Album Review – Charlie Marie’s “Ramble On”
Be still your heart, bend your ears, open your mind, but no need to temper your expectations for this highly-anticipated debut album from one of today’s preeminent country singers, the one and only Charlie Marie. Let the waves of classic country goodness wash over you, and extol their virtues upon your very soul, and put you at ease about the future of country music.
With albums and artists like this emerging in country music at the moment, it poses an existential threat to an operation named “Saving Country Music.” The only thing keeping a portal like this from being rendered obsolete and a “mission accomplished” banner hung is Charlie Marie receiving the deserved attention her music begs for.
One of the reasons it was such a tragedy when we lost Patsy Cline in 1963 is we never got to experience what Cline could have continued to blossom into and contribute later in life. Though it would never be fair to either Patsy or Charlie Marie to compare the two directly beyond the similar virtues of their respective voices and the style of which they’ve chosen to express it, Charlie Marie’s new album Ramble On certainly helps to answer what Patsy Cline could have sounded like if her career and life had continued.
Where Charlie Marie’s brilliant, though frustratingly succinct self-titled EP showed a kinship with the Patsy Cline sound in both style, writing, and music, her debut album recorded in Nashville with many of the top-notch pickers in the town has a decidedly more classic honky tonk flavor to it as opposed to a Countrypolitan one, meaning there’s a bit more punch and power, it moves up in the country music timeline about ten years or so, while the personal nature of the songs still resonate just as resoundingly.
When you get an artist that’s this good, you almost want to steel yourself to be disappointed since it seems to happen in music so often. As promising as the early tracks released from the album were, you immediately fall under the spell of the opening song “Soul Train,” where Charlie Marie commands, “It’s all about the country, not the fame. Come take a ride on a soul train.” Yes ma’am. I believe we will.
Your country-loving heart can’t help but to hone in on the voice of Charlie Marie and how it takes you back to such a superior era in country music history. But it would mean little if the lyrics and emotions weren’t instilled with such soul. Much of Ramble On is spent putting the sentiments of a pining heart into words, as beaus come ramblin’ into the life of Charlie Marie, only to ramble on later.
But where her songwriting shines is in the little wrinkles she includes in otherwise classic country song themes. “El Paso” seems like a fetching, but rather pedestrian Marty Robbins-inspired heartbreak song … until it’s revealed it’s another man that Marie’s man leaves her for. “Lauren” seems like a strange name for a song about a mountain man who can’t come down to give his heart to another, until it’s revealed at the end (spoiler alert) that the “mountain” he can’t be pulled away from is indeed another lover.
It’s the writing that’s self-aware of the inherent cliches of classic country and how to spin out of them that conjoins with Charlie Marie’s voice and the superior instrumental efforts here to make a full-bodied and enjoyable listening experience. And even when the song idea is a bit more straightforward like on “Bad Seed” and “Tough Kitty,” it all includes a classic cool factor that keeps you engaged.
Ramble On is nothing less than an assured pronouncement that Charlie Marie from the unlikely port of Providence, Rhode Island should be considered one of our premier recording artists in independent country music at the moment, and at or near the top of the pecking order when it comes to inspiring and confident women. The only question as always is if people will listen. But Charlie Marie has given them little to no excuse not to with Ramble On.
9/10

After giving it a good listen this morning in my car on my commute to work, I definitely recommend listening to it at a fairly loud level on a good sound system in your car or on a good set of headphones or ear buds. Anything less doesn’t give the album the richness and clarity it needs or deserves. Much like her debut EP, this album still leaves you wanting more, but fortunately, you can just start it right back over again.
My only hope is that she’ll be on tour with a full band when I get to hear it live.
9.5 out of 10 for me.

I’m not quite as enamored with the album, or Charlie as you are; However, I do believe she’s an invaluable asset regarding the future of country music, and preserving its roots. With that said, I really enjoy her music thus far, and I just purchased the vinyl from her site. I am very much looking forward to spinning this album for many years to come, and I’m excited to hear what she’ll bring to country music in the future.

charlie maries’ vocal performances have to rate in the high 90’s on the uniqueness scale . once she’s a household name , no one will mistake her for any other contemporary vocalist . the trick is in making her a household name . and I think a huge part of that will be a song .
I’m not hearing that song in the posts above but selfishly I don’t care . I’m loving the rope she has given to the players and the producer to remind a listener of how you support a lyric with music and rhythm and not the other way around , as so much newer ‘country’ music seems to be doing -supporting a groove with wall to wall soulless syncopated lyrics and pop rock hip hoppy arrangements .
I haven’t done my homework on the writing on this record ( although I loved the EP ) and have yet to hear it in its entirety but my personal opinion is that it could use a bit of polish ….perhaps a bit of nuance and ‘fat-trimming’ lyrically ? Saying that , I could listen to charlie marie’s voice in this setting all day long and be very happy doing so . I love this artist .

I’ve been listening to this album all morning. There is not a bad song on it. Charlie has released a real gem here. I’m loving it and hoping she finds huge success with this album. She deserves it, not only because she is a great country artist, but she is also a sweetheart who is willing to reach out and interact with her fans.
For everyone who has been saying there are no women in country music you can trust to release real country music consistently. Afterr two solid releases, you may have just found your girl. Get her album and tell your friends. Show that real country music from women will not only be appreciated, but supported.

One or two good tracks, and a nice album to have on in the background, but very little that stands out and makes you want to go back and hit replay.
I can’t figure out why. Not sure if its the audio mix which buries the instruments behind her voice and creating an awkward sound stage, or the fact the songs blend together too well creating a lack of differentiation.

I enjoyed her EP but this album honestly puts her into the realm of top independent Country artists for me the way that Rollin’ On did for Jesse Daniel did last year. Her voice is timeless and the production is fantastic. Excited to watch as she builds out her discography and starts to tour again

I haven’t had this many cold chills from listening to an album since the first time i heard the Gabe Lee – Farmland album. Killed it.

Her voice is incredible. I get the feeling you could hand her a script for a life insurance commercial and she’d make it sound interesting and great.
The one knock on this album for me is no hit song among them. The big hooks are missing. But that is a nitpick, and even having said that, the album is an easy repeat listen.
Definitely want to hear more, and soon.

I think the hit song could be “Soul Train.” Understanding what you’re saying though. Probably no “Turtles All The Way Down,” “Loud & Heavy,” or “Feathered Indians” that may bust out into the wide consciousness. But I think every song on this album is solid.

Hi Trigger, hope all is well with you. Just to let you know that Charlie Marie is busy recording another full album, and we will get it out to you as soon as it is completed. I’ve listened to the songs (all self penned) and it is quite a jump up and different from her Ramble On album. Hope you have a nice holiday season.

This album is a solid buy for me. A couple of cuts in I thought maybe she was trying to showboat vocally a bit much, but a couple more and I bought into it. Third time through and I’m pretty sure this is one I won’t weary of easily.
The highlight for me may be Cowboys and Indians – really enjoyed the interplay between her voice, the various guitars, and the ominous piano near the end.
A couple of comments were made about the production. It was good with earphones, but surprisingly good straight from the phone speaker. Maybe it was mixed to sound good in mono.

LoL. I’m from Rhode Island. I know we’re not Texas, and we bow down before you in this arena. But, we do produce the occasional country musician, about once a generation. Look up Eddie Zack, David Olney, and (I suppose it’s worth a mention) Billy Gilman. We also have a honky tonk – the Mishnock Barn in West Greenwich – and just over the border in Norton, Mass you can check out the New England Rodeo Ranch during the summer months.

Why was it important to make this song about a gay dude? It adds nothing to the song other than an unnecessary trick. Should make the Isbell fans swoon, though.

I’m a conservative who voted for Trump. I’m loving the album. Also, don’t think the song is about a gay guy, it’s about her and a relationship with a guy who left her. Thought the line where he left her for a guy was funny myself.

I’m a conservative who did NOT vote for Trump and I think the line is funny too. It’s quite a belly punch. And maybe it actually happened to her. Maybe that’s why she wrote it.

Because it wins you WokePoints, which are a currency appreciating even more quickly than BitCoin. Cool it with the “Trumper” anti-gay bullshit. Trump was the most gay friendly president in history. Several times, he wrapped himself in gay pride flags on stage and supported numerous prominent homosexuals. No one can credibly claim that he was homophobic (a ridiculous term) or anti-gay in any way. Its one of the few things that made me consider not voting for him.

May 7, 2021 @ 9:58 pm
Do we really need to get political in this discussion? Charlie Marie simply used this as a plot twist in a song. I don’t think there’s anything “woke” about it. If anything she runs a risk of angering the woke crowd by acting like it’s unusual for a man to leave a woman for a man, or by acting like gender is even real and not just a social construct.
This is a non-issue.
Jack W
May 8, 2021 @ 8:15 am
Not to mention the reference to one of Hank Jr.’s most popular songs less than minute into the album. Or these lyrics from El Paso:
You love who you love
Baby, that’s not a crime
But a cheater is a cheater
Your dirty laundry is on the line
But reactionaries are easily triggered. And for some, their culture war issues always come first. Honcho couldn’t use his usual complaint about women in country music selling out and going pop, as this music is unquestionably traditional country. Not Americana, but actual country music. But that’s not enough. For people like him, It needs to be country AND on their terms.

Exactly. I honestly don’t get it. Every post mentioning someone like Maren Morris will get 200 replies of people bitching about her pop music, her boobs, lips, clothes, politics, or Instagram pics. Here you have a woman who should check all the boxes. Great country music album. Attractive, but not flaunting her looks over talent or posting over sexual pics that seems to bother everyone. As far as I have seen, she has not posted any overtly political or woke posts on social media. She has kept her politics, whatever they may be, to herself. This is the artist and album everyone says they wanted in a female country artist. Just enjoy the damn album.

I love this album! When I first heard Soul Train, to be honest, I thought I was going to be disappointed, and I think that’s still my least favorite track. But by the second listen it started to grow on me, and the rest only took one listen. I think Lauren might be my favorite, just because I didn’t see the twist coming at all.

Hey RD what about all the ANTI TRANSGENDER BILLS HE PASSED. LIKE keeping trans people out of the military. He was for doctors being able to deny treatment to gay people based on their beliefs. Just in case you do not know, some trans people are gay. he banned trans gender people from serving in the military. he is was one of the most anti-LGBTQ presidents ever. Stop using your Trump wokism. Biden is the most friendly LGBTQ president. Stop drinking all that clorox ttump told you to drink

Love the album. If the EP was on vinyl I would have worn it out I’ve played it so many times. Charlie’s delivery is just so smooth and easy to get lost in and I bet she will knock a live tour out of the park. Tequila & Lime is probably my favorite song from the latest list but it’s going to be hard to top Rodeo, Rhinestones, Countryside, and Shot in the Dark.

I really liked this album. There’s a certain blues feel to it that I love, with songs like Soul Train and 40 Miles to Memphis (My favorite song on the album). Also, I found El Paso unexpectedly funny. It’s a twist like that I haven’t really heard in a Country song since Eric Church’s “Two Pink Lines”.

This sounds like the album that Kacey Musgraves has always had in her but has never made out of spite, the album that Ashley Monroe definitely has in her and should make next so she doesn’t vanish entirely, and the country version of an album that Lana Del Rey keeps making with undeserved attention.

I’d like to like these songs more than I do. The best thing about them is the sharp guitar and steel, especially on the first track. The worst thing is the grooves are mechanical. Let go of the click. I’m of the opinion that country music should be off the grid, literally. Cut tracks live in the studio like God intended, and give the machines to the southern pop machine where they belong.
Charlie’s voice is nice. The really distinctive female voices to me are Leah Blevins, Dori Freeman, Michaela Anne, Sierra Ferrell, and Melissa Carper. Old timey voices that have some calico in them.

If Dick Rowe can pass on the Beatles, then I guess I can pass on this–for now.
The songwriting is really good overall. I’m sure it’ll sound good live.

I like it. I favor female singers in every other genre (on those rare occasions) but, we’re long overdue for a truly breakout female modern “alt” (ie actual) country artist on the level of the top fellas. I agree, I’m not quite hearing the song that is going to resonate with the masses of finicky alt country fans quite yet but, she’s certainly capable and I hope she does it. It is a refreshing sound.
I really like Sierra’s thing too. As mentioned above, Ashley Monroe blows my mind every time I stumble upon her again but, she hasn’t managed to stay in my top dog list quite yet. She’s so good though and I feel like the cards largely just haven’t fallen in her favor by no fault of hers. Her grace has potentially even held her back.
Then there’s Amanda Shires and the girl from locust honey/Miller (whose name is unfortunately currently escaping me). Those two are just incredible musicians across the board second chair to no man. Something about a badass female who can sing a harmony and saw a fiddle solo making someone else look really good, then step up front and run the show seamlessly that I respect deeply on a musical level. Charlie Daniels. I just named the entire list of men I can currently think of who could have played that role.
The drama and ego with the ladies seems to be healthier too. I’d like to see a solid year (or 10) where the girls TAKE their turn at the top of this thing! Maybe that’s just what we need in this moment.

awesome comment. i live in england & ordered charlie’s album direct from her website last year. i received a signed copy together with a personal note & some stickers. it made my day & reminded me of when i used to order records from punk bands in the USA as a kid & they would take the trouble to write a personal letter & enclose stickers etc. the world is improved by such experiences.
there’s a very promising looking country festival here in the UK this summer with some serious names such as Marty Stuart, Sarah Shook, Gretchen Peters. i have tickets. would be great to see Charlie on a future bill. best wishes ????
