2022’s ‘More Country’ CMA Awards See Ratings Boost

There were still plenty of reasons to be repulsed as an actual country music fan while witnessing the 2022 CMA Awards earlier this month. You probably could have done without the Katy Perry/Thomas Rhett collaboration, or watching Old Dominion inexplicably win their 5th Vocal Group of the Year award in a row. Does that group have any actual fans?
But a pretty universal consensus from the country fans who did suffer through the presentation to see the extended Alan Jackson tribute at the end was that in 2022, the CMA Awards seemed to do a 180-degree turn, and started going back in the right direction toward featuring more actual country music. Along with the aforementioned Alan Jackson tribute at the end, a big tribute to Loretta Lynn started the show.
In between, the 2022 CMAs also saw a performance of Chris Stapleton and Patty Loveless singing the country standard “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive,” and Carly Pearce singing her Lynn tribute “Dear Miss Loretta” with Ricky Skaggs and Sonya Isaacs. Ashley McBryde, Brandy Clark, Pillbox Patti, and Brothers Osborne also performed “When Will I Be Loved” made popular by Linda Ronstadt, and there was even a tribute to Jerry Lee Lewis by Elle King.
That speaks nothing to the awards themselves where more country-sounding acts won big awards, including Lainey Wilson walking away with New Artist of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year, Cody Johnson winning Single of the Year and Video of the Year for “Til You Can’t,” and Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde winning Music Event of the Year for “Never Wanted to Be That Girl.”
It was pretty clear there was a concerted effort by the CMA Awards to push more country, and more legendary acts on the presentation. There were also some appearances from artists who typically wouldn’t receive face time on the CMAs from the Americana world, such a The War and Treaty and Marcus King.
So what were the results? The overnight numbers showed that the CMAs saw an 11% rise in ratings year over year, which was the first time the CMAs have seen an actual rise in ratings in years. The story of all of these awards shows has been declining ratings for a decade, exacerbated by the Covid era. But in 2022, the CMA Awards jumped to 7.57 million real-time viewers, up from 6.83 million in 2021.
The longer and more accurate L+7 ratings (live, plus 7 days for people to watch it recorded) were even better, showing a 16% rise year over year, with a total of 9.7 million viewers, up 2.2 million viewers from 2021. So not only did more people watch the CMA Awards live, even more people watched later as positive buzz about the awards lingered. On top of the CMAs stopping a decade-long slump in ratings, the 2022 presentation turned in the awards’ largest audience in three years.
Is this due to the fact that more actual country artists were showcased on the show, or was it due more to broader market conditions in the post Covid era? We don’t know for sure of course, and it’s probably a mix of both. But the fact that so many people watched the CMAs afterwards instead of avoiding it entirely is probably a good sign the 2022 CMAs were well-received.
Awards shows still may be more of a relic of the past as the new generation of consumers cut cords, don’t watch television at all, or couldn’t care less about awards. But fans of artists like Alan Jackson and Loretta Lynn still are very much willing to engage with appointment television and live performances, as long as their sensibilities aren’t insulted by whatever else happens.
Unquestionably, country music is more country in 2022 than in years previous, especially during the height of Bro-Country from 2013-2016, and specifically in the mainstream. The 2022 CMA Awards mirrored that. Even though Bro-Country brought a bunch of interlopers into the genre, it’s the fans of artists such as Lainey Wilson and Cody Johnson that will stick around, be loyal to country music no matter watch, and put the effort out to watch an awards show in the first place.
The proclamation from much of the media was that the 2022 CMA Awards was a trip to the past of the country music genre. But as the ratings seem to indicate, going back to your country roots might also be a path to country music’s brighter future.
As Luke Combs said when he accepted his trophy for Entertainer of the Year, “This is my 5th or 6th year being at this awards show, and country sounded more country than it has in a long time, and I think we all wanted that.”

Award shows are boring and not a good barometer for the best music out there. I’d much rather watch a country artist on Joe Rogan or Theo Von’s podcast. Also ALL of the award shows in the 90’s seemed to get it right. Nearly all the nominated songs stood the test time.

And the American Music Awards (fan-voted) saw their ratings hit an all-time low a week later. That show is all-genre, and the “country” award winners included Taylor Swift’s remade “Red” for top album and Dan + Shay for top duo or group. Yuck.
We’ve got a long (long neck) way to go to completely take back radio — not that it was ever completely “ours” to begin with — but the CMA ratings are a good sign, as is an airplay top 50 that includes Cody Johnson, Hailey Whitters, Parker McCollum, Jelly Roll (although the jury is out on whether he stays country), Drake Milligan, Jon Pardi, Lainey Wilson, Carly Pearce and Chris Stapleton heading into the winter. I’m not quite sure what to make of Bailey Zimmerman, who seems to be the male counterpart of Lainey when it comes to buzz, but his current single is more “yee-haw” than “yee-naw” to me.
Oops, am I allowed to use Grady Smith’s lingo here?

The real question is will the ACMs still be streamed on prime amazon plus?
I bet only 200k ppl watched the Acms this past spring. Compared to the possible 6 million ppl audience it would likely get on network TV.

I would guess a lot more people got Amazon Prime because of Thursday Night Football…

Trig, are you sensing a change in genres for Dan + Shay? Their marketing team seems to have given up. Their label doesn’t push their singles as much (They haven’t had a hit single since summer 2021). They didnt even attend the CMAs this year ..
And it took their label months to decide on “You” being their next single. It’s been pushed at radio since July but seems to be stalling in the top 40.
I think they are waiting to announce something big in 2023… And that is their next album will be contemporary Christian pop or something.

Dan + Shay are definitely cooling off, and I think it’s due in part to country music and the mainstream industry specifically trying to lean into more country acts to distinguish itself from the rest of popular music. The fact that they keep getting dunked on by the much less commercially successful Brothers Osborne at awards speaks volumes. But I don’t think they’re going anywhere. They may try to cross promote themselves to other genre like they did with Bieber, but I think in the pop world, they would get eaten alive. It’s the same reason Maren Morris can’t jump ship. They’re both being featured on the CMA Country Christmas, which is basically an “also ran” of the CMA Awards.

What shocks me is that both Dan + Shay and Old Dominion have struggled at radio lately.
The last 2 Dan Shay singles flopped and Old Dominion hasn’t had a #1 at radio in 3 years…

Bull crap. Country music fans are not idiots. At least most of anyway know exactly what Luke Combs meant when he said it was the only country awards show he has been to in 6 years.!
He is the stereotypical red neck racist.
Sickening.
November 22, 2022 @ 2:53 pm
Um, what?
So first, this is the Luke Combs quote:
“This is my 5th or 6th year being at this awards show, and country sounded more country than it has in a long time, and I think we all wanted that.”
In fact, I think I’ll put that quote in the article, because it’s a great summation of the evening.
But I’m not sure how Luke is a typical redneck racist. If he’s racist, why did he collaborate with Leon Bridges? If the CMAs are racist, why did they highlight The War and Treaty, Jimmie Allen, and Breland on the presentation? There is a pernicious idea that nostalgia equals racism. Black artists can play actual country music, and traditional country music too. In fact, there are many that have and do.

What are you talking about?

Lulu, I just don’t understand you.

Ratings going UP for any awards show is unheard of nowadays. Let’s hope the CMAs won’t reverse course next year.

I have yet to figure out, why Country music thinks it has to compete with Pop and Rock. I grew up on country music. Yes, traditional country and no, I am not 60+ in age. Today’s Country is not Country. Yes, there are some tremendously talented individuals, but they are not singing Country and don’t belong in the genre. I believe that is why the Opry’s 90s celebration is so huge right now. Please Country radio bring back Country Music.

I haven’t watched the CMA’s in years and this year was no exception. I did, however, watch a YouTube video of Patty Loveless showing us all that no current female star can hold a candle to her. Still, I have to wonder if she would have been allowed to perform without Stapleton. Maybe next year he’ll invite Lee Ann Womack.

AMA’s sure messed up with Taylor Swift, Female country Artist, she’s not country, the other nominees sure were!!!

56 years of the cma’s, and I’ve watched most.. This year’s was probably best ever, probably even better than the one that saw Taylor Swift sing to Tim.. Tribute to greatest female singer across all genres.. Loved Loretta enough to name my daughter Loretta Lynn.. Cary did a really good impression.. Tribute to Alan bc he’s an all time great. Peyton and Luke were great choice.. Best about this year: country music is returning to being “country music”. The writing, the singing, the music, the artists and the performances were best presentation in many years. KEEP IT COUNTRY and I’ll keep listening. Luke Combs agrees. 56 years of history and I could watch this one 56 times.. Great job CMA????????

Couldn’t agree more with Luke Combs. Hope the momentum continues.
November 23, 2022 @ 4:26 pm
I would sure love to hear a new album by Patty Loveless someday.

Haven’t watched in ages but I was pleasantly surprised how good it was. I agree with Luke Combs and how about Lainey Wilson? She’s a breath of fresh air and her duet with Hardy was by far the best of the night, in my opinion

I tell you what l think of the CMA awards l thought it was terrible. It seem more like a rock n roll concert. The ladies are lookin like hootier girls country music use to descent. I am not a fan bring back the old country music. Allan Jackson will be missed ……
