Ian Noe Re-Emerges to Announces New Double Concept Album

In March of 2019, Saving Country Music proclaimed, “Remember the name Ian Noe, Music Fans.” After releasing his albums Between The Country (2019) and River Fools & Mountain Saints (2022), folks found out why. Though knowledge of his music still remains rather underground, for those devotees who’ve been following the Kentucky-based singer/songwriter with a rare voice and even more rare songcraft, few names loom larger. That is why the announcement of a new double album is being met with major excitement.
Though Ian Noe had a lot of momentum behind his back after his 2022 release, a broken wrist and cancelled shows resulted in a further downward spiral that had him taking an indefinite hiatus from music altogether, and virtually disappearing from the public space. It was a fair concern if we’d ever hear more Ian Noe music again, or if he’d perform more shows. But in a strange way, his absence only heightened the mystique around his music.
After finally re-emerging to play some shows recently, and releasing a tribute to Blaze Foley called “Jukebox Blues” in March, Ian Noe has announced the release of a new 16-song concept album called Canyon Falls Trailer Band. To be released on September 25th, it was produced by Andrija Tokic at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, with contributions from Russ Pahl on guitar, Charlie McCoy on harmonica, and Billy Contreras on fiddle.

The concept behind the album is said to be a fictional band called the “Canyon Falls Trailer Band” who play a one-off showcase trying to earn industry approval. The band showcases a mix of country and folk rock, and their performance becomes the stuff of legend, even if the ultimate fate of the band goes unknown in the fictional realm.
“It feels like the parent or maybe the grandparent of the first two records,” Ian Noe says of the project. “Once it was finished, I realized it brought together everything I’d been writing about over the last seven or eight years.”
Ahead of the album, Ian Noe has released the song “The Heidelberg Fisherman’s Ball” (listen below). Noe says about the song, “This is simply the story of a fisherman’s gathering down by the riverside where the various women of Heidelberg present themselves like a date auction and try to find a mate.”
Canyon Falls Trailer Band is now available for pre-save and pre-order.

Love the new song. Psyched for Sept 25.

So here’s one for the hive mind. I’ve been asking for quite a while whether there are any female songwriters who are like the equivalent of Ian Noe in terms of writing about dark material with that kind of vivid storytelling and a very straightforwardly country singer-songwriter sort of way.
Who’s out there that’s in the same general wheelhouse but is a female singer? I can think of loads of men (my favorite in this category besides Ian Noe is probably Long Haul Paul).
Gothic Americana /folk- punk singer songwriter Bandit Queen of Sorrows is probably the closest thing but that’s like a whole genre whose “dark” shock value is based partially on very heavy oversharing about taboo topics..
Ian is telling stories about other people with dark stories without necessarily getting too graphic like some of the folk punk women do.
I’ve been trying to put my finger on what makes this kind of songwriting work because he’s just such an inspiration for me.. It’s kind of like the best of Kris Kristofferson but with the tragedies turned up a notch. Who are the women artists who do this?
July 29, 2026 @ 8:07 pm
Anna Tivel I would say can work pretty dark, but without sacrificing the craft behind her writing.
July 29, 2026 @ 8:15 pm
Ooooooh I haven’t really listened to her. Thanks for that suggestion.
July 30, 2026 @ 9:56 am
A lot of people say Anna Snivel sounds like Elliott Sniff.
I’m not hearing it.

I came across some songs by Riddy Arman which might be what you’re talking about or refering to, though I am not sure.
Regardless, “Problems Of My Own” is a beautiful song in my opinion, and her cover of “Help Me Make It Through The Night” is beautiful as well in my view.
The songs I mentioned can be found on her youtube channel.
July 30, 2026 @ 11:35 am
Riddy Arman DEFINITELY falls in this category in her song writing. She only has an EP out so there’s not a lot to go on. I keep hearing that she’s going to resurface soon too. She had a kid shortly after that album came out and her career was a little on ice since then
July 31, 2026 @ 12:57 am
Stellar,
I think Riddy Arman’s songs and videos are “a vibe” as the kids say these days if I’m not mistaken. If I drank whiskey and had a record player, I can imagine this would be the kind of record I would listen to whilst sitting in my chair pondering things late at night with a glass of whiskey in my hand.
I remember listening to her songs on her youtube channel about one or two years ago. At that time I came across all kinds of new, for me, country or americana or whatever term is appropriate here -music that I really like. I think her songs “Old Maid’s Draw”, “Too Late To Write A Love Song”, and “Half A Heart Keychain” are excellent as well.
Anyway, if I am not mistaken you mentioned that you’re a songwriter. If that’s correct, is there a place where one could read, listen to, or see your songwriting work? I am curious now what type of music you make or the kind of lyrics you write.
July 31, 2026 @ 9:41 am
Riddy is unbelievable at painting a movie in your mind of her characters. The kid in Problems Of My Own is just such a realistic image of somebody who went through that kind of upbringing. Ian’s writing is like that. Like I said, he’s like Kristofferson but turned up a notch with all the decades behind him of other songwriters’ example, the songwriters who were probably influenced by Kristofferson et al.
Thanks for asking about my songwriting. here are some lyrics- I”m really interested in finding people to cowrite with.
I’m currently working on a bunch of stuff aout queer characters (and the AIDS era in the 80’s/90’s), and it’s pretty dark and political, so it’s definitely not for everybody:

Stellar,
Thank you for providing some examples, but I suck at all things computers and I don’t like to use google drive. I was kind of hoping for a bandcamp website, or personal website, or youtube channel, or link to a post on a facebook page or instagram page or whatever, to then be able to read, see, or even listen to some stuff. Thank you very much though for your efforts to provide some examples!
I recently (reluctantly) attempted to videochat with someone I had collaborated with years ago (on something non-music related) to talk about music and lyrics and that didn’t work out. I couldn’t get the whole camera and microphone thing working on my side. I saw that as a sign that I should stick to what I might be good at, and what fits with me and my brain and my style. Sending the occasional message to a musician fits much better with that. If I am not mistaken, I think I even sent a message to Riddy Arman via her website to share some lyrics I wrote. I think they might have been the lyrics I posted on here recently for a possible song titled “Because Of What You Told Me”, but I am not sure. I hope she will soon put out some more of her music!
Anyway, all the best with the lyric writing concerning the project you are currently working on. That’s not exactly in line with my interests and possible strong points I conjecture, but that’s okay I reason. Maybe you will post something differerent at one point in time on here in the comments and I will be interested to read that, or see that, or listen to that.
Thank you very much again for the reply. I haven’t given up yet!

Check out Emily Scott Robinson, especially her album Traveling Mercies. I love the song Ghost in Every Town.
Becky Warren also comes to mind.
July 30, 2026 @ 12:00 pm
Don’t forget Rennie Sparks, who writes almost all the lyrics for the Handsome Family, while her husband Brett composes the music. Her stories are deliciously creepy. Neko Case also comes to mind, though she no longer does country music. Neko’s more interested in mysterious interactions with nature rather than messed-up people.

Looks like John R Miller might have competition for AOTY
July 29, 2026 @ 11:16 pm
His last 2 albums were so good, I have pre-ordered it.
July 30, 2026 @ 3:54 am
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the cover he release of Springsteen’s Born in the USA. Gotta be one of the best original reworking of a cover song I’ve ever heard.
Really excited about this album. Glad this one’s back for more.
July 30, 2026 @ 12:34 pm
Any story behind why he released the Springsteen cover as a single?
July 30, 2026 @ 6:20 am
I heard about 11 of these songs when I saw Ian back at the end of 2024. I can say that without a doubt this is going to be an amazing album.
July 30, 2026 @ 7:06 am
Great song! So glad he’s back.
July 30, 2026 @ 7:11 am
Super excited for this. Ian Noe isn’t straight up country music but maybe more along the lines of a John Prine type which I personally tend to favor. Very intrigued to hear his tunes with this full band behind them.
July 30, 2026 @ 7:35 am
some of these songs must be a doozy, because the one he dropped isn’t even three minutes long. not sure how 16 tracks will make a double album. unless it’s two concepts?
July 30, 2026 @ 7:36 am
I’m very excited for this. Noe is great.
This is a minor nitpick, but I do find it funny that some artists consider a 16-song album a “double album”, while other artists like Zach Bryan, Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, etc. are releasing 25 song albums and just calling it an album.
July 30, 2026 @ 7:54 am
Ccr called seven eight tracks at 32 min albums so yeah 16 is definitely a double by true rock n roll standards
July 30, 2026 @ 8:22 am
Some of the best news in years!
July 30, 2026 @ 8:50 am
Cant listen to the song right now but i am def very excited. Some of the best news ive heard in a while. Great job trigger. This is news i would never even know about if not for your site. I know i give you a hard time sometimes on this or that but i def appreciate this site and what you do.
July 30, 2026 @ 12:02 pm
Can’t wait. So glad he went back to The Bomb Shelter and took his time again. River Fools was so much stronger because of it.
July 30, 2026 @ 12:06 pm
To say I’m excited about this news is an understatement. “River Fools” is still in my regular rotation, so I guess that means it’s become one of my all-time favorites, and that hadn’t happened for many years prior that record. Can’t wait.
July 30, 2026 @ 12:11 pm
Finally got tp listen, thats pure gold. To me its def far more country than what he has done in the past though i havent listened to everything hes done. Based off this n jukebox blues. It figures its going to have different influences. The record coming out sept 25th is nice for me. The beatles, who im a big fan of, are releasing their deluxe version of rubber soul which is my favorite of theirs, the next week so will be good times for me.
July 30, 2026 @ 1:46 pm
I’ve seen him once. First album tour. He was so intense and it was a small club. I remember someone yelling out “sing it like you mean it”and the whole place just laughed. Look forward to what is coming
July 30, 2026 @ 2:03 pm
Was happy when I caught the announcement of this new album!
Looking forward to a tour announcement in the near future. Have attempted to catch a show of his on 3 separate occasions that have not worked out (broken wrist, rain out, and we were too slow on finalizing a trip to Asheville to acquire tickets).
July 30, 2026 @ 5:19 pm
Can’t wait. Among the best songwriters out there.
July 30, 2026 @ 10:33 pm
Also- holy shit Billy Contreras is one of the greatest fiddlers alive. I know he’s basically a session musician and has played on a lot of other independent country artists stuff, but this is really exciting.
I wish the guy would record more solo stuff. He has a western contest version of Tombstone Junction that really needs to be out there in the instrumental standards world. I think it’s an old tune but mostly by guitar and banjo players or something like that
July 31, 2026 @ 12:21 am
Very good news! I’m re-listening “Beetween the Country” right now, he’s a good one
July 31, 2026 @ 6:38 am
so excited!! Love all his albums and this one will be a blast. hope to get him on tour here in Europe
July 31, 2026 @ 4:52 pm
Hamas agrees to disarm, Ian Noe announces a new album… maybe this ragged old world isn’t beyond saving after all.
July 31, 2026 @ 9:00 pm
This may be a dumb question but i dont care. I dont buy physical a lot cause i dont want lots of stuff my kids have to deal with when i go home but for ian im gonna do it. So is there a difference in buying the cd vs presaving the album on spotify. Which is better for him. I still plan on playing it mostly on spotify cause my cd player sucks.
August 7, 2026 @ 11:10 am
Fuckin love Ian Noe, and the new song is top form. Can’t wait
August 13, 2026 @ 2:44 pm
You kind of just vaguely throw in there that it features Charlie McCoy on harmonica. Are we talking about THE Charlie McCoy? Because if so I think that should have been stated with a bit more fanfare seeing as how integral he was to Dylan’s many masterpieces. It would definitely lend Noe’s album some major clout.
August 13, 2026 @ 2:55 pm
Yes, I believe it is THE Charlie McCoy. He’s been profiled on here many times. He’s a pretty regular studio musician in Nashville.
