Album Review – Jason Aldean’s “9”

jason-aldean

What Jason Aldean has done with this his 9th major album release is truly incredible. Who knew anyone had the stamina, the fortitude, the wherewithal, and the stick-to-itiveness to doggedly cram so many small town red meat chest-pounding machismo cliche’s into a single music album. Leave it to our boy from Macon to rear back & get it done.

Oh thank God. Usually when country music and sports interact—especially when it comes to college football—it’s a weekly shaming ritual for actual country music fans as Florida Georgia Line or some other trash gets selected as the bumper music into commercial breaks during broadcasts, or as the background noise of highlight reels.

When you’re putting your list together of country traditionalists and purists popping through in the mainstream, make sure you don’t forget to include Mo Pitney. It’s been said before, and it will be said again: We can’t agree on much these days. But we all agree on Dolly Parton. “Dolly Parton: 50 Years at the Grand Ole Opry” reminded us of why, and hopefully brought fans of music in country and beyond together at the commencement of the Holiday season.

graham-reynolds-marfa

For those searching for something a little more elaborate and offbeat in the country and roots realm that isn’t just another litany of drinking songs and verse/chorus repetitions, this slightly fey, but fully inspired and involved work by Austin-based music composer Graham Reynolds is worthy of a spin.

chris-stapleton

Compiling both sales and streaming data over the last ten years, Chris Stapleton’s “Traveller” not only comes out on top, it does so even though its closest competitors had a head start. “Traveller” wasn’t released until halfway into the decade on May 5th, 2015, and unlike its Bro-Country counterparts, received only sporadic radio play.

The timing is never good to be placed in handcuffs by the Nashville Metro Police Department and hauled off to jail for driving under the influence and an open container violation like Sam Hunt was on Thursday. But for Sam Hunt, it ended up being a double whammy since he was readying the release of a new single called “Sinning With You.”
