Alan Jackson Walked Out on Beyonce’s 2016 CMA Performance
Alan Jackson has been known throughout his career for putting his foot down for the integrity of country music, regardless of the ramifications. That’s what happened at the 1994 ACM Awards when Jackson instructed his drummer to play without sticks when the producers insisted his band mimic playing to a backing track. Then at the 1999 CMA Awards, Alan Jackson notoriously stopped down his rendition of “Pop A Top” to break into George Jones’ “Choices” after the producers told Jones he would only be allowed to play a shortened version of the song and Jones left in protest.
Well apparently Alan Jackson let his displeasure be known again at an awards show, though the cameras and much of the press didn’t catch it. At the 50th Annual CMA Awards on Wednesday, November 2nd—where Jackson performed with George Strait and participated in other festivities—Alan Jackson left his seat in the front row when pop star Beyonce came out on stage for her performance of “Daddy Lessons.”
Rumors that Jackson walked out on the performance have been swirling ever since the CMA’s, but it wasn’t confirmed by anyone on site until an unnamed Nashville manager who was sitting near Jackson during the awards spilled the beans to Billboard.
“I think it was a flat performance overall and a lot of industry people I have talked with were not impressed for a variety of reasons,” said the manager to Billboard. “The overall show was great, but in my opinion that seemed out of place and felt forced. It just didn’t fit the night to me, celebrating the 50 years, and the Dixie Chicks seemed like her backup band on it, without enough of a real shout-out to them. I was sitting behind Alan Jackson, and he actually stood up from the front row and walked out in middle of the performance, so I think that spoke volumes for the traditional, real country acts.”
So far Jackson hasn’t publicly addressed his decision to leave during Beyonce’s performance, or made any public comments about the performance itself, though recently he’s been pushing the hashtag “#KeepinItCountry” through his social media, and right before the awards he told Chris Willman in an interview with Yahoo:
“I think it’s important to recognize the 50 years, but I wouldn’t want to be singing a song on there and some young artist who just had a #1 record would be fussing: ‘They’ve got old Alan Jackson on there and I can’t even get to do my new song!’ … Yeah, they may play some real country music. But I understand the dang television station trying to get the ratings with whatever they think is gonna prop it up, with some big event with some other type of artist on there. Yeah, hopefully it’ll be a good country music show for a change.”
Much has been made of Beyonce’s appearance since the CMA Awards last week. In the aftermath, many entertainment outlets accused the CMA’s of “scrubbing” all record of Beyonce’s performance after some racially insensitive comments were left on social media, but it was later revealed the CMA’s removed the posts at the request of the Beyonce camp. Nonetheless, accusations of racism against artists and entities who were opposed to a pop star playing the awards have continued, including against Kenny Chesney who some discerned as making a pained face during the performance and was forced to address the matter, and Travis Tritt who tweeted out his displeasure with the Beyonce choice.

I am glad you said that, as a Christian, I just feel she is dressing way too sexy to be proclaiming her faith…not judging her soul or heart. A tree is known by the fruit that it bears, and that is not good fruit, to dress like the world dresses….we are to be in the world but not of the world…

Just to clarify , the Bible says for us to judge ourselves ; its better to fall on the rock, than have the rock fall on you; cause it will grind you to powder. People are always talking about judgment like they know what it means, it’s obvious they don’t ; simply making an observation of something , isn’t judging at all; this what means when the Bible says” a tree is known by the fruit it produces, bares. Did get it says they are KNOWN by it.

Justin I have been aware of the styles she has chosen since becoming a mother. For her childs sake I would think her stylist and she would choose modern yet a bit more modest clothing.
There are few to none that can attempt comparison to her voice. She doesn’t need the extreme stage clothes as many do.
This is my opinion, I am a Christian woman. if I were her friend I would offer my opinion. No judgements, most true girlfriends tell the truth as They see it.

Perhaps you would feel more comfortable with the Dove Awards & Christian Music. Country Music is not the poster boy for selective religious beliefs. In fact, if you’re sensibilities are offended by George’s drinking songs, Dolly’s tits, DAC’s cheating songs, Cash’s murder lyrics, Merle’s prison tunes & Waylon’s hellraising music…you can change the channel cos the music won’t change for you.

As a Christian, you shouldn’t be judging someone else especially on their choice of clothing. So because she is a Christian she should dress a certain way??? You can’t proclaim your faith and be sexy?? Being sexy is not a sin and judging someone for dressing a certain way is certainly not a Christian value.

As a music fan, I appreciate the fact that the CMA’s are embracing talented artists for collaborations. I am not a big country music fan, nor am I a big hip hop/ R&B/ Pop fan. The truth is, music can have different meanings to different people and inspiration can come from anywhere or anything. A future country star may one day say that the Dixie Chicks and Beyoncé not only exposed them, but inspired them to find their voice in music.
Congratulations to the CMA for appreciation of the past and foresight to inspire the voices of the future.

Old post but so disgusting and hateful I had to comment …. So sad n typical comment above from the so called Christian women who mentioned Christianity (of course not real bible teachings or Christ followings or love which = God and simply the same mainstream fake religion things, like focusing more on outside than in… Fake for show Christ followers who hardly if ever read bible (what bible warned most will be and simply those who want to appear godly only n never truly want or try to be) + plus basic political religion, where u pick n chose what verses n biblical topics n verses tp discuss (like republicans only mentioning the same basic political sins and only politically religious and this fallacy that country music is Christian music) …… What a joke (not saying I want it to be and I in fact love the good ol partying county persona n songs of the last century)….. “Mommas and prison and getting drunk,” so godly, Friends in low places like getting drunk is godly, rowdy drunk friends settling down n not wanting to get overly drunk is so godly, according to ur standards u place on Beyoncé and her wardrobe….. Not ….. So why just picking on her….None of the above should be judged and what about the long list of these new aged pop country singers that dress no less Beyoncé style as u described ….. It’s the new aged pop country that’s the prob not Beyoncé …. this new school pop country that’s just bs pop wanna be country with the fakest Nordstrom mixed with ambercrombie with a lil back street boys mixed with urban cowboy clothes with movie star perfect cowboy clothes n persona …. Wanna be country ….. N the sentimental lyrics that are so unrealistic and outta a Disney movie n no longer the old school red neck blue color authentic country …. But it’s still better than when a preppie who can hardly sing chooses country n has this new aged phony style too but tries so hard to be rebel n redneck…. Like an ambercrombie model doing a cowboy song …. can’t stand this new aged pop country ….. But that ain’t beyonces fault and has been happening for too long, with singers like Taylor swift that are pop to the max n endless one hit wonders that look n sing like a pop star with cow girl hat n an occasional forced twang, n even Carrie underwood, n even preppie FL GA line r all turning country into pop! He shoulda walked out way before Beyoncé, if he’s upset like I am with this new aged pop country …. Bc at least Beyoncé isn’t Taylor swift and all the other so called country singers who are flat out pop and taking over country music with their pop n claiming n preyed if to be country, she made no attempt ever to be a country singer …..And she is a Georgia corn fed girl …. so she may perform pop but love a lot of country songs…. Hell like all Hollywood show biz gatherings n awards it coulda been forced and unathetic and just set up by managers bc of how pop country is and or bc she may not be a country singer but loves music and is in the music industry and as a Georgia girl with a soul voice could sing a hella good country song n be less fake than these new aged fake pop country stars n sound better n more genuine…. Authetic or not…. And though she doesn’t sing songs true to her and her life story, like true artists and it isn’t authentic or often meaningful or deep songs and although she hardly if ever writes her own songs….. (Why I’m not a fan), she’s still got an amazing voice and actual talent n natural good voice n looks that didn’t need plastic surgery at late teens early 20s …. Her voice is amazing (why it’s sad she doesn’t write her own songs authetic to the soul, but Cher nor Madonna hardly if ever sang deep songs n they’re legends n American treasure, without any anger from ppl over those titles), But take early Taylor swift (back when she wasn’t only pop but at least still sounded a tiny bit country when she forced it, may have wrote her own songs, though she was too young to have those adult experiences factually so it wasn’t true to her life ad likely many were her mom and other by another adult working on getting her heard, I loved those early songs, even if I didn’t consider them country, they were great lyrics but her very average voice with lil to no talent that sounded like someone karaokeeing, she didn’t have great vocals or soul or anywhere close to Beyoncés voice n tone, writing her own music or not. But she’s certainly not like the many pure pop entertainers, like Britney Spears (who I like as a person), and many other entertainers, who have no voice or real talent, who were bred by parents hell bent on getting any offspring Famous at cost of soul, who sing superficial songs, don’t write their own music and have no voice (not to mention no striking beauty and needed 1mill put into her looks from start), no amazing vocals like Beyoncé ….n just had a computer do n fix it all and her generic dance moves aren’t even a tenth of her back up dancers…. dedicating their lives to dance….. Would he have walked out on Madonna, Cher, Brittany? Maybe, bc he may not want country continue going to pop…. but def maybe not ….. N pop or not, she’s got one hell of a voice. And he never had walked out like that before, and by now country had gone to shit and complete bs pop….. He shoulda walked out way before n oh many other performers there who weren’t country and ESP the many new aged pop country singers who claim they’re country, not just simply supporting other music genres and singing a song outside of genre….. But she did sing gospel growing up in Georgia at church ….. Black or not she’s a southern girl! So Let’s not pretend country was ever Christian or better than the rest of genres morally, there’s dedicated Christian country sensations who live square lives as well as wild country sensations like cash who would party n booze n not judge n sing gospel n rowdy country …. just as non country singers who sing, are sometimes dedicated square Christians and or have made a gospel or country song. Just so sad….. N again not Beyoncés fault country has long ago went to shit and pop and at least she’s not one of many non soul voices one of the many country style ppl n singers envading, pretending, disguising, faking and lying n saying and thinking they’re country and not blatant pop. But then again country music is still show business with long sensationalized bs behind scenes and its just as Hollywood and fame seeking (ESP today and even in the past) with fake n rich singers, like all music genres (though there’s always some authentic singers from all genres mixed with the masses of phonies) ….. It’s the music industry and country is the style right now…. aka the new pop …. Fake wanna be country …. Everything now a days is about being fake, fake Christian, fake country, fake godly, fake good, fake ! But if ya didn’t want it to become this way n all famous Hollywood …then Alan n others shouldn’t have seeked fame and aimed to be on radio n tv like the rest. N woulda said no in the rare event they were sought up n begged to go main stream lol…. N hell even now u can stop going to these things and stop with phony Hollywood ! PS- I love how the wanna be Christian lady who commented on how ungodly n inappropriate Beyoncé looked, not only judged by that but didn’t mention the many others there that were dressed the same way, but especially how she tried to reply n defend her blatant judging by saying she was not judging but making an observation and opinion and God asks for us to do that and it’s not judging (I can’t scroll up to word for word it) ….. Lmao, that was without a skit judging u literally said that her outside appearance did not agree with what is godly …. Even if u think u were being righteous and think ur judging of superficial outside things was only bc of how provocative it was and how God don’t like that as if u know that ….. We were originally meant to be naked ! U judged admit it n at least admit it n justify it by saying u think it’s a sin lol. God asks that we not judge but to only judge in a discretion way and study someone’s character and actions and judge by fruit they produce (not clothes they wear, but actions and words they speak), in order to make sure we keep good company and not be mixed with godlessness or get hurt by thieves, ppl who want to hurt us physically or mentally or use us n spread gossip n judge n bare false witness ….. Their fruit is either light or darkness…. No human or their produce is always perfect though

Alan Jackson is a man who stands up for authentic real country music. I don’t believe it’s rude to make a stand for something you believe in and against something that almost everyone else in the industry doesn’t have the courage or power to do. If more people did what Alan did, country music wouldn’t be so trendy today. People may like all kinds of music and that’s fine but when you are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the country music awards it might be a little “unprofessional” and “rude” to play pop songs.

Do you think an R&B audience would appreciate having a Willie Nelson song inserted into any of their awards shows? Pretty sure there would be people walking out. Why does it have to be a racist move? Alan Jackson is a traditional country artist and their were many other country singers to chose from to honor country artists. It was just a bad choice to have on the 50th ACM awards.

I have never been particularly fond of Beyoncé’s music, Country or otherwise. I believe she’s talented but I would have never put her in the Country Music genre. I started listening to country music when I was 15 yrs old. I loved the earlier artists, Conway, Loretta, Dolly, Alan, Randy, George S., Vince, Charlie P, Alabama, G. Jones, Buck, Tammy, etc. One day, 30+ yrs later, I turned my radio on to my trusted Radio on and for some reason, I realized I couldn’t listen to CM anymore. I hear an occasional song every now and again that grabs my attention but I stopped cold-turkey. And I don’t understand why. I don’t know any of the newer artists but I happened to catch a group called Chapel Hart, I believe, on a clip from America’s Got Talent. I thought they fit more into the CM genre than Beyoncé. As for the way she dresses, as well as the others, to each their own. If I don”t like something, I remove myself from it and move on. If Alan had a problem, he did what worked for him.

It’s about time someone in country music remembered and had balls to stand up for real country music and not that crap they call country music today. I have stopped listening to country because I hate pop and it has no real feelings or heart felt knowledge of experience from the artist. Someone writes a song they put a pop beat to it then sell it to the artist who only wants the return from the millions they make then over charge for tickets and people call it country LIARS.

He should have walked out during Thomas Rhett or FGL or Kelsea Ballerini. Why make such a show of celebrating history, only to cram it in the first 8 minutes and then showcase every subpar artist there is with a full performance? They are doing far more to ruin music. Beyonce and the Chicks were a bad decision, but so was giving performance slots to these artists when there was so much talent just sitting in the audience.
Mike W.
November 9, 2016 @ 11:11 am
100% agree. Beyonce/Dixie Chicks was bad, but at least in a vacuum, regardless of those artists social/political stances, they have talent. I mean, Beyonce, while I am no fan of her music, can actually sing. Kelsea Ballerini can barely sound competent vocally. FGL has always been terrible and Thomas Rhett is walking proof that some people just shouldn’t repopulate the planet. The only good parts of the show were Stapleton/Yoakam, Church, and the opening segment. The rest was a disjointed mess, complete with Brad and Carrie’s terrible jokes.

I am a latecomer to the Alan Jackson fan club. I grew up on Hee-Haw, and Porter Wagoner, and Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. I never cared for Alan or even George Strait.
But they both won me over after a while.
I like to fancy Alan Jackson as “the everyman.”
He’s so honest, so average and so down to Earth that he’s “the voice of the common people” more than any other singer.
And even though sometimes he’s been a bit too fluffy, a bit too poppy, he’s always balanced that out.
And hey, hey’s done more fighting for Country Music than a lot of folks.

Still, it would’ve been amazing to see Alan Jackson walking out in the middle of garbage such as Jason Aldean’s 2014 Burnin it Down performance. Cora

No way! You should feel offended by being compared to the country music destroyer Alan Jackson. It was Alan Jackson who killed country music by dumbing it down (i.e., that stupid 9/11-exploiting song where he couldn’t tell the difference between Iraq and Iran) and living up to stereotypes (i.e., “It’s Alright to Be a Redneck”, “Where I Come From”, “Country Boy”). Also, not to mention that “Chattahoochee” is littered with bro-country buzzwords such as moonlight, girls, and trucks. So Alan Jackson basically invented bro-country. Additionally, considering Alan Jackson killed country, “Murder on Music Row” is basically the country version of Key and Peele’s video Rap Album Confessions. And not to mention he covered Wiz Khalifa’s “We Dem Boyz” and Akon’s “Don’t Matter” at his concerts. This guy is a danger to real country music, and arguably the biggest disgrace to country music in its entire history. Trust me, one day it will be as clear as day that Alan Jackson is truly the Nickelback of country music; it will be his fate to go down as the next Nickelback, a laughing stock. He’s nothing but a corporate puppet/sellout, and trust me, he will not be remembered. Alan Jackson is desecrating country music and its rich history. His “music” (if you choose to call it that) is far from country, let alone pop country. It’s a weird mix of hip-hop and hair metal. If Alan Jackson is country, then Samsung is a restaurant. Enough said.

Gypsy truck, Austell Ga., you are wrong! Alan Jackson is what destroyed country music. He’s as country as Soulja Boy. For starters, Alan Jackson killed country music by dumbing it down (i.e., that stupid 9/11-exploiting song where he couldn’t tell the difference between Iraq and Iran) and living up to stereotypes (i.e., “It’s Alright to Be a Redneck”, “Where I Come From”, “Country Boy”). Well, for starters, Alan Jackson is why so many people hate country music. Listen to “Chattahoochee”, “Country Boy”, “It’s Alright to be a Redneck”, and “Where I Come From”. Alan Jackson killed country by living up to and reinforcing negative country stereotypes in his music. Also, he made country music look ignorant, especially in his stupid 9/11-exploiting song where he couldn’t tell the difference between Iraq and Iran. And not to mention he covered Wiz Khalifa’s “We Dem Boyz” and Akon’s “Don’t Matter” at his concerts. I’ll say it again, Alan Jackson is the Nickelback of country music.

I believe Alan Jackson saw this performance for what it was: a controversial ratings grab. What better way to make headlines than to put Natalie the Mouth Maines on stage with a half-naked diva pop queen such as Beyoncé. It’s a fact that the Dixie Chicks like to stir the pot and everyone involved knew they would be doing just that. Country Music is serious business for Alan Jackson and it’s his life, love and passion. He has every right to remove himself from something that assaults his heart and sensibilities on such a deep level. #I’mwithhim

Why would anyone not vote for Trump! But that’s purely a personal decision and nobody’s business. On another note, I would love to know the executive’s name who asked Beyoncé and Dixie Chicks to perform in the first place. Beyoncé could have been a mentor for young girls, but she decided to do trash music and dance like trash. I lost it for the Dixie Chicks years ago when they trashed President Bush like they did. Alan Jackson is Hall of Fame material for sure, and they should really scold harshly that executive. The crowd wanted COUNTRY music, not trash!

Disrespect for people is never something that should be celebrated. If Alan is angry at the CMA’s for inviting her, ok, that’s his right., and he has the right to express that publicly & to the CMA people. But they did invite her & the Dixie Chicks. Standing up during a performance is flat-out disrespectful to the performers.

jody whelan
November 9, 2016 @ 4:07 pm
If he felt that strongly about it, he should not have attended. That would have been an appropriate way to “take a stand” about the booking. Instead, he disrespected the performer.

Jody whelan
November 9, 2016 @ 7:39 pm
That’s a good point, I’d forgotten about that. That makes it less of a “FU” to a specific performer, although I still don’t feel great about it. I mean, there’s been room for Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, Sam Hunt etc etc over the years…
I guess I just hate the “you’re not welcome here” sentiment that was a lot of people’s response, even if it wasn’t coming from a racist place
seak05
November 9, 2016 @ 6:06 pm
Alan disrespected the performer. He could have pulled the plug on his performance. He could’ve made a statement as Tritt did. But instead of making a statement against the people who actually made the decisions, he chose to make it against a fellow performer.
Two wrongs don’t make a right. The way to stand up for what you believe in isn’t to disrespect somebody else.
Farmer Brian
November 9, 2016 @ 7:14 pm
I don’t know that I would say it was disrespectful. We don’t know if he just left to go to the men’s room and came back or if he left all together. I reread Trigger’S article and it doesn’t say one way or another. It just states that a guy who sat behind AJ saw him get up during the performance. I doubt Alan was trying to be disrespectful, necessarily. I don’t think it’s in his nature. Even when does rebellious things, he does it in a gentlemanly way. For example, when he rebelled against the CMAs with the “Choices” incident, it was purely of respect and loyalty to one of his musical heroes who he felt had been wronged.
My guess is Alan simply had little interest in the performance, and quietly took the opportunity to go visit the men’s room.

Really Allen? If you have to have every performance fit in your little “If your not like me….your not country” box… you need to quit judging and start expanding your boundaries. Although I do like traditional country…I know that if you can’t think outside the box and welcome and embrace new ideas and forms of creativity and the talent of others…., you are shut down to being stuck and stagnant in your own ego and era. An artist who is confident, satisfied, and proud of their individual contribution to sharing their artistic talent, to their fans, should want nothing more than for future artists to enjoy the same. Ask Elvis and the Beatles….here’s to change and exciting new horizons!

To me, we don’t have enough people like Alan! Someone needed to take a stand against those who are not country for taking part in what was supposed to be an anniversary for country music and it has absolutely nothing to do with what color a person is. Non country acts like Beyonce already have the VMA awards, the BET awards, the Soul Train gathering as well as the majority of the American Music Awards and the Grammys too. Why did they have to invade a show that is meant for another musical format when forming another show could have been done instead if what they already have is not enough? And no, this isn’t the first time that non country acts have taken part in this show, but right that is just it. When did one show without them become too much to ask for? And if being among non country acts is where the Dixie Chicks would rather be, its no skin off my back either when they made it as clear as crystal glass years ago that they have no respect for country music by doing nothing but trash one country act after another after another after another: Toby Keith, Reba McEntire, Trace Adkins, Joe Nichols, and Jason Aldean. In my opinion, if they can’t show any respect, they shouldn’t expect any in return and if they didn’t want anyone else to exercise the freedom to dig out our two pennies all them years ago, they should have kept their own money in their pockets first. I hope that Alan left when Carrie Underwood, Kasey Musgraves, Kelsi Ballerini, and Maren Morris were on the stage too. They are who helped the Chicks turn the show into the roller coaster that it was. Eric Church, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Alan/George, and Dwight/Chris were the high points.
God bless them and everyone else who stands for real country music always!!!

I LOVE Alan Jackson. He is REVERED in my heart, almost to the point of he can do no wrong in my eyes. Not only for his music, his heart, his character, & his demeanor but his quiet, calm protesting of fake “Country” & defense of REAL Country. His loyalty & admiration for my all time hero, George Jones, never hurt either 😉 This is a man who I broke out of the hospital with double pneumonia at 14 because of just so wouldn’t miss his concert. That’s what makes what I’m about to say that much more disparaging.
WHY AJ?! Why them, why now? Okay, if The Dixie Chicks hadn’t been there and/or if this was a one off performance for Country Music or if you’d walked off for everyone who didn’t belong on a Country stage, I’d get it. I’d encourage it. I’d WANT you to do it (like I’ve wanted someone to do for so long). Why not any of the other pop singer performances over the years? Why not Florida Georgia Line or Luke Bryan ANYTIME, EVER? Why not when Miranda smashed the guitar? Why not any and EVERY time Taylor Swift performed or won? Why are 2 people I have great respect for (AJ & Travis), who’ve only criticized what’s been going on sporadically at best, and who haven’t criticized anything else from that show, protesting the performance that brought the Dixie Chicks (who, ironically, I’ve always maintained were the best thing to happen to Country Music since Alan Jackson) back to a Country stage for the first time in over 13 years? It just sucks that THIS is what they’re choosing to speak up about

Yeppers. Big man of Campus, huh Alan. Hes the one that has the
most integrity??
As he walks out on the Dixie Chicks, one of the great groups in country music
history, because they did a song with Beyonce.
You know what a bigger stand would’ve been Mr Alan Jackson, when those jackasses
at country radio banned the Dixie Chicks, if you had of given a speech, saying “Im pulling my
songs from country radio until they start playing the Dixie Chicks again”
That would’ve been a great stand to take and that would’ve taken real courage.
But you kinda lack that.
But hey you never criticize your President huh?, well unless hes black.
But hey there’s a white president now, so I guess we all have to go back to not
criticizing the President.
Well not until 2020 when Michelle Obama becomes President, then you can
criticize again.
Alan Jackson will still probably be moaning that real country music is not being played, real
being his stuff.
Jack Williams

Some interesting points there with respect to the Dixie Chicks, especially the backlash in 2003. My guess is that he either agreed with it (e.g., like Travis Tritt and Ricky Skaggs) or wasn’t about to jeapordize his career. Merle Haggard stood up against the backlash in no uncertain terms, as I recall.

The Dixie Chicks have some false notion that they are the Milennial version of Bob Dylan since they slammed President George Bush-which BTW destroyed their careers for 10 years. Now that they have found a generation who embraces their ult-left nonsense they again think they might become relevant. Is that all anyone can think of is black and white? Reverse racism is rampant. I support Alan Jackson 100%.I don’t think Beyonce should have been performing at a country music award show. This show is dedicated to thw men and women of country music. It should have stayed that way especially since it was 50 years of these country greats.I hated what I heard on stage which is why my remote flipped it to something else until they were all off the stage.Alan you and George Stait are the true country performers. The song you and him sang years ago together, Murder on Music Row summed it all up that night once again.Love you guys!

So much wrong in this comment. Do you not know that Alan Jackson is the man who killed country music? He killed country music by dumbing it down (i.e., that stupid 9/11-exploiting song where he couldn’t tell the difference between Iraq and Iran) and living up to stereotypes (i.e., “It’s Alright to Be a Redneck”, “Where I Come From”, “Country Boy”). Also, not to mention that “Chattahoochee” is littered with bro-country buzzwords, so Alan Jackson pretty much invented bro-country. Alan Jackson is truly the Nickelback of country music; it will be his fate to go down as the next Nickelback. He’s nothing but a corporate puppet/sellout, and trust me, he will not be remembered.

Straight up class. He doesn’t like the performance, so he simply just gets up. Doesn’t talk about why he got up, he just keeps to himself. Sometimes the simple moves or gestures can have powerful effects.

Alan Jackson wasn’t at the 2014 CMA Awards. In fact I don’t recall him being at many of the awards shows in the last half decade, and if he was, he likely wasn’t sitting in the front row. That’s the hubris of thinking he saved this protest for Beyonce. Alan Jackson, Travis Tritt, and many others have been doing and saying these things for years. Similar protests have been going on in country music since the 70’s. It is part of country music tradition.

November 10, 2016 @ 2:37 pm
Is Beyonce the CMAs? Does she represent the organization who invited her there? If he was protesting the assault on country music, why didnt he do it during his own performance, or in fact why did he not perform at all? He had several oppertunities to object but he chose to be disrespectful during her performance.
Trigger
November 10, 2016 @ 2:50 pm
Again, for the probably the 5th or 6th time: Beyonce wasn’t officially announced as a performer by the CMA’s until roughly two hours before the start of the presentation, and we have no idea if Alan Jackson was informed of this even at that point. He probably was busy eating dinner, rehearsing, who knows what. The first he may have seen or heard that she was performing is when she came out on stage. Of course he chose to be disrespectful of Beyonce’s performance. That was the point of walking out.

Where was Alan eating in a submarine? It’s bullshit that he didnt know she was going to perform. It was announced before the show and everybody was talking about it. At least you admit that he was being disrespectful to her. Way to stand up against the country industry by disrespecting a woman who has no part of it! Real hero move.

I was at the awards show and thought for the most part it was one of the best they have done. They could have left out The Dixie Chicks and the Beyonce butt rolling. I don’t feel either of them have a place on that stage with such greats as Loretta Lynn, Alan Jackson, Reba, George Strait to name a few. They had an audience of talented well-deserved artists to grace that stage on the 50th Anniversary and instead had that nonsense on and cut Dolly Parton’s speech short, for a lifetime of work does not seem very fair to me.

I’m confused. Isn’t there always a pop cross over at these things? JT and Stapleton… Why is Beyonce performing at the CMA’s being seen as SO terrible? I’d rather have it all country too but… this isn’t anything new. Why all the hoopla?
Trigger
November 10, 2016 @ 2:38 pm
Yes, there are always pop crossovers at these things … and they have always been railed against by traditional country fans and performers, including the Justin Timberlake performance. And to imply anything else is a lie, and is being used to accuse folks of racism and sexism, which is patently unfair to these people. In 1975 John Denver and Olivia Newton-John both won awards. Charlie Rich burned the envelope with John Denver’s name in it. The wins inspired traditional country artists to have a meeting in the living room of George Jones’ and Tammy Wynett’s house and for ACE, or the Academy of Country Entertainers. People saying there were no protests against Justin Timberlake, Meghan Trainor and others are misrepresenting the truth. Racism and sexism are serious charges, and should not be levied against anyone, especially when the basis is distorted facts.

‘Charlie Rich burned the envelope with John Denver’s name in it’
This event has always struck me as bizarre in so many ways. I was very little when this occurred so I have no memory of it but when one goes back and listens to the music of Charlie Rich and John Denver I have hard time saying one is massively more country than the other. I mean ‘Behind Closed Doors’ is a great song but it isn’t really that country sounding and the same goes for some of his other biggest hits.
Again I obviously wasn’t aware of the inner working of the industry then but he always struck me as a very strange man to be the messenger there. Plus it was just plain rude as Denver wasn’t even there in person to defend himself.

The point is that protests like this have been going on in country music for decades. Waylon Jennings didn’t even show up to his own Hall of Fame induction under protest. The idea that what Alan Jackson did was somehow unprecedented is just not understanding the history of country music. It’s not even unprecedented for Alan Jackson. That is why I started off this article with a run down of his protests, specifically at awards shows over the years.

Alan Jackson used the Beyonce performance as a good opportunity to go take a piss. He didn’t come at her with a knife and a vial of acid. Good gosh.

I’ve been commenting here long before Beyonce was a twinkle in the CMAs eye. Nice try though. I didn’t say Alan attacked Beyonce, the racist country fans did to a point where the CMAs tried to bleach her out of their mentions. Alan disrespected Beyonce. He didn’t do anything to change the status quo of pop country. Pop country rules the charts, it rules the airwaves pop country acts sell tickets. That is what makes country fans attacks on Beyonce so glaringly obvious. I had to stop reading Travis’s twitter when racist idiots were actually calling for segregation.
Alan’s walk out did not send a message to the CMAs that pop acts aren’t welcome. A good number of country performers are pop. The only lesson learned is don’t invite another black popstar.

That was a waste of CMA airtime that real artist such as Alan Jackson, George Straight, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood just to name a few could have entertained viewer’s. I have to say,it was one of the worst performances I have ever listened to and watched. After the first 3 minutes of them singing the same thing, I walked into the other room. 15 minutes of daddy says shoot was torture to listen to. A big tall 200 pound black lady in a see thru dress was a down right shame. I hope Alan Jackson was walking out on her. I have just one thing to say. Whomever decided that, that was Worthy of all that air time, should be replaced asap.

I remember after it was announced last year that Alan Jackson and Cole Swindell would sing a duet together and the ACM awards, I joked on this site that I hoped Alan Jackson had one of his acts of rebellion planned and that he might fling Swindell off the stage and into the front row as soon as he started singing. Of course, there was no act of rebellion. He went along with it. I guess Alan’s one to pick his shots.

Not sure why Country singers and their fans are so sensitive and nervous. If the music is a good as they say it is, surely it can withstand a little bit of Beyonce?
Hey, wait a minute…. 2012…
“Though he is not nominated for a Grammy (and has never won a Grammy) Alan Jackson will appear on this year’s telecast, Feb. 27, to sing “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning).” Jackson debuted his song Nov. 7 on the CMA awards show.
Jackson debuted his song Nov. 7 on the CMA awards show. Walter Miller produces both awards shows.”

“Not sure why Country singers and their fans are so sensitive and nervous. If the music is a good as they say it is, surely it can withstand a little bit of Beyonce?”
No, the right thing to say in my opinion is, if country is as good as they say it is, surely it can go without Beyonce or any other non country act having to come and make an appearance. Therefore, to me, whoever had the idea of having her come was pretty much saying that they have no faith in country music having the ability to stand on its own two feet without the help of someone from another popular musical format.
How are we to know what country music can do on its own if people from other musical formats are always going to have a presence?
God bless you and country music always!!!

These people are professionals and stars. Alan Jackson has a lot more in common with Beyoncé than he does with you or me. Until a better, named source is provided–or A.J. has a chance to comment–I’m not going to believe that Alan walked out on Beyoncé to protest her appearance on the show.
Alan may sing about liking bologna sandwiches and plywood motorboats, but if he sits down with Beyoncé, they could probably share notes on their private planes and yachts.

I believe both Alan Jackson and Beyoncé are great artists. If he did not like the song, it is his opinion. I personally thought the performance was excellent. I am a long time fan of both Dixie Chicks and Beyoncé. Just like other artist in previous years, they bring an artist for a crossover performance, so I don’t understand the problem. Music should be of choice, not race or genre. I am African American, I listen to all music. When it comes to the outfit, I have seen many artists in both R&B and Country dresses provocative such as Carrie Underwood, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, and so on. Just like hip hop, r and b, and country, these music genres have featured Christian message in it words. So, I feel that everyone should stop the nonsense.

As for walking out on the CMA’s, 90% of today’s so called ‘Country Music’, in no way resembles country music from 50 years ago. Perhaps it should be retitled something else like New Age Country music.
It’s not just Beyonces performance, which was hands down the most entertaining of the evening, but also Carrie Underwood and dozens of other ‘Country Performers. What you think, if the song isn’t about a pickup truck, or I’ve got mud on my boots, it’s not a country song? It’s nearly 2017, things have changed a lot since your career started. If you can’t catch up maybe you should retire.

I’m an OLD Texan, and has loved shit-kicking music my whole life; I mean down home stuff – fiddle, etc… That aside, I really enjoyed the Beyonce/Dixie Chicks performance. Great music; SEXY performer. Too bad about the narrow-mindedness of people who cannot open their minds to a variation of what they consider to be “country music”, or even to spend six minutes listening to a performance that doesn’t meet their standards for “country music”. Hell, 90% of what is being passed off as “country music” today isn’t even close to what I consider “real” country music to be. Neverthless, I still enjoyed Beyonce / Dixie Chicks. Hats off to the CMA for providing entertainment that I enjoyed the same I did the Carrie Underwood / Steven Tyler performance a while back. (That wasn’t exactly “country music” either, but I really liked it.)

This is an old thread, but I would like to point out something to the liberal moral worldlings who judge Christians because Christians judge. You don’t believe the Bible, which is the Christian standard of truth. Actually it is God’s standard of truth. God’s Word says it is wicked and immoral to dress and act seductively, such as Beyonce does.
As for Christians judging, the Bible teaches us to judge sin and immorality. There is no 11th Commandment that says Thou shalt not judge. In the moral morass in the USA today, the liberals say it is wrong to judge anyone for doing anything. In their mixed up minds the only sin is to call sin sin. If you have an argument with this comment, take it up with Jesus, not me.

Nashville wants Country. Now that being said….there are alot of artist today you could say is Country-Rock or Country-Pop. BUT the difference is….they blend into the scene. Beyonce is basically her own brand. She drowns out every artist shes ever performed with. Ask Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.
