On Jason Aldean’s Controversial “Try That In A Small Town”

For going on six years now, I have been warning all the elitist think piece writers, academics, Twitter intellectuals, and even some artist who’ve been imploring country music artists to speak out politically—and even implying or outright saying that their silence was complicit to violence and was placing blood on their hands—to be careful what they wish for or they just might get it.
Now they have, and it’s not just in the form of some posts on someone’s wife’s Instagram account, or a washed-up artist’s album cut. It’s in the form of a country song that is headed straight to #1. And as these same supposed opinion makers now hubristically attempt to stifle the trajectory of this song with their hand-wringing and hyperbole in a manner that will only fuel its ascent since they learned absolutely nothing from the Morgan Wallen ‘N’-word situation, their vehemence will assure this song’s unequivocal success as opposed to impinge upon it, as their protests become even more unhinged and detached from reality while they descend into narcissistic rage.
Anyone who wrote a think piece about how country music is fertile ground for gaining leverage against the political right in the United States, you should get a co-write for Jason Aldean’s “Try That In A Small Town” because you’re complicit in it. Jason Aldean famously said to Rolling Stone in 2016 that he didn’t want to get political with his music or message. It was too polarizing, and it wasn’t his place. He called it a “no win.”
But after the incessant attacks on his wife for asserting her 1st Amendment rights on social media, and the demand that all musicians bend a knee to an organization that has now been verified to have bilked the American public, Jason Aldean is fed up, and finally speaking out politically. Or actually, Kelley Lovelace, Kurt Allison, Neil Thrasher, and Tully Kennedy are speaking out since they wrote the song. Jason Aldean rarely writes anything. He’s just the messenger.
But don’t take the conveying to these empirical truths as a ringing endorsement of Jason Aldean, this song, or the messages it conveys. On the contrary. Just as misguided as the naysayers of this song are, some otherwise rational traditional country music fans who would otherwise shun Jason Aldean and have been doing so for years are now rushing to support him and this song simply because of its message and the fact that some are trying to cancel it, similar to what they did for Morgan Wallen and his derivative Southern pop.
“Try That In A Small Town” isn’t even a country song to begin with, similar to how Jason Aldean is barely a country artist. He’s an arena rocker, and “Try That In A Small Town” is an arena rock song sent further into conflict with the tenets of country music by an electronic clap track intro and outtro. Any self-respecting actual country music fan caught dead enjoying or defending this song is just as misguided as the journalists who thought getting country artists to speak out politically would be helpful in furthering their ideology.
Granted, “Try That In A Small Town” gets the blood pumping and comes across powerfully to those it appeals to, and that’s why it showed immediate resonance when released two months ago. That’s right, this song isn’t anything new, though the controversy is, undercutting the arguments of some that are trying to mischaracterize the song’s lyrics when they were mum for the 60 days previous. The renewed scrutiny is in part because of the video that was just released for the song, which replays footage from Black Lives Matter riots, and was shot at the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee.
The Maury County Courthouse is where a lynch mob strung up and murdered an 18-year-old Black man named Henry Choate on November 13, 1927 after he allegedly attacked a White girl. This has caused some to call “Try That In A Small Town” a “pro-lynching” song. Though the shooting of the video in a place where a lynching once occurred is unfortunate—and the video producers should have vetted the site more cautiously—the idea that Aldean or the video team purposely chose that site because of the Henry Choate lynching is completely and utterly ludicrous.
This is a common occurrence in the emotional and irrational domain of politics. People give their adversaries credit for being manically calculating and brilliantly conspiratorial, while at the same time criticizing them for being so stupid, it’s astounding they can even perform involuntarily bodily functions. It has to be one or the other, and in this case, it’s because Jason Aldean and his minions are morons who didn’t do their homework on the location for the video shoot as opposed to maniacal full-blooded racists who were looking to send a deeper message beyond the ones already in the song and video.
The Maury County Courthouse is in Columbia, Tennessee, which is a short drive from Nashville. It simply made for a convenient location, and any rational person will conclude this. Asserting otherwise only exacerbates some of the motivations behind a song and video like this that the American public is being railroaded and lied to by the intellectual/media class. Because often, they are.
It’s similar to the time Margo Price called out Luke Combs from making a white power symbol on SNL, as if Combs was stupid enough to think he could get away with such a move on national television. There are many fair criticisms to give to Jason Aldean, “Try That In A Small Town,” and the video. Resorting to maximilized shock value hyperbole undercuts those opinions instead of strengthening them.
But again, don’t allow me to come across as a defender of this song. Beyond the sonic concerns, the premise of this song is off as well. Jason Aldean’s career has been marked by songs about small towns, often portraying them as idyllic. This is Aldean’s bread and butter, and “Try That In A Small Town” very much fits into that Jason Aldean song universe.
But the idea that there is no crime in small town America, that there isn’t random violence, or even anti-American sentiment is just pure fantasy. Many of America’s small towns are in crisis, similar to the intercity, not to mention sometimes being scary or outright dangerous for certain people to be in or travel through. Jason Aldean succumbs to the “othering” of America in “Try That In a Small Town” by acting as if everything just operated like it does in rural locales, the world would immediately be better.
In actual small town America, the opioid/fentanyl epidemic is rampant. It’s epicentered in rural Appalachia. Unemployment is higher than it is in many urban areas, exacerbating issues like drug use and property crime. Food deserts persist and are growing. The politics of small town America are often corrupt and underserve the public. That was the whole premise of The Dukes of Hazzard.
Are there Black Lives Matter protests in small towns? No, there are not. But at this point, there aren’t Black Lives Matter protests anywhere. This song and video feel dated and untimely, trite, unnecessarily strident in a way that impinges upon the message trying to be conveyed, and it is a strain on the truth.
Nothing is solved, or even addressed through a song and video like this. It just stirs the culture war pot, which distracts us all from the underlying issues that affect all of us outside of elitist circles. Whether you’re a White guy living in a small town dying from the abandonment of industry and the prevalence of pills, or a Black woman fighting for survival in the intercity where crime is everywhere, your problems are often more similar than different.
Country music is more conservative now than it was when academia and the media decided to target the genre after the election of Trump, believing the way to enact a blue wave among the electorate was to seed politically-motivated “journalists” into the industry to larp as country fans. Meanwhile, real country fans goes about their business, not reading any media, since it has become so untrusted and politically motivated.
Activists would have been much better served leaving mainstream country music alone to continue to release pallid, soft, unimaginative, inoffensive, and apolitical songs to a passive listening audience, which was the modus operendi ever since Toby Keith lost his relevance over a decade ago for his politically polarizing songs.
Instead, the media and academia disrespected country artists and their fans with their down-looking, arrogant ideas that they could mold their minds through the country art form. Now it’s officially backfired. But they will continue to mislead themselves into believing that their think pieces behind paywalls will eventually lead to Jason Aldean fans immediately vacating their political ideas. There was just another one of these articles published in The New Yorker earlier this week. “Try That In a Small Town” has and will spurn many more of these articles.
And when these activists finally conclude they will be unable to use country music to do their political bidding, they will actively work to destroy it. Meanwhile, what is injured is country music’s ability to be a space where people can come together and commiserate over a broken heart, or a broken home, and heal. It’s unfortunate, and both sides of the political divide/culture war are to blame.
It’s not that political subjects should be entirely extricated from the musical realm, or even from country music specifically. But as “Try That In a Small Town” proves, overt political songs that forgo allegorical messaging or nuanced storytelling for terse grandstanding often do more to divide and breed hatred as opposed to pragmatically addressing societal ills suffered universally by underserved people of all stripes.
It’s bluster.

He should try golfing in a small town. The courses are usually only 9 holes and not too challenging.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:39 am
He’s a fake tough guy who can’t break 100 on a golf course, handle a summer day in New England, and or write a song about country values without the help of 5 songwriters, an electronic drum beat and the threat of a parking lot fight if you dare disagree.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:54 am
Trigger sounds like the antisemites Sartre spoke of when he said (to paraphrase, “Never believe that [racistst] are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The [racists] have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”
July 19, 2023 @ 1:28 pm
Sartre was an avowed Marxist who believed violence undertaken for the sake of revenge was just—and not only just, but therapeutic. This is straight-up evil.
Trigger called Aldean a moron, which sounds about right.
Settle down and take your garbage elsewhere.
July 19, 2023 @ 4:24 pm
Sartre sure takes a long time to get to the point, doesn’t he? Too bad he didn’t have a handy colloquialism like “I got trolled” to say instead of describing exactly that.
July 20, 2023 @ 1:16 pm
Arthur, your assertion without any basis, that a song is racist is what Sartre would call “bad faith.” You’re assumption that to oppose the violence, criminality, and rioting that has been licensed by cynical politicians in large cities is to condemn one particular race is itself implicitly racist.
Therefore, your long Sartre quote was all about you. Good job.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:53 pm
“Try golfing in a small town” – That is a funny comment. Also if you are going to have a pedal steel in your song and video, at least make it sound like it.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:46 am
I may as well just copy and paste the first line of my comment on the golfing story (which I made before I was aware of this song and video) – I don’t think he’s ever been accused of being the sharpest tool.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:48 am
I heard Aldean is gonna sign with Jay-z and Ice T so he can learn what dangerous lyrics really are…
July 19, 2023 @ 7:49 am
The song is complete garbage but its not about lynchings its just pandering to rightwing listeners . I just think its funny how people on the right will put aside politics for artists like Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson, but people on the left who don’t even listen to country music lose their mind whenever a country artist makes a song like this.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:00 am
Must have forgotten about the Chicks speaking out against Bush…
July 19, 2023 @ 8:04 am
That was 20 years ago
July 19, 2023 @ 8:37 am
Is that why you forgot about it?
July 19, 2023 @ 9:17 am
Im not defending what happened to the dixie chicks that was complete bullshit but it was 2 decades ago and the political climate of today is not how it was then.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:20 am
It is not. But acting like it is somehow a new thing isn’t helping either.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:51 am
Yes…Bush 43… Our greatest president who favorite got us into a 20-year $8 trillion war.
Natalie is owed an apology from county radio
July 21, 2023 @ 12:36 am
DIxie Chicks*
July 19, 2023 @ 8:14 am
It’s because Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson are actually good (although I don’t possibly see how those on the right wouldn’t have a lot cognitive dissonance with them), and Jason Aldean is crappy. I can easily listen to, read, or watch things I don’t agree with if they are high quality and it’s hard to if it’s low quality and I agree with its message or creator.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:32 pm
She isn’t owed an apology. She’s a trash human being who voiced her opinion on President Bush and got mad when country music fans responded. She’s a garbage elitist who thinks free speech is a one-way street. Instead of doubling-down, she should have respected the opinion of her audience. Calling your fans names is not a good way to keep them. She deserved what she got.
July 19, 2023 @ 6:38 pm
She was also right. It’s painfully obvious to anyone with a critical brain cell. So, good on her to stand up for herself- hell or high water.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:50 pm
No, she was wrong. She acted as if she can say anything she wants and not be questioned. Her own fans said they didn’t like her using her platform to badmouth the president. She responded by badmouthing her fans. She has that right but it was stupid. And you think country music and Dixie Chicks fans are under an obligation to keep buying their music after that? No. That would be stupid. It wasn’t a boycott, it wasn’t cancel culture. It was people choosing to spend their money elsewhere.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:29 pm
Natalie Maines is an elitist? You obviously don’t even know the definition.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:42 pm
In the way the word elitist is used today, yes, she is an elitist snob. She thinks freedom of speech is a one-way street: she can say whatever she wants, but don’t you dare question her. This is exactly what happened and why fans walked away.
July 20, 2023 @ 4:01 am
Lol. She was RIGHT with her initial comments and history has proven that. All the blowback was ignorant, knee jerk patriotism.
July 20, 2023 @ 5:44 pm
The funniest part is that Joe is definitely a Trumpette who tithes half his paycheck to legal fees…to when that man has trashed Dubya and the Invasion far more aggressively than Maines ever did.
July 21, 2023 @ 12:02 am
Always funny when people cry about “free speech.” The first amendment has nothing to do with saying stupid shit and being “cancelled.” That’s a legal constitutional issue. Nobody in the Chicks or Aldean mess is facing legal repercussions over stupid shit they’ve said. I guess when you’re pretending to live in a small town you also can’t learn basic high school level civics.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:35 am
Multiple people in these comment threads have made clear they refuse to listen to Isbell specifically because of his politics. Don’t be obtuse.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:15 am
Don’t kid yourself as to what the song is about: it’s absolutely a pro-lynching. And Aldean is nothing but a cowardly wannabe. He’s a hack. A tool.
As I said on the other article, Aldean will talk all kinds of shit and say “oh, yeah, try that in a small town, try that on me.” He’s the kind that will tell you that “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” But when the shots rang out at Route 91, did he become the good guy with the gun and go into the crowd to stop it? Nope, he ran, just as frightened as everyone else was. He’s not a tough guy. He’s a hypocrite.
And then, he had the fucking all to use Route 91 as his defense for the song.
Aldean didn’t even write this song and he’s not even from a small town. He’s from Macon, a city with a population of over 150,000. Add that to the list of things where Aldean is all talk.
I don’t want Aldean to shut up because he’s a conservative: I want him to shut up because he’s a hypocritical blowhard who is capitalizing on gun violence and releasing a song that is nothing but a dog-whistle.
You want good songs from someone with a conservative viewpoint: listen to Chris Knight.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:40 am
You really think he’s pro-hanging black people from trees? Because that’s what lunching is.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:41 am
LYNCHING, not lunching. I must be hungry.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:08 am
lynching – to put to death (as by hanging) by mob action without legal approval or permission.
sort of exactly the sort of small town mob street justice he is singing about, no?
Well, try that in a small town
See how far ya make it down the road
Around here, we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won’t take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don’t
Try that in a small town
July 19, 2023 @ 9:46 am
I think this song and its accompanying video makes it quite clear what Aldean believes in.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:10 am
I haven’t watched or listened. Surely there are bodies hanging from branches by their necks if you’re so adamant about this.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:21 pm
You’re listening and watching it from a biased perspective if you think it’s clearly about lynching. It does promote violence, but from Aldean’s perspective, it’s promoting violence against people who are disruptive to society/criminals.
July 20, 2023 @ 5:34 pm
…
…
…
Travis.
…
…
…
What do you think the word “lynching” actually means?
July 21, 2023 @ 6:14 am
CLS… lynching refers to killing for an alleged offense. I don’t believe Aldean is promoting murder. Maybe you interpret it that way but I find that ridiculous, as does Aldean himself.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:15 pm
i hear golf courses are good places to get lunch.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:10 am
You are a fucking moron if you think the song is racist.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:13 am
You’re a fucking moron if you think it isn’t racist.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:23 am
Just a warning folks, if this comments section descends into back and forths like this, it’s going to get shut down. Let’s instead try to make salient points and share perspectives in a way that will be at least somewhat productive.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:27 am
And there it is! Just as thegentile has noted in the past: threaten to cut off the comments when people call out racism, not when the racism itself comes out. Bravo, Kyle. Exactly as predicted.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:31 am
The consistency is whenever comments devolve into simple name calling back and forth like what happened here. I don’t care who it is that does it. Either we can keep this comments section open, or we can’t. Criticizing me for being uneven in moderation is more reason to close it down for everyone.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:41 am
I’m sure you believe that’s the consistency, Kyle.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:02 pm
I wonder why Trigger always replies to people calling out bigotry instead of the comment above that started with the name calling.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:05 pm
we may never know!
July 19, 2023 @ 2:41 pm
Interesting how Trigger always calls out and responds to the comment RESPONDING to the original racist nonsense, not the original racist comment.
I smell some double sided two faced bullshit here
July 19, 2023 @ 3:27 pm
There has been ONE comment deleted in the 230 posted so far, and it was from RD. I don’t know why folks are complaining that I am moderating comments unfairly for folks on the left. All I said is that I don’t want to see senseless back and forths of “You’re and idiot!” “No, you’re an idiot!” It junks up the comments section.
Also, just because I respond to someone’s comment doesn’t mean I am disrespecting them. We’re engaging in discussion, and by acknowledging their comments, and giving them a platform to disagree with me, I am allowing dissenting viewpoints to be shared. I believe in, welcome, and encourage opposing viewpoints to my own here. But that doesn’t mean I won’t chime in, and give my opinion too.
If a comment is trite and indolent, I often don’t see the need to respond.
July 19, 2023 @ 4:47 pm
The issue Trigger (and it’s a continual issue with you), is that your response was sent to the person defending themselves, not the original commenter…
The original commenter who is obviously left wing …
July 20, 2023 @ 2:41 am
I thought that the comments simply go in order. Maybe he was taking a pee when the second to last one commented and it just so happened that his reply fell in that order. Everything doesn’t have to be about an agenda
July 20, 2023 @ 7:27 pm
Does the song itself ever mention a certain race? If the answer is no, it can’t be racist. If you assume that black people are the only ones doing the things in the song, you’re a racist.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:48 am
You really expected Jason aldean to jump off stage with a gun to stop the shooter? He and everyone else probably had no clue where the shots were coming from. If I remember correctly, he ran to his wife who was pregnant at the time (i think.) How jason aldean reacted in that horrible situation has nothing to do with being for or against the 2a. I’m not a Jason aldean fan, but give him a break when it comes to route 91.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:54 am
To hear Jason Aldean talk about it, that’s exactly what he would do, yeah.
Me? No, I wouldn’t expect ANYONE to do that, except the people we pay to do it: law enforcement officers and/or military.
I’m not the one though who encourages open carry and that if everyone had a gun that it would make everyone safer. That’s the mantra of the right-wing.
I made it quite clear by my comment that my issue with Aldean when it comes to Route 91 is his hypocrisy. It’s called reading comprehension. You might want to try it sometime.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:34 am
Compassion, grace, humility. Maybe give it a try.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:40 am
You know, Ryan, it’d be one thing if after the incident, Aldean had said something to the effect of “having witnessed it first hand, it’s not so easy for one to say they’d rush right in and stop it themselves.” But he didn’t. He keeps up his same bullshit.
So no, Aldean doesn’t get anything from me except my scorn.
July 20, 2023 @ 4:16 pm
His response is 100% per human nature and nothing to be criticized. His actions and support after is what the problem is. How can you still support one good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun argument, when that’s what happens when untrained people are shot at (and probably many trained people do as well)
July 19, 2023 @ 9:38 am
I’m probably further to the left than most country fans and other people commenting here. I personally have no problem listening to conservative artists. If the music is good, it’s good, no matter what the person’s political beliefs are. I’m not going stop listening to music I grew up on just because of who voted for who. I just don’t have the energy to track every person’s political views and base my listening habits on that.
At least for me, there’s a world of difference between just conservative music and loud dog whistling right wing pandering music. I can deal with and enjoy stuff like Toby Keith’s post 9/11 output and people like Travis Tritt. That to me isn’t the same as this. This is just pandering to the lowest amongst us and their grievances and packaging it in loud dated talking points. This is the latter.
I also find it hypocritical that the same people (nobody here, just in other places) hyping up this song and demanding Jason Aldean be “heard” are the same ones that say shut up and sing to the likes of Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Kacey, Sturgill, and Jason Isbell.
There’s also the fact that Aldean just sucks in general and doesn’t have anything of value to offer like other conservative artists do.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:18 pm
Toby’s “Beer For My Horses” actually had a more direct call to lynching than Jason’s song does. Toby (and Willie) put that out 20 years ago and it went to #1. I think it would have encountered a lot more resistance if came out today.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:37 pm
Good point Luckoldson, except that back then, folks knew it was just a song. I think the new Aldean song is dumb. But if we are going to start calling out every song that condones what someone sees as problematic behavior, the line forms to the left.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:41 pm
They hung all criminals then. Not just the black people.
July 20, 2023 @ 1:18 pm
Right on. I’m moderate, I’m not left or right, I’m pro-common sense and neither “side” has much of it when it comes to the zero-sum-game approach they take to certain topics. That said, compared to most true right-wingers, I’m probably crazy liberal. Yet I play/sing Angry American on stage from time to time, and I like good music, regardless. In Aldean’s case, the man SUCKS. He can’t live sing his way out of a wet paper bag, can’t write a song, and still parades that big head of his around acting like a tough guy. When he sent on SNL and did “Wont’ Back Down” I wanted to puke. When he stands on an asphalt road singing Dirt Road Anthem in the video, I cracked up and shook my head (same way I did when Thomas Rett says, “Don’t need no vacation, no fancy destination….” while on a yacht off the coast of Hawaii or somewhere. Who actually greenlights this trash?
July 20, 2023 @ 5:39 pm
I get made fun of here for how much I enjoy Toby Keith (unlike Aldean, or Wallen, he writes his own fucking songs!)
I like Angry American.
Fuck this trash, and fuck Aldean.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:25 am
Fans of country music are likely to be fans of Sturgill or Steve Earle or whoever else. I’m on the left and I own every album Hank Jr. has ever released and I paid money to see Charlie Daniels perform several times. I disagree with many of their political views, but there’s no denying their talent and their importance to the music we all love. I’m not a fan of Kid Rock or Aaron Lewis, but I won’t assume that everyone who is is a radical right-winger. After all, shitty music often manages to attract a sizable audience without politics.
I haven’t heard Aldean’s song and have no plans to. But I take no issue with it existing, any more than I take issue with any other non-country music being marketed as country.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:09 am
The recent album by Aaron is actually pretty good and most of it is apolitical. I think there is only the 1 song that would qualify as ‘pandering’.
July 20, 2023 @ 11:30 am
This song feels like it should have come out in like 2004.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:50 am
Jokes on fans of the video: Columbia isn’t a small town. It’s, as you said, convenient for the film crew. I’m sure everything he says is written by PR.
Aldean could have changed his messages after the Las Vegas shooting but he can’t upset the Nashville machine or his fan demographics.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:26 pm
“The Nashville Machine” is mostly run by leftist. ???? I’m surprised Aldean’s label even released it. Not because I think it’s racist or promoting violence, but because they must have known it would hurt feelings of the weaklings in the cancel culture and bring out the “everything is racist” people and virtue signallers.
July 20, 2023 @ 3:47 pm
CMT is owned by Paramount Global, which is based in Manhattan. Follow the money.
July 19, 2023 @ 4:42 pm
Jokes on fans of the video: Columbia isn’t a small town
Neither, for that matter, is Jason Aldean’s hometown of Macon, Georgia.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:56 am
nicely thought-out and written piece, Trigger
July 19, 2023 @ 7:58 am
Yeah, the whole thing is fucking stupid. Aldean did some derivative garbage trying to repeat the same old cliches, It didn’t deserve a bit of attention but the idiots made it go viral and now “canceled” it. That didn’t work with the first generation freak out about Rock and Roll in the 50’s, it didn’t work when Tipper Gore was trying to rid the world of scary heavy metal back in the 80s’ and it doesn’t work now. The idiots just revived the hack’s career.
I wondered if some people involved in this where trying to push a few buttons to see if they could get some cancel culture controversy to boost sales. The video does do the propagandistic editing style with rapid cut scenes intended to push emotional hot buttons. But it’s probably true that they aren’t really that clever either.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:39 am
i was thinking the same thing. Aldean and co. were looking for the Morgan Wallen’s effect.
July 20, 2023 @ 1:20 pm
I’m surprised the video didn’t have a cameo of Brantley Gilbert in his dumb baseball hat pulling a trigger or some shit. LOL
July 19, 2023 @ 7:59 am
I don’t know a whole lot about Jason Aldean. (Fly Over States is a good song). But, I do know a lot about growing up in a small town, and a little too much about living a few short miles from where a major portion of the brutal “protesting” was happening during the so called second coming of “The Summer Of Love”. As I sat an watched the evening news and saw my community burn, many thoughts crossed my mind. One of them was, there is no way this kind of behavior would ever be tolerated by the local residence of the place I grew up. But, then again you won’t find Apple and Nike stores to loot. Or any stores where high end hand bags are sold. so it’s probably a moot point. With that being said, I’ll avoid this song not because I’m offended by the message, but mainly because it’s derivative and not that interesting. If the social justice crowd knew how to keep their mouths shut, this song would have quickly been forgotten about. It’s gonna be a smash hit now tho.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:25 am
Precisely. The song was written about this disconnect. That we are supposed to not believe our eyes. We all saw the wanton murder of David Dorn live-streamed. We all were told protesting lockdowns was evil, then the CDC said in June, you all can riot now, because racism is the real virus. It’s like, excuse me, what the? And even if you believe what happened to Floyd was wrong, I don’t personally and support Chauvin completely, but even if you do hate what happened, people setting fire to police stations, firebombing Portland federal courthouse for 100 straight nights, the attempted White House storming on May 29th where BLM set fire to a guard post at the White House and dozens of agents were injured, none of that is a justified response. You have to behaved like civilized humans not thugs, hoodlums and criminals. What does stealing a flat screen tv, and stealing Nintendo Wii’s do to advance the cause? Notice how it’s never a single mom desperately poor stealing a weeks worth of food to feed her family and necessary items to survive, its TV’s, laptops and electronics. Maybe thats because looting has nothing to do with fighting racism. Jasons song is correct. If you tried looting and burning down a police station in red state small town USA, youd be dealt with appropriately. And I dont blame the big city police at all. If they do anything they can be brought up on charges and spend the rest of their life in prison for merely doing their job. And the criminals they put down are elevated to martyr status. When did it become controversial to state rioting and criminals doing bad things need to be punished? BLM is a terrorist organization no different than ISIS or AlQaeda. I stand with police not thugs, hoodlums and criminals. If you dont want to be murdered by police, follow lawful orders by the officers, dont run, dont mouth off, and dont do crime. Ive made it my entire life without being in a confrontation with an officer. If you throw rocks at a cop, what the hell do you thinks gonna happen to ya?
July 19, 2023 @ 9:45 am
Tell us you’re a racist without saying you’re a racist.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:10 am
Tell us you’re an idiot without telling us you’re an idiot.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:43 pm
One thing I know for a certainty: when someone is called a racist in this day and age there’s a nearly 100 percent chance they are not.
Surely you have something better to do than libel fellow country music fans?
July 19, 2023 @ 10:32 am
Good grief. Who types this stuff for you and ties your shoes. Because it’s pretty obvious you can’t.
This whole notion of “we’ll take care of oureselves, damnit!” is complete and utter bullshit. Where were you and those like you when the courthouse was being “firebombed” in Portland for 100 straight days*? Where were you when BLM prostestors were attempting to storm the WH? Where were you when people actually did storm the Capitol on January 6? I’ll tell you – sitting on your ass doing nothing. As you should have been.
“If you dont want to be murdered by police, follow lawful orders by the officers, dont run, dont mouth off,”
So not following lawful orders, running, or mouthing off are justifications for killing someone? Who made an undertrained, 25 year old from Buttholeville judge, jury, and executioner? Having said that, I agree – follow lawful orders, don’t run off, don’t run your mouth. But don’t shoot people who do.
“Notice how it’s never a single mom desperately poor stealing a weeks worth of food to feed her family and necessary items to survive, its TV’s, laptops and electronics. Maybe thats because looting has nothing to do with fighting racism.”
You are absolutely correct. 100%. And I’m not being ironic – I agree. It’s stupid and it does absolutely no good other than to get someone a new PlayStation. But you don’t summarily execute people for doing it, but you do try to address the root causes of that behavior, causes it’s obvious you cannot begin to understand. And you don’t make things better by writing**, recording, and releasing a piece of shit song like this.
*There were not 100 nights of firebombing the courthouse. There were over 100 nights of demonstrations, but only one or two (one or two too many, btw) where the courthouse was “attacked”).
**I know Aldean didn’t write it.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:07 pm
>>>If the social justice crowd knew how to keep their mouths shut, this song would have >>>quickly been forgotten about. It’s gonna be a smash hit now tho.
I’m not interested in that. I’m -very- interested in how well his -next- single does. Do all of his newbie R of Center fans stay with him, buy tickets to his next tour? Or does his next song tank, and start a slow career momentum downward?
July 21, 2023 @ 12:17 am
“If the social justice crowd knew how to keep their mouths shut.”
If only the founding fathers had kept their mouths shut and not demanded social justice too. Think ion how fun Aldean would have found small town life in a British colony. Literal elementary school level politics seems beyond your grasp.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:01 am
“It’s not that political subjects should be entirely extricated from the musical realm, or even from country music specifically.”
I feel like trigger often says stuff like this when he realizes this is the ultimate conclusion of his worldview. Like trigger often seems to argue both for authenticity in music but also a rejection of politics. But trigger knows these things are in tension. Politics is real life. And of course the solution to the opioid crisis and unemployment that degrades rural America he mentions will be a political solution.
This article misses the mark because it can’t really resolve that tension between authenticity and music as a thing that brings us together. Ultimately a coherent view would just say this song sucks cause it’s does because it’s not authentic because Jason Aldean is a business that sells products and not an artist. But real artists that make authentic music will talk about politics sometimes.
Unfortunately I think trigger let his personal dislike of journalists who comment on country music despite not really being fans cloud him as he always does on this stuff. This song sucks (as the article notes) but the other stuff is just a desperate attempt to explain why it being terrible isn’t the main thing needing to be remarked upon. The only thing trigger hates more than bad country music is liberals journalists.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:16 am
I’m not sure how “authenticity” factors in here. That’s a whole other can of worms that further complicates an already complicated situation, and I’m just not sure how relevant that is to this discussion.
I am VERY consistent with my criticisms of politics in music. I am not a “shut up and sing” guy. I don’t think that political subjects should be completely stricken from music, though it’s easy to say those things to attempt to dismiss my opinions. What I’ve always said is that using story and allegory to convey a message is a much more effective means of changing the world through music, and it also happens to be one that usually creates a lot less collateral damage in the process.
In 2016, Jason Aldean went on the record saying he didn’t want to broach politics, either with his public persona or his music. The excessive, unhinged, and disproportionate attacks on his wife for her Instagram posts—and on Aldean by proxy—were inevitably going to result in a response. I was saying that then, and I’m saying that now. The media poked the bear. Now they’re getting the claws. And now with the Streisand Effect in full force, the more they struggle to silence Jason Aldean and this song, the more powerful it will get. All of this is achingly, achingly predictable when you take a step back, take a deep breath, and dispassionately assess the situation, which so many in the media refuse to do.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:25 am
Yeah, you’re consistent alright.
Let’s not forget when you did a seven-paragraph screed to grinding your axe against Jason Isbell’s political views to introduce your review to “Reunions.” Hell, even with your review of “Weathervanes,” you couldn’t help but try to comment on what Isbell should and should not be singing about.
And as thegentile has pointed out, you usually decide to cut off the comments when people start calling out others’ racisms and bigotries rather than when those bigotries are expressed in the first place.
Yeah, Trigger, you’re *real* consistent.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:13 pm
You have SDE for real bro.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:32 pm
This from a guy who calls himself “BDE.”
July 21, 2023 @ 12:21 am
Excessive and unhinged? She’s a public figure. If she doesn’t want to deal with people’s responses to her saying stupid shit she shouldn’t have said stupid shit. She could have made her social media accounts private. She didn’t. Always funny when conservatives bitch and moan about “free speech” then are afraid to face any criticism and clap back. If the Aldeans can’t handle the heat they should do as Jason insisted he would and shut up and stick to the music.
July 22, 2023 @ 5:54 am
And the people that criticize her have a right to be attacked. Works both ways
July 19, 2023 @ 12:38 pm
This is right on the money, and this kind of post makes me really reconsider coming here. This just feels like Trigger has an axe to grind with this amorphous, nebulous mainstream media. What else needs to be said about this song other than that it’s reactionary trash?
July 19, 2023 @ 12:50 pm
What is Jason Aldean reacting to? He’s reacting to the media coverage of BLM, and more specifically the coverage of his wife for speaking out on political causes. They tried to say, “You can’t say these things.” So he’s saying “Fuck you, watch me.” That is what this is.
And by the way, I keep seeing people saying that I am “attacking” the media. On the contrary, I am giving them sage advice of how they can stifle things like “Try That In A Small Town,” and it’s by STOP GIVING IT OXYGEN. But they can’t help themselves because 1) They’re too wrapped up in their own ideology. 2) Rage is good for business. Just ask Jason Aldean.
This is a vicious culture war cycle, and the media is feeding it just like Jason Aldean. That is why it is important to take a step back, and dispassionately explain how we got here.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:34 pm
Look, I’m no fan of most media outlets, and I don’t even disagree with some of your criticisms of them, but it seems more important to talk about how genuinely awful and offensive this song is, not just thematically, but musically. Why complain about the people that get most things wrong all the time about everything (especially when it comes to popular culture)? This song should be called out and Jason Aldean should be shamed. He doesn’t need to be “canceled”. Right wingers have completely stripped that term of any meaning. But this bigoted, paranoid trash needs to be addressed.
Also, I meant reactionary in a political sense. I was going to say fascist-sympathizing, because that felt hyperbolic, but honestly there are so many parallels between what’s going right now and other historical fascist movements, it’s not that far off…
July 19, 2023 @ 5:51 pm
Seriously? His wife?
July 20, 2023 @ 7:12 pm
Yea. His wife. She’s been getting bashed for not repeating Moron Morris’ talking points. Why would Aldean just ignore that. You mess with my wife, I’m gonna respond. Since his wife is getting shit on by Morris and social media warriors, he responded with words in a song.
July 29, 2023 @ 8:12 am
Yeah, like he cheated on and publicly humiliated his first wife and the mother of his daughters, then lied about it and continued cheating on her until he dumped her… What a great guy and role model.
July 20, 2023 @ 6:18 pm
Trig,
You acknowledge that the media, especially the more progressive parts of the media, should “stop giving this oxygen”.
But then you defend (fairly strongly, I’d argue) the thing that you think the media should stop giving oxygen to. You say (or at least imply) that there’s fire…but then act like its just the media “blowing smoke” (Musgraves reference unintentional)???
July 20, 2023 @ 6:44 pm
Where in the world did I defend “Try That In A Small Town”? I criticized every single element of the song. If pointing out the empirical truth that the song doesn’t call for the active lynching of Black people like some in the media are portraying while also acknowledging the mistake of filming the video at the site of a lynching is “defending it,” then that is a sign that the goal posts are being moved so demonstrably by the public rhetoric that this song is destined to be the #1 song in country for the entirety of 2023.
We’re reaching a very dangerous territory here.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:09 pm
Replying to myself as I was notified of a reply to my comment (that appears to have been rescinded) that I would like to address:
Perhaps my use of the word “defend” was not perfect. I did find the vast majority of the article to be “defensive” certainly, in tone and in focusing on Aldean’s critics.
Personally I, like a lot of people, find this song and video certainly worthy of “discussion”. And I don’t mean highly dubious debates about whether or not Aldean is “pro-lynching”. Also it’s my understanding that this song and video were highly controversial before most people knew about the history of the site where the video was filmed…could we (and by “we” I don’t mean Trig, I mean everyone) at least not pretend that this is simply some “gotcha” by the media?
July 20, 2023 @ 8:25 pm
Hi Trigger! I’m writing you from Chicago, a Small Town (TM; sorry Mr. Mellencamp) with a Wikipedia confirmed population of 2,746,388.
When will there be a hit country song saluting a community like mine, where there are over fifty regional cuisines represented and at least two dozen buildings encouraging the expression of two dozen-plus interpretations of faith available to me with a $2.50 bus ride?

July 19, 2023 @ 8:14 am
I think one thing this article is wrong about is where the main gripes come from. “Academia” and “the media” were playing catch up. All the bitching was driven by independent country/Americana artists and fans.
And big problem with your articles on politics in this is that you act like only one side are actual real people. The conservatives are the majority in country music but lefties actually exist as well. They aren’t all led around by the nose by Rolling Stone.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:37 am
There is a cart before the horse dynamic here. Yes, there are a few artists also spurning mainstream country artists to “speak out,” and I made reference to that in the article. I’ve also written about this in detail, including recently with Ketch Secor and his call for country artists to come out for gun issues. Lo and behold, here Jason Aldean is coming out about gun issues. This is what I’ve been warning about.
But so much of this has to do with marketing. These artists know if they come out an advocate for left-leaning issues, they will ingratiate themselves to the media and receive favorable press coverage. We see this happen over and over. Obviously, Jason Aldean is pandering to a right-leaning constituency. But I’m not seeing an endless parade of think pieces about how country artists should come out and advocate for right-leaning issues. It is an everyday occurrence from the left.
I completely agree that the characterization of country fans by the media is a gross oversimplified stereotype. In truth there is much more nuance, lots of left leaning people, and you can’t discount the rise of independent country and Americana fans that are beginning to equal mainstream fans, and are much more omnivorous in their ideologies. This is why the political targeting of the country demographic for reformation through popular country music is so misguided, ineffective, and now, counter-productive.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:00 am
That makes more sense than I was initially getting. I still think you are a little over focused on the industry media. My point was that it’s not them or even the well known activists musicians who push this stuff online. I tend to see much smaller artists at all levels and fans doing the complaining.
A key point you are also missing is the strength of right wing media. No, the music industry press is not pushing demands. But FOX news and the rest of the right wing media food chain down from there are heavily invested in culture war including in country music. They put a lot of pressure on artists and both demand and reward performative nonsense like the Bud Light can shooting. Old print media like the New Yorker is of very little influence in comparison.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:15 am
No doubt media on the right is also responsible for these culture war back and forths. It just happens to be extremely fashionable on the left to use “country music” as a refraction point for virtue signaling on the left, especially in print media and on Twitter to gain clout in media/academic circles, and that is why it is referenced here so often, and also because it is commonly filled with nonfactual information and misnomers that deserve to be corrected. On the right you gain clout by releasing a song like Jason Aldean has done here, or defending it. But nobody is writing think-piece about how the way to defeat the left is by leveraging and co-opting country music on the right. On the left, it’s a nearly daily occurrence.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:58 pm
What media are you talking about, specifically? I haven’t seen any articles that did any more than state the facts of the criticism.
July 19, 2023 @ 6:44 pm
Are you kidding me? There have been half a dozen just today that take this incident, and try to use it to indict the entirety of country music. Here’s one that just came across my feed and I’m reading right now.
https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/jason-aldean-small-town-song-b2378338.html?curator=MusicREDEF
July 20, 2023 @ 8:38 am
You make a lot of good points Trigger but you still miss key pieces of the picture. I’m sure you must have seen the nonsense in the Federalist about country music being the only thing standing between the left and total cultural hegemony. This is the most important piece you miss. This is not new. It’s not as wordy and literate as the New Yorker and Jason Isbell but they put all kinds of pressure on country music to be pure right wing. That’s why Bill O’Rielly went after the Dixie Chicks way back when. That’s why FOX News ran hard with “Shut up and sing.” Please dont try to pretend that was not applying hard political pressure on artists.
This song is basically a bunch of lazy memes from right wing media tossed into musical form. That’s why it’s so shallow but it’s also why it’s reactive. Said memes intend to push emotional hot buttons for viewers and that’s what the song is trying to do. Of course it mostly triggered the left but what do you expect? I’m sure it’s giving these hacks to much credit but it’s almost like they were trying to get “canceled” to boost sales.
And now the propaganda structure is pushing hard on the paraoia that drove ‘shtut up and sing.” They think they own country music and they have always acted that way. It’s why the left is pushig on when they try to get people to speak out. I agree with your critique on that but still this is a full two sided problem.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:00 am
I have not seen the article in The Federalist, but I will check it out. And if it is as you characterize, I’m not for that either.
I’ve admonished what happened to the [Dixie] Chicks in numerous articles, and in unequivocal terms. I’ve called out artists when they engage in these blustery or jingoistic songs, including in this very article. But I do think the media is playing a significant role here, and I think that it’s one everyone would benefit from if they stepped back, took a deep breath, and understood how they are fueling the very thing they hate. This song was ignored for two months. Now, it’s international news. This will have significant implications on the trajectory of it. I’m not taking away the culpability for this bad song from Jason Aldean and the writers and placing it on the media. But none of the other media stories on it are going to point out the role the media is playing. That is why I’m doing so, and also because covering the media is one of the beats I’ve always covered at Saving Country Music.
This is not an attack on the media. This is me trying to take a dispassionate assessment of the situation and saying “Do you really want to bury this song? Don’t be hyperbolic. Criticize it if you want since there is plenty to criticize. But saying it’s pro-lynching and acting like it’s the end of the world is only going to fuel it oxygen.”
If folks don’t want to take that advice, so be it. Best of luck with trying to cancel it, Jason Aldean, and country music.
July 20, 2023 @ 5:36 pm
The UK? OpEds?
July 20, 2023 @ 5:51 pm
The Daily Beast has written four dedicated articles on the song alone. They were the ones to first dub it is a “pro-lynching song.”
Rolling Stone has also written three dedicated articles beyond their news reporting on the matter.
This is the biggest country music story in 2023 so far. This is inarguable.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:14 am
I am not the biggest JA fan. I have five songs I like. However, I will be that bumpkin’ that support this song & video. People are getting over having to pause & think about what nouns/verbs/adjectives can be used, at any given time. People are tired of others breakin’ sh*t just bc life ain’t fair. Lastly, if all the Isbell’s & Margo’s can sing & ramble about their truth, there’s going to be balance.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:41 am
Well, if this is what “balance” looks like for you…
July 19, 2023 @ 8:55 am
When have Margo or Isbell ever sung about kicking someone’s ass if they show up in their town
July 19, 2023 @ 10:36 am
Craig, they won’t, unless and until they cover Kinky Friedman’s “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews like Jesus Anymore”
July 19, 2023 @ 8:22 am
The worse thing this song does is make all of the tough guy stuff sound easy. I live in a tiny town. I hear people all the time talk about how they’ll do this or that if this or that happens. I boxed golden gloves, fought on the playground and street a lot because I thought it made me tough, and did mixed martial arts/BJJ until 52. I’ve lost so much more often than I’ve won. I know flaming liberals who fought overseas and own guns. I know hard right dudes that did the same. Assuming that because you live in a small town you automatically have some kind of edge is stupid. Underestimating anyone is stupid. Fighting is stupid. Fighting even to save your life is a 50/50 gamble, no matter your skill level. That 12 year old jacking your car just needs one lucky break and all of your tough guy skills are bleeding out on the sidewalk. People who know this don’t talk like this song, which sounds like a fat, barstool drunk just before he gets his ass kicked.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:51 am
Well said Craig. I debated with myself about weighing in on this topic. You said what I meant to say. Stepping back from soapbox.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:54 am
Easy to be a tough guy from ‘any ol’ barstool’.
July 21, 2023 @ 6:12 pm
Great comment, Craig. And as a leftie, I gotta say, there are a lot of right-wing politicians and media types who fit that tough-talking, barstool blowhard profile. Including the draft-dodger who told his followers on Jan. 6 they had to be “strong.”
July 19, 2023 @ 8:26 am
While it is an awful song in so many ways I agree that the song is not pro-lynching. I too doubt seriously the site of the video was chosen because there was a lynching in its past. But it is clever enough to wink/wink nod/nod to those fans of him who may be inclined to hold racist views. The writers view of a small town is also a fantasy. I live in one. I’ve also lived in large cities. People are people. There are good ones and bad ones in both. The song writers attempt to stereotype small town people as good and big city people as bad is silly but also potentially dangerous.
July 19, 2023 @ 4:43 pm
I have one thing to say to you and Jason Aldean and that’s RMFT.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:37 am
LOL! Go Dawgs! Woof! Woof! Woof!
July 19, 2023 @ 8:33 am
i grew up in a small town, and the thing i’ll always treasure about my upbringing are all those times when i joined my fellow community members in viciously beating anyone who we disagreed with.
if jason aldean didn’t want his song to be associated with lynching, perhaps he could have: 1) filmed it in his home small town (jason’s is macon lol), 2) filmed it in a small town that he currently lives in (again, lol), 3) not conflated protests with random violence (burning a flag vs. armed robbery), 4) filmed it at a place not famous for a lynching (hard to do in the south, ik) while singing about mob violence.
but let’s focus on jason aldean being from macon. a city larger than charleston, kansas city, etc. what we have here (again) is some guy singing about something he doesn’t know about to drum up the right wing (see also: kid rock).
July 19, 2023 @ 8:46 am
“4. filmed it at a place not famous for a lynching”
Yeah, this is what sealed the deal for me. I mean the whole message was horrible to begin with but that part just pushed it even further along the track of being the absolute bottom of the barrel.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:05 am
The courthouse is not “famous” for the lynching that occurred there. It’s famous for being a courthouse. A lynching also happened there, just like they happened in a lot of places in the South. As I said in the article, the production crew of the video should have been better at vetting the location, and this has opened up the song and video to criticism. But if people think the way to undercut this song is to say Jason Aldean is actively advocating for lynching here, that’s going to fall on deaf ears for most rational people. It was an oversight, not an active effort.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:25 am
Says you.
I believe when this is your message and you pick that location AND people get confused/upset/doubtful about why you would pick such a location, then it absolutely underscores the lynching message I and many others hear in this ‘song’. Bit too much of a coincidence.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:58 am
LOL who are the conspiracy theorists now?
July 19, 2023 @ 10:14 am
Yeah, you people are most definitely confused.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:17 am
“You people”
July 19, 2023 @ 10:18 am
Like I said in the article, either Jason Aldean is a maniacal calculating huckster playing 3D chess, or an ill-informed moron. You may want to go with the former, but I’ll pick the latter.
“it absolutely underscores the lynching message I and many others hear in this ‘song’.”
Strange that nobody heard that message for the first two months it was out. They just heard another shitty pandering pop country song.
This maximalist outrage stance is only going to fuel people’s undying support for this song.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:23 am
“Strange that nobody heard that message for the first two months it was out.”
people heard a song about small town america taking the law into their own hands. and then what happened? was the video released? where a literal lynching happened instead of literally anywhere else? why a courthouse at all? and that’s when there was outrage? weird.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:41 am
I can only speak for myself.
I heard about this song today for the first time. Popcountry or whatever you would call this tripe is not something that gets a lot of airplay over here in the Netherlands. So I only found out about it because of the controversy.
And to the dipstick who called me a conspiracy theorist; we have a song threatening people with language extremely close to that of sunset towns with a video shot at the site of lynching. Where is the conspiracy exactly?
July 19, 2023 @ 12:58 pm
So your argument is that, while filming a video for a song about vigilante killing shooting, they just *coincidentally* happened to film in front of a courthouse where a white lynch mob killed a black man. and they just *accidentally* intercut footage of the lynching courthouse with footage of black protestors. And that not a single person on his team bothered googling the place beforehand.
You’re twisting yourself in knots to deny the reality here. You’re just so obsessed with defending conservatives that you’ll deny the obvious evidence that everyone else sees. He could be dancing around in a Klan hood and you’d still be arguing that he just did it by accident.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:14 pm
The setting for the video is unfortunate, and if Aldean was smart, he would be more apologetic on that specific point. But do I think it was calculated? Absolutely not. It was incompetence.
Also, Aldean has nothing to do with any of this. A committee wrote the song, a producer chose it for him, and production company chose the place for the video, a limo driver brought him there, and the director told him where to stand and flex. Aldean’s a glorified puppet.
Videos are funded by the labels because they’re elements of promotion. If anyone deserves to be questioned for this, it’s them. And do I think a major American music corporation maliciously decided to shoot the video there? Absolutely not. Again, incompetence. And despite the media’s portrayals, that courthouse is not specifically known for the lynching. It’s known for being a courthouse. A lynching also happened there.
Not a good look at all, but also not a malicious attempt at anything.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:17 pm
What video director does Google searches on “history of ?”
Do you know how stupid that sounds?
July 19, 2023 @ 5:10 pm
A lynching that happened 96 years ago. Short of a Google search no one would even know it was the scene of a lynching. Did you know about it before everyone blew up over this song? No, I seriously doubt you did Dan. And 99.9% of the people including myself didn’t know either. Be logical please.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:49 pm
The whole “lynching” claim is so ridiculous that I would have thought it to be satire 10 years ago. I live in Columbia and music videos and movies are frequently shot here because of the location and limited traffic as well as the look of the square. People claiming the “lynching connection” was intended sound like straight up Q-anon believers.
If anyone wants to call me racist; the only time I called 911 in Columbia was when two “scholars” were holding down another dude and was punching him in the intersection in front of my house at 2am. I didn’t go outside and use any fake bravado but my registered Glock was within reach.
July 20, 2023 @ 2:51 pm
There was a Christmas movie filmed there too. Is that Christmas movie racist also?
July 19, 2023 @ 5:12 pm
Exactly. If he’d shot the video near the place in Money, Mississippi, where Emmett Till dared to look the wrong way at a white woman, that would have been unquestionably racist and deliberate. But as you say, lynchings were daily occurrences in the South from the late 1800s well into the 20th century. I used newspapers.com to search for “lynched” and the names of several cities and towns I used to visit during my years there as a sportswriter and guess what? There were newspaper reports on lynchings in just about every one of them!
July 19, 2023 @ 11:49 am
Hard Disagree. The video clips he includes in his video are real. BLM riots in 2020 were deadly, violent, and were mass events of destruction and chaos. They shouldn’t be celebrated. Chauvin did what had to be done to deal with an out of control meth’d out fentanyl felon who was not following lawful orders, and it was Saint Floyd himself who asked to be on the ground. He was having a panic attack because he was driving hs car under the influence of meth, fentanyl and marijuana, and swallowed the baggie of drugs prior to Chauvin approaching him. Chauvin did what he was lawfully allowed to do which is deal with a noncompliant suspect who let’s be clear has a rap sheet a mile long and participated in an armed robbery of a pregnant women. Saint Floyd put a gun to the woman’s stomach. Clearly he is a martyr and the good guy. If people dont want to be called thugs and hoodlums and criminals, maybe dont try burning down federal courthouses and throwing rocks at cops and destroying cities. Just a thought.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:03 pm
“‘just a thought”
i have never heard that phrase used so liberally. not one up there, huh?
“Chauvin did what he was lawfully allowed to do”
damn, why didn’t you tell his lawyers this? that would be great for his trial and appeal.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:19 pm
Seek therapy for your childhood trauma, gentile.
It’s made you insane.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:11 pm
let’s prove that insanity in a court of law, like chauvin murdering a guy!
July 20, 2023 @ 7:34 pm
Chauvin did murder a guy, gentile. But do you really believe that a dirty cop (of which there are undoubtedly plenty) gives a group of criminals the right to burn down businesses and steal shit all across the country?
July 19, 2023 @ 12:35 pm
Look, freakin’ Brad Paisley–as big a nice guy as you’re going to find–was pilloried for releasing a song called “Accidental Racist”–which was clearly intended as a plea for tolerance and understanding on all sides.
Country is no longer an island unto itself as it was in Hag’s–or even Hank Jr.’s–day. It’s very hard to get away with putting out a song on a major label and on mainstream sites that’s goes aggressively and angrily against the prevailing p.c. D.E.I. narrative.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:40 am
It’s a bad/stupid song with a somewhat decent message, which also includes a dose of misinformation and hypocrisy. I say it’s a somewhat decent message based on how I interpret part of the message as sticking up for law enforcement and people in your community. Not the chest thumping BS of good ol’ boys being tougher and more moral than folks from elsewhere.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:35 am
“You cross that line, it won’t take long for you to find out – I recommend you don’t”.
Is the song really pro-law enforcement if it’s built around the threat of violence?
That’s the issue here – not the right-wing talking points in the lyrics. It’s the threat that something’s going to happen to you if you disagree that’s the problem.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:55 am
I agree with you about the message though. It’s the way the song is delivered. Plenty of ways for him to sing about pro-law enforcement and community values without the big tough guy act.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:09 pm
That’s where some of the hypocrisy is im talking about. I’m also referring to the hypocrisy behind the right considering themselves pro law enforcement when we all saw the Jan 6 footage and heard Trump for defunding the FBI because he doesn’t like being investigated for his crimes. But since the political aspects are implied and not directly addressed in the song, I didn’t want to get into that too much.
July 21, 2023 @ 12:32 am
Encouraging vigilantes is not pro law enforcement. Are you an idiot? A bunch of random non police officers in some fictional small town banding together to beat up protesters and vandals is still illegal and would only cause a bigger headache for actual law enforcement. Always funny how the Punisher and Blue Lives folks seemingly have no idea what the law is let alone what law enforcement officers would prefer.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:40 am
It’s just a bad song – that doesn’t make JA an asshole. His response to the reaction to the song is what makes him an asshole.
Admit that using that particular courthouse was a mistake – or at least admit that it might be offensive to some people. Then move on. His childish and defensive reaction makes him look as stupid as he is.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:01 am
You can say, “Obviously, I’m not advocating for lynching, and if I’d known about the history of the place, we probably would have chosen a different site,” and not give up any ground to your adversaries. It shows you’re not a complete meat head. But then again, this is Jason Aldean.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:39 am
That may be true if JA was arguing with people driven by logic not politics. They were going to raise a stink anyway so kudos to him for not backing down. Im a huge history buff and I bet I could tie thousands of famous locations in the US to our history of slavery. Should everyone be scared to have public locations visible in their art (and with JA I use the word art VERY loosely)? Of course not. No one should walk on eggshells because the people who are offended by everything that doesnt fit their groupthink are offended. And lets face it, if it was a pro BLM video no one would be on his case for the location. Its just an excuse to go after him. If you give an inch, they take a yard. And for the record I cant stand JA or his music, despite defending him on this.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:43 am
Had Aldean and his handlers been smart, they’d have added a chorus at the end that flipped the script and was all about the benefits of living in a small town:
Watch the sun come up at dawn,
Say good morning to your Uncle John
Eat pancakes and eggs at the cafe
A smile from most folks you meet today
Try that in a small town – I hope you will
Basically anything that wasn’t “try that shit around here and we’ll mess you up.”
July 19, 2023 @ 8:59 am
Sounds like ‘Never Met a Stranger’ from Dan Tyminski’s new album.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:47 am
I’ll likely post a full response to this masturbatory journalism, but you really can’t avoid blaming the liberals for shitty conservative pandering, can you? You spent significantly longer criticizing liberal media than you did actually discussing this song or why it sucks.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:21 pm
Liberal media is the reason why this idiot has the #1 song on iTunes now.
July 19, 2023 @ 6:40 pm
as if conservatives don’t have their own agency. “owning the libs” is a shit moral code
July 19, 2023 @ 8:49 am
Pretty well written and I agree with most of it. However, I don’t feel the subject matter of the protests is “dated.” There are too many people who want us to forget about the absurdity of the lockdowns, the now proven bogus witch-hunts, and the destructive riots. I say NEVER forget.
Yeah, this song is pretty bad (as I said before, kinda funny), but for the above reason and for the reasons you mention about the hand-wringing, I’m glad he made it and that it will hit numero uno.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:54 am
which witch hunts are you talking about?
July 19, 2023 @ 4:19 pm
@gent–
Which witch-hunts?
People were literally getting fired from corporate and semi-public-sector jobs in this country because they said “all lives matter.”
July 21, 2023 @ 12:34 am
That’s not a witch hunt. Businesses have different standards. If you’re a professional in an industry and don’t understand professional norms that’s on you for being shitty at your job.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:04 am
If you have to ask…
July 19, 2023 @ 11:05 am
so no answer? got it.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:35 am
1. We both know what my reply meant. You get it my original comment or you don’t. We both know we won’t agree.
2. Not going to derail the topic like you’re so fond of doing. It was only worth me bringing up as a brief reference of similarity to the other nonsense mentioned in this article.
But sure…you got me dude. Nice dunk and all that????
July 19, 2023 @ 11:40 am
“i totally have a hot girlfriend, she just lives in canada” – jake
July 19, 2023 @ 1:12 pm
In 2023, nothing makes a person look stupider than referring to “witch-hunts.”
July 19, 2023 @ 1:22 pm
Yeah sorry, I had a longer explanation but I was FaceTiming with my Canadian girlfriend at the time and she’s super hot so I got distracted.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:27 pm
“In 2023, nothing makes a person look stupider …”
: D Yeah, Jake.
Take that.
*I’m sorry, tried not to.
Cross my heart …
“There are too many people who want us to forget about the absurdity of the lockdowns, the now proven bogus witch-hunts, and the destructive riots. I say NEVER forget.”
Totally agree, Mr. J.C.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:53 am
Didn’t Tyler Childers do a better job addressing BLM? Yeah, he did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ3_AJ5Ysx0
July 19, 2023 @ 11:57 am
No. I dont support BLM, its message or its goal. It’s a racist terrorist paramilitary organization that believes wanton murder and property destruction are acceptable and necessary to overthrow the capitalist fascist order and get rid of the nuclear family. I dont support any of those goals or aims. If your organization cant make its point without violence and terrorism and thats exactly what it is, they are using violence to enact a political goal, I don’t want any part of that. BLM views the people Tyler is talking about as racist white privileged male oppressors in the male patriarchy. Having common cause with them because people in his town are struggling is silly. They don’t go together. And his point make the point for me. A bunch of roving whiteys arent leaving their domiciles in Hickman Holler to terrorize people in the cities. BLM absolutely does this though. If your name focuses on only one group you are by definition racist. This country has so many ethnic groups and races. If your sole mission is to help blacks and view everyone else as mere obstacles and downright oppressors in getting that goal obtained, you are by the dictionary definition and raging racist.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:38 pm
When this BLM stuff started happening, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam tweeted out a picture of himself outside the BLM area of Seattle with his cardboard “BLM” sign and his ‘rona mask on. Someone tweeted him back and said “Dude, you’ve had five drummers. How many of them were black? ” He still hasn’t answered.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:50 pm
BLM is also a proven Marxist grift, which serves its pitiful supporters right.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:53 am
I absolutely support him speaking out, saying what he believes, and, frankly…saying out loud what a huge portion of Americans think. That’s his right as an artist. If we have songs like “Cop Killer,” then the other side should have its say. Over the past several months, the silent majority is silent no more. But here’s the problem I have with the song: it sounds like Every. Other. Jason. Aldean. Song. That’s the biggest transgression here, not the subject matter. If it stood out from his catalog, it might be something worthy. But unless you really pay attention, it’s just more MOR country background noise. However, by trying to cancel the song, CMT just shined a really bright spotlight on it. Watch it start climbing streaming charts now. Cancel culture never learns.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:30 am
Cop Killer was taken off the album.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:41 pm
And Ice-T has played a cop on television for how many years now?
July 21, 2023 @ 12:37 am
Cop Killer, a song that was removed by its label 30 years ago by an artist who stars as a cop on major network tv. Keep on crying snowflake.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:59 am
You all know what to do, let’s get this to Billboard #1! Stream it!
July 19, 2023 @ 9:01 am
I am old enough to remember the controversy and drama over “gangsta rap” back in the day. Seems shoe is on the other foot here, but same battle over values, free expression and all that. And, back in those days journalists who weren’t listener’s or fans commented as well. Calling that out is a bit odd, because anyone can read lyrics or see a video and form an opinion whether an insider or not. Once it’s public, anyone can comment. You don’t have to be a fan to see a video or hear a lyric to firm an opinion and write on it.
Sensational music (I won’t call it anything other than that) has been around for ages, no matter the “motive”. What’s happened here is just old White Claw in New bottles, however in a more polarized and volatile time, more extreme than Tobey, the Chick’s our gangsta rap a decade before it. Our society is more divided than ever and the intense vitriol proves it.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:09 am
Yes, prudish American hall monitoring and pearl clutching is in full force here, as is hypocrisy.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:52 am
This from the guy who spent paragraph upon paragraph talking about what Isbell should and shouldn’t have said.
Yeah, the hypocrisy is in full force indeed.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:09 am
The reason that I spoke up about Jason Isbell’s terse political statements is because I don’t want his lack of tact when it comes to political subjects affecting the reception for his music. His last album got a 8.8/10 review here. His song “King of Oklahoma” is currently #2 on my Top 25 Playlist. And whenever I post about him, the comments sections fill up with everyone saying what a commie he is. I’ve never told him or anyone else to “shut up and sing.” But if they would let their music like “King of Oklahoma” and “Cast Iron Skillet” do the talking for them, they may actually see the change they want to make with their music, as opposed to having the people they’re trying to reach tune them out because they’ve been disrespected. This is the opinion I try to convey. And though some love to characterize that as an “attack” on Jason Isbell, my concern is built from real world experience in watching how people react to songs and statements. I am trying to be constructive with my criticism.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:27 am
“I am trying to be constructive with my criticism.”
Only when it comes to liberal politics. You dance around subjects like bigotry and racism within country music fandom, or handwaved then away, or somehow blame liberals for racist rednecks. You are insanely unbalanced when it comes to this subject, pandering to your largely conservative audience.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:42 am
“Only when it comes to liberal politics.”
You don’t have to go any farther than this very article to see that I will criticize songs with conservative politics as well, as I have done many times in the past. If I have any bias, it’s against terse and trite political statements in songs, period.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:48 am
“You don’t have to go any farther than this very article to see that I will criticize songs with conservative politics as well”
You spent more time in this very article criticizing liberal media than you did anything else. I think you know that because you had to say multiple times that you aren’t defending this song or video (which btw, isn’t a criticism of the song or video). You write multiple paragraphs criticizing liberal politics every time you write about Isbell, and somehow chose to do the same here. It’s so blatantly biased.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:35 pm
B.S.
You may not have used the exact words, but the whole “Reunions” album cycle you basically spent telling him to shut up and sing. You know it. And everyone here knows it, too, Kyle.
July 21, 2023 @ 12:40 am
“I don’t want his lack of tact when it comes to political subjects affecting the reception for his music.”
It doesn’t. He plays larger venues, has 4 Grammys, has an HBO movie, flies on a private jet and collects some of the world’s most expensive collectible guitars, all of his albums have universal acclaim on Metacritic. Stop pretending that by whining about his politics you’re somehow saving his career.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:03 am
Jesus, we’re screwed wasting time on this damn song while everything around us goes to hell.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:08 am
Aldean kind of knew what he was doing releasing this song, and the media fell right into the trap.
Not a ton of people who like Aldean are going to care what these think pieces say. If Rolling Stone country starts using all these superlatives and that is dangerous, people will flock to it for non-musical reasons.
Cmt pulls it…and people dont forget what the Cmt awards was just promoting. Not a ton of crossover between that and Aldean fans. The really difficult part is boycotting CMT is difficult since people already were for the content of the channel. I doubt anyone on here even knows when they play videos.
Anothet stupid controversy that will blow up in their face.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:11 am
I’m shocked at the controversy. The song is correct, Jason is correct and it speaks for half the country who, oh my god the absolute horror, view riots and lawlessness as something that needs to be punished by the law. We all lived through the summer of 2020, it was horrific. The left excused the violence because it supported their political objectives. When the tables turned the conservatives rioted at the Capitol, rioting became bad and those people who were unlucky enough to be let into the building by police or grandmas taking pictures were called domestic terrorists and had their lives ruined. This dichotomy and difference was stark. But it started even before this. In the early pandemic when peaceful Michiganders made their way to the state capitol to protest lockdowns and say, the audacity, that shutting down their business would make it impossible to feed their family and pay the bills. Those people were called terrorists and told they wanted people to die. Fast forward a few months and the same people who were against the protests were now telling us it was our duty to riot in the name of Saint Fentanyl Floyd. Thats the stuff that fueled Jasons song. What in it is incorrect? If you tried rioting in a small town in red america, the sheriff would deal with you. Thats not false or inflammatory, it’s factually correct. As it should be. Jason needs to continue to speak up, not back down, and we need to get this track to #1. We have Mickey, Karen Morris, Margo, Sturgill, Isbell, shoved down our throats all day with Woke SJW views, you have to allow the other side a say as well. And this is the other side, the correct one. If you label Nashville as inherent racists as Mickey and Karen did, you have to allow those people a chance to respond and push back. Isbell talks about a White Mans World, and calls people racist all day long. Other sides need to speak. Aldeans sentiment is needed and speaks for us redstaters who view riots as something that needs to be stopped, punished and those rioters need to be imprisoned. Evidently thats a controversial take. We dont need woke country in Nashville, on the radio, or in our nation as a whole. It is un-American and Anti-American.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:30 am
Time for your nap, sweetie
July 19, 2023 @ 11:40 am
I’m wide awake, Craig. Many millions more are now. Im just not woke.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:08 pm
aww it’s drooling on itself. must be teething.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:22 pm
What a great comment. I probably won’t listen to this song because Jason Aldean’s music sucks, but I think it is well worth him saying it.
July 21, 2023 @ 12:47 am
“view riots and lawlessness as something that needs to be punished by the law”
He’s advocating for vigilante justice, which is illegal and creates issues for actual law enforcement. That is not punishment by the law.
Aldean is a spineless bitch. He doesn’t have views on politics left or right. His wife has views on Instagram and he paid 5 Nashville songwriters (likely liberals) to write a fictional song allegedly about small town life (something Aldean has never experienced). That’s not making a statement. It’s being a coward who can’t coherently string together actual beliefs.
“Anti-American”
Yet you support a treasonous attempt to storm the Capitol and overthrow the legal government.
July 21, 2023 @ 8:51 am
No one had weapons on 1/6. How can you overthrow the gov’t without guns and weapons? Had they actually successfully taken control of the Capitol that day and seized it, would they have been able to control the US Gov’t? You cant be that daft can you, Jonny? People putting their feet up on Pelosi’s desk does not mean they have control of the nuclear codes. The vast majority of those on 1/6 were nonviolent Patriots. In contrast to the 9 months of violent terrorist actions of BLM the year prior. No one died that day either. So not only were no weapons present, but no one was murdered by the mob on 1/6, also in contrast to BLM who killed 40 people in Summer of Fentanyl Floyd, including the murder of Officer David Dorn, little Scoria Turner an 8 year old black girl, murdered in Utah when a man at a BLM protest opened fire into the car driven by Secorias parents, killing Scoria. Cannon Hinnant as well. The only casualty on 1/6 was Ashli Babbitt but no one cared because the hat she wore was a different color.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:11 am
Aldean was born and raised in Macon, GA (pop. 153,095) and lives in Nashville (pop. 692,500) so his expertise of “small towns” is no doubt anecdotal. Maybe the committee of FOUR songwriters that were required to pen this bit of misguided muck are from small towns. I dunno.
But Trig, I do have to challenge one of your contentions, or simply offer an alternative explanation. You write, “…the media and academia disrespected country artists and their fans with their down-looking, arrogant ideas that they could mold their minds through the country art form. Now it’s officially backfired.”
That statement requires you to know what was in the hearts or minds of the people writing the articles or academic pieces. While I have not read *all* the articles or *all* the academic pieces, what evidence do you have that the authors’ aim was disrespect? Can one not argue that “down-looking” and “arrogant” are subjective terms dependent upon the eye of the beholder?
Which brings me to an alternative theory. Might this song simply be an example of a further loosening of public behavior? The fringes feel emboldened to do things they kept hidden in the past. There was a time when the thought of an attempted insurrection would’ve been unthinkable but, hey, we crossed that line — and a bunch of other lines along the way. We’ve got members of Congress refusing to condemn White nationalists. We’ve got a group of conservative women quoting Hitler. We had a president claiming there were “good people” in a torch-carrying White supremacist mob in Charlottesville. People feel emboldened to express things like Aldean’s call to vigilante justice, and it goes beyond mere exercise of a First Amendment right.
I was born and raised in a small town. Spent more time in a small town than Aldean ever has. As you rightly note, small towns have their crime problems. At least in my experience, residents seemed perfectly content to let police and the courts handle the problem. Taking justice into your own hands is a monumentally dumb idea. Aside from being bad legal advice, Aldean’s song is a paen to toxic masculinity masquerading as a social statement.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:41 pm
I get it. You’re from a small town, maybe in a red state. Using phrases like “toxic masculinity” makes you feel smart and better than some of the people you grew up around. College (and/or Tik Tok) is a hell of a drug.
Here’s some real talk: in just about any other country in the world, outside of maybe Singapore or Japan, Jan 6 would have been a small demonstration. In Peru, people would’ve forgotten about it already. Hell, in the context of the 1960s US, it might have been a tiny blip. You care about it because you were told to. And it makes you feel good that you aren’t like *those* people.
The people in Charlottesville were/are horribly wrong. They also represent a tiny, tiny fraction of the population. I’m not particularly fond of Trump. But the vast majority of Trump supporters don’t hate people of other races.
I can tell you, sadly from experience, that academics have a seething contempt for white, rural people. Far beyond what Trigger alludes to here. They also, in general, have really demeaning and condescending attitudes toward non-white rural and poor people. And non-white people with traditional values? Forget about it. Absolute unmitigated rage—they’re seen as traitors.
So I implore you to stop parroting MSNBC talking points, hang out with people in your small town, and treat them with the same dignity you would anyone else. The world is far bigger and more complicated than your worldview.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:26 pm
You must be an economist because you’ve crammed more assumptions into one post than most people cook up in a whole year. I’ve lived abroad (in three different countries) since 2014, so it has literally been nine years since I’ve watched MSNBC. Hard to pick up their talking points if you never hear folks spouting them. And I dare say my literal “worldview” is a bit bigger than yours. Or maybe you’ve lived in other countries.
One of the reasons Jan. 6 was a big deal — and crossed a threshold — was because Americans had never done anything like that before. A U.S. president had never put out a call for people to come to Washington to protest a certification of a vote (“Be there, will be wild!”) so that’s kind of out of the ordinary. Yes, violent political protests like that happen in other countries from time to time, but they hadn’t happened in the U.S. Maybe some other group stormed the U.S. Capitol and fought with police and I never heard about it.
Similarly, gatherings like the “Unite the Right” mob in Charlottesville had never happened on that scale before. But those folks felt emboldened to do what they did. They felt it was perfectly ok to march down the street shouting racist and antisemitic chants.
And I am sooo tired of people in small towns playing the victim card and claiming “elites” (whatever that means) look down on them. That presupposes “elites” spend time thinking about them. That presupposes there aren’t wealthy people or highly educated folks living in small towns. They’re not “elites”? My hometown of 2,400 had some of both. I guess if you have an advanced degree and/or are wealthy, you’re only an “elite” if you live in a big city?
July 20, 2023 @ 8:16 am
You poor child. I will encourage you to keep reading. Read more about American history. Read more about history in general. 30 seconds of googling is enough to disprove your comments about the capitol.
“Violent political protests hadn’t happened in the U.S.”
…I don’t even know how to respond to that level of ignorance.
Instead of doubling down, admit you know very little. Either that or you’re lying to define “political violence” as something only carried out by your current enemies.
If you’re an honest person, start with “Days of Rage” by Bryan Burrough. And that’s just a small sampling of what went on during one or two decades.
Have you heard about the LA riots? Eco-terrorism in the PNW? What went down in the Appalachian coalfields in the 20s? In the 60s and 70s? The NYC draft riots during the civil war? There have been violent political protests or clashes in just about every single decade of this country’s existence.
This country has been a cauldron of violence since the beginning. Violence is our game. And it hasn’t always been a simple, good vs. evil, red team v. blue team game. Like real life, sh*t is messy.
Hell, I’ll give you the key to the whole thing right now: we are all sinners. Ain’t just White people, ain’t just Black people, ain’t just MS-13, some dumbass with a torch and a polo shirt, or the motorcycle gang in your town. Every single person, every group of people is responsible for some awful sh*t. Maybe it’s different awful sh*t, but it’s still awful. And because of that, there ain’t gonna be a utopia on this earth.
Someone who knows that is far, far wiser than someone who doesn’t. And 95% of academics don’t know it.
July 20, 2023 @ 11:00 am
What part of my qualifier “…violent POLITICAL protests…” was hard to understand? Of course there have been protests (some even violent) in the U.S., but which ones involved actual elective politics and protested somebody’s election to office? Which ones were spurred by a sitting President?
THAT is a threshold we’d not crossed before.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:24 am
It’s almost as if you sat down and thought “what’s the dumbest thing I can possibly say” and then just started typing.

You poor child, you speak as if you have any level of casual knowledge of political science or basic US history when you’re woefully lacking.
“Hell, in the context of the 1960s US, it might have been a tiny blip.”
Under the JFK, LBJ, or Nixon administrations had anyone tried to storm the capitol to overturn election results the National Guard would have likely massacred dozens of people. Pull your head out of your ass.
“in just about any other country in the world, outside of maybe Singapore or Japan, Jan 6 would have been a small demonstration”
Here we have an absolutely nonsense comparison involving a Democratic state and an authoritarian city-sate. What reasoning do you have for this? Singapore arrests nearly anyone protesting anything for any reason. A similar protest happened with government offices being stormed in Brazil after their last election, hundreds were arrested, are b being charged, and investigations are ongoing.
Since you’d like to also whine about small towns and “hanging out” pleas tell me how much all these rural folks would enjoy it if a giant mob stormed and destroyed their local police offices, court houses, and elections offices. I’m sure all those uneducated rural folks you pretend to know would be totally fine with that.

“Try That In A Small Town” is exactly about that, of how they wouldn’t allow that. Yes, there is hypocrisy in that when considering Jan. 6th, but you’ve worked yourself into such a froth, you forgot what the original topic was here.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:46 pm
“Aside from being bad legal advice, Aldean’s song is a paen to toxic masculinity masquerading as a social statement.”
There’s no legal advice in the song or a pretension of it. There’s no explicit or overt praise of masculinity, either. And down here at the barn, where we still read books, the word is spelled “paean.”
July 20, 2023 @ 12:08 am
Good catch on “paean.” I need more book-learning’. Out here in the sticks, all we got to read is a dog-eared copy of “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” hanging in the outhouse.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:42 pm
Agreed 100%. Too much talk about “elitists” “down talking” and “disrespect” against country “art form” – that also goes both ways; the so called trash talk about “east coast elitists” , “Hollywood types”, “sell out” “academics” and all those other whistles are fine aright? – cuts both ways. As far as “journalist/academia” and down-looking ideas”? that’s disingenuous as well; since there is ample criticism of other genres et al to go around. Ideas and tastes are subjective. And equally fair game.
The only backfiring here is the stupidity of writing off something that is patently offensive to many as “art”. And the same people defending this (particular instance of) country “art” form are the same ones who decry the violence in other “art” forms (rap for instance). Cuts both ways again.
Hypocrisy, also, abounds and it stinks when the same people who cry victim and try to justify this are just as guilty of the very same transgressions. The only “arrogance” is the attempted squelched of calling this out, when its okay to not complain about subjects that are equally bad elsewhere.
What ever “controversy” that occurs is because an artist placed something in the public spectrum for ALL to see, and then whining when they are forced to take ownership of something they willingly put out there.
Lastly, don’t play victim. You reap the “disrespect” you sow. And both the singer and the songwriters are equally complicit, no ones arm was twisted here.
And motives, it doesn’t matter. The hype, controversy and incitement will nourish the egos involved , without regard. Crying “cancel” with a fat wallet is so childish.
(PS raised in Stone Ridge, pop 1100, not a “metropolis” like Macon )
July 20, 2023 @ 7:18 am
At no point in this article or even in any of the 330-plus comments so far has anyone mentioned “east coast elitists” or “Hollywood types.” The reason that the media and Academia are cited here is because there are literally HUNDREDS of examples to cite where they have demanded country artists speak out politically. They are also the ones describing this as a “pro-lynching song” in a way that is exacerbating the Streisand Effect, and fueling the counter-backlash that will put this song to #1. I am not “attacking’ anyone for sharing these opinions. I am just stating facts from what we’ve seen from these scenarios over, and over, and over. But if folks don’t want to take that advice, full speed ahead, and best of luck to you getting this song removed from the public square.
I have never used the term “coastal elite” here. Last year I reviewed an album from Adeem the Artist. It was mostly positive, but I made some of the same points I made in this article about how to actually change people’s perspectives through music. He made a video mocking me, constantly saying “coastal elite,” as how I referenced him, when in truth I gave detailed background information on his rural upbringing and never said or implied anything close to that about him.
July 20, 2023 @ 3:57 pm
Never said you personally used those terms, but they are thrown by those who so called “conservative valued” authors/pundits when calling issues of which they don’t agree.
Never said “you” were attacking anyone either. My comments were directed at the general public and certainly some participants on this forum, who toss insults like “woke” or what ever when making their arguments.
Whether people’s perceptions are changed by music is debatable. What music does do, however, is showplace an artists point of view. And in this case, I’m glad this song is out there, just like every other song from who ever else, any genre, proving my point that being tasteless, gratuitous and vulgar is universal.
None of this is personal on you – it is in the aggregate of the entries on this forum, and nor suprised one bit.
Actually, whole song mess is disappointing but not surprising given the sate of affairs this country is in. What ever the discussion of this so is, the commentary in this forum certainly shows it.
(As far as “coastal elite”, I am not familiar with the shade, unjustly, tossed at you. The coastal elite comment is certainly thrown alot in many places as a contrast to so called “patriots/rural et al”. This whole subject was goingvto bectoxic fir sure abd it didn’t disappoint…)
July 19, 2023 @ 9:15 am
“Obviously, Jason Aldean is pandering to a right-leaning constituency.”
Obviously, Aldean is singing to Americans.
People in the U.S.A. and around the world, who don’t allow themselves to be spoonfed by your everyday lemming.
Duplicitous journalism is still speaking with a split tongue.
Best when you get on a horse, to not ride him facing the rear end.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:54 pm
Nah, most of America doesn’t agree with your bullshit either.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:57 pm
: D Keep telling yourself that.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:17 am
CMT pulling the video isn’t surprising. They have sold out country values years ago.
July 21, 2023 @ 1:00 am
Nothing says “country values” like paying 5 songwriters to write a song about a life you’ve never experienced as a defense for your wife’s comments on Instagram. What country values does Aldean’s song have?
July 19, 2023 @ 9:19 am
A better political song is “I’m Just Sayin'” by Austin Moody.
That song nailed it. Song of the Year material.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:37 am
Margo Price sucks.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:38 am
COURTHOUSE IS LYNCH GALLOWS
COLUMBIA, Tenn., Nov. 12–A courthouse balcony became a gallows when Henry Choate, 18-year-old negro accused of attacking a white girl, was hanged by a mob here yesterday. One end of the rope was fixed around Choate’s neck and the other end secured to a balustrade. Choate was then thrown over the side. The courthouse was festooned with red, white and blue bunting for yesterday’s Armistice Day celebration.
New York World, November 12, 1927
that pretty much sums up the song, huh? we’re small town america, proud of it, and we will take you down if we disagree with you.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:06 am
Your last paragraph perfectly describes the lefts mentality when it comes to literally anything they deem to be against their hive mind narrative. Just replace “small town” with “Big city.”
July 19, 2023 @ 11:09 am
which lefts song is about a mob taking the law into their own hands and violently taking care of someone? lmao
July 21, 2023 @ 1:03 am
And yet conservative Aldean and his wife are the ones crying about it on social media. Nothing says “hive mind” like paying someone to write a song because your wife got made fun of online and can’t handle it.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:42 pm
“that pretty much sums up the song, huh? we’re small town america, proud of it, and we will take you down if we disagree with you.”
Congratulations thegentile on being either willfully obtuse or a total demagogue.
The song isn’t about “differences of opinion.”
You’re smart enough to know that, but it doesn’t stop you.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:48 am
This is “pro-lynching” just like that florida bill made it illegal to say gay. It’s all so tiresome.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:00 am
But the idea that there is no crime in small town America, that there isn’t random violence, or even anti-American sentiment is just pure fantasy.
Absolutely correct. Google the names Reagan Hancock and Mark Collins for some interesting light reading.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:08 am
Politics aside (I don’t agree with Jason on some things but that’s okay) and production aside (it’s awful), I hate how the song is built around a threat. The song just feeds into the idea that it’s Us vs. Them with no room for nuance, discussion or compromise. The “I recommend you don’t” line especially just rubs me the wrong way.
Not every political song needs to be about coming together. I’d take no issue if Jason wanted to cut a song about the loss of American values that he perceives. But instead cut one saying “this is how I feel, and you better not disagree otherwise we’re going to have an issue.”
July 19, 2023 @ 10:24 am
Typo at the end. It should have read:
“But instead he* cut one saying…”
July 19, 2023 @ 12:08 pm
Do you take issue with the liberal country artists who espouse their viewpoint in song? Isbell and Karen Morris and Margo all include pointed political sloganeering in their songs too. Isbell even released an album all about Georgia turning blue. In fact he released it because Georgia turned blue, saying I will release it if we flip Georgia. That doesnt seem very reaching across the aisles and accepting of everyone viewpoints to me either. All you have to do is read Isbells twitter. He said he wasnt interested in having red staters as fans. You have to be able to condemn all as bad in that regard Tom C. If you want people bringing people together, and slam Aldean for division, you gotta be able to call it out when liberals and those you agree with do it. Otherwise you are a hypocrite. Mickey and Isbell whenever theres some horrible shooting, or Morgan gets in trouble they run to twitter to say how racist and fascist Nashville is. Funny they dont seem to say that when they cash checks from that same industry. But they have been silent about Jimmie Allen’s controversy. You know ddamn well if that was Morgan or Aldean or Aaron Lewis in that situation Mickey and Karen Morris and Isbell would be saying how the industry is an evil patriarchy. Why arent they slamming Jimmie in their tweets or setting up funds to help his victims? They are grifters and political hacks, thats why. Rules for thee and not for me.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:25 pm
this is definitely aldean’s wife’s handle. lmao.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:46 pm
I’m not so familiar with Mickey or Maren Morris’ music so I won’t comment on that.
Most of Isbell’s political songs are at least thought-provoking and respectful. His twitter page has crossed the line at time and I don’t agree with him when he does that. And if Aldean made a turning George red album, that’s fine with me too.
Like I said, NOT every political song needs to be about coming together. I have no issue if Aldean releases 10 singles about small town values or republican talking points. My issue is with the implied threat of violence.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:26 pm
If someone was going to burn and riot in my town, then no, I don’t there there is “room for nuance, discussion or compromise”
July 19, 2023 @ 12:50 pm
Most of the burning and looting occurred in cities. I live in New York and saw much of it (though it was not as bad here as other cities). We had a curfew at 8pm for multiple days. It was wrong and ridiculous.
Like I said in other comments though, my issue with Aldean’s song is about the implied threat of responding with violence. He could have made his point without resorting to that.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:08 am
Everyone should probably just ignore Aldean and his shitty music.
And isn’t just like corporate media to tell us we should give a rat’s ass what some “celebrity” thinks or has to say? Who freaking cares? People on the Left put entirely too much emphasis on what Hollywood-types do and say.
Out here in the real world? We don’t give a fuck. We think critically and make up our own minds. Which leads me to this: This is a shitty rock and roll song.
July 19, 2023 @ 6:19 pm
Except the mainstream media isn’t telling you to give a rat’s ass. They are just reporting on the people who are telling you to give a rat’s ass. That’s their job. The reaction is news, whether you like it or not.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:09 am
Well, I tried sitting through the video so I could form an opinion based on the song/lyrics/video and not on pundits, defenders or haters. But I couldn’t make it more than 30 seconds in. What a crappy song – that ain’t even country. So no matter the controversy, the song sux. That’s all the opinion I have – or care to have.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:09 am
Very good, as expected. I wonder if the four writers knew exactly what they were doing. Perhaps they will try to back away from the song, although I fear their mortgages will disagree.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:10 am
This definitely has become a viral hit due to both the baiting video as well as elite think tank circlejerking.
This definitely won’t make it a #1 hit on country radio, however.
For one: “Try It In A Small Town” is actually having one of Aldean’s slowest starts for a lead single to date. The video definitely gave it relevance, but as a stand-alone song it’s rather tuneless and doesn’t have a driving melody or hook to go the distance.
Secondly: this isn’t 2004. The country radio listening demographic has shifted markedly since then. For years on end now mainstream listeners have been inundated with idyllic, pretty much panglossian, shiny ditties about country livin’ primarily marketed to suburban Americans: who don’t actually reside in rural America but pine for a sweet escape from the helter-skelter of modern life. They turn to country radio to vicariously bask in that fantasy. A track like this would be too jarring and off-putting for that core listening demographic and I think this track will ultimately hit a brick wall soon below the Top 15 on the airplay chart.
“Try This In A Small Town” will probably inspire clones of this same sentiment in plentiful more upcoming songs that will also go viral…………..but it’ll take time for it to go easier down listeners’ ears. It’s too abrupt and jarring a blip for them now.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:25 am
It was the “Most Added” on country radio when it was first released. Perhaps because of the controversy, It might be kept off of #1 on radio. But it is most certainly headed to #1 on Hot Country Songs. If Arron Lewis got to #1 with “Am I The Only One,” this song will too.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:38 am
I don’t see it going #1 on the Hot Country Songs chart either.
Aaron Lewis’ song benefitted from it being released BEFORE the recent seismic shift in streaming data influencing lengthy runs of dominance on the airplay chart among the heavy-hitters (“Last Night”, “Fast Car”, “Rock & A Hard Place” most notably).
For “Try It In A Small town” to top “Last Night”, “Fast Car”, “Need A Favor”, etc. on the Billboard Hot 100 (and, thus, the Hot Country Songs chart) on ANY given week……………it’s going to HAVE to have not just over-the-moon streams eclipsing that of the aforementioned songs, as well as some crossover airplay. And that’s simply not going to happen.
The era of the rotating door #1 at country radio week-to-week is over. Labels aren’t going to play gentleman anymore, and that’s why we’ve been seeing “Rock & A Hard Place”, “Last Night” and “Fast Car” denying countless singles #1 on either chart at country radio. The same will apply to this song and its hopes of getting anywhere further than #6 or so on the Hot Country Songs chart.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:53 am
Good point. It could be kept out of #1 by “Last Night,” “Fast Car,” and whatever the next viral song might be. But even if it doesn’t hit #1, I think it will be a “hit.” You’re already seeing the backlash to the backlash come out in full force. It will be interesting to see where it lands.
Also, I do think it will inspire clones. Aaron Lewis and John Rich can release these kinds of songs if they want, but I’m not sure how relevant they are. Jason Aldean has a hit with one, it could open the floodgates. We all know that mainstream country music is a copycat business.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:05 am
Yeah, there’s no denying the backlash has given this the relevance it was lacking during the first two months of its run, and the elite circlejerking only have themselves to blame for that.
That said, Aaron Lewis was the direct beneficiary of much weaker chart competition two years ago. In contrast, country music is currently at its most dominant run commercially in 42 years according to Billboard Hot 100 data (there’s little country about both “Last Night” and Combs’ cover of “Fast Car” obviously, but the point still stands country is at a current peak of crossover appeal) . So Aldean is probably going to have to settle for a #6 peak or so, scraping the bottom of the Top Five at best.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:21 am
Why was my comment removed?
July 19, 2023 @ 10:26 am
because you’re a bigot.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:32 am
That explains it. Thanks.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:26 am
The biggest bigot calling someone a bigot is a prime sign of how crazy this world has become.
Remember folks, thegentile’s version of a bigot is anyone who doesn’t agree with him/her/it/them/they/zir on every topic.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:12 pm
actually my version is pretty textbook. you know, those things other people read while in school.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:17 pm
Precisely. Aldean asks for criminals to be dealt with and somehow that gets his message pulled. Why would that be controversial or upsetting to people. It’s because for years now the leftists have suggested prisons are racist, black people getting in any legal trouble is racist, the cop is racist, the judge is racist, and the jury probably is too and that we need to abolish cops. These are the most selfish and insane political ideas ever foisted on the American people. Remember what happened during the summer of Fentanyl Floyd? Instead of putting down the criminals like we all wanted, the cops kneeled. And arrested people not wearing masks or gathering in groups during the China Virus. I dont blame the cops either, they were forced to act this way by insane lockdownerists in the Governors of blue states and cities. The idea that we should deal harshly with criminals shouldn’t be a controversial issue. The people, the murderers of little Secoria Turner, and Cannon Hinnant, or officer David Dorn, and the terrorists who took over cities all of 2020 arent dealt with severely, swiftly and appropriately we have lost our way as a society. You need to deal with crime, all crime in cities, and systematically root it out. Force it out so it can no longer fester and grow.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:20 am
You clearly skipped the textbook on capitalization and punctuation.

Am permanently on the moderation list.

You dodged on what exactly he wrote. Interesting. Put up or shut up.

Charlie Daniels did it better with “Simple Man” in 1989 anyway lol.
July 19, 2023 @ 10:28 am
Charlie Daniels did this same thing far better with “Simple Man” back in 1989 anyways
July 19, 2023 @ 10:49 am
Ultimately, defending yourself is the core of being respected (or American). If you’re comparing Aldean to Isbell…ask yourself…which one would you realistically expect to defend himself (or whatever pronoun Isbell thinks is trendy)? Nothing wrong with telling assholes to leave you alone, so for the message, I’ve got to go with Aldean…plus his wife is waaay hotter.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:00 pm
Defending yourself is the core of being respected?
Isn’t the most respected man in the history of the world famous for saying if someone slaps you on one cheek, offer him the other, and pray for those who hate you?
(PS- I’m not a Christian, but I think it’s odd to make self-defense the central part of American identity when, you know, Jesus had the opposite perspective.)
July 20, 2023 @ 4:02 am
The same Jesus that advised his disciple to sell his cloak and buy a sword…is that the on you speak of?
July 20, 2023 @ 5:20 am
1. Jesus was mostly DISRESPECTED. 2. Jesus advised jisbdisciple to sell his cloak and use the money to arm himself. This is how it appears in the KJV. Are you using a differwnt translation?
July 20, 2023 @ 6:52 am
Good morning. I was referring to the Sermon on the Mount as in Matthew chapter 5 and Luke chapter 6.
By respected I meant that the biggest religion in the world is centered on a man who said turn the other cheek and love your enemies, again as in the chapters referenced above. The song we are discussing seems at odds with those ideas. But YMMV.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:06 am
Always love when non-Christians try to “shame” Christians by quoting Jesus.
It is nothing special or new. The Devil quoted Scripture as well.
July 21, 2023 @ 6:07 am
but the devil is cool. way better band shirts.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:27 am
To the people who consider the song offensive:
Do you consider rap that promotes violence, gun worship, gang culture, antisocial behavior, drug use to be equally offensive, offing rival gangs, glorification of wealth, or is it just select genres and groups that raise your ire? This song has none of those elements. It promotes law and order, respecting police and authority, respect for community and town, and following lawful orders when an authority figure tells you.
Do you consider WAP to be offensive and overt sexual content in songs? This song has none of that, theres nothing in it thats sexually explicit, or explicit in any other manner.
Do you consider Karen Morris, Isbell, Mickey, Sturgill or Margo to be offensive since they inflict their political viewpoint not only on twitter and in all their interviews but also include the nauseating message in songs? Or is it just one side of the political aisle that is allowed to express their political viewpoints in music?
If Jason had named this song something like we chase out fascists and racists from our city and talked about how socialism and rioting is the answer to overthrowing the fascist government would you still object to it? Or is that message acceptable because it fits your political ideology.
I voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020, and will do the same in 2024. I expect Jason and Brittney will do the same. I make no apologies for being a redstater and a proud supporter of Blue Lives Matter and All Lives Matter.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:58 pm
I’ll respond to each one of your questions…
1. Yes, which is why I pretty much avoid hip hop and explicit rap.
2. Yes, which is why I don’t listen to that song.
3. No I don’t, because you are missing one key difference. Their songs–or what I’ve heard of them– are not endorsing the use of physical violence. Aldean’s song does. And for the record, I’m not accusing Aldean of racist because I don’t view this song as a race thing. But the song is clearly advocating violence, which it what I am against.
4. You’re equating socialism and rioting, which is absolutely ignorant. The two are not anywhere near the same thing. Go to Finland, Sweden, Canada, Argentina, Denmark, where there is Democratic Socialism. They’re not rioting in the streets.
5. You vote for who you want…we can debate that civilly. But this song is not about civil discourse.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:47 pm
That’s the third time you’ve used “Karen” Morris. Did you come up with that hilarious missive all by yourself?
July 19, 2023 @ 11:29 am
I first want to say that that I agree with the other Craigs. Second Trig I think that you make a great point that my mother use to make all the time: that living in the inner city or small town America can be the same depending on who you are, and where you live. Americans need to see this fact clear because then it would not be about ” wokeness” but the unity to make us a country of peace and love. What I hate about Aldean’s song is there is no country spirit of unity and family, and solving a problem to move forward. You don’t have to be liberal or conservative to understand that Jason Aldean is a hack performer without a cup of real talent who has been coasting along on attitude, ” good ole boy ” bs, and an inability to see the forest for the trees. First he didn’t want to be political and now is, he couldn’t id different female singers but has now sung with three of them, he disrespected Zac Brown’s freedom of speech but gets his panties in a bunch when his wife’s is brought into question. I always go back to an interview he gave in which he stated he hadn’t read a book since high school. Is it a surprise that he is what he is now? If he were a smarter better man he would have picked a smarter better song.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:33 am
The historical incident at the courthouse is regrettable and inexcusable, but what are we supposed to do now? Not do anything there for all eternity? What is next: not filming in a state because the same kind of incident happened?
What was Aldean’s party supposed to do? In-depth research on every possible courthouse in the area? Remember they were probably trying to find one that looked good and was close enough for a quick shoot. They don’t have all the time in the world.
Criticize the song. Criticize the lyrics. But where they lose people is when they try to contrive the craziest connections in their ongoing cultural genocide of anything American.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:56 am
lol. you want to shoot a sitcom elopement scene at the courthouse? go for it. sing a song about pro-mob violence and taking the law into your own hand where that actually happened? maybe don’t.
do y’all not have google in tennessee?
July 20, 2023 @ 9:09 am
I am from the North, Miss Stereotype.
Fact is, they could have shot the video at any courthouse in America, and your side would have written the same article.
July 20, 2023 @ 11:35 am
lol i don’t care where you are from, jason aldean and his team are from tennessee. believe it or not, it’s not all about you lil guy.
do you know what a ‘fact’ is? it sure isn’t pure speculation.
July 20, 2023 @ 1:48 pm
You said “y’all.” That was a clear reference to myself.
Either way, does anything involving that courthouse for the rest of time automatically become “pro-lynching?”
It is a fact that your side claims anything they hate is “racist.”
July 21, 2023 @ 1:10 pm
“You said “y’all.” That was a clear reference to myself.”
for a guy that gets pretty riled up about they/them pronouns, you should know that y’all is short for “you all”.
“Either way, does anything involving that courthouse for the rest of time automatically become “pro-lynching?””
please see my previous comment that you replied to where i say it obviously does not. here it is for easy reference:
“you want to shoot a sitcom elopement scene at the courthouse? go for it. sing a song about pro-mob violence and taking the law into your own hand where that actually happened? maybe don’t.”
July 19, 2023 @ 11:38 am
CMT cucked not because of the content of the song, but rather because they don’t want the truth getting out. The truth is the Summer of Love 2020 riots were deadly, and deeply evil. Remember CHAZ/CHOP? They don’t want you to remember the events of May 29th either, where people nearly stormed the White House and actually set fire to multiple guard posts. Trump had to be evacuated to the basement for his safety. They burned down St Johns Church one of the oldest churches in the nation. They dont want the wider public aware of these events. Of Scoria Turner murdered by BLM terrorists, an 8 year old black girl. Jason’s message resonates. Thats why it went #1. People are sick of the woke SJW crap fed to us by Nashville and the industry currently. And the song deals with how the Summer of 2020 should have unfolded. Trump, and the DOJ should have immediately deputized all cops, and made arrests, thrown them in prison, and thrown away the key. The police should have dealt with the riots with absolute force. You riot during the Summer of Love you are thrown out of the country, just as we would deal with someone who is ISIS or AlQaeda. Jasons vision of how we would have dealt with the riots is correct and I support it. They dont want the truth getting out that the Summer of Love 2020 was pure unadulterated evil. I support all police in doing what needs to be done to stomp the riots and restore law and order. Law and order must be maintained. And if that means tackling some moron throwing rocks at cops, then so be it. Law and order wlll be maintained in society.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:40 am
I am a right wing person. Aldean is a poser. People supporting him should be ashamed. He’s just jumping on a political bandwagon.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:06 pm
Which right wing country artists are you a fan of that do it better?
July 19, 2023 @ 2:17 pm
Travis Tritt is a real act and I usually agree with him. He also sings country music. I am going to pass trash such as “Burning it Down” or “Dirt Road Anthem” to you. That’s the kind of corporate country garbage you probably listen to. But yeah Aldean is acting like a great patriot now so hurry up and support this clown.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:43 am
“But after the incessant attacks on his wife for asserting her 1st Amendment rights on social media”
Please show me where the government restricted her speech.
Anyways, rest of review is pretty spot on and the best thing for Aldean is for the media outrage because it will push a shitty song to #1 and will bless the rest of us with cringe tik tok videos people will make using this song when majority of them probably couldn’t even change a flat tire nor know that “Tennessee Whiskey” isn’t a Chris Stapleton song
July 19, 2023 @ 12:18 pm
I didn’t say anyone restricted Brittany Aldean’s speech, but there were probably a good dozen articles basically trying to tie her sentiments to the entirety of country music even though she’s only an artist’s wife, and actively tried to shame her into silence at the time. This whole cycle started when Mrs. Aldean started selling anti-Biden T-shirts shortly after the withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the killing of 13 servicemebers in that action. Criticizing the President of the United States is the essence of the 1st Amendment. At the time, it wasn’t even a fringe sentiment because Biden’s approval was south of 40%.
This all is why I’m making such a big deal about the media’s role in all of this, because it’s vital to understanding they dynamics of what is happening. When Brittany Aldean started speaking out with right-leaning viewpoints, she HAD to be attacked, admonished, and stifled, because the entire game here by some activist journalists and academics is to get country artists to speak out for left-leaning causes. Brittany Aldean posed an existential threat to their plan, and needed to be admonished and discredited with full-throat vehemence.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:25 pm
You literally posted about her 1st amendment rights which only applies to the government.
She can say whatever on a private platform, same as I can here, but she can’t get mad if she gets booted (again like I can’t here) for what she says. It was just a poor choice of wording as people think 1st amendment means free speech everywhere when it doesn’t, just against the government.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:42 pm
Ugh, I hate this semantic argument. The reason I said 1st Amendment is because she was criticizing the President, which is her right protected by the 1st Amendment. I understnad the government wasn’t involved, though as we know now, multiple government agencies have worked hand in hand with social media companies to stifle private speech as well, and there are currently numerous lawsuits and investigations involving this very thing.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:49 pm
I’ll just say “fair” on the semantics call.
The second part doesn’t apply to this particular case but is a valid concern and completely should be unconstitutional. At the end of the day I think we can agree with your overall sentiment “the media made a mountain of a mole hill” by trying to nit pick shit
July 19, 2023 @ 11:50 am
As a person from Appalachia, I have no sympathy for people in my region that are meth heads and don’t strive for a better life. They are rednecks and dope heads. Just as much, I have no sympathy for the blacks in ghettos that don’t try to get an education and better their lives. They are thugs and criminals. Blacks are 13% of the population and commit over 50% of violent crime and disproportionally suck up welfare and other govt. assistance . These are all facts, and to deny the problems and scream racism is denying reality. Jason Aldean is no racist. Shame on this website for allowing people to make that unsubstantiated claim. It’s a scumbag thing to do and makes things worse. It’s just clickbait.
July 22, 2023 @ 9:06 am
Careful with those hate facts there, buddy. You wouldn’t want to commit that most notorious of sins in 2023 America: possessing the ability to discern patterns in order to protect yourself and your family from harm.
Longtime lurker, and first-time poster. I’ve gotta say that I’m stupified there are as many hateful, bigoted anti-whites commenting on a COUNTRY (read rural, largely Scots-Irish roots) music site There are posters on here that are absolutely undistinguishable from the most genocidal Robin DiAngelo or Ibram X. Kendi type of look. The kinda people who won’t be happy unless the last white man on earth is crying “but I’m not a racist” while a ghetto thug stomps his brains out.
If country music consists of soulless “fans” like this now, or idiots like Isbell, Price, etc, it’s not even worth saving. I’ll just listen to my Merle and Bocephus’ and Hank Snow albums while this lousy “country” music burns down with the once-great country it used to represent.
Signed: a proud Southern man with English, Scottish, and Dixian roots going back nearly 400 years here.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:52 am
I am for this song 1,000%. Artistic expression. The liberal entertainers do it. Why not the more conservative ones? Oh yeah, the liberal free speech hypocrisy alive and well.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:58 am
It’s annoying because a lot of people have an opinion of country music and the people that like it, and garbage like this just confirms it in their eyes.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:14 pm
As opposed to hip hop and rap music. That openly denigrated women as how’s and bitches and promotes thuggery and gang banging. Espousing law and order and defending decency is far worse I suppose. What a stupid assertion that the overwhelming opinion of country artists is worse than rappers and hip hop thugs. I don’t hear Alsean or any other mainstream country artists calling women whores and bitches and promoting thuggery.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:11 pm
Who even mentioned hip hop?!
July 20, 2023 @ 11:06 pm

July 20, 2023 @ 11:29 pm
This is a terrible article in a growing list of them. It makes no salient point or counter-argument as to why citing the violent lyrics of hip-hop is unfair or irrelevant in this case. It just says it’s an “old play.” Okay, well maybe that’s because it’s a good play and effective at pointing out the hypocrisy.
Perhaps the writer could have talked about how Black hip-hop artists see disproportionately more violence while growing up, or face socioeconomic struggles that someone like Jason Aldean doesn’t, making their articulation of violence in their lyrics more relevant and poignant. Instead, it’s basically saying “I have the moral high ground here, don’t really need to explain my case, and so case closed.”
This is why I started this article off talking about the media. The media is where this battle is going to be fought. It’s also going to be where Jason Aldean will win if they continue to resort to hyperbole, ad hominem attacks, and whatever kind of Tweet idea expanded into a 3-minute article this is.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:14 pm
You’re right. We need more people like Kelsea doing songs with men in dresses with fake tits. That’ll show the world how smart we are.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:04 pm
Jason Aldean has raised millions of dollars for breast cancer and children’s charities. All you idiots that criticize him have probably done very little to make the world a better place. I bet that he raised all this money under the condition that no black ladies or kids benefit. He makes mostly crappy music, but he doesn’t deserve vitriol for BBC a C song that represents how a huge portion of America feels. We are tired of seeing thuggery from all races. Our cities can’t even keep the shit and needles off the sidewalks and businesses are leaving in droves because of idiot ideas from left wing nut jobs.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:13 pm
“Jason Aldean has raised millions of dollars for breast cancer and children’s charities.”
so has the nfl, but i thought we boycotted that out of existence because of kneeling or something…? can’t remember.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:50 pm
I didn’t claim to boycott anything. Nobody is claiming to boycott the NFL on the grounds they are racist. A political disagreement is far different than calling a man a racist with zero, real proof. Not liking the message of his shitty song doesn’t make him a racist. Use your head to think logically and to be fair to him.

July 19, 2023 @ 12:26 pm
I feel it’s a flawed assumption to think that Alden, Aaron Lewis, Isbell and Secor are pandering to their bases. I feel they are absolutely expressing their views. There is one big difference. Only one side is calling for vigilante justice. Also to be noted, the Alden video showed the BLM rioters and not the peaceful marchers.. There were peaceful protests in my small town and many in towns around the country. They just weren’t worthy of news coverage from the 24/7 cable networks. If Aldean intended to paint an accurate view of his sadness about the divisiveness in the country, he could included some footage from January 6th or other violent actions from right leaning people/groups.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:31 pm
I agree. You could also bring up stories of places like Bellevue and Everett WA where armed citizens kept rioters out of their neighborhoods.
July 19, 2023 @ 12:48 pm
True but I feel that law enforcement should be doing the enforcement and not primary citizens. Aldean says that if you burn the flag you won’t get far down the road. That’s vigilante justice not to mention it’s for a constitutionally protected right in our country
July 19, 2023 @ 12:54 pm
That’s exactly what he’s criticizing. Those thugs were participating in anarchy and not letting the police do their jobs. He’s saying that at some point people have to defend their possessions, businesses, etc. Another ridiculous comment. Use your head to think logically! Public schools suck, but surely they aren’t this bad..
July 19, 2023 @ 1:07 pm
So we’re the January 6th rioters, but no footage of them in the video
July 19, 2023 @ 12:43 pm
BLM B and Antifa are thugs promoting violence and chaos. They don’t give a damn about black people. To protest peacefully is the norm. His song is about those that breach that norm; there’s no reason to show peaceful protests in the context of the song. It makes no sense, he’s not be a journalist trying to tell the wholistic story of those events. It’s a ridiculous suggestion and he has no obligation to do it. The song is awful, but left wing nut jobs have made it the number one song in America because decent people are tired of the damn stupidity.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:10 pm
Yeah you’re calling a movement “thugs” just because they don’t want black people murdered by police. Everyone can see how much you hate black people lmao
July 19, 2023 @ 2:42 pm
Antifa are thugs because they commit arson and assault. BLM just gave them a vehicle. It is a fact, not a racist comment. If you don’t understand this you are ignorant. Read up on the French and Russian revolutions to see how idealists that started the movements were swept aside by psychopathic murderers. Once you see where this could lead to, you might understand why 50% of this country doesn’t like it.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:53 pm
“Once you see where this could lead to, you might understand why 50% of this country doesn’t like it.”
Oh it’s much more than 50%.
50% is the statistic the hoodlums love to throw out.
They think it gives them clout, makes them respectable.
Just like the world watching the absolute circus coming out of Wuhan, Beijing, & D.C.
Yeah, they sure are pulling the wool …
July 19, 2023 @ 4:50 pm
They absolutely are thugs. Were you alive during the 2020 Summer riots? The behavior exhibited by those people, and it was both black and white people, was absolutely disgraceful. If you are upset about the murder of black people, rioting isnt the answer. That just shows you are a criminal anyways. Plus the thinking was backwards anyways. You dont like black people being grouped as criminals when not everyone is. So you in turn label all police as evil and suggest we abolish police altogether. Make it make sense. Certainly, the way to get your message to reach the middle, the independents, the people who can do something to help, is to commit widespread vandalism, theft, looting, and arson. They are absolutely thugs. Just because you believe a police officer is racist (without evidence, lets be clear), that doesnt give you the right or authority to take over entire neighborhoods, or to bust out Starbucks windows or loot Target. The people who always go, it’s just people who are poor trying to survive, man. It’s like, no. No thats not what it is. You dont need to steal electronics from Target to survive if you are living paycheck to paycheck. You work and save up just like the rest of us had to, to purchase those items. Suggesting you are owed them as reparations or that you can commit arson because you are pissed off about racism is ridiculous.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:33 pm
I’ll keep expressing my view and you should too. I just hope I can express mine without the threat of citizen vigilantes coming after me
July 19, 2023 @ 5:38 pm
“Only one side is calling for vigilante justice.”
Vigilante justice is revenge.
This song is not about revenge. It’s about defense.
Try this thought experiment. Do you think people in small towns should just lie down, be still, and take it? That eventually police will arrive and justice will prevail at some point? So our best course of action is to suffer, let innocents be harmed, wait submissively, and be patient?
It’s amazing anyone could think that represents a moral position. Do you?
July 20, 2023 @ 7:16 am
Beating someone for burning the flag is most certainly not defense.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:23 am
If someone burns the American flag while i’m around, we will be having a discussion.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:48 am
You can have whatever discussion you want. I don’t agree with burning the flag either, but I recognize it’s a constitutional right to do so, and I’m certainly not going to act like a child and attack someone for doing so. Still don’t know how you could see it as defense to do so.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:55 am
Where did i say would attack someone for burning the American flag?
July 24, 2023 @ 1:17 pm
Adam, where in the song does it say the small towners will “beat” a person who burns an American flag?
Why do people attacking this song ignore the plain words of its lyrics? It’s not like they’re complicated or even long. I realize attention spans are shrinking and young people often find it difficult to follow a train of thought, but is there some more obvious reason? Maybe it’s the fact that those who perpetrated the lynching in front of the courthouse a hundred or so years ago were Democrats? The guilt? But that’s probably too psychomological.
I’m going with “Aldean likes Trump, so lalalalalala I can’t hear you, arf arf arf arf!!!”
July 24, 2023 @ 2:13 pm
If you can’t understand the implication for violence if someone did the things in his list of wrongs, I can’t help you.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:08 pm
He’s racist because he made a song about shooting black protestors and a video where he sang in front of a building famous for lynching. Who cares if he donated to some unrelated charity? The proof is that the song and video are openly racist. You know this, don’t pretend to be ignorant.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:24 pm
You can say anything you want, but it doesn’t make it true. He didn’t make a video about shooting black people. That statement proves you are an idiot.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:10 pm
Daily Beast just dropped a predictably whinny op-ed on Aldean’s, “pro-lynching” song.
Shame on you Shari Redstone.

uh oh. she better not try to hide in a small town.
lmao. you guys.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:31 pm
She better watch her back, Di Harris is onto her lol. No chance Redstone’s time is up because of this.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:10 pm
: D Not Just because of this …
July 19, 2023 @ 1:16 pm
I like Colter’s approach in “Standing Here”: “I’m crying for my country.” And better, if you’re a praying person, pray for your country.
People who are really ready to defend their homes and families in an emergency tend not to advertise it to the general public.
Look up the laws in your state. Read about some cases. What will actually happen if you pull some vigilante sh*t?
July 19, 2023 @ 1:36 pm
And you know this how? Many people proudly let others know they will defend their home. It stops the thuggery because the thugs are cowards looking for easy targets. They just want their dope money. You are sadly misinformed. It’s a good thing you probably aren’t a house robber or a BLM thug trying to rob a store. You can bet your ass that if BLM and/or Antifa thugs show up in my small town tearing down the doors of businesses and burning them, they will be met with gunfire and our police will support it. Google the Sheriff Grady in Florida. There are many more just like him that don’t get the publicity he does.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:44 pm
“florida”
whelp, that explains it.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:38 pm
Yeah, yeah…
I’m not misinformed. Love your neighbor. Be smart. Your local police are not the only law enforcement.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:19 pm
I scrolled up and saw you’re from Appalachia. Unless you live in Asheville, you’re probably factually correct in what you’re saying.
We’re both probably just generalizing based on our respective environments. We all forget how big a country this is, hence all the dumb comments on this thread, mine included.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:33 pm
are we sure that’s even real footage in the video and not just jason aldean in blackface again?
July 19, 2023 @ 3:13 pm
Oh, you meant Jimmy Fallon in blackface again.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:20 pm
No, Jason Aldean was caught in blackface too. That story was broken here on Saving Country Music.
https://savingcountrymusic.com/jason-aldean-wore-blackface-as-part-of-his-2015-halloween-costume/
July 19, 2023 @ 3:46 pm
: D Ok.
Fair enough.
So was Jimmy Fallon.
I hardly think either of these men meant it as harmful.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:58 pm
lol. more of a letterman guy myself.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:35 pm
Most of you are are thinking way too far into this. It’s a shitty song all around…certainly musically, and lyrically it’s completely trite and totally dated in its subject matter (the riots have been over for a while now, so the threat of them coming to a “small town” near you is essentially non-existent). Everyone can agree on that fact.
Anyone with half a brain realizes that the main reason there weren’t larger protests or riots in “small towns” in 2020 is mostly a game of numbers…there aren’t nearly as many “leftist” folks living in small towns, so it’s much harder to reach a critical mass of radical local folks who want to cause destruction….. and those who were traveling from all over the country (which most of the violent anarchist basement dwellers in these groups did) are unlikely to pick a small rural town that’s unlikely to draw a big group of radical protesters. You need large numbers, and many potential “targets” if you are going to effectively pull off a destructive riot.
Also, there certainly were smaller BLM protests all over the nation, including in smaller towns back in 2020. It’s just that the majority of the media coverage was focused on the larger towns that attracted the bigger and more out of control protests / riots.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:45 pm
Not really. The mainstream media in 2020 during early days of the China Virus, called the protestors at Witchmores Michigan capitol as being terrorists. You were arrested for merely going to the beach or the park. Those protests were peaceful. When Fentanyl Floyd died, the riots of BLM took over and were out of control. It was the most destructive riot in American History. The famous image of a CNN scrawl saying “Fiery but mostly peaceful” as flames lick the screen and smoke rises. They burnt down Wendy’s for gods sake, what the hell does that have to do with racism? These riots were excused, egged on, cheered, and suggested they were acceptable because racism and racist cops are a problem, even though cops kill 9 unarmed black people a year, in a nation of 300 million. Hardly a problem. This went on for 9 months. In Portland you had rioters trying to burn down the federal courthouse, and when DOJ meekly sent in some show of force, people acted like it was the Gestapo. My god, how dare they take rioters away in unmarked vehicles to god knows where after they threw cement at a cop or burned a police station down. In Portland they superglued the doors of the police station, and set fire to it, with the police still inside. We all saw the murder of David Dorn on camera, on livestream. That isnt a protest Billy Wayne and they weren’t small. They were wildly out of control, violent, unhinged and deadly. Rioters took over an entire city block in Seattle. What would happen if MAGA took over a city block in Detroit? When you act like animals and fllth, and raise cain in the streets for 9 months in 2020, dont be surprised if people feels some type of way about it and want it completely eradicated from American life. Throwing rocks into a Starbucks window or smashing a cop car, or setting fireworks off next to people isnt some revolutionary act. It’s the behavior of cretins and criminals. Police need to be able to do what is necessary to deal with terrorist cells. I feel no sympathy for the Antifa member slammed to the ground by a cop after they just committed an act of violence. That isnt protesting. Thats a riot.
July 20, 2023 @ 12:00 pm
Not sure you actually read my post before responding, but Ok.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:40 pm
I applaud Jason Aldean for standing up for what is right.
And, he wasn’t the first one who did this. Many Aaron Tippin songs feel political, and let’s not forget Darryl Worley in 2002 and of course, Hank Jr.
I respect the artists who never mention politics at all, as yes, it can be dividing. But CMT’s ban says everything about CMT and nothing at all about Jason Aldean. And yes, I did boycott the Dixie Chicks back then. And for those that feel that this makes me a hypocrite, oh well.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:42 pm
I have literally never heard a Jason Aldean song. If you don’t like something don’t listen to it. I am sure lots of us listen to songs with questionable content. My favorite artist is David Allan Coe, are some of his lyrics questionable? Hell yeah they are, do I care? Not one bit, I listen to his songs I like, skip the other ones.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:49 pm
I have a big issue with this small town thing. Its still a town, still suburbia.
Now, had he said “try this on a farm” and talk about how black bulls matter, especially in choosing a place to riot, then that would be good.
Then you could make a hilarious video of a bunch of hipsters getting chased by a bull.
I’m not here to tell people what they need to do, but i can tell you that if your day involves more animals than people, you’re likely to be happier.
Also, it meant lockdown didn’t affect us much.
I’ll go back to listening to Colter Wall sing about cows. They are starting to seem intelligent. And tasty.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:57 pm
I’ve seen plenty of cows outsmart a cowboy! At least the new guys. Haha.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:54 pm
Very well written. Aldean is tone deaf and probably oblivious to any history. I believe he is more an opportunist, than a calculating racist, or just a moron.
I filmed a video in Maud Oklahoma for my song Belly. 100 years ago two native teenager were lynched there. It is kinda hard to avoid history, even in a small town. However, I didn’t include news clips, stoking a fire.

July 19, 2023 @ 2:33 pm
He’s a moron, but he figured a way out to make it in country music, in a big way. He could look at you and think you are a moron because you couldn’t be as successful as him. It’s all about perspective. Like most, I’m sure the system is against you, or you weren’t willing to sell your soul for fame. Maybe you’re just mediocre (like me) or don’t have the charisma. I don’t know. But, your comment seems to have some jealousy attached to it. Don’t be jealous of those that succeed, be happy for them and maybe that karma will come back to you!
July 19, 2023 @ 2:45 pm
Absolutely no jealousy. I do not envy the scrutiny. I am perfectly content with my art and ability. I was just highlighting the fact that America has a long brutal history, that you can’t get away from. Even in a small town.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:55 pm
Hey Trig,
I wanted to get away from the specific drama behind this song and talk about the bigger picture of songs like this. I’ve read from you and other before that culture war songs like this are marketed towards suburbanites, and I have generally agreed in the past. I hope I haven’t mischaracterized anything you have said in the past.
But the older I get, the more I think it is marketed towards the small town person as well, just in a different way. For the suburbanites, it projects the image of a place that don’t live in and think they do. I’ve seen plenty of that in my life.
I have been fortunate enough to live in “rural” America my entire life, working in agriculture in some capacity. Even now as a high school teacher. I can tell you my anecdotal experience is that my students and their families love these songs.
I live in a relatively small farming community now. It has an incredibly low crime rate. People here leave their doors unlocked, people know each other’s names, the town shuts down on Friday nights in the fall. If it was a country song, I would make fun of it for being a cliche checklist song, but it’s real. At the same time, many of the issues you present about the small-town life exist here in the background. We don’t have flashy crimes like armed robbery or crazy shootings, but there is a shocking amount of substance abuse, domestic (spousal and child) abuse, poverty, hunger, and many other issues. We’re just now seeing the influx of the opioid epidemic take root at the high school. There is good and bad, just like anywhere in the world. I think people here love these songs because it projects the real positives, while ignoring the negatives because that’s what we actually want to believe. Personally, after living in a relatively large city for a few years, I think city and rural folks have way more in common than the media would like us to believe. I’d love to hear your further thoughts on this.
And on a side note, the amounts of hunger and food insecurity you see in a “farming” community may seem incredulous until you see it yourself. The convenience of large chains like Dollar General/Family Dollar/or whatever else are a plague on small town communities.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:30 pm
Thanks for sharing your perspective Kenny S.
July 19, 2023 @ 1:56 pm
What a mess.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:44 pm
Who is it a mess for? People that didn’t like Aldean anyway? Aldean and his camp who are now sitting at the top of Apple Music? Everybody got what they wanted here. Aldean has the hottest song on a huge music platform, and the left has something to bitch and moan about. I’d argue that everyone is happy.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:10 pm
We all know exactly who Jason Aldean is, exactly who he’s pandering to, and why he does it. He’s a shameless huckster, making toy music for toy people. The attention he’s being showered with was the whole point.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:16 pm
Where’s the proof, other than your interpretation of this awful song? Awful music, not awful racist music. What have you accomplished in life that’s anywhere comparable to what he’s done. Loser lefties want to beat him down, but most haven’t had his level of success in life. But, they claim he’s dumb, etc. Dumb all the way to the bank to support his family for generations.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:23 pm
I never said anything you’re pretending I did. Being wealthy does not necessarily equal artistic integrity. Stop peeking under every rock to rationalize away your personal agenda.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:23 pm
Accomplishments in life are more than being a famous pop country star.
Being good parents, caring for your aging relatives, getting up and going to work, paying your bills, helping where help is needed. Those are accomplishments in this life.
Try again and try not to suck.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:25 pm
Aldean seems to have triggered a lot of lefties, which is always the sign you’re doing something good.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:28 pm
Aldean, nothing he does is good. He just wants attention, and he’s getting that from idiots who think he’s a patriot or actually cares about something. He’s the reason why country music sucks today: because he needed to make money. That’s what he’s doing right now, making money off of retards who glorify him. Keep giving him money, so he can record a few more records with hard rock and hip hop music. Meh.
July 20, 2023 @ 4:10 pm
And a lot of rigties too????????????
July 19, 2023 @ 2:25 pm
One of the more interesting things about the controversy is how Jason not once brought up race. The clips in his video arent of only black people. The people trying to burn down the federal courthouse for 100 days in Portland were majority white. In fact, I’d have to wager the vast majority of the membership of BLM is white. Certainly blacks participated in the rioting in the Summer of Fentanyl Floyd in 2020, but I think it was majority white. So why do people say theres a racial element to the song or video? If people had evidence Jason supports violence by one group and not another, then youd have a point. He clearly hates violence, any violence at all. But thats not society in 2023. Prisons are racist, police are racist. Since blacks make up majority of prisoners and crime is overwhelmingly in inner city Democrat ran cities, there must be some other reason to explain why that is. It’s capitalism, or imperialism, or the corrupt racist police. Where’s the self empowerment, and breaking the cycle though. Excusing inner city violence as just how things are, or the silly AOC notion that people steal because they are poor, puts the onus on others, and makes a victim mentality. Everyones a victim, no ones willing to do something to better themselves to get themselves into a better situation. If Im not where I want to be in life, and blame it on capitalism, Im off the hook. I can just blame others for my own failures. If Im not a CEO it’s because etc company is racist and sexist. If Im not a senior partner at the law firm it’s because the law firm is homophobic. At some point people need to be accountable for their own actions. Single motherhood in the black community is skyrocketing and it’s a problem. As is crime, drugs, violence, and antisocial behavior. All those are under the control of the individuals and have nothing to do with capitalism. Further the Summer of Saint Floyd riots proved people dont steal and loot because they are poor. They steal because they can. People dont need flat screen tvs and laptops and phones but they were the items looted by BLM. Not a months worth of groceries and essential items for living. It’s funny how people reveal themselves. He didnt say word one about race or the color of peoples skin, either the townspeople or the police or the perpetrators. Yet people automatically assumed.
July 19, 2023 @ 2:59 pm
People don’t want to face reality, hear the truth, or be fair to others. They just want to scream racist and join the cool, left wing, tranny loving idiots that scream the loudest and pat each other on the back as our country goes to shit, women’s sports are destroyed, etc. They can’t see that the more left wing ideology permeates society life gets worse and we are going down the drain, most sadly failing our kids and grandkids. I’m sick of people calling white men racists when there’s no evidence to support it. His music is increasingly terrible, but he’s done a lot for people less fortunate than him. He won the Radio Broadcasters Humanitarian Award a few years ago, but they will turn on him because it’s the cool thing to do now. Meanwhile. Just like Morgan, he will become more popular. I made a playlist and added this stupid song 100 times. It’s playing on repeat. It sucks so bad, I had to turn the volume off, but I’m sick of people trying to cancel others over dumb shit.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:25 pm
“I’m sick of people trying to cancel others over dumb shit.”
Says the side that created “cancel culture” by canceling the Dixie Chicks.
Says the side trying to cancel Bud Light because of who they chose to partner with.
Says the side that’s trying to cancel Target because they sell LGBTQIA+ products.
Yeah, you assholes really hate “cancel culture,” don’t you.
Go pound sand.
July 19, 2023 @ 6:41 pm
You both need to spend some time away from twitter. But Mr. Daydreamer needs a long, long timeout from the internet.
“The side.” This ain’t sports, bro. You’re being manipulated by algorithms and who knows what else.
Mad about the Dixie Chicks thing? What have you said about the proxy war in Ukraine? Did you say anything when the Obama admin destroyed Libya and tried to do the same to Syria? I doubt it. Do you care about Iraq, or know anything about it? Did you care about the brutal sanctions Clinton imposed, or were you even alive then?
Outrage isn’t knowledge or wisdom. You’re as bad as Aldean in that respect.
“If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”
Substitute social media for newspapers and this is where we are. Chris Knight wrote a song about the same damn thing and you didn’t hear a word, apparently.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:03 pm
No no no,
I am 100% conservative and I am very in favor of cancel culture. You, being a communist, I will do my best to cancel you because you threaten my culture and livelihood.
You probably think you’re talking to a regular “Republican”. The new right is waking up and ready to take you communists on
July 19, 2023 @ 9:47 pm
Charlie,
I think you and I will get along very well.
July 22, 2023 @ 7:34 pm
I love your comment here, because I feel exactly the same. Useless, milquetoast “Republican” politics are artifacts of a more civilized country– one that simply doesn’t exist anymore.
The left may have all the institutional power now, but the people are slowly beginning to awake, and the gatekeepers won’t keep us back when the time is right. Some of the crazed anti-white bigots on this site are just gonna *love* whats coming, because for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction (basic physics).
July 19, 2023 @ 9:46 pm
…..”Yeah, you assholes really hate “cancel culture,” don’t you.”…..
I’m not sure who you’re talking to, but I freaking love cancel culture. I would deploy it on you this very instant if I could.
July 20, 2023 @ 5:16 am
I’m sure you would.
But the asshole who sings a pro-lynching song and wears blackface, you’re all fine and good with him.
That says all that needs to be said of you, Court Jester of where-the-fuck-ever.
July 19, 2023 @ 4:30 pm
I’ll agree with you on some of that… but.
If a cop kills any one of my family or friends, he probably won’t make it far down the road either.
Also, if Jason Aldean trys to stir any of my family or friends into being vigilantes, well he might not make it far either.
Also, if you come around here and start telling me that my family and friends can only blame themselves for not being successful, you might not make it far either.
Also, if you start talking politics on my favourite website, likewise road.
Not using the enter key, road
Caps key, road
This really is a dead end road.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:29 pm
Sounds like you like roads and agree with Jason on quite a few things. This article is political. Trigger posted it and allowed comments on it, so not sure how you expect people to discuss this specific incident without mentioning politics. If you dont want people talking politics on your favorite website, take it up with the person who runs the site and posts articles involving politics. Anyways, you mentioned being upset if a cop murdered a family member. In 2020, those events were front-page news. We know all the names. In almost all the cases we’ve seen in the last couple years, its suspects not complying with police orders, running away, grabbing an officers gun, lunging, having a gun and shooting at police, driving away from police. Theres some rogue police just as there are in every job, but the idea theres this out of control police force in the millions intent on the genocide of all people of color is ludicrous. And it’s also not borne out by facts and statistics. Also it’s very selective who the left wingers say is deserving as victim status in terms of being gunned down by cops. 2020 was filled with violent suspects and felons being killed by cops and then hailed as the second coming. If a white cop even slapped cuffs on someone black it was somehow national news. Yet Ashli Babbitt, an unarmed vet, who was white, was killed by Capitol Hill police on 1/6. No national day of remembrance happened for her, and corporations didnt bow to the mob for her. In fact, in the hours after the riot on 1/6, Congress reconvienced in the chamber, and Capitol police were given standing ovations for their work that day. For keeping the politicians safe. The same politicians who spent that entire year saying we needed to get police out of schools, and abolish police totally in society. Somehow when it was their own lives at stake they were thankful for the presence of police to ward off the mob. BLM is a grift for these reasons. Lots of people get killed by police, and they arent all blacks. They are white too. The left seems to sound the bat signal anytime at all a white officer and black suspect are in a scuffle. Newsflash:sometimes police are good, and sometimes blacks can be violent criminals who deserve long prison sentences. As you yourself said, it’s a life and death thing. Cops have families and wives and husbands too. They want to come home to them. If a suspect, no matter what color, is acting in a way that necessitates the police in using lethal force, I am all for it. Police deserve to come home too. It feels like the left expects police to have guns pointed at them, and them to just say, okay you can shoot. Chris Rock had a great skit about police in the 90s. He laid it out pretty clearly, if you follow certain instructions and laws you wont be killed by police. One is following lawful orders. How many times do we see the suspect not listen to a cop or argue or mouth off. Another is if an officer says stop, you stop. Dont run away from a cop. Dont approach one with a knife or gun or weapon of any kind intending to harm them.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:41 pm
Generally speaking, I discourage people veering into political subjects in the comments section unless it’s relevant to the subject at hand. In this instance, it’s relevant. I also try to avoid overtly political subjects unless it’s necessary. In this case, it’s necessary.
July 19, 2023 @ 6:39 pm
Sure I agree with lots of things lots of people say.
Actually most people agree.
You aren’t saying anything that anyone disagrees with. Everyone knows that life isn’t perfect.
Blm riots and capitol riots were both just people getting angry and smashing shit.
I mean everyone agrees with that. Pop country sucks, lets go smash something until they take it off the radio.
Problem is complaining doesn’t fix anything. Neither does blaming anyone.
But you are always free to ignore it.
Go to a lake, drink a beer, talk to a cow, catch a fish. Listen to country songs about fishing, cows and lakes.
Its actually a really nice world
July 19, 2023 @ 7:05 pm
We dont disagree. The point of this post is the controversy in this particular case is by the left not the right. The song is two months old. We’ve heard it since it dropped. The woke mob heard it because of the release of the video and instead of doing any of the things you listed, they tried to cancel him and got CMT to cuck and pull the video. The right sure as hell isnt calling him a racist and trying to cancel him. It’s the left in this example. Im happy to do all those things, but to act like this instance is symmetrical is insane. The song and video are great. We had no problems until the left deemed it an unsafe video for viewing. Maybe if the people so worked up over a video and the lyrics of a country song that they are willing to demean, and harass Jason, instead did any of the things you said. Im not complaining and wasnt before. We’ve been here enjoying Jasons album. Suddenly now, listening to him is racist and his videos are dangerous enough to warrant CMT cucking. The problem here isnt with us, its with them. I just want to listen and watch music by an artist I enjoy. I planned on doing that. And was prevented from doing so.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:15 pm
Let’s not oversell the significance of CMT pulling the video. CMT only shows videos for a few hours in the mornings these days. Also, nobody watches CMT, or the videos.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:25 pm
True. But Blackhats statement was that it was just complaining and people need to get a life and get outside. I dont disagree. Its sound advice. But the complaining is absolutely what caused CMT to pull it. The fear the woke mob just like all modern day corporations. Whether CMT is the epicenter of country in 2023 or not is irrelevant to the point. The complaining is driving the entire story, and I mean all of it. His fans have no problem with the music or video. And in fact loved it. The people going after him and his wife, and they’ve both spoken in the days since of the insane media circus going on around them, is perpetuated by complaining Karens who think being exposed to ideas that are to the right of Mao are somehow going to cause little Johnny to become a racist. This story is a non story if people didnt complain. Otherwise it’s just a Jason single. SCM is absolutely more of the place to gather now, but it’s still significant. When Morgan was pulled from radio and Bobby Bones gave that phony fake emotional rant about how he was no longer going to play Morgan anymore and was sorry he had him on his show. Is Bobby Bones really driving country music anymore. He was that person at one time, but not nowadays. He’s not but it was a significant and important moment in that story. Those of us who agree with Jasons politics and enjoy his music didnt make the story a big deal. it was made a big deal when activists tried to cancel him and his wife the last few days.
July 20, 2023 @ 5:23 am
Ashley Babbitt was a fucking traitor who would be alive today if she had just complied.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:30 am
She was a Patriot. I agree in terms of Jacob Blake, George Floyd, and Raychard Brooks, Ahmaud Arbery, who all were career felons, high on drugs, refused to comply with officer orders, and unfortunately what happens is you die as a result. They should have complied but didnt and thats what happens. Someone who puts a loaded gun to a pregnant woman’s stomach while robbing them certainly isnt my idea of a good person or someone who is acting in good faith. Fentanyl Floyd, swallowed the baggie of drugs he had on him when approached by Chauvin, which cost him his life as he had a panic attack and refused to follow orders. Beyond that he was driving while intoxicated. The idea Chauvins racism took over and he happened to see a black man and took it out on him is fantasy. He was called to the scene, responded to a man having a panic attack because he swallowed a baggie of drugs, then that man refused to follow the orders given. I support the officers in all listed cases, they did nothing wrong, and had Fentanyl Floyd followed orders he would he alive today. Jacob Blake shot at officer, then attempted to flee in a car that contained little kids. Raychard Brooks lunged for the officers gun, then ran away from the cops. All of these are felons resisting arrest and getting popped for their noncompliance. It happens, sadly. But thats the risks involved in resisting arrest while high on drugs and not complying.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:02 am
I stopped reading your bullshit after “she was a patriot.” She was literally a part of a mob that tried to breach the Capitol and overthrow the government.
She was a traitor.
July 20, 2023 @ 10:33 am
I’ve never heard of people overthrowing the govt without guns, guess you have. That’s news to me,
July 19, 2023 @ 3:16 pm
It’s funny how you always threaten to shut down comments very early in these types of political arguments, but you rarely do. It seems the clicks are worth more than your principles. You are like the parent that threatens to punish their child, but doesn’t. You’ve also deleted comments that you personally don’t agree with, but let others call a man a racist with zero, real proof. That’s wrong, calling a man a racist without verifiable, solid evidence should be beyond acceptable.Sad! I’m sure you will delete this too.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:31 pm
Huh, here’s a comment complaining that I’m unfair to commenters on the right. I just responded to a comment on how I’m unfair to people on the left.
Just stop it.
And yes, I will shut comments sections down. Did so on an article last week. But it’s a last resort. Are you saying you want this comments section shut down? I’m more than happy to do so.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:47 pm
I’m just saying that you always threaten it but almost never do it. Plus, you, or any other outlet, should never let someone call an artist a racist and not push back; you push back on less. It B would help society if journalist (I suppose that’s what you claim to be) would demand people’s character attacks be accurate. I don’t give a damn if you shut the comments down or not. It would be far better for society if we didn’t accept these unproven attacks. Saying he’s a jerk is fine, h but to allow vile attacks on his character to this degree crosses the line. There is no corroborating evidence anyone points to that suggests he’s a racist. People are getting fed up with ignorant attacks like this and the pushback is going to become more aggressive if smart.|reasonable people don’t demand this crap stop. The song sucks, his music generally sucks, but he seems like he’s done good for people in his life. He deserves better and journalist should say so. The people that made the video have even stated he had nothing to do with choosing the location it was shot. He deserves to. be taken at his word as to what. his Intent was with the song. If anything, the bigger story is why those that know him, and other artist facing such unfounded attacks, don’t defend him. They are cowards for not standing up and pushing back if they know him to not be a racist. The media is slowing the conversation to become something less than reality. I don’t like his music, but I will never allow others to attack someone’s character without pushing back vigorously. It needs to stop before good people fo bad things because they’ve been unfairly persecuted. I’ve spent enough time on this. See ya down the road. I’m done responding to idiocy, not you, but those that call him a racist.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:05 pm
Bibs,
At this point, people calling other people “racist” is just stock. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been called racist, including publicly by artists like Margo Price. What for? What have I don’t that’s “racist”? I never got an answer. I’m not saying it’s not wrong. But that this point it’s just shorthand for “I don’t like this person, and don’t really have any more salient argument to make.”
July 19, 2023 @ 3:28 pm
LOL Gentile is big mad!
July 19, 2023 @ 7:20 pm

He/she/zir is the most miserable person here.
It must be tough being a perpetually offended zealot.
July 19, 2023 @ 3:43 pm
Two things:
That’s the best article I’ve read on the subject and eclipses the New Yorker article, which I thought was more pandering than Jason Aldean. I’ll be sharing it with my class when the subject comes up as it inevitably will.
Second, when did Jason begin having that “Trace Adkins constipated stance“? Standing there with his arms to the sides trying to look tough when he simply looks like he’s got to find the closest place to drop a deuce after a Buc-cees breakfast taco.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:05 pm
Cobra is back in the form of The Gentile. How many times do you have to hit refresh to bump up your own comments?
July 19, 2023 @ 7:19 pm
you can’t. try it with your own. but maybe i could just post as honky? you know, like he did as me?
July 19, 2023 @ 5:26 pm
“Nothing is solved, or even addressed through a song and video like this.”
Naturally, since that’s not the purpose of good songs, or good art. The purpose of song is to give people a voice. Here, the song expresses small town solidarity and resolve against outsiders who come looking to get violent and destructive. That’s a healthy sentiment and should be general across America. The destructive forces are coming in from the outside, and if you don’t think that, you’re not paying attention.
I’m also glad this song and video aren’t about the usual forgettable bullsh*t topics. Finally someone is singing about something important and real. Is it a great song? Not really. Is it country music? No, it’s Southern Pop Rock. But is it striking a chord and striking a nerve? Yes, on both counts.
Now go write songs about corruption, evil, and graft. We’re waiting.
July 20, 2023 @ 12:13 pm
When was the last time a small town had to band together to keep out “outsiders who come looking to get violent and destructive”. This whole thing is just a crappy, crappy rock song based on a false premise designed to stir up false controversy.
July 19, 2023 @ 5:38 pm
The strongest underlying message in the song is self defense and gun ownership – Both are under attack in the major cites and that is what is driving the sentiment of this song. Support for self-defense should not be regulated to just one side of the political spectrum. And I 100% agree that attempts to suppress this song will have a Streisand effect. Message aside, musically it’s just not a good song. It’s stock Aldean-sounding. Even though I don’t agree with every part of the song, especially lumping in flag burning with self defense, I have some level of appreciation that he is willing to risk damage to his career by releasing this song when all other A-list country stars who likely share his beliefs are silent. (Kid Rock and Jon Rich don’t count) I don’t want anything from the 2000’s Pro-Bush era of country to come back, but Country artists should be more willing to stand up for freedom. I with ‘Courtesy of the Red White and Blue’ would have been thrown into the trash heap 2 decades ago.
I live in Columbia TN and it is a melting pot of political beliefs, but I am proud to say I live here because it was one of the few counties that had ZERO Covid restrictions in 2020. This song is another reason why country stars of the past will always be the greatest. Merle Haggards ‘Are the Good Times Really Over For Good’ remains the best social commentary “protest” song IMO.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:50 am
There is a bad tendency on the Left to conflate self defense with vigilantism, and I don’t think it’s accidental.
July 19, 2023 @ 6:18 pm
Let’s face facts here. This song and video is doing exactly what Jason Aldean’s handlers, label and minders want it to do. It’s raising his profile with all the lefties hollering about where he filmed it and how it’s a dog-whistle call to violence. The righties pitch a fit about how it’s his god-given right to put out a song (written by four other guys) that advocates vigilante violence as an admirable small town value. The video itself wasn’t meant to be shown on CMT, it was meant to be shown ad infinitum on Fox News. If the song isn’t already the bumper music on half the Hannity/Levin/Larson/Pags/Beck Rush Limbaugh acolytes’ shows by now, I’d be pretty surprised. Aldean’s handlers and minders will ride the outrage machine all the way to the bank. Too bad they didn’t have an actual good song to do it with – but (at least to my ears) actual good songs aren’t exactly this guy’s specialty to start with.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:28 pm
Rush Limbaugh has been dead for awhile now. Surprised you didn’t drop the surprisingly fresh and often used “Faux News.”
July 19, 2023 @ 8:30 pm
I meant to infer that Hannity, etc. were the (vastly less entertaining and talented) followers of Rush Limbaugh but did so inelegantly. My bad. I stand by the rest though. This teapot tempest was intentionally whipped up by label men and A&R guys to sell a rotten record. It speaks volumes about how easily people get sucked in, chewed up and spit out by the outrage machine.
July 19, 2023 @ 8:48 pm
Gotcha. I liked Rush Limbaugh even though he was often too much of a cheerleader for Republicans and RINOS. Hannity is garbage. IDK Larson and Pags
July 19, 2023 @ 6:28 pm
I don’t hate Jason Aldean for any political reasons; I hate home because he produces shit music. There is common ground to be had here people.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:54 pm
You really hate him? Wow
July 19, 2023 @ 6:51 pm
I don’t even particularly care for Aldean. He’s always just been another guy on the radio for me. But if he’s managed to piss of this many lefties, he’s done something right.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:58 pm
Yup. Amen to that. What many of these normies don’t realize is that we are well beyond liberal outrage. These communist have ruined everything we loved about this country. Art, film, sports, academics. If Jason Aldean (who let’s be honest, bro country is ass) is pissing them off, then I’m buying all his albums and shirts
July 19, 2023 @ 7:40 pm
The guitar riff is from “Beat It” by Michael Jackson played by guitarist Steve Lukather.
July 19, 2023 @ 7:56 pm
For the record, I have enjoyed your writing for quite a while. And we can agree that Jason Andean is bro country, and, let’s be honest, mainstream “country” is dead and has been for a while. In a normal world, yes, I would say that this is a dumb song to make. But, and I’m sorry to say this, we need to have Jason Al dean’s back.
Be honest. Johnny Cash, Merle, Hank Williams, they aren’t just rolling over in their graves but also puking gallons of disgust. You have this bull crap Drag queens and inclusivity nonsense at the CMT awards, woke annoying people like Maren Morris, Kaycee Musgraves pushing nonsense, but we draw the line at Jason Aldean?? Say what you want, but people like Musgraves, Morris, etc have killed country music and our society way worse. There is no “both sides” I know I sound like I lose credibility by slamming liberalism, but my guy this shit is a cancer o no society and has ruined everything we loved about America. Our academics, sports, Film, art. So no, as much as I don’t like Jason Aldean, he at least has the courage to stand up to this nonsense. And please correct me if I am wrong, but have you ever criticized whacky liberals in country music?? Like I said, I may have overlooked that.
I believe you are a good person, but like many normies, you still assume that leftists are crazy but won’t due any harm. Brother, wake up and realize this country is in its final days
July 19, 2023 @ 8:37 pm
I have stated my opinions much to the ire of Trigger and others here, but this article is overwhelmingly fair. I understand your sentiment and anger. The fact that we have to even “debate” with Leftist normies that Aldean and his people weren’t intentionally dogwhistling to racists about being ‘Pro-Lynching’, is just insane. However the arts are always going to be dominated by people who are to the left of whatever the established thought is.
July 19, 2023 @ 9:29 pm
It just irks me when people say “both sides” when no, in fact it’s the left that is fucking insane. You can’t “both sides” me when liberals, (including country artists!!) encourage boys chopping their dicks off and girls cutting their breasts off.
Artists have always been leftists, but they’ve gone way too far. When they preach communism, either in the form of inclusivity, climate change, Black Lives Matter, that’s a bridge too far. I don’t know what’s sadder. The fact the America we grew up in is dead, or the communism we now live in
July 20, 2023 @ 7:25 am
I’m not sure you understand what communism is.
July 20, 2023 @ 1:48 pm
apparently its science and being nice to people. blink twice if communism is in the room with you right now.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:10 pm
I know what Communism isn’t. It’s not the ideology labeled Communism of the Late 1800’s thru the 1900’s that was implemented in multiple countries directly contributing to the deaths of hundreds of millions. That is not Communism, despite having the same name and same utopian promises that lead to starvation.

So I have a question: what, precisely, is the moral difference between “Try That in a Small Town” and “Wait in the Truck” by Hardy and Lainey WIlson?
They’re both about a rural guy (or guys) with a gun who ignores due process, Miranda rights, and the 5th amendment to the Constitution to pursue justice as he sees it.
Now, clearly, the Hardy song purports to be about defending the weak and innocent, but from a strictly legal perspective, the story is absurd: we don’t murder people on hearsay without trial, right? You know, Constitutional rights and all that?
Just as clearly, the Aldean song- and especially the video- are coded as Us vs Them, and setting any racial considerations aside for the moment, the Them are clearly coded as urban youth, which have played a strong role in right-wing political imagery for a long time, from Reagan’s “welfare queens” to Willie Horton to the Clinton’s stirring the pot about “superpredators” to Donald Trump’s “American Carnage.”
So I think Aldean’s team wins points for stirring the pot and getting loads of attention, but the basic idea, that sometimes we have to take the law into our own hands, is not that different from “Beer for my Horses”, “Wait in The Truck,” “Church Bells Ringing” by Carrie Underwood, or- wait for it- the Dixie Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl.”
The difference is that Aldean leans hard into the culture wars, and Hardy and the Chicks didn’t. Toby and Willie sort of straddled the culture wars after 9/11 but it wasn’t that controversial. The Chicks- and Underwood- sang about outright, cold-blooded murder!
Final verdict: the Aldean song sucks, but it’s not way out of line of the sentiments of other country songs. It sucks because, well, musically it’s a generic piece of country radio blech, but also because the point of it seems to be the culture wars. He could have told an interesting story with the same point, with no controversy, and a vastly different video.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:53 am
It seems to me that the difference (beyond musical style and production) is that Wait in the Truck is a story, while Try That in a Small Town is a generic statement. This means that the latter is inevitably going to come off as more directly political, because it’s not discussing an event, it’s setting forth a manifesto.
Now, Wait in the Truck of course contains an implicit political statement, or at least implicit political point of view. But it’s neither surprising nor wrong that people react differently to a personalized and personalizable story than to a generic manifesto.
It’s the difference between someone telling a story about their mother getting sick and a person pontificating about health policy. They’re similar in some ways, but they can and should produce different reactions.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:22 pm
You make some good points. I think the main sentiment of the song is still legal self defense and that includes using guns or physicality within the constraints of the law depending on the situation. (the flag burning bit is a glaring hole and it is also protected speech under the constitution) I 100% agree that all of the points could have been worded better. Why not highlight the black business owners who had their shops burned down in BLM riots? Trying to parse out the potential nuance in this song is almost pointless because musically it’s just terrible and it’s embarrassing that it took 4 people to cobble together something this generic. Aaron Lewis had a better “right-wing protest song.”
July 19, 2023 @ 9:13 pm
Well Trig, I was looking forward to making fun of you for this. But you really didn’t say anything too silly, and mostly just stuck to the story. The only part that stood out to me as blatantly false, and reaching, was where you strawmanned the song by arguing that, “ACKSHUALLY! Small towns do have some crime!”; as if the premise of the song is that small towns are completely free of any crime or struggle. And you seem to intentionally equate normal crime, with communists exploiting the death of a man who overdosed on fentanyl to wage a war of chaos and destruction on America for the better part of a year.
I sort of agree it feels dated, but only because the communists weren’t able to get enough long-term normie support, to continue hiding behind the cloak of “mostly-peaceful protests.” And, the communists haven’t been able to manufacture a martyr big enough to generate nationwide organization they way they did in 2020. But it’s not for lack of trying. Operation “Trans” Floyd has been underway since the lockdowns ended. The communists are desperate for a “Trans” Floyd, with hopes they can reignite the chaos.
This song is an anti-communist anthem that thinks it’s an anti-leftwing-violence anthem. What I mean by that is, that neither the song’s writers, nor Aldean, truly understand that we’re dealing with communism, but they do recognize how what we’re dealing with has manifested itself, and want to pushback publicly, by expressing solidarity with their people. And while I obviously agree with you that the song isn’t remotely country, I still support any pro-America, anti-communist sentiment. Also, for the record, back and 2020, I kept thinking to myself, “Man, I wish these scrawny, pasty, white rodents would try this in rural America.”
Your assertion that nothing is addressed by the song reveals you as the outsider to rural America that I’ve always believed you to be. You don’t understand, and can’t relate to small town/rural sentiment, because you’re not one of us. Because you don’t inherently share our values, which are just traditional American values, you can’t relate to wanting to express solidarity in an environment like this. You love to repeat some version of the phrase “stirs the culture war pot”, as if we could just calmly rid our nation of communism by ignoring it. Your worldview is pathetically naïve, and assumes there is some magical middle-ground between good and evil. Both sides are not to blame. One side is trying to destroy your country and end your way of life. The other side is trying to live free as Americans. If someone tries to break into your house, Trig, you are not to blame for stopping them.
As for the reaction to the song, nationally, and in this comments section, the communists are actively deploying the narcissist tactic known as DARVO. It’s classic Marxism.
Deny- “There wasn’t any serious violence in 2020; just people exercising their rights.”
Attack- “You f**king racists! This song is about hanging black people!”
Reverse the roles of
Victim and
Offender- “I’m now scared to death of walking through small-towns and being violently attacked by vigilante rednecks!”
What really bothers me though, is how the right-wingers react to this. When a communist calls you a racist, the proper response isn’t: “I’m not a racist! How dare you call me a racist without evidence!” The proper response is: “You’re going to Hell, Communist.”
It’s vitally important to understand that the communist hasn’t shed a single, solitary tear for a dead black man, nor does the communist believe you’re a racist, or really even care if you actually are. The communist is simply angry about the pushback. This level of pushback is how you know you’ve done something right. Feed the communist what he hates. Be his worst nightmare. Be a monster if you have to. Offend him. Cancel him. Destroy him(legally). Your children’s future depends on it.

Thanks for not disappointing, Honky. Just when we all thought you couldn’t get any more entertaining, you deliver this!
July 19, 2023 @ 11:26 pm
Surprised you jumped in here this late, Honky!
Very well said. People trying to say this song is about lynching are insane and purposefully spinning the song’s narrative. The level of hatred these people display towards fundamental American values should be astounding, but it’s rather par for the course these days.
July 20, 2023 @ 1:15 am
The town where the music video was shot has crime. There are ms13 and Bloods syndicates who sell drugs in Columbia TN. I heard this directly from someone who works at the FBI office near my house. The “problem” neighborhoods are also the most diverse. Label me how you want people, but I knew what sides of town not to buy a house on.
July 20, 2023 @ 4:53 am
Deny – Floyd didn’t die of “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression” as the medical examiner noted…it was drugs! (even though Floyd’s actions leading up to the restraint did not exhibit lethargy or anything that would normally happen before an overdose of fentanyl.
Attack – The communist is trying to destroy our/your country! He’s extremely cunning and knows exactly what he’s doing (even though people have been saying that since the 50s and we’re not a communist country, pretty poor performance by the cunning and manipulative communist).
Reverse the roles of
Victim and
Offender- BLM is coming to attack and rob you! (I actually had my mother-in-law ask me ‘aren’t you afraid of BLM coming to your house and destroying everything’ a couple years ago. It was the most ridiculous question that I’ve ever been asked).
Anyways, I get a kick out of your absurd communist rants. Keep em coming!

Midwits like Travis are an unfortunate phenomenon in modern Western society. It’s evident by their grammar, that they could’ve been better than what they are, but somewhere along the way, someone failed to teach them how to think. It’s honestly sad, just how full of men like Travis, the West is.
As for Travis’s unfortunate attempt at recycling the DARVO charge and pointing it back at either me, or the right in general, I know that he won’t be able to receive anything true…in fact, I suspect he typed his response with a proud, unwarranted, ignorantly-arrogant smirk on his face, but I just want to correct what he’s said here for anyone reading who’s truly seeking the answers.
It would only take midwits a little bit of effort to research the full video of the Floyd incident, along with the autopsy report, to know that there is significant evidence to suggest that Floyd attempted to consume his drug stash, which resulted in overdose, which led to cardiopulmonary arrest. The video of the event shows Floyd lethargic and non-compliant. The autopsy report also states, “No life-threatening injuries identified”. Additionally, jurors are on the record stating they found Chauvin guilty out of fear of additional riots. Chauvin currently intends to take his appeal to the Supreme Court.
Part of the midwit’s problem, is that, as a product of the Department of Eduacation, he was likely educated, or rather mis-educated, at a minimum in some indirect way, by Marx-inspired teachers or curriculum. The midwit is effectively, unwittingly helping to hide those who’ve victimized him. If he understood the communist’s goal, he’d know that America was too large to be taken by direct force, and instead had to be taken through subversion, which the communist has done, and continues to do, since the 1930s. The midwit is so out of touch with reality, that he doesn’t understand that the religion of Communism has infected virtually everything in his daily life.
Has Travis convinced himself not only that BLM didn’t attack and rob people, but also that his mother-in-law poses a violent threat to BLM?
July 20, 2023 @ 9:38 am
I get it. If you knew me, you’d know how deeply I get it.
But I will say this—be careful with monsters. Once unleashed, they’re hard to control. Becoming one might just mean losing everything.
July 19, 2023 @ 11:00 pm
the thing that galls me about the song, besides it being sonically a mess and not actually country, is the hypocrisy. The usual fake, staged “patriotism” and posturing. He condemns the notion of “cuss out a cop, spit in his face” while the very same people who crow these lyrics are apologists and/or make excuses for the Jan 6 insurrectionists who beat, kicked, attacked, brutalized, pepper sprayed cops. These fake cop supporters who make excuses for people who attack cops in the name of Dear Leader, what a bunch of hypocrites.

July 20, 2023 @ 11:42 am
No. She’s a clown, but it was funny that she showed Hunter with a prostitute getting a blowjob at a congressional hearing! Imagine if Trump (also a moron) and his family had taken nearly $20 million from China. Where’s the lefty outrage that Mr. Brain Dead and his family are criminals selling out our nation.

July 20, 2023 @ 3:42 am
This is not a pro-lynching song. People overreact over the dumbest things. Two black Cadillacs should be banned because it’s pro murder then.
July 20, 2023 @ 11:39 am
And where are the female women’s libbers upset about rappers and hip hop artists calling them bitches and hoes. Maybe that’s how they see themselves, I hope not but it’s a strange world these days. Who points this out in the media? I guess it ain’t cool to criticize a black rapper, regardless of what they say. Hypocrisy = zero respect!
July 20, 2023 @ 5:09 am
No one gave two turds about this pedestrian song until Jason Aldean released a video showing the actual behavior of Black Lives Matter, Inc.
Apart from the poor writing, one can conclude the “Anonymous Internet” got upset when he pointed out that what BLM, Inc. did was terrible.
He should have his writers cook up another gem about how the three lesbian leaders of Black Lives Matter, Inc. now live in huge mansions in gated White neighborhoods far from the urban centers “they” burned down.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:10 am
The two month silence on this song followed by the Twitter/media outrage recently really does speak volumes to how things cycle through the zeitgeist.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:18 am
Right, because it has nothing to do with the video being released. Are you really that obtuse or just a bold faced liar?
July 20, 2023 @ 7:23 am
Obviously it has everything to do with the video being released. That’s the point. The video implicates BLM, so it had to be attacked. If they lyrics were “pro-lynching” (which they’re saying now), then they had two months to go after them and didn’t. Someone should pull up Willie Nelson’s line from “Beer For My Horses,” which he still sings in concert today.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:46 am
They are arguing it’s pro lynching because he paired pro mob violence lyrics with the site of an actual lynching and imagery of black anger and frustration boiling over. You can’t make that argument before he or his people decided to film his video about threatening small town violence at a courthouse in what is certainly not a small town.
July 20, 2023 @ 11:35 am
You can’t criticize blacks people., even though they, like Appalachian’s suck up govt. resources because they are either too lazy or dumb to take advantage of a free education to improve their lives. I grew up in Appalachia and decided I wanted to have nice things and live a nice life, so I worked hard, for education by serving in a war to earn the GI bill. It was my only path because at that time the govt. wasn’t gonna give it to me or forgive my loans, if I could have even gotten one. Blacks are 13% of the population and commit over 50% of violent crime. Their education statistics are down right embarrassing. They continue to vote against their own self interests, unless their self interests are to keep the welfare going. These are facts, but I’m sure I’m racists for pointing them out. To solve a problem, you first have to admit it’s a problem. We are allowing, actually promoting and enabling, most blacks and Appalachian people to continue to damage our culture and nation by not cutting off the Pickett. It’s was so bad in New Orleans ghettos, even in the mid 90’s, that a black friend wanted me to visit his mom and dad, but demanded that I meet him in the French Quarter so he could take me to their house because he didn’t think it was safe. South Chicago is a damned war zone. Eastern Kentucky, where I grew up is a meth lab full of no teethed drug heads. It’s sad for me when I go back home to see the devastation and poverty. But, at least they don’t burn down each others businesses and murder at an insane rate. Our people have no courage to speak the truth. Jason Aldean doesn’t deserve to be called a racists for showing the ignorance of what happened in inner city America. It was laughably stupid and George Floyd was a life, drug addict, on child support paying thug. The cops that killed him deserved to be put in jail for life. Our media makes it out like cops are all racists and let’s scumbags like that attorney for Floyd’s family push that false narrative. Our media lets politicians do the same. We are a fucked nation because we don’t accept reality and call out ignorance. Now, since I’m in Nashville at the moment, Im going to that he’ll hole (Lower Broadway) to eat at Aldeans restaurant. Im also going to turn the volume off and let that shitty song play on repeat. Aldean deserves praise for not buckling to the mob, even if his song is beyond terrible from a musical perspective. If you can’t accept these facts, you are an idiot beyond belief.
July 20, 2023 @ 6:05 am
Well, I’ve listened to the song myself and made up my own mind about it.
Oops…was I not supposed to do that? I guess not…I’m supposed to listen to my “betters” and follow their direction on it.
Anyway, my response to the song itself in one word: meh. It’s clumsy pandering, just another laundry list song that political songs often are these days. Political songs used to be much better. I suppose Aldean is trying to ride what you could call the Bud Lite Wave.
But I guess those who are outraged by it have never heard of the Streisand Effect? This song would never have come up on my radar if they hadn’t been screeching so loudly about it. I sometimes wonder if they’re doing it on purpose…what purpose I can only guess.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:08 am
While, I understand the anger of the destruction, anarchy and violence in cities across the country that followed the George Floyd tragedy, Jason Aldean should realize that video of the January 6 insurrection would have fit perfectly in with the clips chosen for this video. Extreme polarization with an intent to hurt others is what the problem is here. Both on the right and the left.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:08 am
I haven’t even heard of this song until today when “CBS This Morning” did a segment on the video being pulled from CMT. I then forced myself to listen to it. I’m from a small town, soon moving back to a small town. How bad could it really be?
To me, it is just “list country” at its worst. Songs that just rattle off lists of: things you do in a small town, things there are in a small town, lists of why people are better/more moral/more whatever in a small town, etc. I grew up in a town of 500 people. Sure, kids never disrespected the town cop ever….uh huh…that’s right….no way not ever…that’s my story and I’m sticking to it…
Most of these types of list songs – I can’t even get through the first verse. Truck, dust, bobber, beer… I’m like, ok I’m done.
This song is just flat out cringe. But that’s just my opinion. I teach computer programming at a local college, so perhaps I’m just one of those lib academic types.
After listening to this song, I had to go listen to some Haggard. To remind myself that cultural topics could be sung about in a country song in a thoughtful non-dipshit way.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:24 am
For me, it was some Haggard (“Okie From Muskogee,” “Fighting Side of Me,” “Are the Good Times Really Over For Good”) and a lot of Johnny Cash (“Man in Black,” “What is Truth,” “Singin’ in Vietnam Talkin’ Blues” and – for a laugh – “The One on the Right is on the Left.” Those songs feel so much more like an actual statement from a real artist than the drivel we are currently all hyperventilating about.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:18 am
It’s like these cancel people have no understanding of the best response is to ignore approach. Just like a troll online, ignoring them is the best punishment. Now obviously if it’s truly a threat or bad it’s good to take action, but not something like this. Now it’ll be a mega hit and jason aldean was becoming irrelevant. The cancel people have ZERO GAME.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:19 am
Aldean and his financial advisers and SCM thank you for your support.
July 20, 2023 @ 7:58 am
Did the songwriters rip off the Beat It riff from Michael Jackson ?
July 20, 2023 @ 8:06 am
Was listening to a two-minute news briefing on my Alexa from the BBC (yes, the British Broadcasting Corporation) this morning and Jason Aldean’s video was one of their top news stories along with the usual updates on the war in Ukraine. Wtf?
This really does seem like manufactured outrage at this point, when even foreign news organizations are putting this at the top of their headlines today.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:19 am
Some folks think I leaned way to much into the role the media will play in this. But it will be the linchpin of this entire phenomenon, wherever it goes.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:09 am
Well Aldean got himself a popular song with this, even though it’s garbage like everything else he does. The cd player in my truck broke a couple months ago and I’ve been forced to listen to radio. Thankfully I found a classic country station that doesn’t play new country. This morning, the morning guy had to tell the audience today to stop calling in and complaining that they’re not hearing this song. He noted they don’t play any new country music and if they want to hear it, go to their sister station that plays new pop country, plays this song, and will continue to play this song. He had to confirm that it was nothing political so the snowflake audience can stop whining and complaining.
July 20, 2023 @ 8:16 am
There are many songs about small towns and this is one of them. It is not a lynching song and those that think it is need to listen to it properly. I am not for or against Aldean but like some of his songs. It is the music I am interested in. I have heard much worse than this song. Its about small town America and surely it is about values. I am tired of the cancel people culture unless you are from one particular side. As long as people, even singers (as long as they don’t think they are above the rest) keep the law, respect each other and show tolerance, no problem. A lynching song……..this one? Absolutely not!
July 20, 2023 @ 8:23 am
Got him to #1 on Apple. Looks like Aldean and his camp got what they wanted out of the controversy. Good job, left! Way to push people to go out and by music you’re morally outraged by. Apparently Tipper taught you nothing.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:22 am
Can’t wait for Country Universe’s terrible take on this subject!
July 20, 2023 @ 10:04 am
A truly shitty song that resonates with simpleminded folks. How quaint.

July 20, 2023 @ 7:01 pm
Let me guess. You’re one of those white people who think pretending to be offended helps black people? You don’t give a shit about what Aldean says anymore than I do. You just need to feel like you’re caring for the oppressed.
And before you go to your default response here, I think the song sucks. Lyrically weak and musically abysmal. Aldean has probably released 1-2 good songs in his career, and this isn’t one of em.
July 20, 2023 @ 9:02 pm
What the fuck are you going on about? Its a shitty song that only uses images that are meant to anger people who already hyped up on Fox news. . No images were used of January 6th. Hell ,they were actually calling for a lynching and that doesn’t seem to make the video. Neither does the video of Heather Hayer being run down by a white supremacist make it. That happened in a small town. Or when a person shot up a church in a small town killing 26 people. No video of that was included Or the opioid epidemic that affects a large portion of this country. No videos were available of those Americans for his video either? What about the video of the Black man who saved a white cop during a BLM protest?
They knew exactly the reaction they would get. Certainly wasn’t going to be from the shitty song.
July 20, 2023 @ 11:00 am
I don’t see what the fuss is all about. Must be a slow news week for the national media. Either like it or don’t and move on.
Got on YouTube and checked out a lot of small podcasts in the black community. People who are too unknown to have an ulterior motive either way. Did not find one podcaster that had a problem with the song.
July 20, 2023 @ 3:57 pm
They probably don’t. Most people who worry about stuff like this are white people who need to feel like they’re helping someone.
