Randy Travis Headed Back Out on Tour in Unique Collaboration
Country Music Hall of Famer Randy Travis has still not regained his ability to perform, but a unique undertaking has been launched to bring both Randy Travis and his songs back to live audiences. In partnership with Outback Presents, 12 dates have been announced for “The Music of Randy Travis Tour.” The tour will feature appearances by Randy Travis himself, and country singer and his co-star in the movie The Price, James Dupré, singing Randy’s songs. James Dupré played the son of a country singer played by Randy Travis in The Price.
James Dupré will be backed by the long-time touring band of Randy Travis consisting of Steve Hinson, David Johnson, Lance Dary, Bill Cook, Joe Van Dyke and Herb Shucher, along with longtime tour manager Jeff Davis. The band will perform all of Randy’s 16 No. 1 hits including “On The Other Hand,” “Forever and Ever, Amen” and “Three Wooden Crosses.” VIP packages will also be available to meet Randy Travis in person.
“We are incredibly excited to be back on the road and give Randy’s fans a chance to hear his music live again, and who better to sing his many hits than James Dupré?” says Randy’s wife, Mary Davis.
Randy Travis suffered a stroke along with other health ailments in 2013 that left him unable to speak or sing. Over the years he has gained some abilities, but still not enough to perform. Randy Travis continues to make efforts to be a part of the country music community despite his health issues, regularly making surprise appearances at concerts and country music functions. Randy Travis recently released a new biography titled Forever And Ever, Amen, and a new song called “Lead Me Home.” Don’t be surprised if additional dates for this new tour surface if the first leg is successful.

This is a new one.
There were Elvis impersonators and Beatlemania and singers singing on stage with holograms of the person they were imitating, but I’ve never heard of the subject icon being there himself, in the flesh to witness the act.
Will they bring out a George Jones impersonator to sing “A Few Ol’ Country Boys” with the Travis impersonator? At least we don’t have to worry about the Possum himself standing off-stage to watch.

I completely agree this is a strange thing, but I also think it’s worth giving a chance to see how it’s received. There are a lot of people who would like to see Randy Travis again in whatever context. And after reading his biography, he’s not exactly sitting on a pile of money like many may think. If it’s done respectfully, it could be a good way to keep the bills paid for Randy.

I agree which is why I think it’s weird a few previously recorded non released songs have randomly appeared in recent months. I think he should release a new record from the non released music. I bet there are a ton and would help him financially. Fans would love it; I know I would. Not sure how complicated that would be with who has the rights to the music though.

This is true. Randy is not in a good financial position, in part because of alleged mismanagement of his former wife. If it works, o.k. by me.

James Dupré has a good voice & his debut album Stoned To Death (2016) is a fine piece of work.
His voice is different to Randy Travis voice. James Dupré is not an impersonator.

Makes you wonder, then, what’s in it for James?
I don’t think he should add any more dates–unless it’s presented as a James Dupré show–with “The Music of Randy Travis” as a segment.
Being “subservient” to another artist does not appear to be the path to launching a successful career.

visualizes Randy in a recliner on stage, with a glass of sweet tea, as his band and dupre sing Randy’s catalog in front of him. “still more country” than FGL, Luke, etc…

Is there any chance they might come to the west coast? I have seen Randy perform many times. My seven children were raised on Tandy Travis and Zi cooking dinner and singing together everyday. His music has been a big part of our life and memories.❤️

This sounds like a pale simulacra of the real thing and I’m not interested. But then I was more excited to hear Dwight Yoakam sing a few Merle Haggard songs than I was to hear Willie Nelson sing his own songs. I won’t judge. (And I won’t judge Travis for hustling.)

We saw Willie Friday night in New Hampshire and although it was a little rocky at first (and freezing outside) he did good. We travel and see him 2-3 times a year. I’d rather see him than almost any other artist out there.

Interesting and weird, I guess we will see how it turns out after the first show! I’m a massive Randy Travis fan though, so it’s great to see him still touring, regardless of the format.

Maybe it’s just as simple as this.
James Dupre:
“The world was stripped of Randy’s iconic voice, and I think it’s still important for people to be able to go out and hear his music and see him,” Dupré said at a media event announcing the tour. “And I’d love to be the one, I’m honored to be the one, to be able to be a part of that.”

Randy is my favorite Country music singer and songwriter. I’m so happy for him,I truly understand Randy wanting to get out there again. My husband was a marathon running then one day a car ran over him and his Harley and left him for dead. He lost his left leg and a lot of the use in his right hand. Lot his job as a pharmacist at the hospital due to being in the hospital too long. “Go figure?”
It’s taking a quite a few years, but he is now running with a blade. He isn’t a young buck either. I have faith in my husband and I have faith in Randy, too!
This is ???? awesome, give it to God, Randy! We love you and have much faith that you’ll share your gift again. I hope your continuing to write songs.
Wishing you much success with your health and your career! I can’t wait to see ya in Biloxi MS!

Randy Travis sings words in his songs that mirror the feelings many of us have. To say he is a super star commercializes the man and his talent but doesn’t even begin to showcase what Randy elicits from his fans.

Interesting concept….and if Randy can make a little money off of it so be it…puzzling schedule though. Three shows scheduled in my home state of GA. October 18th in Macon…next night in Gulfport Mississippi…then back to Georgia in Augusta on the 23rd….bounce around SC and Tennessee for a week and back to Georgia in Atlanta on the 29th. Seems like a lot of unnecessary zig zag travel and expense.
