Black Oak Arkansas Founding Guitarist Rickie Lee Reynolds Has Died

Rickie Lee Reynolds—founding member and longtime guitarist for the wild Southern rock/country rock band Black Oak Arkansas—passed away on Sunday, September 5th at the age of 72. He had been hospitalized due to COVID-19, and though his condition had said to be improving from the infection, he suffered kidney failure and eventually multiple episodes of cardiac arrest.
One of the pillars of a band that helped define the cutting edge and craziness of the country rock scene starting in the mid 60’s, Rickie Lee Reynolds continued to play and perform in the band all the way up to his death. Sometimes nicknamed “Risky” or “Ricochet” Reynolds, he started the band in 1963 with fellow high school friends Ronny Smith, Stanley Knight, Pat Daugherty, and Wayne Evans, all of whom lived around the town of Black Oak, Arkansas.
Originally called The Nobody Else, the band’s first PA system was stolen from Monette High School. Members of the band were charged with grand larceny, which meant they had to retreat to the hills of Arkansas to evade arrest and imprisonment (the sentence was later commuted). They eventually signed to Stax records for a stint, but ended up in Los Angeles in 1970, officially changed their named to Black Oak Arkansas, installed the wild James “Jim Dandy” Mangrum as the frontman, and released their now legendary self-titled album in 1971.
Black Oak Arkansas eventually earned three Certified Gold records and toured extensively, with the antics of the band, especially of frontman “Jim Dandy” Mangrum, going on to influence many bands and frontmen in the years to come. The band was also one of numerous outfits admonished by Christian organizations for potentially embedding Satanic lyrics into certain songs.
Rickie Lee Reynolds was part of the great purge from the band in 1977 when “Jim Dandy” Mangrum decided to release all the other members and hire new players, shorten the name to Black Oak, and tried to answer critics by trying to appear less Southern, and more serious. It didn’t really work, and the band released a couple of poor-selling records before Reynolds rejoined the band in 1984, now called Jim Dandy’s Black Oak Arkansas, and began recording for Atlantic Records.
Eventually the Black Oak Arkansas name was adopted in full again, and with Rickie Lee Reynolds and Jim Dandy making up the nucleus of the band. They continued to tour and release albums regularly, including their most recent album, Underdog Heroes, released in 2019. Jim Dandy is now the only Black Oak Arkansas member from the original early 70’s lineup.
The daughter of Rickie Lee Reynolds announced the guitarist’s death on Sunday.
“Unfortunately, this morning he suffered another cardiac arrest, which they were unable to resuscitate him from,” said daughter Amber Lee. “We are all heartbroken by this massive loss, and the whole world feels colder and more empty without his presence among us. Please take a moment of silence today to remember all of the love he gave to the world, and take some time to give back some of those wonderful feelings that he gave us all in our times of need.”

Sincere apologies. Not sure how I got that wrong in the title. Just a brain fart. It’s been corrected.

Used to hang out with him at the Poplar Lounge in Memphis, good guy and great storyteller.
Not many people realize the influence these guys had, the names of bands that opened for them includes Springsteen, The Eagles, Aerosmith, Todd Rungren, Ted Nugent just to name a few. Some remember the story of Chuck Berry kicking Keith Richards off the stage at the Hollywood Palladium, BOA were the headliners that night, look it up.
RIP Ricochet.

I think one or members ended up becoming born again themselves somewhere along the line, if I’m not mistaken.

Yes, Harvey Jett, who departed in 1974, became a born again Christian.

Whatever listeners thought of BLACK OAK ARKANSAS — whether good or bad — they were *distinctive*. You couldn’t mistake Jim Dandy & Co. for Lynyrd Skynyrd or Marshall Tucker, et al. And without Ricky Reynolds there would’ve been no BOA to *ever* listen to. RIP. Nothing like a good ole Southern Rock song to play and think of Ricky and BOA. FEVER IN MY MIND is a good ‘un!

I only saw them live 1 time, but Man oh Man, oh what a show.
I wore holes in All of Black oak Arkansas records .
In later years, through a series of events Ricky helped us build our collection of Black oak back to where it should be and all on CD rest in peace ricochet

My Dad is still alive .. Pat “Dirty” Daugherty.. Tommy is still alive too… Aldridge.. he was with Ozzy when Randy Rhoades died in the plane crash.. Tommy ran to the crash to try to save Randy but nothing he could do.. Tommy was with Whitesnake off and on since 80s til few years ago..Coveredale just couldn’t do it anymore.. But Tommy and Dad(Pat) were original Members., Dad even came out of retirement to record the album Jim wanted make few years back… Jim begged him so he did it…but he said No Live Shows … Just the Record… So they made it…
And to the guy that Mentioned David Lee Roth.. it’s true that Roth owes a lil to Jim cause Roth did Study Jim’s Stage Presence and Performance and even one night in L.A. at Whiskey A Go-Go DLR approached Him and asked him if he would mind it if Dave Filmed him during the show … Jim told him he didn’t care , so he did… Not too long after that time in time,.. Van Halen came up and they just catapulted into Stardom almost instantly… When people ask Jim if he felt any sort of way about Roth stealing his moves on stage… Jim put it like this… Hey, DLR didn’t steal my moves … What he did was take part of my moves and parts from other performers and combine them with his own unique style and made something that is all HIS… Jim said, I DID THE SAME THING, I WATCHED OTHERS PERFORM ON TV OR WHEREVER… TOOK IDEAS FROM THEIR MOVES, ADDED MY UNIQE STYLE TO THEM AND MADE SOMETHING ALL MINE, HE SAID AND THEY DID THE SAME BEFORE THEM, WE ALL DO IT… SO NO… NO HARD FEELINGS TOWARDS DAVE AT ALL .. I’VE SEE HIM PERFORM AND I LIKE THE GUY AND HIS PERFORMANCE… THE ONE THING ABOUT ALL OF THESE GUYS IS THAT AFTER ALL THEY’VE BEEN THROUGH AND ALL THAT WAS TAKEN AND THAT HAS BEEN CHEATED FROM THEM, THEY NOT ONCE SET OUT ON ANY REVENGE MISSIONS, NEVER CALLED ANYONE OUT OR SPOKE HARSHLY ABOUT ANYTHING OR ANYONE…. AND IF THEY WOULD HAVE, THEY WOULD HAVE HAD EVERY SINGLE RIGHT TO DO SO.. BUT, THEY STAYED ON THE HIGHER GROUND AND NOT ONCE TOOK ANY GIVEN CHANCE OR MOMENT TO DO SO,. THEY ACCEPTED EVERY BAD HAND THEY HAVE BEEN DEALT AND ABSORBED EVERY BAD BLOW GIVEN TO THEM… THATS SOMETHING EVEN I CAN’T ALWAYS DO.. OR MOSTLY DO,. BUT, WHEN A BAND DISAPPEARS AFTER ACTS SUCH AS BROWNSVILLE STATION AND LYNARD SKYNARD ARE OPENING FOR YOU AT YOUR SHOWS ,.YOU JUST KNOW YOU ARE , OR WERE GONNA BE HUGE.. MUCH MORE THAN WHAT YOU WERE… ESPECIALLY WITH ALREADY DOING BIG TOURS, HAD A LABEL THEY WERE SIGNED WITH & ALREADY HAD GOLD AND PLATINUM Albums… I grew up.with 3 Gold Albums on our Walls.. for years they were just cool to look at, but I wanted to play them on my turntable more than anything just to see if they’d play… And of course they would have played if I had ,. LoL
