Newest Additions to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#47)
When we look back at the first week of August 2019, we might count it as a week for the ages in country music. Not only did we have Tyler Childers drop a new landmark album in Country Squire, Mike and the Moonpies came out of left field dropping a surprise landmark album of their own. The title track from the new Tyler Childers record, and “If You Want a Fool Around” from the Moonpies’ Cheap Silver and Solid Country Gold lead the latest additions to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Playlist, which is intended to keep you up-to-date with the biggest releases in country music, right here, right now.
We’ve also had a bunch of new announcements for highly-anticipated records recently, also helping to feed the playlist. This includes the song “Willie Nelson’s Wall” from up-and-coming Texas traditionalist Vincent Neil Emerson—the first song from his record Fried Chicken & Evil Women out September 13th. Chris Knight also just dropped a new song on us from his first album in 7 years. Called “I’m William Callahan,” it is the first taste from his record Almost Daylight October 11th. Charley Crockett has a new album on the way too. Called The Valley, the title track makes it on the playlist.
And the new songs from highly-anticipated albums keep coming. Well-respected songwriter Kendell Marvel has an new album called Solid Gold Sounds also out October 11th, and the lead single “Hard Time with The Truth” makes the list. And last but not least, Billy Strings and his song “Taking Water” have been added to the playlist. His new album HOME will be out September 27th.

Many of these songs are on my lists, as well. My August new music list is currently at 61 artists ( just 4 days fresh !), though only a percentage of these would find favor with country purists. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkY8-UOMZQ08us-o88qKzw1LmH8Xsuf8q

A fine list!
Hope Lyndsay Butler will release new songs soon. The Cliff Cody album will be out in a couple of days.
Monica Rizzio & Karine Polwart…great find.
Karine Polwart is covering “Dignity” on her new album (Karine Polwart’s Scottish Songbook). One of the best pop songs by one of the best (underrated) pop bands (Deacon Blue – “Real Gone Kid”, “Wages Day” & my personal favourite “Love & Regret”).

Thank you so much ! I often find songs to add to my list from your posts. I saw Lyndsay Butler in March for a three hour show & really enjoyed that. I like Cliff Cody a lot, too. His “Guardian Angel” is on my July new music list, which features 200 artists. I have a song from Karine Polwart’s “The Lost Words: Spirit Songs” on an Odds & Ends list.
Here are the albums I know of so far for the rest of August: (5th)Tennessee Twin, (8th) Jeff Lane,(9th) Cliff Cody, Pauline Reese, Maybe April, Olivia Lane, Chris and Adam Carroll, Jesse Dayton ,Che Apalache,The HawtThorns, Beth Bombara, Jeremie Albino, Spirit Family Reunion, Smooth Hound Smith, Flagship Romance, Sam Lee Grona (15th) Rodney Crowell, (16th)Tracy Lawrence, Old Salt Union, Eilen Jewell, The Hickoids, Lillie Mae, Clint Black, Brent Bass and Melted Plectrum, Tex Smith,Dylan Scott, Ben Davis Jr. and The Revelry, Frank Turner, Seth James, Amy Lavere, (23rd) Po’ Ramblin’ Boys,Vince Gill, Midland, Dalton Domino, Michael Cleveland, Kevin Fowler, Esther Rose, Tanya Tucker,Ottoman Turks,Leslie Stevens, Jason Hawk Harris, Croy and The Boys, Them Coulee Boys, Ty Herndon, 40 Acre Mule (30th) Ward Hayden and The Outliers, Jedd Hughes, Trisha Yearwood, Sheryl Crow, Burnett, Martin Simpson, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Season Ammons, and Garrett T. Hey man, you heard Chevys and Fords by Billy Ray Cyrus yet? It has a bit of a red dirt feel to it in my opinion. Much better than anything on his most recent album.
August 4, 2019 @ 6:10 pm
Yes I have. Probably not appropriate for the playlist, but I may review it at some point.
August 4, 2019 @ 9:04 pm
Definitely not good enough for the playlist, but I genuinely enjoyed it. It had a few snap tracks, but halfway through the song they stopped and it sounds so much better. I dont know what it is about the song but its nostalgic and is just kind of feel good.

I love this site and have frequented it for several years, as you can probably tell by my email/name. I am curious though, why the radio silence on Midland?
I always figure they would be someone you love, releasing real stuff to radio and all.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I haven’t seen anything added to playlists, reviewed, or even mentioned. I would have thought that between Mr Lonely, Put The Hurt On Me, Playboys, or now their new song, they would’ve gotten some love.
I’m not a Midland homer. I actually didn’t like them at first based on the stuff from this site, but I have come around and think it’s weird that they aren’t covered here.
Still stuck on the old drama ???
August 5, 2019 @ 12:53 am
Bigdog,
I’m trying to move on from the old drama. That’s why I don’t want to write an article every time they drop a song. When the Midland album is released, I’m sure I’ll be covering it. In the meantime, I’m not going to put them on a playlist like this over an independent artist who could use the attention more, or a mainstream single that needs the support more. Midland is doing fine.

Okay, thanks

I had never heard of this artist, Duane Cliatt, before this apparently new song by him showed up in my Facebook feed yesterday. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br0HRQmQx8g]
But I did something I don’t often do when that happens. I listened to it and liked his Facebook page, then went to the iTunes Store and bought all four of his songs that were offered there.
His songwriting, voice and musical talent reallty impressed me, and I wondered if you had heard him, Trigger. I would really like to hear what you think of his voice and music, if you have time.
August 5, 2019 @ 12:47 am
I’ll check him out Joni, thanks for the suggestion.
August 5, 2019 @ 4:42 pm
Thank you, Trigger.

Gethen Jenkin’s ‘Western Gold’ is a kick ass album start to finish – he reminds me some of Whitey Morgan and the 78’s and a bit of Cody Jinks, The new Tyler is amazing as well. Solid list as always.- also just found out about a great various artist series on Trailer Park records called ‘Twisted Tales From the Vinyl Wastelands’ , I think there are 15 volumes choc full of underground county and western from the 50s and 60s http://vinylwastelands.bigcartel.com/

Just heard Leslie Stevens for the first time (I’ve never heard of her before) and instantly yelled “DOLLY!” The thought gives me great joy.
Thanks for your years of hard work on this stuff, Trigger. Your feel for what country should sound like lines up great with mine. Before I found this blog, I thought nobody was making the good stuff anymore. Now I have more great country than I have hours to listen to it. Thank you!
August 5, 2019 @ 2:33 pm
Thanks for reading Matt.
August 7, 2019 @ 3:03 pm
Curious- anyone else listening to the Matt Carson release? Man I’m really loving that. Must hear: “you ask me to”& “No regrets”
August 7, 2019 @ 3:28 pm
Definitely been one of my “go to” records in 2019.
