Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#144)
We’re rounding the corner on the summer, but the hits keep coming. The last month or two has seen some of the top album releases of the year, and many of them are represented in the latest additions to the playlist.
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
TIDAL USERS PLEASE NOTE: The playlist is currently no longer being updated on Tidal. Thanks to Derrick who kept it going for years, but he is no longer using the service. We’ll look to restart the playlist on Tidal as part of a future update.
Newest Additions:
Noeline Hoffman – “Purple Gas” – “Purple Gas” has been one of the landmark songs in Western music over the last two years thanks to video versions of it. Zach Bryan sure thought so, recording his own version with Noeline Hoffman. But we finally get a studio version of the song from Hoffman herself thanks to La Honda Records, and it’s probably the superior one.
Colby Acuff – “Plastic Horses” – Colby combines an upbeat tempo and a fun-sounding song with what’s ultimately a very sad story. This in itself is a smart use of songcraft, but Colby makes it even better by the things he doesn’t say as opposed to the things he does. It’s from Acuff’s new album American Son.
Charley Crockett – “Crystal Chandeliers and Burgundy” – As good as Charley Crockett’s original songs are, his nose for old obscure cuts and his interpretations of them might even be better. Written by Jack Routh and recorded by Johnny Cash, “Crystal Chandeliers and Burgundy” from Crockett’s recent record Visions of Dallas is a great example of Charley Crockett as a vessel for vintage songs.
The Red Clay Strays – “Devil In My Ear” – Quite a few folks will contend that the new Red Clay Strays album Made By These Moments is the best so far in 2024. “Devil In My Ear” is emblematic of the album’s exploration into temptation and self-doubt, and the avenues to overcoming it.
Karen Jonas – “Online Shopping” – You really have to listen to Karen’s new album The Rise and Fall of American Kitsch cohesively and linearly to really understand the genius of the work. All the songs are good and make something greater than the sum of their parts. Hopefully the humorous “Online Shopping” piques the interest of some to listen further.
The Saddle Sores – “I’m Over Bein’ Sober Over You” – This Austin honky tonk mainstay releases an excellent little honky tonk number with timeless writing and excellent instrumentation.
Zachariah Malachi – “Heartbreak” – One of country music’s excellent young traditionalists releases a song whose music is splendidly indicative of vintage Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, but the voice is all Zachariah’s.
Jeff Crosby – “Out in the Country” – Jeff Crosby’s new album Another Petal Falls Off The Rose is not one to be overlooked. This super tasty opening track will get you revved up for what to expect. Crosby’s writing on the album is excellent.

It’s been an insane month for incredible releases. I’m a little surprised you were able to control yourself Trigger and not expand the Top 25 to the Top 28 as you had to do a time or two previously. Lance Roark’s EP is so good and I’m finding myself enjoying Karen Jonas’ record more than I initially expected. A couple of other really good singles were released from my favorite ladies last week to check out if your playlists are needing some more representation from the female side – Sheyna Gee released “Young” (her voice is like Tanya Tucker’s after 2 extra packs of Marlboro Reds) with some great fiddle out front and tons of pedal steel; Jenna Paulette’s “Run the Damn Ball” may be the greatest song about football ever – ‘pass the green beans and run the damn ball’, brilliant. Lastly, my up-and-comer Texan – Grace Tyler – whom I predict will be huge the minute she drops her debut album released her best sad song yet “Dinner’s Getting Cold”.

Jenna Paulette has put out one great song after another this year.

I love Jenna Paulette! She’s put out lots of great music as of late, but I think my favorite of hers so far has got to either be “Hang Your Hat” or her Red Dirt Reimagining of “Slow Drawl”. Both sound straight out of the 90’s or early 2000’s.

She’s fantastic…Hard for me to pick a recent favorite, because it changes with each new release. “Run the Damn Ball” is a banger. I am stoked to hear the whole album…hurry up 9-6-24!!

Rope the Wind by Amanda Kate Ferris and Better be Tough by Ella Langley should be on everyone’s playlist.

Ella Langley is too country to make this list.
Unlike a lot of the cosplay country.
She is authentic. Perhaps, Cosmo Country.

She’s literally a pop-country artist outside of that one song. Which is has decent production compared to her other stuff atleast. She’s mediocre.

It’s all subjective.
She has a great voice.

Ella Langley is a straight off the Nashville Music Row boiler plate pop star with written-by-committee songs, full stop. I have seen her perform live. I have listened to the album in full. Are there a couple of good songs there? Sure, just like there are on the last Luke Bryan album. Otherwise she’s even outflanked on the country side by Megan Moroney.
The idea that Ella Langley is “too country” for this playlist compared to The Saddle Sores, let alone Noeline Hoffman and others, is a embarrassingly stupid notion to forward in a public forum.
It’s also a rip off of a stock CountryKnight comment.

Sweet. I’m being namedropped.
Only 1,000,000,000 more to go until I equal Waylon, Willie, Hank, and Cash in mentions!

No doubt Ella is country as cornbread – need proof watch her podcast with Tracy Lawrence. Her music is way better than run of the mill pop country, I’d say it leans more rock county which is my sweet spot. And yes, her voice is great. I’m a fan, but the album left me wanting more depth honestly. A couple too many songs about whiskey and bars and cowboys. I think Ella is only going to grow and she’ll write some great songs after she does some living – she’s young. With that said, my favorite on the album is “Girl Who Drank Wine.” Can’t wait to see her in a couple months on her headlining tour. Added bonus she is a flat out beauty with a Linda Ronstadt kinda smolder.

“Better Be Tough” it is a straight rip off of Roger Alan Wade’s “If You’re Gonna Be Dumb,” which isn’t some obscure cut, it is the theme song to all the Jackass movies.
If you like it, I respect that. But if I put it on this playlist or highlighted it in any way, it would literally just be a funnel for rebuke for Ella.

I think the single has been out for about a month but Hannah Juanita’s song Granny’s Cutlass Supreme is so fun. She has an album coming out soon. Got my hands on it and I’m very sad that I’m separated from my CD player right now. Also, don’t sleep on Mose Wilson who she’s been collaborating with for a while. He put out an album in 2021 that was pretty much perfect traditional country with very good original songwriting and I believe he’s got more stuff coming out. I just saw them playing a small duo show And it sounded like three or four people because both of them are just such great musicians. Don’t miss it if they come through your area.

Rhonda Vincent’s latest new album out with some pretty cool collaborations featuring Cody Johnson and Dolly, and Opry sisters Tricia Yearwood and Jeannie Seely. Called Destinations and Fun Places, all songs are centered on travel or locations.

It’s a stupid song that even many of his own fans don’t like because it’s so obsequious and transparent, and he had to recently cancel his European tour from lack of support.
CountryKnight
August 12, 2024 @ 8:42 am
Truth-wise, it beats anything from Isbell’s political oeuvre. Country music was built on straight and hard truths.
What a shame. Maybe NATO could sponsor his next tour. Europe will lap it up then!
As you have said before, the first rule of music is if someone likes it that’s what matters, not what a critic thinks.

@Trig–I figured you were exaggerating, so I went and Googled and listened to and watched that Brian Kelley song. To say that the song–and performance–suck would be like saying that the Grand Canyon is a good-size ditch.
The guy makes Aaron Lewis and Jason Aldean (“Am I the Only One”/”Small Town”) sound like Kristofferson.

I just listened to “Day of Decision” by Johnny Seay and Kelley’s song is an updated version.
It is a blunt and stark song.

Any review coming for Jamey Johnson’s new single?
Trigger
August 14, 2024 @ 7:17 am
I don’t review a lot of singles, didn’t really find it that exceptional or noteworthy aside from being “new” from Jamey Johnson. But there seems to be a ton of interest in it, so I will try to get a review up for it. Thanks for the interest.
