Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#143)

You better like Country music with a ‘C’ because it’s coming at you hard and heavy in this playlist update. It includes tons of upbeat twang just in time for the heart of the summer, and just as country has never been hotter.
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
Newest Additions:
George Dearborne – “Misery Loves Country” – Dearborne might have released one of the best traditional country albums of 2024 so far with Lotta Honky Tonkin’ Left In Me, and this is one of the best songs of the lot. Super well-written by David Frasier, Edward Hill, and Josh Kear, it’s even more exquisitely delivered by Dearborne and the band.
Hogslop String Band w/ Sierra Ferrell – “Oldsmobile” – The Hogslop String Band is known for their wild and high energy live shows. But instead of trying to capture that madness in the studio (which would be impossible anyway), they really made a gem here, and then brought in Sierra Ferrell to take it even further. This might be the band’s best studio track yet.
Matt Castillo – “Pain and Sorrow” – If you’re looking for another young modern traditionalist to slip in your playlist beside Zach Top, Matt Castillo is the man that you need to be paying attention to. His new album Pushing Borders is excellent, and he also brings those little inflections of Hispanic flair that give his take on country a distinct flavor like the accordion in “Pain and Sorrow.” There is a reason this song is topping the Top 25 Playlist.
49 Winchester – “Hillbilly Happy” – The boys from Virginia get you extra amped up for August 2nd when their new album Leavin’ This Holler arrives with this fun country rock heater.
Ben Jerrell – “Tucumcari Tonight” – Ben Jerrell has a new surprise album out called A Country Song, and any road dog worth their salt has passed the “Tucumcari Tonight” signs out on Interstate 40/old Route 66. This trucker tune will definitely get your motor running.
Rachel Brooke – “The One Who Got Away” – Underground country legend Jayke Orvis once said of Rachel Brooke that she has so much pain in her voice. You can hear that in this track from the “Queen of Underground Country.” Brooke has been releasing a string of country hearbreakers ahead of a proper album release down the road, and this one might be the best so far.
Melissa Carper – “Let’s Get Outta Here” – Melissa Carper takes you all the way back to the 1940s on her new album Borned In Ya. The album is more about era than genre, but “Let’s Get Outta Here” has lots of sweet Golden Era country instrumentation to go along with Carper’s always clever writing.
Billy Strings – “Richard Petty” – Billy has been featuring this excellent a capella song with his band in concert for some time now. The release of his first live album Live Vol. 1 finally gives us a recorded version we can pull up and enjoy. Think Strings has gone all jam band on us? “Richard Petty” is here to disagree, and give you goosebumps along the way.
Johnny Blue Skies (Sturgill Simpson) – “Who I Am” – Sturgill is back, and though some of his detractors will say his new album Passage Du Desir is not country, “Who I Am” and a few other songs would beg to differ. For sure the album is more omnivorous than Simpson’s early albums, but this song shows Sturg can still deliver a stellar country song when he decides to.

Don’t miss out on Matt Castillo – Pain and Sorrow

49 Win have released an awful lot of singles ahead of the album and all have been good to great. Hillbilly Happy being my fave so far. Could be setting up as an AOTY nominee for them based on the quality out so far. If this site were called Saving All Music I’d have lobbied for “Jupiter’s Faerie” from old Johnny BS to make the playlist. That one has settled in as my favorite after over a week of listening to Passage darn near nonstop.

I think the new Reckless Kelly is worth a listen.

Most of the songs and artist deserve to be in the Top 25 but you have a few that have no business being in the Top 25. It seems as if this list is simply to help some artist for their efforts but not really their talent compared to other more talented artist, in particular, to name one that stands out is Matt Castillo which is nothing more than an average country singer that sounds the same as most other low level local artists. There are a number of great artists out there and it seems there is a push to make an average artists bigger than their talent such as voice range limitations. Just hope that we are promoting the artists based on their talents not just because they’re putting in a lot of effort. Which is fine and is needed but hace to have the talent to go along with it. Cody Johnson and Parker McCollum are very talented artists. Some of these artists such as Matt are no where close to their same talent level. Keep the good music coming but realistic with these artists expectations.

Thanks for the feedback.
So I’d have a few comments here.
First, this isn’t a playlist of artists, it’s a playlist of songs. Artists play those songs, but when compiling it, I’m not asking myself which artists I want to put on it, but which songs.
Second, this is made to be a place to feature songs being released right here, right now. Neither Parker McCollum nor Cody Johnson have new, original singles right now because they both released albums in 2023, for example. Both have been featured on this playlist before though.
Totally get if you don’t dig on Matt Castillo. I think the guy is great, and have been into his music for a while. But that’s the thing about taste, it’s subjective. And yes, he is a pretty small, under-the-radar artist, and yes, that’s part of the reason he’s being highlighted here. But if he doesn’t appeal to you, that’s totally cool. This playlist is to get people’s name out there, allow listeners to sample some new tunes, and perhaps find a song they like.
Thanks for listening.

I happen to really like the Castillo tune!

If you think Matt Castillo has an average voice, it makes me question your taste. Sounds like a young George Strait to me.

Trig, any chance of getting these playlists on Apple Music, too, in the future?
July 22, 2024 @ 6:42 am
It’s on Apple Music here:

For whatever reason, Apple doesn’t make the music searchable.

Jim Lauderdale’s new album has several solid tracks, as usual. Check out “I’m a Lucky Loser.”
