Charley Crockett’s ‘Austin City Limits’ Debut to Stream Live

It would take one mean and ugly son-of-a-bitch to pry my eyeballs away from a computer screen come Wednesday night, July 28th where they will be firmly affixed upon Charley Crockett making his Austin City Limits debut via a live stream from Texas.
No, this won’t be the actual episode on PBS, but the raw and real performance they will eventually cull down into the TV presentation, meaning you’ll get more songs, all the between-song banter, everything. You only get one opportunity to see it, and then it’s gone. So set your alarm for 8 p.m. Central, and look alive.
I can attest, Charley Crockett and his band the Blue Drifters are on absolute fire at the moment after rousing performances at Red Rocks in Colorado, and Under The Big Sky Fest in Montana. Austin City Limits will likely be capturing Charley Crockett at the height of his powers, and you won’t want to miss it.
It also comes as Charley Crockett gets ready to release his latest album Music City USA on September 17th, and released a tribute honky tonk legend James Hand earlier this year called 10 for Slim. So who knows, we may get a James Hand song out of the deal as well.
Charley Crockett has that magnetic, real world quality that give his songs that lived-in, road-worn feel, and for good reason. From dirty streets to Western peaks and all points in between, Charley Crockett propped open his guitar case in many far flung destinations and played for your ragged dollar before anyone had the smarts to place a microphone in front of him and try to capture that magic for permanence and posterity.
Now opportunities continue to open for him, and you better see him on the road when you still have the opportunity to take it in at intimate venues.
You can watch the Austin City Limits debut HERE, or right here below and gab about it in the comments.

Tear It Up, Charley!
July 27, 2021 @ 1:16 pm
Hey Trig, is this something that ACL does every time or only occasionally?
Sometimes, the making of the event can be as interesting as the event itself.
July 27, 2021 @ 1:36 pm
They don’t do it every time, and I’m not exactly sure why some are and why some aren’t, but I’m sure the artist has some say so.
And I definitely think the making is more interesting. You’ll get more songs, more between song banter. It’s basically an hour long set as opposed to 25 minutes compacted down.

Are we allowed to comment on random other topics on here? College football is not mentioned in the article unless I am missing something.
July 27, 2021 @ 10:35 pm
Generally, off topic comments are discouraged, especially if it veers into politics, which rarely goes well. But as long as nobody is being harmed, I try to let stuff slide until it gets out of control.

Yeah, when Nirvana’s Unplugged finally came out on DVD, it was the entire show. The band only did one run-through of each song, so what you heard was all that they played. It was interesting hearing the spaces between songs that I had listened to dozens of times. Same thing with the Johnny Cash prison concert boxed sets.

He played on the second night of American Aquarium’s Road trip to Raleigh 2020. I usually go by myself but my husband agreed to go that night. He absolutely had the best time. Loved Charley.
July 27, 2021 @ 6:04 pm
Off the subject, but should we expect a hall of fame announcement in August?
July 27, 2021 @ 10:38 pm
I have no idea. Still no guidance has been issued about the 2021 Hall of Fame inductees. I would have though with COVID waning, we’d be returning to a normal rhythm for the Hall of Fame. They have said there will be a Medallion Ceremony in November, hypothetically for both the 2020 and 2021 inductees. But since that is completely private, it’s almost meaningless to the general public.
As soon as I hear something I’ll be letting folks know.

Gonna see Charley this weekend at Gruene Hall, can’t wait!
July 28, 2021 @ 6:21 pm
Those Blue Drifters are the real deal…sounding fabulous!
July 28, 2021 @ 3:25 am
Seen Charlie in at a small festival couple years back. Good show, small enough that after the set he was in the taco truck line, like he was just one of the crowd.
Got to Arlo McKinley at the same gig. Chris Knight as well. Great couple of days of music.
Now Arlo is getting good reviews and wider known.
Best wishes for both.

I gotta little kids that go to bed at 8. What are the chances I can pause this and not miss anything?
July 28, 2021 @ 5:19 pm
I don’t want to misguide you. I have tried that before and it has worked. But don’t know if it will in this instance. I definitely know it will not be available afterwards, but sometimes these live streams will cache and you can watch it in its entirety if it’s cued up.
July 28, 2021 @ 6:24 pm
Thanks I put em to bed as early as I can. It did work.
July 28, 2021 @ 6:06 pm
Damn that is one tight band he has going. And we aren’t even 10 minutes in.
July 28, 2021 @ 6:21 pm
Oh come on, pretty much anyone can wail on trumpet while playing piano with their left hand … and then play accordion on the next song.
These dues have been touring hard and playing big stages lately. This is the perfect time to capture them, when they’re road tight.
July 29, 2021 @ 10:18 am
Charley Crockett should count his lucky stars that he has a player like Kullen Fuchs. That kid can play anything by ear and is classically trained. I think he got an MFA in trumpet while at UK. Whoever put Charley’s band together definitely knew what they were doing…
July 28, 2021 @ 6:26 pm
I am SO freaking ecstatic to see people in the crowd dancing. Crowds in my area don’t dance much. I could sit in my damn chair I had to go full screen and dance along.
July 28, 2021 @ 6:32 pm
I don’t think I’ve ever seen folks straight up two stepping on Austin City Limits. It’s probably happened before, but either way, it’s super cool to see.
July 28, 2021 @ 6:34 pm
I’ve got tickets to see him on the east coast. Band is tight and sound great. Not sure how great Charley’s guitar skills are, it’s obvious the sound guy has it turned down. Not sure why he plugged it in.
July 28, 2021 @ 6:43 pm
I’m definitely noticing that his guitar sounds like it’s ever so slightly behind the beat. Could very well be a mixing thing coming through the live feed. We have to remember we’re watching a live production that’s not necessarily meant for prime time. I remember when Dale Watson played, there was a buzz in his guitar and they had to replay some songs. I think Turnpike Troubadours also replayed a song.
I saw Charley about a week and a half ago, and his guitar playing was spot on.
July 28, 2021 @ 7:21 pm
Ah so it wasn’t just me. I thought his guitar sounded off in the mix.
Even so, this may be the first time I say this about a country music show but I’ll get hyperbolic and say it, “The band melted my face off with that set.”
July 28, 2021 @ 6:52 pm
If anyone is keeping track of the set list, please post it.
July 28, 2021 @ 7:44 pm

The blue drifters are an amazing band. Just wow. Flowed effortless from style without missing a beat. Great show! Can’t wait for the new album!
