Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#147)
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
Newest Additions:
Teddy and the Rough Riders – “Fast Livin’” – One of east Nashville’s favorite duos and backing bands is back with a collection of their own original songs called Down Home. “Fast Livin'” is a full-tilt and twangy scorcher that tells you the kind of home cookin’ their stewing up east of the Cumberland River.
Taylor Hunnicutt – “Back to the Country” – Who can’t get into a song about getting away from the busy streets for a little R&R in the country, served up by the surging Southern rock goddess Taylor Hunnicutt and her signature soulful howl and snarl? “Back To The Country” is from her new EP With All Due Respect.
JP Harris – “To The Doves” – So well-written it will give you chills, this new song from the new JP Harris album JP Harris is a Trash Fire reminds you of the best of Kris Kristofferson, and poignantly was released right before Kristofferson’s recent passing.
Adam Chaffins – “Little Bit At A Time” – A sweet little funky country song that doesn’t short you on the writing, and hopefully it’s a sign of more to come from Chaffins. For those that don’t know, Adam is married to another cool country artist, Brit Taylor.
Tyler-James Kelly – “Travelin’ Troubadour” – Tyler-James Kelly is a name you’ll want to get on your radar ahead of the release of his debut album Dream River on November 15th. He makes it easy to warm up to him with the twangy travelin’ track “Travelin’ Troubadour” showcasing his earthen voice and ’70s-inspired sound.
The Franklin Country Trucking Company – “Bless My Soul” – The Franklin County Trucking Company is here to facilitate all of your interstate shipping needs, and keep the proud legacy of trucking songs and attitudinal alt-country alive. Find their new album The Death-Defying Adventures of the Franklin County Trucking Company in your grocer’s freezer.
Billy Strings – “My Alice” – We consider Billy Strings one of the most brilliant musicians of our era or any other, but he proves with “My Alice” that he’s no slouch of a songwriter either. It’s from his new surprisingly straightforward bluegrass album Highway Prayers.

Evidently this site hates that Whiskey Riff site but if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t have found out that Taylor Hunnicutt released an EP on Friday. Listening to it now and it’s just as good as the album. She’s like a female Whiskey Myers, which is pretty cool. The recommended song isn’t my favorite song on the EP but it’s still pretty good. I think Left Turn on a Red Light is slightly better.

For the record, this site does not “hate” Whiskey Riff. I strongly disagree with how they do many things over there, from the insane amount of ads to their recent political leanings, and I’ve been vocal about that. But I’ve always said how important they are, and how appreciative I am for how they have helped spread the word about important music. Your anecdote about Taylor Hunnicutt is a good example. But for the record, one of the major reasons I added Taylor Hunnicutt’s song to the playlist was to let folks know she had released a new EP. The EP also appeared on the latest release radar article. So if you’re in tune with these Saving Country Music tools built to keep you informed, you would know about it. And I don’t review a lot of EPs, but it might be featured further in the future.
There is SO MUCH music coming out at the moment. I cover a lot of stuff Whiskey Riff never would speak about, and vice versa. Neither of us can cover it all. We’re all just trying to do what we can to get ears where we think they belong.

Trigger,
Rereading my post, I did come off rude and I apologize for that. The only reason I brought up the Whiskey Riff stuff was because I’ve seen a lot of criticisms about them on this site over the last few months, and there is one great thing that they do, which is the weekly playlist. I follow that playlist and I follow yours and I have discovered a lot of great music from both. I know there is a lot coming out, and you do a great job (Even though I wish your playlist was also weekly, but that’s a minor thing) keeping us informed. I probably would have discovered Taylor’s new EP from this site first if I had seen the SCM first. I ended up seeing the WR playlist first and listened to the entire EP on my walk this morning.
Again, I apologize for the rudeness of my original post and thanks for the great songs every couple of weeks (As well as the music and album reviews). I hope this EP from Taylor leads to a new album, because Alabama Sound was one of my most surprising albums and new talent finds of the year (And it’s probably still in my top 10).

Hey Greg,
No worries at all. I didn’t take offense to your comment or anything. I just wanted to clarify my thoughts, which are involved and I probably don’t make easy to pin down. I think it’s really easy in this business for people to get involved in turf wars and fight over who is first, and who is best. But our jobs is to support the music, so the more people talking about Taylor Hunnicutt, the better, especially since she doesn’t really have a publicist or a label pushing her.
The reason I rarely do weekly release radars or playlists is because to be honest, most weeks there only a few things that come out that I really think are worthy of ears. But I am always looking for better ways to get people to connect to the music they’re looking for without inundating them with tons of info that’s hard to parse through. It’s a difficult balancing act.

Trigger has rightfully called out Whiskey Riff on some of the BS they push but I haven’t perceived any hate. They push content all day long and have multiple writers. They do a good job of getting out the word on new music but they don’t go into any real critical analysis of it like SCM does. Darn near every post about new music on that site starts with the words “(Insert Artist) just does NOT miss…”. Not exactly a deep dive, but yes Whiskey Riff is a great resource for real time release info. SCM and WR are two very different beasts. I’ve said before, Whiskey Riff can be like reading the comics in the newspaper, you can run through it pretty quickly and often there’s some good laughs. SCM is journalism.
Just saw Taylor play a few of the new ones at Peacemaker Fest this weekend as the reigning emerging artist of the festival. She is a force of nature. Killer high energy set.

Love the new BMFS album. This is the Billy I like.
Also, I dig the Dwight/Posty single.

I’ve been loving the entire Taylor Hunnicutt record; it was played several times over the weekend. Adam Chaffins track goes right into my playlist, as I met him when he was here last year with Brit Taylor, what a nice couple! Of course Whitey and Jamey Johnson’s songs are spun endlessly, can’t wait for JJ’s album.
On my local front, the first couple of Chicago Honky Tonk Wild Earp and Michelle Billingsley released a track called Cheap Checks to coincide with the little yearly shindig they hold, Honky Tonktoberfest. Wisconsin’s own Dan Lepien put out a toe tappin’ song/video last week, Country Proud, from his upcoming debut album. My favorite song at the moment is Just In Case and comes from the Dance Bullies current EP (featuring Jeff Lyman on pedal steel). This is what a hit single in Alt Country Land should sound like, folks. Listen to this, you’ll never stop playing it.
Let me veer off topic for a moment because I’ll assume you all know and love me…..lol Most on here don’t know, but Trigger does that once upon a time, many decades ago, I was the singer for a Metal band called Thrust. This week on my Facebook page we are celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the only album I ever recorded as a “singer” Fist Held High. I guess it’s become now what they call an “underground cult classic.” You’re welcome to have a laugh on me and go take a look at the video and poke around. I also posted the first review I ever wrote in 1982 for a concert I went to. What made my weekend was Trigger “liked” my post. Thanks Trig! Oh and I promise I will not be this long winded every time he puts up a playlist….LOL

Don’t make promises you can’t keep JB. Alright I’m gonna check this “underground cult classic” out for sure. And I feel like the Top 25 playlist updates are the most appropriate place for random thoughts type comments so here’s mine:
My currently-underground-soon-to-be-huge Texas girl, Grace Tyler, released yet another terrific single called “Weak Man.” And I say soon-to-be-huge because she’s now opening a few dates for Shane Smith and The Saints which is awesome.
I attended the Peacemaker Fest in Fort Smith, Arkansas this past weekend for the first time. If you are looking for the perfect, small, chill, single-stage fest this is for you. Bonus – you can bring a lawn chair. It was so well run and I’d say the vast majority of attendees were pushing 40+ in age. No drunks, no security issues, and run like a well-oiled machine. I am not the world’s biggest American Aquarium fan but imo they stole the festival with a one-hour set mid-day on Friday. Reckless played after them, then 49 Win and both had an impossible task of matching AA’s energy. BJ is hands-down one of the best frontmen I have ever seen. Tanner Usrey played a killer set, but the biggest surprise to me was Josh Meloy. His band was tight and Josh genuinely had a lot of fun yet is the most humble guy. He mentioned several times how thankful he was and sincerely could not believe he was playing an 8 pm slot. As far as pure connection with the crowd, that award goes to Josh.

I’ve always liked some Country, Americana, and Southern Rock my whole life; I just never really embraced the genre full on until about 9 or 10 yrs ago because Metal and Rock became stale, old, and contrived to me, and Country and all the independent stuff was fresh and new to my ears.

I’m trying to write a song about letting go but where letting go means losing connections to songs that are meaningful because of the thing/person you’re letting go of…it’s kinda a death loop…so I’ll just repeat that Heather Myles was amazing a really long time, too bad this website wasn’t around then.
