would never let him down on purpose !
I love you Willie and I hope that you are feeling better.
Long Live Willie you are a special man and I have the utmost respect for you.
May 30, 2018 @ 6:37 am
Not trying to derail the conversation here but what happened with Costello & Brandi Carlile? I’d guess they all passed a bug around or something but I guess if I bought tickets it wouldn’t be just Willie that I would be disappointed about not seeing play. Only 2 out of the 5 main performers played. That would be the biggest disappointment to me but understandable if they are all sick.
May 30, 2018 @ 6:37 am
Let he or she that has never taken a sick day go get stoned sorry I meant cast the first stone
May 30, 2018 @ 7:06 am
I love Willie Nelson he doesn’t owe anyone he’s paid his dues he could have been sick he isn’t young M
May 30, 2018 @ 7:10 am
I’ve got no quarrels with Willie. The promoters, however . . . I had tickets for the show. I receive tons on emails from LiveNation all of the time, and Blackbird Presents had my email as well. I never received any communication about Elvis or Brandi dropping out of the show. So it was a total surprise to show up in Charlotte the day of the show and go to the Blackbird website to find out the order of performance and see that neither EC nor BC were in the line-up. It seems like the promoters did their best to keep this news from ticket holders.
May 30, 2018 @ 10:38 am
Blackbird Presents handled this poorly, and each hour that ticks by and they don’t offer clarification on how they’re going to make this right adds to the injury. This is the concern for Blackbird presented by this site in the past coming to fruition. That said, we still should giove them an opportunity to make it right.
May 30, 2018 @ 1:56 pm
Trigger – FYI LiveNation announced today that the show is rescheduled for 6/20. It sucks a little trading a Friday night for a Wednesday but I’m happy they were able to get it done.
May 30, 2018 @ 8:37 am
Are you criticizing the author of a site devoted to country music for loving Willie Nelson?
May 30, 2018 @ 8:58 am
Yes he does. Paying customers bought tickets. If he cannot do the job, he needs to retire. All he is doing is making money for people before he dies. It’s disgusting yet somehow very American. But he owes everyone who bought tickets because he agreed to play.
May 30, 2018 @ 9:15 am
Thanks, Willie for what you have given us over the y ears.. You don’t owe us anything, we owe YOU.
May 30, 2018 @ 10:20 am
Willie Nelson has entertained us for years now he needs our love and support. Willie Nelson we love you and wish you the best.
May 30, 2018 @ 10:24 am
Willie Nelson we love you and wish you the best. You always came through for us now we all need to come through for you. Love you always
May 30, 2018 @ 11:41 am
Easy on our Hero…cry babies.
May 30, 2018 @ 1:56 pm
Willie Nelson is 85 years old now.he’s getting tired more than he did before I think it’s coming to much for him to handle anymore.
May 30, 2018 @ 2:11 pm
Dam is that you Billy ? Billy !!!! Have you ever lived in TX,Colo. Ever worked on thetx. highways ? Oh yea I rode my scooter down to Carl’s corner for a Willie Nelson Fourth ofJuly picnic. In 1987. I had thought my brother had left without me so I hit the gas and was there in no time ! Spent all day in the TX heat and sun, like I did most of my life here in TX. Dam I wonder if Willie would be mad if he knew I left early before he ever took the stage. (I found my bro. at home when I returned never left Dallas). GOD BLESS WILLIE NELSON !!!!!!! AND GOD BLESS TEXAS !!!
May 31, 2018 @ 1:04 am
This article is a prime example of why i love this site
May 31, 2018 @ 8:36 am
he also cancelled here in central florida a couple months ago….don’t ever count on an 85 years old person….on a side note….this is the funniest site I have ever seen….Y’all make fun of travis tritt and garth brooks
December 5, 2018 @ 2:54 am
Have seen Willie 7 times over the years. First time July 3, 1977. This man is a true entertainer.has done more than most will ever do to make this world better for everyone. How can anyone be angry at an 85 year old man for being ill. People, get over yourselves. Love you Willie.
November 25, 2019 @ 7:12 pm
Crazy to even see Willie is performing and going on tour while he is in his mid 80s.
