New Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Playlist (#179)

Summer is officially in full swing, so what better time to juice up the Top 25 Playlist with some fresh entries. No matter where you turn, new strong country songs, and very promising artists are emerging, so much so simply keeping up with them is a challenge.
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to.
Newest Additions:
Kimmi Bitter – “Love Me or Leave Me” – Kimmi Bitter is a national treasure, whether the nation knows it yet or not. Many performers can sing good and get your toe tapping. Few if any can so consistently make chills run up and down your spine with their incredible interpretation of classic country like Kimmi Bitter can. Hopefully “Love Me or Leave Me” is the first taste from a new album on the way.
Walker Montgomery – “I Don’t Think I Will” – Walker just continues to impress with one single after another. The son of John Michael Montgomery has the voice and the instincts to fill the shoes slowly being vacated by all those old traditional country greats. The only thing he’s lacking at this point is a debut LP.
Joe Abbott, Cat Clyde – “You’ll Never Know My Heart” – This is a super fun little song that throws it back to the time when country and jazz were close cousins, complimented by a great appearance by Cat Clyde. Reminds you a lot of vintage Wayne “The Train” Hancock.
Tyler Richards – “The Sad Inside” – Get Tyler Richards on your radar now as he threatens to be one of the next big names to emerge out of the Austin music scene. His music comes with a country sound, but a strong songwriting component usually reserved for the Americana set. His EP Unwind is out now.
Alex Amen – “California Blues” – Alex Amen has an uncanny knack for evoking era through his music. He proves it again with this tune from his upcoming country folk album Son of Amen out June 12th. This song reminds you of the best of ’60’s folk-inspired country, with the steel guitar really setting it off.
Grace Maher – “Make It Uneasy” – There are so many great women making great classically-inspired country songs at the moment, it’s hard to keep up. Originally from Kansas and now living in Nashville, Maher distinguishes herself from the crowd with the spine-tingling moments of “Make It Uneasy.”
Valley Flower – “Lost and Lonesome Ways” – The playlist is always better with a little bit of bluegrass. Austin’s new favorite bluegrass band Valley Flower doesn’t offer a little bluegrass with their new single, but a big heaping helping of it served up hot. Hold on tight and enjoy the singing and songwriting of leader Rose Lichenfels.
Don Williams – “I’m The One” (Original Version) – Don Williams has graced us from beyond with the release of his Epilogue: The Basement Tapes, bringing to life previously-unheard recordings. We might argue back and forth about whether this version or the alternate also on the album is best. But nobody’s complaining we’re getting to hear new-to-us tunes from The Gentle Giant himself.
Coleman Jennings – “Good While It Lasted” – Some are calling Coleman Jennings’ new Western-inspired album Lead You Home one of the best of the year so far. His vocal delivery is definitely an acquired taste, but on tracks like “Jamie” and “Good While It Lasted,” he finds a more universal appeal.
Kaitlin Butts – “Never Really Mine” – “Never Really Mine” is a pure, traditional country song with steel guitar, a waltz beat built from brushes on snare, and super country writing from Kaitlin Butts at her “double cross me and die” best. It’s also such an excellent showcase for Kaitlin’s voice, especially her strong top range, which she exploits so expertly in the song.

Kimmi’s most recent IG post mentioned that the new song is the first look at her new album, she was also posting test pressings

OK the Tyler Richards’ song hit my ears so perfectly it led me straight to his EP which is excellent. This is why you make the big bucks Trigger, finding artists like Tyler. Although only half credit on this one since he hails from your hometown!
Releases getting lots of love in the last couple of weeks from my speakers include Ben Chapman’s funky country rocker album Feet on Fire. “It Takes a Dreamer” is a beautiful little love song with his wife Meg and is residing firmly nearly the top of my favorite songs at the halfway point of ‘26. I stumbled upon Cassidy Daniels’ EP a couple weeks ago which released back in February and I’ve been cranking it every day since. She finished as runner up on The Road but should have won. She’s got a soulful powerhouse voice showcased to great effect on the country rockers but then shows she can take it down and deliver a sad song gut punch with “Lie Better”. Lastly Rob Baird’s album “Smoke on the Breeze” has so many great songs I can’t pick my favorite but “Someday” with Julianna Rankin hits especially hard with nothing more than light acoustic guitar strums and two of the best voices Texas has to offer perfectly blending together.

Tyler Richards got on my radar via The Hook. He showed up and played a few weeks ago and made a big impression.

Might get added next time. Ran out of slots. Might have a whole write-up on his upcoming album here shortly.

Alright you guys, it’s been 4 weeks and I hope you have patience and a sense of humor because this ain’t gonna be short, but you might chuckle…… feel free to just bypass this post or banish me back into hibernation. We’ll start with the obvious: Bitter and Butts went straight into the rotation. Ben Jarrells’ new band The Night Sights are working on songs and getting ready to hit the road. Beware, it’s not Country or Americana. I’ve got a rehearsal tape (I love saying tape…lol) and it’s more jazzy, prog, groove thing. Cool logo too!!! He also just finished up producing an album for Doc Lewis called Between The Lovin’ and The Leavin’ that drops 6/26 with the single In El Paso burning up the Texas charts as we speak. Give it a listen. The advance album is #1 here at the mansion, you guys are gonna love it!!!
Here in local land, the Rangers released our anthem, The Great Midwest, and will be taking that song to headline a show at Michigan International Speedway before the NASCAR Firekeepers Casino 400. Meg and The Wheelers quietly put out their debut album, Honky Tonk Wisdom, and had a packed release show with Dave and The Quinnpies opening. He was telling me he’d been mulling over the name change for awhile and just wanted to shake things up…. we’re kidding of course. He’s in Nashville recording now. I know you all probably think Honky Tonk Wisdom is #2 here, but it’s actually behind Ella at #3. Both records are A+ in my book.
As was said by someone a few days ago, Joe Stamm and his boys were back in the studio, and of course if you’d like to help chip in in any way, feel free to hit him up and offer just about anything from cash to gas money, canned goods, even a pack of Boro Lights for Mr. Glover is welcomed!!! I’m teasing you Joe, we’re looking forward to the album. Andrew Sa is releasing his Bloodshot Records debut on the 26th, his 3 songs are in heavy rotation here. Last but not least we’ve welcomed Alice Wallace, who moved here to Chicago from Nashville, then got her car and headed out to the West Coast for shows. Upon returning, she’ll be giving yodeling lessons at The Old Town School of Folk Music, which is very cool!!! You all don’t have to listen to or like what I like, but you all know, if I like it……. it must be good!!!

That’s a lot of wind from the Windy City there JB-C! Retirement has freed up time for you to get out in front of some great stuff. “In El Paso” is a helluva Texas Country sad bastard song with some exquisite fiddle and steel playing. Meg and the Wheelers album has some rippers with great guitar pickin’. I’m guessing you’re most partial to “Back in Chicago”? That thing is a runaway train just barely staying on the tracks!
Need more frequent playlist updates Trigger so I can digest JB-C’s updates from the trailer park in smaller bites!

The kimmi song reminds me of a song Roy Orbison might have sung for some reason, great song

Was blasting Coleman Jennings (ATOY for me, next to JRW) on repeat, thinking, “man, this guy has the voice of an angel;” my wife walks in and says “would you please turn this off? It’s absolutely terrible.” Not for everyone 😉

I’ll have a review of the Coleman Jennings album soon. It’s a very hard one to analyze, because either you’re going to love it, or hate it.

You know the Walker Montgomery song is just a re-recording of the James Bonamy hit from the mid-90s, right? Nothing special at all.

Need some Ben Chapman

An enjoyable listen as always. Drayton Farley’s album remains one of my favourites this year. I like the Waler Montgomery track. Definitely an 80s, 90s feel to it in a good way. Sam Platts is a new name to me and one of my stand out tracks this time. Kaitlin Butts…..really good, again
