Newest Adds to Saving Country Music’s Top 25 Current Playlist (#163)

Don’t ever find yourself taking for granted that we live in such a fruitful, resurgent time for true country music. It’s a bumper crop of incredible songs coming out each week. This is where you can find the cream of the crop.
The Saving Country Music Top 25 Playlist is built to keep you informed on all the best songs and albums coming out right here, right now in country and roots music. It’s available on most all streaming formats (see below), or you can just use the song, artist, and album recommendations to find something new to listen to. New songs just added.
Newest Additions:
Brennen Leigh – “Dumpster Diving” – This song mixes Brennen’s classic humor with her cutting insight, saying more in a minute forty than many blathering and aimless tracks do in four minutes, though it does leave you wanting more. Don’t worry though, there’s 11 more tracks due out October 3rd on new album Don’t You Ever Give Up On Love.
Will Banister, Jake Worthington – “Honky Tonk Talkin’” – Will Banister is one of the best living traditional country voices out there right now, and he joins up with one of the fastest-rising traditional country voices in Jake Worthington for this Outlaw country half-time heater. This song was co-written by Will with Zach Top and Zach’s producer Carson Chamberlain.
Waylon Jennings – “The Cowboy (Small Town Texas)” – Though written by fellow country legend Johnny Rodriguez, this is the perfect composition for Waylon, singing about humble beginnings in small town Texas (In Waylon’s case, Littlefield), along with referencing the “hippies and cowboys” scene that Waymore stumbled upon in Austin, TX. It accompanies other new, unheard songs from Waylon on the album Songbird out October 3rd.
Spencer Hatcher – “When She Calls Me Cowboy” – Spencer Hatcher is one of the most promising up-and-coming voices in traditional country music, and this new song underscores why. It’s also why it was such a tragedy to hear that his mother was killed, and father injured in a home invasion earlier this month. We continue to pray for this young man’s family, while supporting him as part of our country music family.
Jared Dustin Griffin – “Bag of Bones” – It’s the gravely voice that initially piques your ear. But it’s the lyrics and the hook that keep you listening. Accompanied by vocalist Heather Little on the track, “Bag of Bones” is from Griffin’s upcoming album The Perseverance of Sisyphus out September 26th.
Tyler Hatley, Justin Clyde Williams – “Linda James (Live)” – These two North Carolina songwriters have a new collaborative, live/recorded hybrid album all called The Dick & Tammy Show that’s quite entertaining. And though there are a bunch of great original songs written by the two, it’s their rendition of this Nicholas Jamerson song that it feels like the world needs to hear, especially how the two harmonize at the end.
Joshua Hedley – “Fresh Hot Biscuits” – Hedley has us all losing our heads in anticipation of his new Western Swing album All Hat due out on October 24th. “Fresh Hot Biscuits” definitely evokes the era, and hopefully will reignite interest in this important country subgenre.
Charley Crockett – “Tennessee Quick Cash” – This is perhaps the best on Charley Crockett’s new album Dollar A Day. Though the direct reference is to pawnbrokers, the allusion is to to the record labels in Nashville and their predatory ways. Sure, you can pawn your future with a major label and walk away with some jingle in your pocket. But they may own your ass indefinitely afterwards. This song could become a Charley Crockett all-timer.

The rotation is ever evolving here at the townhouse as we see Sunny Sweeney sliding into the morning drive alongside Hailey Whitters. I know I’m a little late on the Chasen Wayne album, but now I’m lovin’ it! It was definitely a grower. Jesse Daniel, Joe Stamm, and Craig Gerdes are all still getting spun, and of course Dan Lepien remains in the top spot. My surprising secret little guilty pleasure has been Lauren Mascitti’s summer fun in the sun EP Out of the Blue. Smooth as silk!!!
I like the Spencer Hatcher tune, Banister/Worthington, and the Kyle Gates song too Trig. Anna Westcoat’s new song Cowboy from her upcoming EP is a must listen to. A+ I know a couple of you were talking about Lauren Watkin’s Marlboro Man last week, a song I absolutely love btw but I just can’t see a radio station touching it, but we can, and so can you Trig!! …LOL
Finally, I’d like to take this chance to give a shout out to my friends at the world famous Law Office Pub in Yorkville, who have a slew of great shows of our favorites coming up. Kimmi Bitter, Ty Smith, Gabe Lee, and The Rangers co headlining with Dan Lepien, and of course Ben Jarrell with Nick Sizemore in October as well as a bunch of others. Get over there and support one of the most important independent music venues in the Midwest, they do such an incredible job for the scene that everyone wants to play there. Now we just need more folks to go there!!! I’m only 1 guy, and I’m gettin’ old ….lol

Chasen Wayne definitely got a lot of spins from me. His previous album was really good, too- I’m guessing this is what people mean by cosmic country?
The two recent releases that completely blew my mind are some songs off of Rebecca Porter’s full length album that just came out last week, and Ameripolitan Outlaw Female 2024 nominee Stefanie Joyce’s new song Steeple. Holy shit what a banger. I really hope this means a new album sometime.
She has some really good stuff on her EP from a couple of years ago. Looks like she’s been doing a tiktok series for a little bit too. If you like stuff like Ashley McBride’s Martha Divine you will really love Stefanie Joyce
I also went really far down rabbit hole of Willi Carlisle’s stuff and the gothic Americana of Bandit Queen Of Sorrows, who is one of those hobo folk kids with a really phenomenal voice and absolutely amazing songwriting.

Wait, what JB-C? When is our man Ty playing up there? I couldn’t find anything on his website nor The Law Office’s. With Duke’s going down in a few months making the trip up may be the only way for me to catch him. Both of his recent singles lean more into the country side of his Red Dirt sound with prominent fiddle.

He’s playing on the 6th Rich. Pretty sure it’s an acoustic/songwriter thing.

Thanks my friend. I’ll be at Unbroken Circle Fest so please get some video to your FB page. I see Gabe is playing with King Margo. That is a killer show. One of the girls is a fantastic lap steel player and they compliment Gabe perfectly. Definitely get to that one if you can.

I love Tami Neilson’s Foolish Heart song. There are just so many great songs out, it’s really hard to listen to them all in one setting. It will take several rounds for me to get to them all. But it will be worth my time.

Saw a Silverada video online just a few minutes ago and I’m a little worried about Mike to be honest. Gave strong Evan Felker at that fundraiser vibes.

Town Mountain announced their breakup last week (last show in PA early November). I was always wondered who would break up first … Town Mountain or the band formerly known as Mike and the Moonpies.
I too have been loving the Chasen Wayne album a lot.

Brennen Leigh deserves all the attention she can get.
In a just world, she would be a household name, along with former duet partner Jesse Dayton.

You got that right. Hard to believe we’re living in a moment when Brennen Leigh and Sierra Ferrell, both extraordinary talents but otherwise not much alike, are around and at the peak of their powers.
I suppose it’s possible we’re just dreaming this.
