Marty Stuart’s Surf Guitar Album is Finally On The Way

For years now the indomitable Marty Stuart has been teasing us mercilessly about a surf guitar album or some sort of instrumental work that he’s had in the can, but divulging only scant details and never giving a a solid answer about when it would finally be released. As a certified twanger among his many other attributes, we couldn’t wait to get more info on this elusive project.
Well ladies and gentlemen, here it is. Finally.
Let’s get the (somewhat) bad news out there first, which is you won’t be able to sit online waiting for midnight Eastern for this thing to populate on the release day. It’s being released exclusively as part of Record Store Day on April 12th via Snakefarm Records, at least initially. That means you’ll have to change out of your pnajamas, hoof it down to whatever passes for your Sam Goody these days, and push past someone looking for Gloria Estefan Live in ’85 or whatever other silly RSD exclusive to score your copy.
The good news is that all indications are that Marty Stuart’s double instrumental LP officially titled Space Junk will be completely badass.
“Instrumentals have always been a part of the Fabulous Superlatives repertoire, but this is the first completely instrumental album we’ve done, largely inspired by two of my favorite bands from Sixties, The Ventures and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass,” Stuart says. “They did some dangerously cool instrumental records. We’ve done bluegrass, gospel and country records. Our hearts just led us to this one.”
The “Fabulous Superlatives” are Marty Stuart’s legendary backing band of course, consisting most recently of “Cousin” Kenny Vaughan on guitar, Harry Stinson on the skins, and Chris Scruggs on bass.
“‘Space Junk’ turned us back into kids with our first guitars. We thought the world needed a fresh instrumental album by a pretty good band so we composed 20 instrumentals and took them to the microphones.”

Just like Marty Stuart’s last two releases, 2017’s Way Out West, as well as 2023’s Altitude, Space Junk is very much inspired by country music from the West Coast.
“The creative atmosphere of California always gives me the feeling that the sky is the limit,” Stuart said. “‘Space Junk’ is California music. If you want a specific sound, you go to certain places in the world. For the California sound, it’s Capitol. You’ve got the blue skies, the legacy, the romance, and a lot of friendly ghosts. The atmosphere makes you do a little better.”
True to his word, Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives recorded the album at Capitol Recording Studios in Hollywood. Other tracks were recorded in Nashville at the House of Blues studio, which rests near the Woodlawn Cemetery where George Jones, Marty Robbins, and others are buried. Specifically, that’s where the song “Graveyard” from the new album was recorded.
And of course, Marty Stuart spent much of the time playing legendary West Coast country picker Clarence White’s famous 1954 B-Bender guitar. It’s the same guitar Stuart played on his 2010 song “Hummingbyrd” that went on to win a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental. So yeah, Stuart knows how to entertain folks without singing.
“I hope Space Junk takes the listeners for a ride,” Stuart says. “It makes me forget my problems and remember why I play guitar and get to dress up in cowboy clothes. It reminds me I’m okay, and I want it to do the same for you. Mainly, I want to inspire some kid to go to the store, buy an instrument, and make a difference. This concept was passed down to us from the old heroes. If we can serve the same role, mission accomplished.”
Only 1,700 of these puppies will be made according to Record Store Day, and peppered around at local record stores. Happy hunting!

I think this will eventually get a wider release, maybe not on vinyl, but we’ll at least be able to listen to it.
I’d love to hear Marty do an instrumental mandolin record myself.
March 5, 2025 @ 10:37 am
Looking forward to it as well! Hard to believe no single has been released yet.
March 5, 2025 @ 11:09 am
Marty is the best, the other great news is that Chris Scruggs will be a resident at the new Skinny Dennis in Nashville with his band. Chris is a top notch player and person in general in my opinion!

These guys are unbelievable live. They are my favorite touring band right now, and I’ve seen the Stones lol.
March 8, 2025 @ 6:26 pm
I saw them do an acoustic show that frankly blew away most acts that get plugged in. Any time they come through I forced my friends to go.

who wants to listen to surf guitar ? what a dumbass yeah that might be great if it was 1963 again.
March 5, 2025 @ 5:26 pm
To a true music lover the 60’s are eternal.

Who’s a gwumpy boy? Run, don’t walk, to get this.
March 8, 2025 @ 6:27 pm
Nice. I can’t wait for it to come down the pipeline I venture it will be awesome.
March 8, 2025 @ 7:20 pm
I’ll give you a wave when it comes out

Hey Vern,
I get you. From a guitar player POV, that twang Dick Dale sound holds a lot of appeal. Something about that slappy wet dripping reverb and echo effect that’s like ear candy to a picker. I haven’t met a musician yet who doesn’t smile when they hear it. It’s fun to play. Pipeline, Walk Don’t Run and Misirlou are must learns for any guitarist who wants to learn retro or vintage sounds. Marty and the boys typically play a few of those every live show.

A whole lot of folks who appreciate taste, tone & timing in music like to listen to Surf music, that’s who.
March 7, 2025 @ 7:33 pm
Go watch some You Tube videos of The Sufrajettes. Then write back and tell us what you’ve learned.

A very expensive article. I’m going to have to buy a record player, do all the stuff you said on record day, then learn how to convert the LP into MP3’s, then transfer it into my Apple Music library.
A decade ago, record day stuff was still appearing on the not so kosher download sites. Those kids have moved on and probably Marty Stuart wouldn’t have showed up on their radar.
March 5, 2025 @ 3:42 pm
The record players that directly convert to MP3 like the Ion brand, don’t have pitch control and will typically play records too fast. Most cheap record players play a quarter step too fast. If that doesn’t matter to you, you can find them used for under $50.
There are a lot of ways to record off of a record player to digital. I did it with some of my vinyl albums that are only on vinyl and are rare. Considering how most new albums cost around $30 a $200 record player isn’t that much – and the quality difference is quite dramatic compared to the cheap ones at Walmart.
March 5, 2025 @ 3:45 pm
My guess is this album will be released digitally at some point. If you can’t wait, I completely understand. But my guess is Marty didn’t invest all that time into this album to not give it a wide release. “When” is the only question.
March 6, 2025 @ 2:56 pm
It’s kinda cool that he is first releasing it on vinyl. Some of my favorite steel guitar instrumental albums are out of print and only on vinyl.
March 5, 2025 @ 4:31 pm
Thanks for the advice. I’m going to invest in a higher end player. It’s time.
March 6, 2025 @ 1:11 am
Look up Audio Technica. Audiophiles may disagree but I’m 100% certain that it’s a huge leap above suitcases or all-in-one models.
March 6, 2025 @ 9:03 am
Yep. I’ve got a Technics SL 1200 which is a go to for many. Audio Technica makes a very affordable version of that Technics model, just packaged under a different name. You can put a high end cartridge and stylus on it and you are ready to rock for under $500.
March 6, 2025 @ 2:48 pm
It’s hard to go wrong with a record player that is $200 or above. I use a Project brand one but I won’t talk down any of the other brands mentioned. If it doesn’t have a built in preamp, your audio receiver will have to have a preamp. It’s not hard to find a decent audio receiver for around $50. And it’s not hard to connect from there to a computer and use an open source software like OBS, which is free, to transfer the audio to your computer. One of my side hustles is thrifting and I have scored so much audio equipment from Goodwill stores, not to mention floor speakers and other crap.
March 5, 2025 @ 2:56 pm
Already emailing record stores to see who might be stocking it. Marty is the bomb and an instrumental double LP is very intriguing. Still have my turntable hooked up to my very loud stereo and looking to rattle some windows soon…
March 5, 2025 @ 3:27 pm
The Ventures meet Herb Alpert? A Dave Brubeck Take Five-inspired album cover? Stereo fidelity? I’m in.
March 5, 2025 @ 3:37 pm
That Dave Brubeck album is cool. I still have a cassette of it in my car.
March 5, 2025 @ 5:43 pm
Twenty originals? That’s one long summer drive I’m looking forward to.
Elliott Easton (The Cars) put out a nice Tiki album a few years ago.
Instrumentals are cool.
March 5, 2025 @ 8:51 pm
I hope I will know as soon as CDs become available. I still like my CDs, and as a long-retired country DJ (and former WSM personality), I totally LOVE Marty and Ms. Connie.

Cool. Gonna go see Marty and the boys in about a month. I’m guessing we’ll hear some of these.
March 6, 2025 @ 10:55 am
I hope it eventually gets a digital or at least a CD release since I do not have an LP player and do not plan on getting one.
March 6, 2025 @ 6:18 pm
So I suppose this means Songs I Sing In The Dark is officially dead, then. Even the videos were removed from Marty’s channel last I checked, and he didn’t even get through the whole set of uploads to begin with.
March 8, 2025 @ 6:30 pm
Surf rock?! Hell yeah one of my favorite niche genres. And I know Marty will deliver. This guys know his roots/history and isn’t fooling around. I just hope it’s gets a proper tour so I drag everyone I know along with me.
