Chris Stapleton Lends “Our Song” to Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson is readying the release his 70th studio album called First Rose of Spring on April 24th via Sony’s Legacy imprint, and this time around he’s deferring a lot of the songwriting on the album to others.
Working with Buddy Cannon once again as producer, they’ve selected what so far have revealed themselves as a great collection of songs from top songwriters. The title track written by Randy Houser, Allen Shamblin, Mark Beeson is everything you would want from a late career song from Willie Nelson, and same goes for the second song just released from the record, “Our Song.”
At 86 years of age, and with the weight the Willie Nelson legacy carries, the simple timbre and tone from the country legend is enough to draw you in. And in these strange times, the sound of Willie Nelson is incredibly comforting and assuring all to itself, no matter what he’s singing. In this case, he’s chosen a composition from Chris Stapleton, returning the favor to Stapleton when the Kentucky superstar recorded Willie’s “Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning” on From ‘A’ Room, Vol. 1.
“Our Song” reminds us that the most important thing in our lives is each other. “You make it right when everything’s wrong,” Willie sings, which is a message that rings true as many sit virtually locked down with our loved ones due to the Coronavirus. One of the great aspects of a Willie Nelson performance is it always comes across as sincere. Where a song like this may seem a little too sappy coming from some performers, it’s sweet and welcomed coming from Willie.
Willie Nelson and Chris Stapleton were supposed to share the stage last weekend to help open the new Globe Life Park in Arlington, TX where the Texas Rangers baseball team will play, and this song was released to coincide with that event. But like everything else, it was postponed due to COVID-19. Another important point about “Our Song” is it assures us Chris Stapleton is writing once again, and don’t be surprised if we hear his own version some time in the future. Stapleton is due for a new single, and a new album himself.
There are more rowdy and upbeat songs coming from Willie’s First Rose of Spring. But “Our Song” feels just right, right about now.
First Rose of Spring is now available for pre-order.

Willie sure knows a good song when he hears one. Way to go, Chris!
March 17, 2020 @ 12:32 pm
He sure does. And like George Jones, Willie also makes any song sound like a good one. (This one is good on its own.)

That’s a mighty Damn Fine song! And a splendid performance by Willie. His upcoming album is on my to-buy list. The last few records by Willie have been absolutely wonderful.

Man… I love it. It doesn’t get any better. Willie is the greatest. And there’s so much that you hear in his voice, even things he doesn’t say. Sixty years of country music, a billion records, a trillion songs, a couple thousand types of Ford, bridges built, replaced and built again. If you look at the things that have happened globally just between the first willie record and the last, no library in the world could hold it all. But willies voice sure captures it.

The thing about Willie is that he sounds like a long lost friend sitting and singing around a bonfire with you. Always been one of my favs, and this is a great song.

Beautiful song!! Willie could sing facebook rants and make it sound mellow!
Just one minor thing about the article, Gary P. Nunn wrote “The Last Thing I Needed The First Thing This Morning” .. other than that, good job!
March 17, 2020 @ 8:55 pm

Country isn’t that much country anymore , But this writing by Chris and singing by Willie makes you wish this younger generation would take notice as to what country is and sounds like ❗❗

Why are these 2 dudes stealing songs from Taylor Swift? Chris Stapleton is so overrated and this Willie guy looks like he should have tried to start a career a long time ago. Watch you’ll say Taylor Swift isn’t country but it’s ok that these 2 guys that this trash website considers country take them as their own.
March 17, 2020 @ 10:41 pm
The only thing similar to this song and a Taylor Swift song is the title. Otherwise the songs have nothing similar at all. “Stealing songs”? Ludicrous.
BTW, Taylor Swift’s “Our Song” was one of the most country of her career. Still, not anywhere close to this.

It was a joke haha. I just wanted to see how convincing of a troll I could be. I’d say it worked. You should have known it was fake since I managed to spell halfway decently. I love the song and think it’s a great collaboration.
