Joe Rogan Admits It’s Him on Sturgill Simpson’s ‘Sound & Fury’

Many had their suspicions since Sturgill Simpson released his dystopian rock album Sound & Fury in 2019, but on the July 6th episode (#1679) of of the wildly-popular Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan himself fessed up: it is indeed him who can be heard on the radio spouting conspiracy theories in the opening of the first song “Ronin.”
While speaking with one of the first ever podcasters and former MTV personality Adam Curry, the topic of the always-controversial Alex Jones of Infowars came up. Joe did a quick impression of Alex Jones, saying, “Inter-dimensional child molesters, and they’re coming through your window in the middle of the night!” which had Adam Curry rolling.
After Curry compliments Rogan on his impersonation, Joe replies, “I actually play Alex Jones in Sturgill Simpson’s album. Sturgill Simpson and his most recent album, the opening segment the guy gets in the car, and he’s spinning through the radio dial, trying to find something to listen to, and there’s Alex Jones ranting and raving about the Illuminati, and that’s me.”
So yes, it is Joe Rogan impersonating Alex Jones who can be heard saying, “Ladies and gentlemen there is a overwhelming body of evidence that supports a conspiracy with a…”
For those that don’t know, Joe Rogan and Sturgill Simpson are friends, and Simpson first appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience Episode #780 in April of 2016. The appearance is given credit for helping to popularize Sturgill’s 2014 album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music. Simpson also appeared on the Joe Rogan podcast in March of 2018, and again in 2019.
If you’re curious, the relevant portion can be heard at the 57-minute mark of the Joe Rogan Experience, Episode #1679 available on Spotify.

Joe Rogan acts like such a tough, macho guy. As if he wasn’t a TV host & was on a lame 90s sitcom.
Dude is a sellout hipster. Brown-nosing Elon Musk & Sturgill will do that to any man.

You’re not describing anything unique among entertainers, media personalities, or radio hosts. Why the criticism? I’m not a Rogan stan or anything, but it seems he’s done his share to spread the good word about a few worthwhile country musicians. I’d say that’s a good thing, but I guess maybe that makes him a brown nosing hipster?

I prefer Jay Leno monologues & interviews from circa 1997
July 9, 2021 @ 10:51 am
Didn’t you hear? Hating on Joe Rogan is the new cool thing to do
July 8, 2021 @ 10:05 am
Dude literally came up going to smokers in Boston, studying and practicing various martial arts, and had a handful of amateur kickboxing fights before calling it quits. He still does BJJ today.
It’s not happenstance that he’s been a mainstay in UFC commentating for decades.
I wouldn’t try to pull his card, especially after seeing him kick a bag at 50 years old, but I’m also not hating on a dude for taking millions to host a game show.
July 8, 2021 @ 1:03 pm
You mean the same Joe Rogan who as Hank mentioned had amateur fights and blackbelt in bjj with and without gi (yes there’s a difference) and the same one that taught maybe the best MMA artist of all time GSP his spinning back kick? The same one that for the longest time held the record on the force machine at the UFC gym for a kick? That Rogan?

Yeah, another Simspon fluff piece! It’s been a full day. Hasn’t it? Jk
July 8, 2021 @ 11:04 am
Imma tell you something about me, Joe Rogan, that you might not know. I smoke rocks.
July 8, 2021 @ 6:15 pm
Made me laugh. Heck of a reference.
July 8, 2021 @ 10:11 am
I’m actually enjoying the increase in Stu news!!
July 8, 2021 @ 11:00 am
Sturgill for President!!
July 8, 2021 @ 11:22 am
I respect this record but I didn’t get it. Someone should put out a record and call it “Tom Sawyer.” The obscure literary reference bugs me.
July 10, 2021 @ 5:57 am
The Shakespeare, or the Faulkner? ; )
I like your record a lot.
July 10, 2021 @ 8:21 am
Oh no! I didn’t even know about the Shakespeare thing. I really have tried to love Faulkner because Bob Mcdill loves him, so I thought I should too. I got through As I Lay Dying and Light in August, but Absalom, Absalom really pushed my buttons. It’s like Faulkner defies you to read his books. Run on sentences and weird stream of consciousness rambling are both for the birds.
I always feel like Sturgil is talking down to his audience. That may be 100% my issue, but naming a record after an obscure Faulkner book named after a soliloquy
in a Shakespeare play is not helping. lol.
Glad you like the record.

I threw Faulkner’s S&F across the kitchen when I was in junior high. No one had told me Benjy had a mental issue so stick with it. What were the teachers thinking? As for Sturg, all I’ll say is that he seems to have a pretty high opinion of himself.
I’m enjoying Jesse Daniel’s work, too. Are there any PA musicians you like? Besides Stephen Foster …

I f’ing hated Moby Dick.
Read it on a dare/challenge, in ’05.
*shudder*
Affectionately refer to it as Moby the Dick, but was totally in Moby’s camp.
A classic my a**
The worst book ever.
And agree with you about Simpson.
July 8, 2021 @ 11:53 am
Where’s all the commenters mad at the Nelly article cause its not about country? Neither is this shitty indie rock album Simpson made.
July 8, 2021 @ 12:27 pm
Oh Joe Rogain don’t ever change!
July 8, 2021 @ 12:37 pm
I guess nobody has a job anymore?
Most of the comments here aren’t worth the time it took to post them.
Rather than making snide remarks about this website, Sturgill’s music, or Rogan’s career choices, please post links to your website, albums, or any worthwhile body of work you’re responsible for creating (as if).

Shit….we still on that government teat.
July 8, 2021 @ 5:13 pm
So only people that release albums can comment on other peoples albums?
Thats stupid.

Oh wow. I’m very impressed with the impression lol. I remember when I first listened to the album, all excited for new Sturgill, and at midnight right away I start listening to it and instantly in my head I’m going “wtf that’s Alex Jones”. Texted my friend about it. Never even considered it was someone else. Very good impression. I wonder if Jones himself would’ve done it if approached.
