Ellis Bullard Doubles Down on Honky Tonk for Sophomore Album

Down in Austin, there is a new hot shit country band everybody in town is raving over, from the hipsters and old fogies two-stepping at The White Horse and Sagebrush, to Joe Rogan himself. His name is Ellis Bullard, and he’s already busting out on the national scene and starting to fill rooms across the country from his version of “piss-hot freightlining country music.”
That isn’t just a description of the music, that was the name of Bullard’s breakout album from 2022. Now Bullard and his band are keeping their foot on the pedal and upping the ante with a new song, and a new album, both of which are called Honky Tonk Ain’t Noise Pollution. The new song is in your ears now, and the album will be out on Feel So Good Records come February 9th, 2024.
“These days the radio’s broken, everybody’s up for sale,” Bullard preaches in the opening phrase of the song while proudly holding a Peavy guitar on the album cover. Even after Joe Rogan shouted Bullard out numerous times and even wore his merch on the podcast, Bullard is still committed to keeping it real, and building this thing up via the grassroots.

Ellis Bullard comes from a long background of pickers and performers. His mom was sang down in Muscle Shoals studios back in the 60s and 70s, and his great grandfather was a guitar player hanging around the Chet Atkins orbit. Bullard has also been in a number of other bands, playing music on the road for going on a decade. But when he started his own with a bunch of players from other Austin projects, everything started to click and the crowds dug it.
Soon Ellis Bullard and his band were a going concern on a nightly basis, and folks were packing out the clubs whenever they played. It’s also important to emphasize that even though it’s Ellis Bullard’s name on the cover, he considers this a band effort, and Honky Tonk Ain’t Noise Pollution will be no different.
Austin already knows about this guy, but the rest of the world is about to find out. He’s playing Friday night (10-6) at the legendary Austin night spot Antone’s, then at the massive ACL Fest this weekend, then the iconic Honky Tonk Tuesday Night at the American Legion Post in Nashville on October 10th before heading back to Austin and The White Horse on the 11th.

What a nice surprise! I absolutely loved their first record and is yet another one I can thank SCM for introducing me to early last year. Keep hoping to see Ellis make his way a little further North because I’m sure their live shows are terrific.

His voice reminds me of Paul Cauthen, if Cauthen would cut honky tonk music instead of the hipster crap he’s generally chosen to cut thus far.

I hear a bit of Sturgill in his voice. Either way, these boys can play.
Side note: I think Cauthen is trying to outpace DAC in the wasted talent Olympics…

Catching ellis at the ol Pale Stallion is a fuckin religious experience. Guy rules. Recently caught jesse daniel there and a guy next to me had a fuckin seizure and i had to call 911, shit was wild. Jesse didn’t know it was happening and just kept playing “soft spot (for the hard stuff)” haha felt like i was in a damn music video, so much chaos. anyways yeah the ol Albino Equine rules, Ellis fuckin Bullard rules, and i love piss hot freightlining country music.
If Jeremy Pinnell ever plays the white horse i’ll freak out dude. place would run out of miller lites about 10 seconds into night time eagle. I love them big gurlz from bakersfield. Jeremy Pinnell rips. too much coffee and good tunes today (john r miller and john baumann albums slap) guys my bad

I feel like this disqualifies you from ever being allowed to mention anything about Goodbye L.A. ever again. And everyone here thought you were a REAL fan…

Made my heart jump thinking the new album came out today by surprise or something – considering Trigger doesn’t post album reviews unless the album is already out. Absolutely loved this dude’s first album though, at 23 minutes, it felt more like an EP to me. Looking forward to the new album.

Saw him three times when I was at in TX. He is f’in great. Really nice friendly guy too. First show, he opened for the Wilder Blue. Met him in the alley behind Antones when wife and I went to toke. Lol. He ended up playing a couple places we ended being after that. Each team me he saw us, he came over and talked with us and thanked us. His two biggest fans from Mass. lol

Ellis Bullard was probably my favorite find here on SCM last year. That funky Honky Tonk sound makes me want to hop in my truck, drive fast, and do donuts on the lawn. I don’t think I listened to anyone more than Ellis Bullard this summer. We need more country music like this. Can’t wait for this album to drop.

gotta love the AC/DC drop

This sounds awesome. Definitely want to check out the sound of that Peavey T60 he’s got there. I have a T15 that I like a lot for more dirty slide stuff but the T60 definitely has a lot more lower end and tone control.

As a huge fan of Whitey Morgan and the boys, this flows right in the same vein and I am here for it!
