Marty Stuart Joins The Shootouts for New Song Ahead of Album
If one of the things that gets your motor running is takeoff Telecaster guitar in a country song, then waste no time piping up the new track from The Shootouts. Ohio’s official throwback traditional country honky tonk band has a new album on the way called Stampede releasing on February 24th. But first they’re looking to woo you with the new single “Better Things To Do” (listen below).
No, that’s not Marty Stuart playing the hot lead guitar. He comes in later on the track playing his original instrument, the mandolin. Marty is just one of many collaborators The Shootouts lined up for the new album. It also includes appearances by Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, Raul Malo of The Mavericks, and Ray Benson along with Asleep At The Wheel. In fact, Ray Benson acted as producer for the album with Sam Seifert.
“The Shootouts do it all: Great songs, great pickin’ and always lookin’ sharp,” says Ray Benson. ‘Stampede’ encompasses all forms of American roots music, which is no small feat to do well. You’ll be singing along in no time! If you don’t already know The Shootouts, you will now!”
The Shootouts weren’t exactly planning on releasing a new album this year after releasing the Chuck Mead-produced Bullseye in 2021. But when Ray Benson agreed to produce a new album, they couldn’t help but oblige. Though Akron, Ohio isn’t exactly an epicenter of country music, that rust belt authenticity nonetheless makes a good backdrop for The Shootouts, and they’ve made a name for themselves in the Midwest and well beyond, getting nominated for Best Honky Tonk Group at the upcoming 2023 Ameripolitan Awards.
The musicianship is one of the things that has allowed The Shootouts to thrive. The band is comprised of lead singer and guitarist Ryan Humbert, vocalist Emily Bates, lead guitarist Brian Poston, and bassist Kevin McManus. Stampede also features extended Shootouts members Dylan Gomez on drums, Ryan McDermott on bass, and longtime mentor and collaborator Al Moss on guitar.
The list of anticipated releases for 2023 is beginning to populate, and with the new song “Better Things To Do,” The Shootouts and Stampede are definitely on it. To be released through Soundly Music, Stampede is now available for pre-save and pre-order.

That’s a nice jam! The Shootouts are a good little band. Saw em at Carol’s with Steel Blossoms, think it was last year? Made for a very fun evening. They’re here next Tuesday night the 25th up the street from me @ the coolest venue in the area Hey Nonny. Gonna do my best to get there because…….. wait for it…….. I don’t have Better Things To Do.

The main thing that all these throwback acts lack, is a great singer. These acts get the sound, the feel, and the look mostly right, but they always have pedestrian vocalists; who can best be described as: not bad. C(c)ountry singers are apparently extremely hard to find.
The only vocalists who’ve impressed me over the last decade are solo performers who mostly get overlooked.

Dang King Honky, that is a great video. Pure voice with no auto tune! Pretty impressive.

Great stuff! Thanks for posting. I’m sure I’m not the only one to be immediately reminded of Keith Whitley, and I see he’s covered Keith, so clearly that’s no accident. I also agree with what you say about a lot of great bands not having great singers, but not many bands can have everything, and it’s probably true that a lot of bands that have great singers are bands that aren’t as great as they are.

Here, here!
Nice aria.
A little Colter Wall-ish.
& speaking of Canada, saw first opera in Montreal.
A Western opera.
Lots of snickers and giggles when they rolled the horse on stage.
Since we all went ’round and ’round sometime ago about how Wall was affecting his voice, do you think Bannister is doing the same thing?

It’s a shame that these young folks have worked incredibly hard, in an incredibly hard field, to have earned the support of music legends (like Marty, etc.) and yet you found it appropriate to leave a negative comment like this. From behind a computer screen nonetheless. Must not have been taught the golden rule. Be sure to let us know when your next album is coming out.

This band doesn’t have a great singer, which is par for the course for these types of bands. I’m stating that, on a Country Music website, in the comments section for an article about this band.

And Will Banister is, for all intents and purposes, mostly overlooked.

Not around here. This is where Honky found out about him when I posted about Will’s song getting into the latest Clint Eastwood movie.

True that. And here’s how I ended a couple of comments I posted here 9/22/21 in response to your article about the “Cry Macho” soundtrack : “Once again, Trig, thanks for making me aware of a singer and music I can get into.”

I grew up with the lead guitarist (Brian). He’s about as legit as they come and a helluva talented guy. When we were in high school me, him and his cousin were the only guys listening to traditional country….we were really country before it was cool. So happy to see this band doing big things and putting Akrons country scene on the map!
