Country Damn Music: John Howie Jr.’s “Everything Except Goodbye”

john-howie-jr

John Howie Jr. is one of those artists you don’t have to spend any time warming up to. Right off the bat you know this is real country, and real good. Pedal steel, a true country voice, and rock solid songs suck you in and have you saying to yourself, “Now this is what I mean when I say country music.” No need for “alt” or “Americana” qualifiers here, this is country music how it’s supposed to be.

On April Fool’s day, Broken Bow Records released a 20-track Merle Haggard Tribute called Working Man’s Poet, primarily as a showcase for the roster’s talent. Big Broken Bow acts like Jason Aldean, Thompson Square, and Dustin Lynch make multiple appearances on the collection, but one of the most heavily-touted songs from the album has been Luke Bryan’s version of “Pancho & Lefty”.

Jamey. Jamey Johnson. Yeah, hey man, it’s your old pal country music here. Sorry to bother you like this out of the blue and everything, but it looks like I’ve kind of gotten myself into a mighty big pickle. Generally speaking I’m one of those proud people that doesn’t like to ask for anything from anybody. But honestly man, I need your help. Now I understand that you’re in some contract dispute…

rhonda-vincent-disguise-2

We already knew bluegrass goddess Rhonda Vincent was doing her best to save country music on the stage and in the studio. You don’t have to look any further than her recent two-disc release Only Me that tackles bluegrass on the first disc, and country on the second to see that her roots are pure. What we didn’t know is that she apparently also dabbles as a crime-fighting master of disguise.

A Million Ways To Die Single Cover

You wouldn’t think of the straight-laced Alan Jackson to be one for show tunes and Hollywood hobnobbing, but when comedian and cartoonist Seth McFarlane came calling for someone to lend a husky, country voice to the soundtrack of his upcoming movie A Million Ways to Die In The West, Jackson fit the bill. Is Pop Music Now Trumping Pop Country in Substance?

lorde-luke-bryan

I don’t have any data to back my assertions up. But I’ll be damned that if in 2014, your average pop star isn’t more likely to outpace your average country star when it comes to substance and depth in their music.
