Zach Bryan: “[Tyler] Childers is Ten Fold the Musician I Am”

Ever since the very beginning of the Zach Bryan phenomenon about two years ago when the full-time Navy enlistee turned a couple of viral videos and then a homespun recording project called DeAnn into a viral songwriting phenomenon, the loudest criticism of this young man has been that he’s just too similar to Tyler Childers to be considered unique, or even genuine in some people’s minds.
At first it made for worthy and interesting discussion points, but as time has dragged on the argument has become quite derivative, and is probably unfair to both artists who to a trained ear, are fundamentally different in style and approach, despite some stylistic surface similarities.
Well on Tuesday (7-27), Zach Bryan shut down one of his own fans who was coming to the defense of him over the “too much like Tyler Childers” allegations, and hopefully shut down the side-by-side comparisons for good.
“Zach Bryan is better than Tyler, some of you guys are in denial. Tyler does nothing better than Zach,” the fan said on Twitter.
Zach Bryan responded, “Childers is ten fold the musician I am and I will never say otherwise. I can’t express it enough that music is not for comparing, its just stories and people trying to sing what their hearts feel. I’m barely even a musician and my pet peeve is the constant comparison of everything.”
Early on when Zach Bryan was blowing up, Saving Country Music asked him specifically about the Tyler Childers criticism and comparisons. “I say thank you, because that’s what my life’s been about, and that songwriting has gotten me through my hardest stories … This was not a plan of mine. Music was not on my radar. But the fact that people are criticizing me makes me feel lucky, that people care enough to criticize. That’s neat. I never thought I would be in a place where enough people had heard my music to criticize it. I feel blessed about that.”
Zach Bryan also went on to point out that most of the songs from his debut album DeAnn were written five years previous after the death of his mother, and before barely anyone knew of Tyler Childers.
Meanwhile Zach Bryan is getting ready to play a rare performance at the Born & Raised Fest, actually a couple of them both September 17th as part of the pre-party, and then on September 19th on the same night Cody Jinks headlines. As far as new music, Zach recently said, “Keep the patience up guys, trying to make this one count.”
The comparisons will likely continue, but Zach Bryan continues to take the right stance and the right candor to the comparisons and criticism, giving all deference to Tyler Childers, while also underscoring that his music is his own story set to song, and nobody else’s, for better or worse.

I guess I can see why folks might make the comparison on a surface level…
But Tyler’s a sprout of Appalachia…
Zach’s very Okie.
If you look at their roots and traditions, you can see how vastly they differ.
They’re both awesome, so ultimately who gives a damn? Tyler, get Zach on a tour!

Let a THOUSAND of these fellas bloom!

Man, I’m barely keeping up with as many as there are now, who’d follow a thousand?!

Bryan is playing Railbird Fest in Lexington, KY at the end of August as well. He’s on for Sunday the 29th alongside Tanya Tucker and Colter Wall. Isbell and DMB are headlining that night.
Should be a helluva time.
July 29, 2021 @ 3:52 am
I imagine Isbell goes on political rants every 2 or 3 songs or so…

Haha I’ve seen him a few times. He really doesn’t talk much between songs at shows, usually just short quips and jokes, definitely nothing resembling his Twitter activism.

“Zach Bryan is better than Tyler, some of you guys are in denial. Tyler does nothing better than Zach,”. Replace the names with Taylor and Carrie and it sounds like an argument 13 year old girls were having 10 years ago.

Slow news day, but not really. Dusty Hill passed away.

There are no slow news days, and this article wasn’t published because it was one, or in replacement for acknowledging the passing of Dusty Hill, which broke after this article was published.

One of my favorite things about Zach Bryan so far is how humble and just normal he seems. His Instagram stories are entertaining and he just seems like a normal kid not unlike like me and my friends. There’s a lot of singers out there who would’ve responded a lot differently, saying “I’m nothing like Childers, shut the fuck up and pay attention to the music,” but Bryan handled it with class.

Every song this guy plays sounds like “Hey there delilah” by the plain white tees, played in a minor key. This isn’t a good thing….

^Tell me you’ve never listened to a Zach Bryan song without saying you’ve never listened to a Zach Bryan song.
(I’m impressed, this beats the Childers comps, on that scale of ignorance!)

Pretty different. This Cole Chaney guy, on the other hand…

Nobody compares Zach Bryan to Tyler Childers based on the content of their lyrics or similarities of songwriting. It’s his blatant rip-off of the way he sings, pronunciation of words, etc. 90% of country artists sing about the same things. That’s not the issue. Childers voice was unique and Bryan does a poor cover job of it to try and capitalize.

I think Zach has a story and a song. I am not enamored with the delivery however. What the heck, Ole’ Kris couldn’t sing his way out of an outhouse but he dang sure had a story and song. Best to Zach.

So:
Have you never listened to Red Dirt or Texas Country?
Or
Is Feathered Indians the only Childers song you know?
As someone who owns every album by both artists…those are the two reasonable explanations for this comment.
Unless you’re tone/pitch deaf?

Both are worse than Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen…..just teasing, I was tempted to start a firestorm on a slow news Wednesday! Tyler lives near me; if anybody earned his place in music; it’s him. He absolutely played every single place someone would let him for years. He said he played in a mall food court to 3-4 people in West Virginia not long before he blew up. Zach is great in his own way!

Last Saturday at Hinterland was an amazing day. Had some pretty darn good seats (place to sit) to see Zach and then Tyler Childers. I also got to expand my playlist and add Black Pumas and several others. I was blown away. Anyone that’s all into comparing Zach and Tyler Childers, or anyone else for that matter might just consider enjoying the music and dance a little. Also, hats off to the folks at Hinterland for being so kind and working so hard to accommodate the crowd. Finally, can you imagine the mess folks leave behind at a gathering of this size; so, special “great job” goes to the folks picking up trash and hustling to keep up. Great job to all and I’ll keep listening to Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers on repeat. They have to share play time with Black Pumas and Shooter Jennings now though.

Have heard lots of good things about Hinterland. Will have to make it up there at some point.
