UPDATED: John Moreland and Turnpike Troubadours’ Kyle Nix Tussle in Tulsa

This story has been updated.
If you need any more validation about how fellow singers, songwriters, and performers feel about Jamie Lin Wilson, appreciate who showed up to Tulsa’s legendary listening room the Mercury Lounge to see her sold-out performance Thursday night, August 1st. Along with songwriter Kalyn Fay, you also had legendary Tulsa songwriter John Moreland in the house, and at some point Kyle Nix from the Turnpike Troubadours showed up as well.
All accounts are that Wilson’s set was excellent, and thanks to the Mercury Lounge live feed, you can check it out yourself. Jamie performed with legendary guitarist David Abeyta, and bassist Bill Corbin who also plays in the Kyle Nix side project, Kyle Nix and the 38’s. Tulsa-based musician Paul Benjamin also played afterwards. But apparently the tiny Mercury Lounge wasn’t big enough to contain all that Tulsa talent Thursday night, and folks started butting heads.
Though the details are sketchy and can change depending on who you talk to, what is for certain is that it got physical between Kyle Nix and John Moreland. The two were seen talking first, and then at some point a fight broke out. Nix was reportedly standing and shouting in the face of Moreland who was sitting on a stool. Moreland shoved Nix back from him, and Nix responded by pulling John Moreland’s stool out from under him, and kicking him on the ground. Moreland then allegedly got back to his feet, and started punching Nix.
Some of this is confirmed via a now-deleted Instagram story where John Moreland stated,
Hey guys, little Texas country fun fact. If you ever happen to get in a fight with Kyle Nix, the tiny fiddle player from the Turnpike Troubadours…uh, and he pulls you out of your bar stool and starts kicking you in the head a few times… Don’t worry because he’s four feet tall, and it’s just going to feel like a fu–ing third-grader is kicking you in the head. And then you can get up and start wailing on his face, and it’s all good. Fu-k that guy.”
What John Moreland left up was two textual Instagram posts that simply read, “Fu-k that whole band,” and “Except Hank.”

The “whole band” can assumed to be the Turnpike Troubadours, and “Hank” is very likely Hank Early, Turnpike’s steel guitar/accordion/dobro/banjo player who officially joined the band in 2017.
Apparently the police were never called. Multiple individuals broke up the altercation, and Kyle Nix was escorted outside while John Moreland finished his drink with a ripped shirt at the bar as the Mercury closed for the evening.
Saving Country Music has reached out to both Kyle Nix, as well as the publicist for John Moreland for comment, but neither have responded at the time of this post. More information if or when it becomes available.
UPDATE (8-3): In a further post on his Instagram story, John Moreland posted a photo of one of Uncle Bekkah’s Inappropriate Trucker Hats that simply says, “Except Hank” and states, “Ok even though this is kinda hilarious, I’d like to say I regret bringing anybody else in the band into my issue I was just angry and being an asshole, I’m sorry to those guys My problem is with Kyle only and honestly it’s not even that much of a “problem,” we just got in a bar fight and I think he sucks now. I think that’s reasonable.”

It’s unfortunate there is beef between two of Oklahoma’s premier songwriting and performing outfits. Hopefully in the future, cooler heads can prevail, and everyone can appreciate that we’re all tugging on the same yoke in independent music, and trying to bring the brilliant music of Oklahoma to the world.
This story has been updated with further details of the altercation as well as the additional statement from John Moreland.

Moreland trying act hard like that fatass could get off the ground in under a minute lololol
August 2, 2024 @ 7:24 pm
Big talk from some rando on the internet hiding behind a pseudonym.
August 2, 2024 @ 7:51 pm
I am able to get off the ground in under a minute, I promise
August 2, 2024 @ 11:57 pm
We believe you, tough guy.
August 5, 2024 @ 6:24 am
I guess that would sort of depend on who put you on the ground and how they did it.
August 2, 2024 @ 5:58 pm
I got to see John Moreland open for Evan Felker at The Mercury this February. It was one of the more amazing nights of music I’ve been a part of. Evan covered John Moreland’s “Sweat & Cigarettes” and Moreland hung out and watched all of Evan’s set. It’s hard to imagine what could’ve happened between them all since then to make him write “Fuck that whole band”.
August 2, 2024 @ 6:13 pm
Yeah, there are a lot of Lookey Lou’s who will love the salacious details of this story, but the last thing we need is two of the titans of Oklahoma songwriting in a public beef.
August 2, 2024 @ 7:31 pm
That’s the only part of this where I’m a liittle surprised. Shit happens. I’ve had beef with best friends and we’ve talked shit. But I’ve never run to Instagram to talk shit about my boys like that. Not sure why Moreland would say that about the whole band. Really dissapointing coming from him without details. Clearly he has an issue with nix but you can’t say shit like that without cause.
August 2, 2024 @ 6:06 pm
Damn this sucks and hopefully like you said Trig, better heads prevailed. They’ve played dozens of shows together over the years and Moreland has done some great TT covers. I guess optimistic side is maybe some good songs will come out of it
August 2, 2024 @ 6:34 pm
John Moreland is a generational talent. Kyle Nix plays violin as a side man and his solo band isn’t very good. Well, wasn’t very good as they split up. So, go John. Whatever the fight was about I am on his side.
August 2, 2024 @ 6:42 pm
He got to stay and finish his drink while the other guy was escorted out, that might be an indication of who was at fault.
August 2, 2024 @ 7:50 pm
“Generational talent?” Really?
What’s his signature song that everyone knows? Are you talking writing, performing, playing?
Because honestly… he’s kind of boring
August 3, 2024 @ 2:50 am
Not sure what “generational talent” means, exactly, but I have no doubt he’s a great songwriter. He’s not as well known as he could be, but it’s true that his style probably isn’t going to fill arenas. Great songs? Offhand I’d list Cherokee, Gospel and Heart’s Too Heavy as among my favorites.
August 2, 2024 @ 8:10 pm
Hey maybe we can be fans of both dudes and don’t have to take sides in a personal beef.
August 3, 2024 @ 7:59 am
This is the Internet. There’s no room for being reasonable here.
August 2, 2024 @ 11:49 pm
I’ll never forget how Kyle and his wife talked shit about Evan on Twitter when the band broke up. He’s a pos.
August 3, 2024 @ 8:03 am
I don’t recall Kyle Nix “talking shit” on anyone during the breakup. But you might be right. I didn’t see everything. I do recall his wife at the time talking shit on a lot of folks, including myself. She was one of the ones that insisted Turnpike would never get back together, along with a Turnpike Troubadours Facebook group. Me saying, “Never say never” was apparently verboten enough that my name (and all of my articles) became mud with those folks. I know, the audacity of me. Turns out those were wise words. Meanwhile, not sure where that Facebook group is, and Kyle Nix is divorced. So I’m not sure we should hold any of that over Kyle Nix’s head.
I really don’t have a dog in this race. I respect both individuals. But there does seem to be this notion that “Kyle Nix is a POS” that I don’t quite understand. When Evan Felker was having issues, it really was Nix who stepped up to try and re-instill some energy in the band. I saw him backstage at Under The Big Sky Fest a few weeks ago. He seemed nice and personable to me. But I’m media, so sometimes that’s what you get.
I think we should let the dust settle a little bit before deciding who to delete on social media.
August 2, 2024 @ 6:40 pm
“If the boys wanna fight, you better let ’em.”
August 2, 2024 @ 8:00 pm
That’s fine but why run to Instagram to talk shit?
August 2, 2024 @ 8:15 pm
: D You do understand i was trying to bring some light-heartedness into the mix – right?
Was almost quoting, THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN.
From one of my favorite, albeit stupid, Heath Ledger movies.
August 3, 2024 @ 8:36 am
I got it…and liked it!!!
August 2, 2024 @ 6:41 pm
Sad to hear this…hate crap like this. Mercury Lounge IS a tiny venue and I can see why tempers might get short there.
August 2, 2024 @ 6:47 pm
That’s country…and western.
August 3, 2024 @ 5:45 am
Best comment 😂
August 2, 2024 @ 6:47 pm
Love Kyle Nix’s fiddle playing but the guy has always seemed like a…. well, let’s just say… unlikable individual.
August 2, 2024 @ 7:39 pm
Yes, because writing “fuck that band” on Instagram is likeable.
August 3, 2024 @ 3:04 am
Maybe something has changed, but I spent time with them and him on multiple occasions back before they were superstars and he was just like the rest of them – regular dude big country music fan nice guy.
August 2, 2024 @ 8:03 pm
Hell yeah, brother
August 2, 2024 @ 8:11 pm
We’ve all heard vague rumors about Turnpike from back in the day. I wouldn’t be shocked if, even now, there we some members with… Personality Flaws… In that band. That said, it’s weird John has beef with all of them.
August 2, 2024 @ 8:19 pm
That’s it. John may have a grievance here. But I question his credibility when he’s throws that out there out of nowhere. Either he’s been holding a secret or nix hurt his feelings.
August 2, 2024 @ 9:15 pm
If we read this exact story (minus Instagram) recalling an incident between two country singers/band members in the 70s, we’d think it was funny or badass. Hope they mend things between each other. I’ll continue happily listening to both.
August 2, 2024 @ 9:57 pm
This is the best comment I’ve read on here all week.
It would be awesome if the two dudes made a duet about it years later, perhaps with a sampling of BJS’s “Where Do You Want It?”
August 3, 2024 @ 7:56 am
Hell, Merle swindled Waylon at cards when Waylon was super strung out, and Waylon apparently never forgave him.
August 3, 2024 @ 2:56 pm
And Waylon tied George Jones to a tree in his front yard, though that does actually seem more reasonable. I’m sure Hag probably had a divorce to pay for when they were playing cards. I don’t know, just speculation 😂 but that is kind of fucked up.
August 3, 2024 @ 7:47 pm
I have a feeling both Merle and Waylon were strung out.
Waylon was great at being a martyr.
August 2, 2024 @ 9:30 pm
Sounds like the Mercury had some throwback punks and daytime drunks😅 sorry couldn’t resist.
August 2, 2024 @ 11:39 pm
Indie country music is getting so big we now have our own beefs like in the hip hop world!!!
A question for the American commenters where does the expression ” beef” come from?
August 3, 2024 @ 7:33 pm
I have been told it comes from disagreements over cattle, with ranchers. Stuff like that is usually difficult to actually determine but I do know its usage is very old in the U.S., probably from the time of the westward expansion.
August 2, 2024 @ 11:44 pm
Another IG update from Moreland:
Ok even though this is kinda hilarious, I’d like to say I regret bringing anybody else in the band into my issue I was just angry and being an asshole, I’m sorry to those guys My problem is with Kyle only and honestly it’s not even that much of a “problem,” we just got in a bar fight and I think he sucks now. 🤷♂️
I think that’s reasonable
August 3, 2024 @ 7:49 am
The story has been updated with this information.
August 3, 2024 @ 2:30 am
Kicking someone in the head is always a pussy move. If that is what happened.
August 3, 2024 @ 5:18 am
Went to John’s Instagram after reading this story and saw that he updated things and took back what he said about “the whole band”. Which was nice to see honestly. I don’t want two of my faves fighting lol.
August 3, 2024 @ 5:43 am
The Mercury Lounge really is the best roudy shithole music bar in the lland. This is literally the best.
August 3, 2024 @ 7:18 am
Oh yeeaaaahhh! Snap into a Slim Jim!!
August 3, 2024 @ 8:07 am
In the old days, we never heard about this kind of thing until much later, like Roy Nichols throwing a guitar at Buck. Can you imagine if we had social media in cell phones when Hank Sr., Cash, Jones, Merle and the rest were out on the road 300 nights a year? Epic.
August 3, 2024 @ 9:14 am
I would imagine that some alcohol may have been involved.
August 3, 2024 @ 11:44 am
Kyle Nix announced he was sober a few years back. No idea if that is still the case. Grown men getting into a bar fight would certainly point toward alcohol
August 4, 2024 @ 4:30 pm
Sadly this is no longer the case. He’s been on it hard.
August 3, 2024 @ 10:25 am
Making fun of someone being short (which they can’t control) while you’re obese hmm
I like both their music though!
August 3, 2024 @ 11:43 am
What is considered worse? Fatshaming or shortshaming?
August 3, 2024 @ 11:48 am
When I brought up John Moreland out of the blue to my wife her response was “oh no, he’s not dead is he”. Honestly with his stature, a fair concern
August 3, 2024 @ 7:48 pm
Shortshaming.
Someone can’t control their height.
A person can control their bulk.
August 4, 2024 @ 6:36 am
Am 5’1″.
Know what i appreciate?
Seems like Every time i pop the hood on a vehicle it’s instant man.
“Can I help you with something, Miss?”
“Here, let me get that.” Etc., etc.
Generally, just refilling the windshield washer fluid, but Heaven help you that you are petite, short, itty bitty.
Pop a hood on a vehicle and get out of your own way.
And everytime, after thanking these gentlemen, take time to pray for them, before getting back on the road.
Thanking God for them.
August 5, 2024 @ 6:39 am
we now know that ck is a short guy which honestly explains so much.
August 5, 2024 @ 9:52 am
Actually, troll, I am over six feet tall.
Overanalyzing someone pointing out a basic fact explains your dime-store reasoning on every topic.
August 3, 2024 @ 2:57 pm
Tremendous moxie for a man of his stature…
August 8, 2024 @ 2:06 pm
You and my kid brother would have killed for this jacket!
August 3, 2024 @ 3:18 pm
A grey text bubble tells me someone else wrote “fuck that whole band honestly” to John and he took a screenshot of it and posted it. Curious who wrote it but also, don’t care haha
August 3, 2024 @ 5:26 pm
Very standard, per-the-norm Mercury/Oklahoman activities, nothing to see here.
August 4, 2024 @ 7:06 am
One thing’s for sure, more people know who Jamie Lin is now compared to a week ago. Good work boys!
August 4, 2024 @ 1:31 pm
LOL, time to beat some chop!
Bounced my way through college and law school working honky tonks and rock joints. Only real issues were the crowds hard rockers brought in. Bikers, speeders & bouncers/bartenders on their night off. Six bucks an hour cash seemed like a dream in 1980.
August 5, 2024 @ 5:57 am
Fuck em all
August 6, 2024 @ 7:01 am
Two things:
John Fullbright played the opening happy hour weekly residency set before Jamie Linn.
And, there’s lots of ongoing hostilities between talented individuals in the Tulsa scene, and every other community of individuals everywhere, that doesn’t become grist for the rumor mill simply because it doesn’t break out in drunken bouts of violence in a popular venue.
August 7, 2024 @ 8:52 am
two god totin’, gun fearin’ patriots right there!
