2023 Ameripolitan Weekender & Awards Features a Stacked Lineup
It’s been a couple of years since the Dale Watson-founded Ameripolitan Awards and the corresponding weekend of events have occurred due to COVID-19. But 2023 promises to be a rousing comeback with a stellar lineup of musicians slated to perform February 17th to 19th in Memphis, Tennessee.
Along with country legends like Kinky Friedman and James Intveld, most all of the 2023 nominees for Ameripolitan Awards are slated to perform too, including a murderer’s row of some of the best women in roots music at the moment, not limited to Brit Taylor, Kaitlin Butts, Rachel Brooke, Summer Dean, Emily Nenni, Hannah Juanita, Kristina Murray, Brennen Leigh, Melissa Carper, and more.
Not to be outdone on the male side are nominees like Vincent Neil Emerson, Willi Carlisle, Jeremy Pinnell ( who rips!), Garrett T. Capps, Dallas Burrow, and others. Groups include the Dallas Moore Band, Jenny Don’t And The Spurs, The Rhyolite Sound, The Shootouts, The Waymores, and more.
This really is a big lineup of some of the best and most important up-and-coming artists in Ameripolitan music all in one place. And of course, they will all be up for top awards at the Ameripolitan Awards to happen Sunday night, February 19th. To see a list of the nominees for the awards, CLICK HERE. Voting is still open to the public.
Unlike previous years where Ameripolitan utilized different venues throughout Memphis, in 2023, all of the showcases and events will be happening at The Guesthouse at Graceland, facilitating more folks being able to attend the showcases, and all in one place. Other events like a Thursday night kickoff party and a Monday afternoon comedown gathering will happen down the road at Hernando’s Hide-A-Way.
This is a rare opportunity to see all of this talent in one place, and to support the artists who support the roots of American music.
Dale Watson defines Ameripolitan as original music with a prominent roots influence. He founded the awards in 2013 after Blake Shelton referred to classic country music fans as “Old Farts and Jackasses.” The Ameripolitan Awards are a non-profit organization. Held for the first few years in Austin, Ameripolitan made the move to Memphis along with Dale in 2018.

Ameripolitan is always fantastic for great female singers. I have a couple of playlists I’ve put together (they’re not actually updated with the current nominees, I made this about a year ago):

Is Mojo hosting? I remember you wrote about that once.

I would be surprised if Mojo hosts. He hosted the first year, and it was pretty funny. The 2nd year he ran out of material, crossed the line, and folks were literally heading to the exits. Dale, Ray Benson, and others have hosted since. No word on a host this year.

Nice to see The Rhyolite Sound get some attention. One of the best bands nobody knows about.

Really? It’s pretty so-so, or worse than so-so, to me. I don’t get how he got nominated here. He’s not anywhere near the singing and songwriting or originality of the anyone else on the list. Literally nothing stands out about his one album and there’s only one or two articles about him out there, so it’s not like he’s making a big splash somewhere. I wonder how many people actually voted in the Western Swing category for the nominations and if he squeaked in through friends voting him in.

It’s the “who’s my buddy?” awards… Not real ones.

Jeremy Pinnell should be killer based on that massively overlooked Goobye L.A. record!
It rips SO hard.

“Ameropoiltan?” Sounds rather eclectic, but save Kinky and a couple of others,I draw a blank on most of the listed performers.

This roster is definitely weak. Doesn’t bode well for the future of this event.
